I just moved to Charleston and was looking for a classic barbershop and thought this would be perfect for my husband and I. I have short hair and usually have an undercut so barbers work great for me as a female. I have been letting my undercut grow out to a bob but desperately needed to cut the back and around the ears. I didn't expect it to be difficult since it's a basic fade down usually #2 down to #1 on clippers. I was scheduled with Kate and specifically said when I sat down in her chair- leave the top alone and fade down where the undercut was to the nape of the neck and trim tight around the ears. It's a mess y'all. First off she was running 25 mins behind for my appointment and so she made it a RUSH job for mine. She straight cut the top (it's not even straight) and when I asked her to try and blend it (cause it looks like a chopped bowl cut) I was met with: "I did the best I could", I asked for styling product twice after she which I was informed they were out of the styling aid they advertise to carry (Suavecito) and when she finally did put some type of paste in my hair.... she started slicking it down. Umm... Even fellas know you don't matte slick a classic cut or pompadour. So I asked her if I could see the comb and try to style it myself... I was met with; "well I just met you so I don't know what you want". She walked off to the check out stand while I fixed my hair and grabbed my jacket, and oh look- a jar of Suavecito on the table. She was snippy, clippy and a disappointment. I honestly tipped to be done with this experience. Kelly, another stylist, answered the phone when my (Rockabilly haired) fella called to cancel after he saw my disaster. He was also going to be a new client. Kelly offered to fix it, but I honestly don't think I can walk back in there with this wreck. It's an embarrassing cut. I'm on my way now to get hair dye to see if that'll blend the harsh cut in the back. Photos added for reference. Note the uneven face bottom left that's missing a chunk. Side note... the towels Kate used were dirty and the other barber (male) was NOT wearing a mask. When I asked about it I was told he forget his face shield today and doesn't like how it fogs his glasses. There were also 2 customers without masks and nothing was addressed about that. I figure this will either get deleted because they seem to be missing any recent reviews, but It should be known- beware. read more

Visiting Charleston and saw they did manicures and pedicures. Called yesterday and made an appointment for my wife. Without a doubt the worst job of painting someone's nails I've ever seen. If the woman passed some type of schooling to do nails it must have been for blind people. Not sure where she learned but you don't put nail polish on the customers skin. I got a pedi, hot towel/straight razor shave, and ear waxing today. First the pedi: absolute best ive ever had. Kelli is amazing. Im seriously considering becoming a foot model now. Second, the hot towel/straight razor shave:Old school extravagance at its finest. Wonderful experience-Ive already scheduled for another next Saturday. And finally, the ear waxing: cant say I wanna do this everyday but if i dont wanna look like a Bobcat it has to be done. Kelli was great-no pain at all!! I came here for what I expected would be a sure thing for a good hair cut. I don't do anything crazy, it is a side part blended with a full beard (at a 1), and square back. I showed a picture of how I like my hair cut to be sure we understood each other, and off she went. When she was doing the back, I felt she was rounding it, and mentioned I wanted a square back. She said she was rounding it, and apologized and said she would fix it. I trusted that she could do it, but the result was terrible. Not only that, but for $25, I didn't even get a straight razor to clean up my beard? I paid $20 in Miami for the works with a $5 tip for a perfect hair cut. Definitely wouldn't go back here. It is ok to make a mistake, but use good judgment when fixing it. She could have just left it rounded knowing how terrible her "fix" was. read more

I wasn't sure about this place. I had gotten a gift certificate from some girlfriends after a rough time, and was encouraged to pamper myself, but was kind of put off by the pinup-girl theme of the place. It seemed more like a men's place, and even if they do offer women's services, I didn't want a bunch of guys watching me get my hair and nails done, really. But my friends urged me to go, so I did, and I'm glad I went. Alyssa did a great job with my hair, and the nails looked great, too. (Sorry, I forget the name of the nail technician.) There were mostly female customers in the shop (same when I went back a few times later) and I really felt comfortable. Plus, you get a complementary beverage with your services, so it all really feels quite decadent, even with the 1950's decor. After chatting with the stylist, I learned that most of their clientele is women. I've been back several times -- Alyssa is one of the few people I will let cut my hair. I'm even taking my daughter next time I go. I hope the misconception about the "tops off" name and 1950's-era men's club decor doesn't keep other women away. It's really a fantastic place to treat yourself to a little pampering! read more

Preface: I was a walk-in customer, no appointment needed(always good to plan ahead though)! Was timid at first, had a bad experience with my previous salon / barber shop. I wouldn't let that get you down though the shop is very clean and has a nice feel to it, pin-up's and all. =D The gentlemen who cut my hair was really good had a firm touch but knew exactly to a tee what I wanted when I mentioned an undercut like Brad Pitt from Fury. Came with the whole shibang: fresh cut, shampoo, hot /cold towel, styling, and a drink was also offered (declined since lunch just happened). All taken into account with the eclectic styling and two block walk being that its downtown near capital street I would say I'm a definate convert to Tops Off. My final note being that I hail from Chicago originally is that I would rank them 8.5/10 on the classic Barber shop feel, atmosphere, and respect. read more

I absolutely love this place. I moved to Columbus, OH but still make the drive back whenever I need a haircut. I just don't trust anyone else. The first time I went, I was a bit hesitant about going to a barber shop for a lady's haircut, but Kelli is absolutely amazing. I get a wash, cut, and style. The wash is heaven and she always cuts my hair just right. I'd recommend getting an appointment if you're a lady, Kelli can get pretty busy. But this place is worth every penny and a true gem in downtown Charleston. read more

Absolutely the worst haircut I have ever had. The guy somehow managed to cut the natural curl out of my hair. I had to go back to my former stylist a few days later so she could fix the disaster. Months later and I'm still suffering hoping it grows out. Pedicure was also a complete disaster that looked like a six year old 's work. The only thing enjoyable about my visit was the massage. This place is so cool! I was in town on business and desperately needed a haircut. I found this place on Yelp and walked over. It was very well-decorated, with pinup posters, a Ray Lichtenstein print, a pool table, and neon. I'd go in here to hang out. The haircut was good, I got a free Coke, and it was only $18; they also have beer on tap. Plus I was seen right away on a Thursday at 1:30. Okay so I started to go to this place basically the first day that it opened up. Honestly, I thought it was a strip club at first but when I heard about the complimentary drinks, I was sold. As a female who usually spends 2-4 hours in the hair salon (depending on what services), I like the fact that I can relax. I love the 1950s theme, it is almost like being transcending into the 50s and being pampered. I have been having Jim do my hair since the first day and I absolutely love him and his advice. He's very creative and always does an excellent job on my hair. He tries different things and always helps me figure out what I wanted to do to change it up. Recently he told me to try straight bangs and they look amazing, I absolutely love my hair cut! I tell all of my friends about him and Jenn over at Tops Off. I have made several referrals to Tops Off and will continue to do so. Their stylist are amazing and the prices and services are much better than most companies. read more

Shop is aesthetically pleasing and I was hoping the cost wouldn't indicate a "cheap" haircut. It did. Just having requested a simple fade and trim off the top, I sat there for an hour and a half while the "barber" seemed as though his confidence and knowledge was lacking. I get my hair cut frequently and it's never taken more than an hour. I was hoping at least it would be something spectacular, but when I finally got turned around and saw it, nothing at all impressive. As a new customer, if you have $18 and you're thinking of giving Tops Off a chance, look elsewhere for a decent cut rather than risk a hack job, because you likely will get one. I've had 4 haircuts from this place and now I'm not going back. Every time I'd enter the place, seven staff members attending zero customers acted as if it was their first time interacting with a customer. Most of the people working here seem inexperienced and take forty (yes, forty) minutes to cut a man's hair. It's one thing to run an upscale salon/barber shop with complimentary beverages, but if the people can't cut hair, what are you paying for exactly? Avoid at all costs. read more
