My first takeout in the new house so OFCOURSE it had to be ramen! I was worried moving from south austin to san marcos/kyle I wouldn't be able to find a place as good as the ramen shop I'd become accustomed to near my apartment. I was wrong! I used google maps just to search ramen and this place came up. It looked interesting so I made my way there one evening. It was a bit later in the day than I'd planned due to solicitors but it was a welcome respite after having to deal with people (I was just over it by that point in the day). It's in a pretty small strip mall with a few interesting looking establishments. Which would explain why the parking lot here is consistently crowded. Its well worth dealing with the horrible parking for the ramen here. I was intrigued because they don't have regular tonkatsu ramen. Here, spicy is the default. I'm more than ok with that! Especially after the first taste of the broth. It wasn't as heavy as some tonkatsu broths. I feel the spiciness of the broth lent a lightness to it that you don't get from more traditional pork broths. The toppings were the traditional toppings (egg, mushroom, scallion, char shu, seaweed) but the ginger added something that I haven't found in other tonkatsu ramen. It was so refreshing hitting what seemed like pockets of that sweet and fragrant ginger after going through mouthfuls of lip tingling noodles. It was all just perfect. The spice wasn't overwhelming, just enough to keep you slurping. If there was anything lacking it would be the pork itself. It wasn't bad by any means but wasn't anything to gush about. It was just ok. But it was still enjoyable and with the full experience of the bowl it was a thoroughly enjoyable meal. I also got an order of gyoza. Those were great! The perfect balance of browned crispness and soft chewyness. They are fully satisfying without dipping them in anything. The inside was savory and moist. And the seaweed salad was one of the best I've ever had. Again, they added a little twist that made a huge difference. There were (what I think were) crispy fried onions on top! They also mixed in actual salad. I'm not sure if it was on purpose or not but I enjoyed the seaweed salad a lot. I'm not sure if this is a family business but the food here gives me the vibe that this is excellent home cooking. I can't wait to go back because I can't get enough. As soon as I finished, I was thinking about the next time I could go back. This is a great place and I feel so grateful to be so close to a place that is able to provide me one of my favorite comfort foods done very well. Thank you Toro for an EXCELLENT meal!

I was nearby and thought I'd stop for lunch. It was a Wednesday, and the restaurant was pretty empty. We were seated quickly at our table. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside, it was a bit dark, but there were plenty of tables.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They had a menu online, so you scan a QR code at your table. Order our food with the waitress. The spicy garlic tofu was good; it definitely had a kick, I think because they use Thai chili. The tofu wasn't crispy, probably because of the sauce on it. The ramen was okay, but the meat had a funny taste, like it was a bit off. I just pushed it to the side. The broth was good, but after eating the tofu, I'm not sure if it was actually spicy or not. The poke was okay. It had more rice than toppings, which I wish was more balanced.

The ramen here is good! I asked for no egg and they still gave me the egg, but that's fine. I gave it to someone else at my table. I didnt love the chicken karaage, but I think hat's just because I don't like it anywhere and need to stop ordering it. So that's nothing against this place. We came on Memorial Day and it wasn't busy. There were two other tables occupied. I probably would come again if I'm ever in the area!

I finally tried Toro and can say I was pleasantly surprised! I got a poke bowl with tuna and salmon, everything tasted fresh and the portions were large. I placed a take out order, the service was great and my order came out fast. I think their prices are fair and I will be retuning here on a regular basis!

I WAS REFUSED TO EAT HERE AND I ONLY SAID ABOUT 15 WORDS WHICH WAS PLACING MY ORDER.!!!! I have brought my family here all the way from Austin and Pflugerville, Texas people coming from San Antonio Texas to try this Ramen. I had discovered this Ramen a couple years back and I always order it the same way. It was a shame that they refuse to serve the modifications. I only wanted to replace the chicken because I prefer the pork belly on a chicken based broth. And the kitchen told the server that that's not how they can make it and it's not possible even though I've been doing this for years.I'm really highly highly highly upset. I can't eat here no more it's so sad too because . I'm sorry. I only eat chicken based soup. I'm sick and I wanted my favorite ramen I drove 45 mins to be rejected. I even had to pay for my drinks to be taken Togo. It was my first time ever getting refused on a modification here. Something I do all the time. And no I don't have the energy to argue I just said I can't eat here. That's how sick I am.

My brother and I ate at Toro and it was amazing! It was my first time trying Ramen but it literally was the best thing. I had the Chicken Rich Ramen without the mushroom and also ordered the Beef Gyoza which was the best dumplings I think i've ever had. The broth in my ramen was amazing, and I tried my brother's broth-he got the Tokyo Shoyu Ramen. It was AMAZING. The service was great! Our server was super nice and accommodating, as well as the other server who gave us our food. We had planned on going to another restaurant but we ended up here and it was very very good! To start the service was great and we got seated quickly. To order we had to get the spicy garlic edamame and it was super spicy and delicious, they also gave us a ton of it which was awesome. I would recommend it for sure along with the edamame at Umami both are killer. We also got the pork gyoza and it was delicious! For the entree we got the spicy tonkotsu ramen and it was amazing the spice level for it all was very spicy but it had a ton of flavor. All in all it's a great spot if you want some ramen. I was in town and wanted some ramen and wanted to check this place out - very cool place - the ramen is flavorful but the topping is too little. The bowl comes with 2 very thin slide pork - half an egg and a little black fungus. The soup is rich 8.5/10. They forgot my seaweed and they charge extra .85cent for take out order. Come close to $17 with tax and tbh I don't think it's worth the price. read more

Great ramen - the soup is balanced but on the savory side. The XL Fried Rice was great tasting and reminiscent of Indonesian fried rice rich in flavor. The service was top notch. This is a little hidden gem inside a plaza that you could easily miss but well worth seeking out. No frills but if you want a very flavorful and delicious bowl of ramen in San Marcos you'll be hard pressed to do better. We always get the #6 (spicy Tonkotsu) and an order of the spicy garlic edamame. They have a pretty extensive menu so if you're not in the mood for something hot then they have you covered. You can also have a beer or some sake if you'd like. Eating in is always best in my opinion as I just don't think ramen travels well, but we have done take out several times and it actually holds up pretty well. Quick service and the family that runs it is very sweet and accommodating. Reasonably priced as well for what you get. This will continue to be our go-to spot for ramen in the area. read more

Husband and I went here for a quick date night! We were sat right away and ordered quickly. Our server was super sweet and quick. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I didn't love that I could see into the kitchen, the back room, and the fact the restaurant looked half finished? There were boxes everywhere and random furniture.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our appetizers were stars of the show, the edamame and pork dumplings were so yummy! My husband ordered the fried rice and I got the creamy chicken ramen. The rice had just oyster sauce and wasn't that good. My ramen was good. Nothing special. The chicken that came with it was seasoned well but super dry. Once we were finished eating it took an additional 20 minutes for us to checkout. Would only go back for apps. read more

This is it! If you want Ramen, this is the spot. The broth is perfect! full of flavor, how ramen should be. We were very impressed. The takoyaki was perfect as well, it's hard finding good takoyaki. The flavors tasted very authentic. We will be back! read more

Came over to the area for sushi and ended up at Toro. We were greeted quickly by friendly staff. Menu was a QR code leading you to ChowNow; was a bit jumbled and confusing. The restaurant is a big open room, the bathrooms are close to kitchen and cleaning supply area. The curtains leading to the bathroom were very dirty, not something I want to have to touch or touch me heading back to the table. The ice was kept in a sink with no cover. I ordered hot tea then was given iced tea, I didn't drink it due to above mentioned ice comment. We ordered Beef Gyoza and Poke P3- three protein poke bowl; for protein we picked yellowtail, salmon and tuna. It tasted okay, the yellowtail was brown and squishy like a mushroom. read more

Both times I've been here our waiter has taken a long time to even greet us. My last experience today me and my partner were seated as soon as we walked in and sat there for 20 minutes without even being greeted. While the server was going and checking on every single table in there and cashing every table out. Me and my partner felt very dismissed and decided to leave because no one had even paid attention to us. While we were walking out there was 2 employees who were at the front and didn't say anything to us. Kinda wild in my opinion. read more

Their chashu buns were nothing like chashu buns I've had anywhere; they're slightly smaller versions of the frozen stuffed buns my Filipina coworker introduced me to a decade ago. The cubed pork in these was not comparable to their entrees or other places' chashu. The outer shell was a pleasant texture and they were filling if a tad dry but they're the kind of thing I'd keep for snacks at home/work, not expect at a restaurant. One weekend of whimsy and joy is enough to refuel the tank and bring that drive back. One $23 expenditure at Kobe Steak House & Sushi is enough to turn the light back on in my mind and create a divine spiritual experience. While visiting San Marcos for a friend's birthday, we were ultimately led to Kobe for dinner at the recommendation of his roommate. My friend was very excited to put some work in. We arrived a little before 7:45, and after a confusing queue where they messaged us that our table was ready before it was actually ready, we were seated at 8:00. Once you're seated, the waitstaff takes a drink order and explains the process if you need it. I'll explain it here: you're given a piece of paper where you mark what you want from a list identical to the menu. With a group, it's important to collaborate and make sure you get a good order in but not overdo it. Every piece you don't eat is a $.75 charge, so unless you have someone like me who locks in, be careful. For starters, they serve soup, appetizers like edamame, fried rice, rangoon, wontons, and more, plus salads. You order them at the same time as the sushi, but they come faster because the sushi has to be prepared at the bar. The sushi includes your traditional nigiri plus maki and specialty rolls. Once we threw in that first order, we were shortly munching on wontons, rangoon, fried rice, and everything in between. Everything here was good. Nothing too extreme flavor-wise or anything too memorable, but there was nothing I didn't like. Our first plate of sushi came out about 20-25 minutes after we placed the order. Off the dome, we ordered octopus nigiri, salmon nigiri, red snapper nigiri, a Philadelphia roll, a Shaggy Dog roll, a Spider roll, and a few other things I can't remember. I do strongly remember how heavenly the Shaggy Dog and Spider rolls were. It's important to understand that Kobe is not a premium sushi restaurant. Similar concepts that are higher-end can cost $50-$70 a person, and I think you can obviously tell how amazing higher-end sushi is. That concept and this concept are playing a different game. Kobe is in a college town where hungry college kids will shove as many rolls down their throats as they can. For the value, the quality is shockingly high in my opinion. However, I was moving sushi rolls through my system with such efficiency that it's hard to figure out if the rice was old or the sushi had freezer burn like another Yelp review said. Who cares. This place is doing exactly what it's advertising, and you're getting a better deal than what you're paying for. How can this be profitable for Kobe Steak House & Sushi? Our second order had another Shaggy Dog roll, another Spider roll, a TNT roll, and some more nigiri. By the time we burned through that, most of the table was full. I personally could have kept going, but everyone else was a quitter. At least that's what we thought. After our great waitress brought us our checks and we all paid, one of my friends made a big stink about how no one else wanted more and she would've had another Shaggy Dog roll. I wasn't going to let that slide, as I had voiced my opinion of getting another roll going well in advance. The waitress was nice enough to get us another roll after I proceeded to embarrass our entire table about it. We left Kobe before the managerial staff came out and beat us up one by one for being the most annoying table in Kobe history, but it was all worth it. Kobe is one of the best $23 meals I've ever had. A place that made me wish I had gotten a degree at Texas State. It opened my third eye. It was a meal so good we had to pull out the Tarot cards. To drink, I ordered the jalapeño prickly pear margarita, while my wife chose a peach, coconut, and strawberry margarita. Both had excellent flavor. The kids enjoyed their donuts and cookie, while I opted for a guava empanada that turned out to be one of the highlights of the visit. Overall, Casa Maria impressed me more with its atmosphere, bakery, and creative drinks than with the food itself. It's a beautiful restaurant with a fun family-friendly vibe, a strong bakery program, and some excellent margarita flavors. I'd gladly stop back for the pastries and drinks--and if they ever decide to be a little more generous with the tequila, even better.

Toro Ramen is a hidden gem in San Marcos. My husband and I came to Toro in need of some delicious ramen and soup and I heard about this place through Yelp and Facebook. We ordered their Tonkatsu with pork char siu and Chicken based ramen. They also have a lot of great appetizers; we tried the chick karaage, agedashi tofu, and the squid. The Tonkatsu ramen is thicker so it grabbed on to the noodles really well. It flavored the noodles in every bite so I felt like it was extremely tasty. We really like the fresh ingredients. Noodles, char shiu and the egg were top notch. The vegetable, homemade chili and garlic were nice touches. Overall excellent taste and textures. We found this place to be better than many of the ramen places that we've been before. About the restaurant itself, we enjoyed the casual atmosphere along with the friendly service. We had been looking forward to trying this new ramen restaurant and the food was amazing. We were greeted warmly, seated comfortably and enjoyed a delicious meal. As vegetarians we chose the tamari broth ramen - the spinach noodles are fantastic - and with some spicy garlic edemame beans and a tempura for starters. The friendly service guided us through the menu when we asked for recommendations. The house cooks have a few specialties including some incredible hot sauce and you may want to ask to try one of these tasty and powerful sauces. The place feels real with long benches and tables made out of real wood. So the Toro Restaurant is real people, real food, real wood. That's not bad! read more

First off, let me say that if you are expecting this place to be like Tat-Su Ya, in Austin, or any other decent ramen establishment, you are in for a rude awakening. This was the 2nd time we've been to this establishment and the 2nd time we've been disappointed. The ramen noodles in BOTH bowls were undercooked. It was still firm and crunchy! Why? The broth was as plain and as bland as you can get and filled with oil. Absolutely no flavor! I kid you not, there is more flavor in a package of Maruchan Noodle Soup. This was my first Ramen experience and it was great! Brand new restaurant so I was unsure of what to expect. Our server recommended the spicey ramen and it was great. You actually have a choice of chicken or pork, and you can get just the meat from the starter menu or you can pay for the meal with miso, a green salad, and a side of rice. Katsu's a classic and the larger section of the meal's to go container was PACKED. The visible layer of crispy easy-to-dip strips is the top of three, I got two meals out of them. The side of veggies was wonderful again, varied and not over cooked. The salad was standard and the miso was comforting and tasty, same as last time. CHASHU BUN. Their chashu buns were nothing like chashu buns I've had anywhere; they're slightly smaller versions of the frozen stuffed buns my Filipina coworker introduced me to a decade ago. The cubed pork in these was not comparable to their entrees or other places' chashu. The outer shell was a pleasant texture and they were filling if a tad dry but they're the kind of thing I'd keep for snacks at home/work, not expect at a restaurant. The tempura sweet potato is far better for about the same price. Buns aside, prices have been fair and I've enjoyed their dishes. Looking forward to trying their menu again in the future.
