Wow. I stopped by after looking for some lunch close to campus. The restaurant itself is a cozy, small restaurant with a good vibe. Unfortunately, they only had water and sweet/unsweet tea to offer for drinks (soft drink machine down?) but that's okay. I opted for sweet tea and it was refreshing. I got the salmon nigiri, unagi nigiri, and Shaggy Dog roll. The salmon nigiri had a nice, big hunk of salmon on top and was pretty delicious. The unagi was out of this world delicious. I loved the sear on it and it was also a generous piece of meat. The Shaggy Dog roll was spicy and definitely full of umami. I thought everything I had today was incredibly yummy. Ordered sake instead, it showed up on ice but the sake was clearly not refrigerated and came out of the bottle room temp (on no planet should Nigori sake be severed room temp or warm so I think they just dont refrigerate their sakes? Which is odd as most sakes offered are flavored sakes meant to be served cold...) If you're looking for better sushi while listening to hip-hop/rap as your inexplicable background music you aren't going to find it. All jokes aside, the sushi here is very solid especially for the price. One of the best happy hours in San Marcos from 4-7 pm EVERY DAY. We love the goyza and the spicy crunch roll with some hamachi (all on happy hour menu). They also have an extensive menu of both noodle and traditional Asian dishes if Sushi isn't your thing. Very nice selection of sake as well. For a no-frills type of spot the presentation is also very well done... maybe not overly important but you can tell the chefs take pride in what they do. Service staff has always been very friendly and attentive. This is our favorite spot in SM for sushi so give it a try. I have taken several people here who I'd consider to be a bit of a sushi snob and they have all not only liked it, but been back on their own. read more

We went for lunch on a Thursday and it did not disappoint. We were seated quickly and service was great. We ordered the spicy edamame as it is one of my favorites dishes in general and this is honestly one of the best in San Marcos that I've had so far. It was very spicy, the edamame were huge and full of flavor and the chili oil they used was even better for dipping the sushi in it after . Then we got the teriyaki chicken and the Texas State and Volcanoes fried roll. The sushi was fresh and so so good but the teriyaki chicken had surprised us. It was honestly some of the best we had so far and we were pleased with the portion size too. I would recommend it all as it was all amazing. I was visiting the area and really wanted a poke bowl. I looked at a few places and this one has pretty good reviews. I really can see why. The ordering kiosk was down so I placed my order with a server. I created my own bowl with crab and tuna. I added avocado, seaweed salad, and spicy tuna. It took about 10 minutes and it was ready. The food was incredibly fresh and delicious. My server was very friendly and has some good suggestions for the menu. The restaurant is in a small shopping center. Researched sushi in San Marcos and this one had a high rating from over 200 Yelpers. Sure to not disappoint I thought, but Yelp has failed me this time surprisingly. This place is a 3-star quality restaurant tops. FOOD: Shrimp tempura (2/5) seemed like it came out of a frozen box. Bulgogi-Don (3/5) was decent but the bowl looked sad in terms of their beef ration. The Volcano sushi (3/5) was mediocre even after sitting on its own puddle of oil. And finally, the Double Spicy sushi (2/5) was double the disappointment. The sushi on top felt too cold/icy. SERVICE: The waitress was very nice so no complaints here. LOCATION: It is located in the middle of Texas State University inside a strip mall with plenty of parking. The sushi was fresh and tasty and the cold small plates/appetizers really set Umami Sushi apart from other small sushi joints - the small plates are very flavorful and are similar to dishes you would find at a more upscale sushi restaurant. I also like that they have a good fish to rice ratio, oftentimes sushi that is a good deal or on Happy hour is mostly rice with a small piece of fish but that is not the case here, the fish is a decent size compared to the rice portion. read more

I dropped in here Wednesday night after having rehearsal nearby. I had read good things about the place and was excited to try it out. I will say I was not disappointed. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated, and not very loud despite having several people dining in. Service was great, my waitress, very professional and kind. Their menu has a great variety of food but I decided to order sushi. The waitress recommended the Spicy Flaky Roll and the Firecracker roll, both fresh tasting and delish. On the pricier side for a San Marcos eatery but when you notice and taste the quality it is apparent why they do command a higher price. The sushi was presented beautifully and was so delicious. The Takoyaki was crispy and hot outside and gooey inside which is exactly how it should be! The tuna tower we modified to have salmon was so good! I don't know what happened but this place is trash now. We always used to get sushi from here. It's been about 9 months since we ate here. We had a pick up order $67 dollars worth of sushi. They ran out of something so we didn't even get our full order. We did get refunded but I can not believe how SMALL the sushi rolls were. We're talking size of a quarter and 5 little pieces. Called Umami at 9pm hoping to put in an online order, as they said to go online, which as well states i am unable to put in an order. So then we arrived at the restaurant expecting to be seated, only to be turned away at 9 PM, despite their posted closing time of 10 PM. It was disappointing to be denied service an hour before closing, especially without any clear explanation. If the kitchen has an early cutoff, it should be clearly stated to avoid misleading customers. Tonight's menu in the order it arrived/was consumed: Small hot sake Fatty salmon Scallop Monk fish liver glass Pinot Grigio Sea urchin Saltwater eel Tamago/egg I staunchly avoid the last two hours of service in many sushi establishments as I've been rushed or been served questionable goods at these times. I did not experience that here tonight. The plates were quality and the service was good. Overwhelmingly best scallops and tastiest eel (both fresh- and saltwater) in town. Liver has been consistently creamy. I also love the seasonings with which they're served, full stop. Complementary to good product, not concealing something embarrassing. I waited AN HOUR as people walked in and order and left as well as walked in sat down ate and left.. I came into town from California to visit family, and was craving sushi. I typically look on Yelp for reviews when I'm out of town and came across Umami Sushi. When we walked in we were seated right away. The poke nachos were to die for! And the rolls were huge, and super fresh! And not to mention the playlist they had playing was good ole 90s RnB that had me embarrassing my sister and her husband.
