Also two small baggies of salsa - green and red and a little cup of charro beans. Not really fajitas in the traditional sense. The tortillas were the small street size version corn tortillas and they were two tortillas to each taco. Very traditional. The meat was basically chopped small bits, like bistec taco. I had the tacos Bautisados which just adds guacamole to the basic carne asada tacos. The tortillas are hand made and the carne asada the cooked over wood carbon flavor the order of 4 came with some cebolla asada and Beans which were delicious . My wife had a combo which came with 4 tacos cebolla asada Ben's and a small potato and drink this truly has the Nuevo León flavor to it as the meat is also brought from that region upon leaving they were setting up an ataud outside because they said they were preparing to make some cabrito which is not in the menu he advised us if that is something we would like to call them ahead of time and they would make it for us . The problem I had on my first visit was that I asked for 1/2 lb of carnitas and 1/2 lb of tripas. I don't know about you but soggy tripas are not my thing. I specifically asked her to bring me them "dorados" and she said sure. She brought them soggy like the skin of a chicken soggy. Not even exaggerating. So I told her they weren't dorados and she insisted I try them because "estaban muy ricos". I tried but I got sick and grossed out at the sogginess. I told her and she said it's because "no a todos les gusta así" and that she usually tells the customers that it's an added wait time for them to make them "dorados". I told her then why didn't she give me the option. She said well "es que dijo el cocinero que se hacen amargas". I told her that it's my preference and the customers opinion on how they want their food cooked prevails over the cooks opinion. She said "yo nomas trabajo aquí". 20 excuses later....and she finally took them back and brought them swimming in oil. Dorados but looked like they threw them in the fryer instead of doing it on the grill/pan. Better than soggy I guess. Nonetheless I won't be coming back. The restaurant is sort of like a buffet. You go to the counter pick what food you want and then sit down and eat. You can get another round or go pay when you are finished. Fresh tortillas and chips are self serve. Picking food I got by, by just pointing at what I wanted, but the choices threw me off. You can get typical Mexican fare like Chile Poblanos, beans and rice etc, but there's also things like mashed potatoes and alfredo pasta. They also have desserts I didn't try like cheese cake. The food quality was fine and tasted like a ready made Mexican deli if there were such thing. The non-Mexican fare just seemed random though (maybe it actually is typical to have these dishes but im not sure). I personally wouldn't go again, but wouldn't discourage someone looking for decent authentic Mexican food from going.

After 30 very hungry minutes of driving around town, I gave up on the clouds parting and a light from heaven shining upon the place where I was destined to find those tacos, so I pulled into the next place I passed. Las Enchiladas happened to be that place. The menu was entirely in Spanish, which was a good sign. Considering I've lived in Texas most of my life, I don't know much Spanish, but I know my Mexican food-Spanish. The tacos were supposed to come with shredded beef, lettuce, and tomato, but I switched the produce for queso fresco crumbles, which was probably the smartest decision I've made all month. The beef was perfectly seasoned, the tortillas were ingenious - soft corn shells fried and then folded around the meat and cheese. And that horchata. Ohh that horchata. I've had some sketchy horchatas in my day (this taco joint in Tempe's was reminiscent of melted ice cream - yikes) but this was perfect. Not too sweet, not too thick, and the perfect amount of cinnamon. I don't know if these are the best tacos in McAllen, but for the price (less than $7) I can't imagine much better.
