Every time we go here we are impressed with the service and the food. The fish is never over cooked. And they have the very best coconut shrimp out of the 4-5 other restaurants we have tried for this dish. This is a MUST do place. Arrived late around 10pm. They ran out of pizza and pasta dough. I respect them running out which means they don't mass produce these and usually means high quality. Drinks are mid but the food is delicious. I had the Filete Mignon medium cook with potatoes. Highly recommend this spot for the food. We celebrated a birthday here with a group of about 20. They made it so special for us! To our surprise, they decorated the room with balloons on the table a birthday decorations. From the first visit sitting outside with my dive buddies a few months ago... to an inside breakfast several months later ....food and service was on point this time. Well worth 5 stars. My friend and I stopped to have breakfast before we headed back to Tucson , and everything was so good. My friend had a bloody Mary that she LOVED! Maybe 4 1/2 stars. Great restaurant; you can sit outside in the shade. They have an outdoor pizza oven and make your pizza right in front of you. On top of that; they have fine dining options as well. Fun ambiance, descent service and the night I went in for dinner, there was excellent live music. I'm an American in San Carlos during Thanksgiving and was craving some turkey, there are several restaurants that do traditional fare here catering to us Americans. I did the takeout and was not disappointed, the Turkey was delicious, the stuffing was good, it was sour dough base, not the cornbread dressing Ma makes. The gravy was delis, they did mash potatoes and mashed sweet potatoes. There was homemade cranberry sauce yummy. They advertised ham but their ham is a ground pork loaf cooked with what appeared to be prunes in it, that was sliced it was very yummy. Then there was a homemade apple tart it was so so good. Went in for the first time with high hopes for a lovely evening and a good meal. While the evening was lovely the meal was not. The "Special" was roast pork loin. The pork was so overcooked it was like eating dry sawdust. It came with a nice plum/ cherry sauce but even that couldn't save the pork. Terrible service to start with. We sat at the bar for 15-20 minutes before they acknowledged our presence. We had a couple of drinks and were looking at the food menu. The owner comes out and stated that he had 1 prime rib left. I love prime rib, so we took him up on it. A few minutes later, out comes this beautiful piece of meat. Then we tried to cut into it. It was so tough! It was like trying to cut shoe leather. We really tried to like it. It was so tough, it made my teeth hurt. When the owner asked how it was, my dad told him tougher than a boot! The owner said, "I know." Then he made excuses that it was the cut of meat. He realized he was just contradicting himself, and said, "oh shit!" in my ear. He got caught serving a terrible dinner. This is a nice place to sit, especially outside by the newly redeveloped plaza. The tables are large, the chairs are comfortable and the service is friendly and quite attentive. Four of us went here for breakfast. The menu is comprehensive. I opted for a western dish, bacon and eggs, and it was good. Generally the group agreed the food was adequate to good except for the eggs benedict which was served on a stale bun. The coffee was very good. It is a place I would revisit, in the hope that it would shape up to the better comments made about the food. For the meantime, it is a decent restaurant in a good location. read more

I'm rating this place 3 stars because in just a year the food quality has gone downwards. Not sure if they changed chefs but you can tell the difference. This place was great but I'm very disappointed. They used to make excellent pizza but now the dough is way too thick and raw. The dough was not tasting right either something was off comparing to your typical American wood fired pizza. I ordered crab cakes, it was kind of mixed with bread crumbs that was not cooked very well. I would have rather they were smaller and done right. 2 years ago the crab cakes were amazing. It had been a while since visiting this restaurant. We had seen it change over the course of 30 years several times. We had heard about the prime rib special that they serve on Friday and Saturday nights. So we went in and ordered one Prime Rib (about $540 Pesos or $28 USD) and a Pasta Carbona. We also ordered a Ceaser Salad to share. The wait staff was excellent and very attentive. They first brought out some bread. The bread was pretty horrible. It had been heated in a microwave and was tough and chewy. However, this is August in San Carlos with humidity near 100% so it is hard to have good bread. The Ceaser Salad was yummy. Very anchovie and delicious. The Prime Rib was FABULOUS! Ordered medium rare was about 1.5" thick with the bone!! Wow - it was tender, juicy, flavorful...just plain great. Served with good tasting potatoes and green beans. The prime rib was served with a traditional Au jus and a wonderful Bernese sauce. They also had a horseradish sauce that was available upon request but it was pretty wimpy. The pasta carbonara ($145 Pesos) was excellent also. Fresh pasta and ingredients. Other dishes they serve include items such as Sea Bass ($395), Chipotle Shrimp ($298), Red Wine Chicken ($235), Filet Mignon ($415), Rib Eye ($452, Tuna ($325), Lobster Medallions ($410) and more. Just opened in last half of 2015,Phillipe is from France originally but, a long time San Carlos resident. The menu has some dishes I frankly never had before. Several fish dishes we tried, are prepared in several different ways. This place is a real Gem. The dining room would be my suggestion but outside dining is also very nice. There is also a small bar and bistro. You will be on the Sea of Cortez so you can never go wrong with the catch of the day. The ambience is a bit French and a bit Mexican and not a bit pretentious. Just extremely nice and that also goes for the service. For myself, I always have a hard time passing up Ahi tuna, but I've been here on many occasions and my dining companions are always anxious to return so I promise It's all good... what more can I say. We'd been sailing in remote areas of Baja for two months before we arrived back on the grid in San Carlos. We were in the mood to celebrate, and Tortuga's was a great choice. There is some flair and sophistication here; we appreciated the wide choice of appetizers and main dishes that were not "Mexican". The reviews I've seen for this place seem to have been written by folks in two categories: those people who judge strictly by American standards and those who are delighted to find something so nice after having been eating very limited diets in small villages. We fall into the latter category. We could have eaten in the very classy dining room (white linen), or outside at tables comfortably arranged, but we chose the low-key tables inside the bar -- same menu, prices, and pleasant service for any area. DO NOT EAT HERE!!! I swear on my life: one of the worst, if not the worst meal we had all ever had at a restaurant! I assure you that I am not exaggerating in any way. I have no idea why our experience was so much worse than the other reviews. Maybe this place just doesn't give a f**k about breakfast. I ordered the Machaca con Huevos, super hard to mess up. I don't know if they have ever eaten machaca anywhere else? I've had Machaca several times throughout Mexico, this was weird. First of all there were no peppers!?!? It was just poor quality beef scrambled with tomatoes, which made is all soggy. There was some onion and oregano in it. After a couple bites the taste really started to resemble the smell of dog food. I had 3, maybe 4 bites, and then I had to give up. My fiancé ordered the Huevos Rancheros, eggs over medium. Holy Shit!!! I was the most disgusting looking dish I had ever seen; and I eat some weird shit. Cheap canned tomatoes and chunks of onions, barely cooked down, dumped on top of a runny ass egg. Looked like pizza vomit. Enough said about that. My buddy got the Chilaquiles, with chicken. Actual would have been mediocre if it wasn't for the gross cheese. The cheese just seemed beyond cheap, like texturally and taste wise more difficult to stomach than half melted kraft singles. Best dish by far. His lady got the Sonoran Omelet. Burnt and dry. The vegies weren't fresh at all and the chorizo literally tasted like Slim Jim and had a plastic like texture. We all tried a bite of every ones food just for shits and giggles, except for the Huevos Rancheros; too f**king gross! We all agreed worst breakfast ever. Bad ingredients and just little effort, plus the mesh up our orders in every way possible, and we all speak enough Spanish. We all left super hungry and cursing that place.
