I'm somewhat familiar with how insurance companies work, especially dental, and they LLOVVVEEEE to make up stuff that they won't cover. I am not sure if I can blame the receptionist for billing errors, or shady insurance practices that go back on their word. Either way, I have gone to Dr. Lorna 5 times: 2 for cleaning, 2 for cavities (1 re-do of an old cavity filling I got in grade school), and 1 to fix a chip on my front tooth (which now looks amazing). I saw Dr. Chang in January 2020 for a routine check-up…read more Pros: - Very friendly staff - Dr. Chang spent a lot of time with me and listened to my concerns and clearly explained things - Used newer technology which made me feel more taken care of Cons: - Pushing procedures - Told me I needed to have my wisdom teeth removed. I then went to an oral surgeon who refused to remove them because there was nothing wrong with them. A lot of the time spent with Dr. Chang was her telling me what was wrong with my teeth. I have an overbite and she was insistent on doing something about it for my long-term health of my mouth which is fine, but she kept asking if I have to consciously close my mouth even though I said it's not an issue. She told me that I had cavities on all four of my wisdom teeth and needed to remove them before the cavity spread to neighboring teeth. I ended up making an appointment with an oral surgeon close to where I live and he took an x-ray and said my wisdom teeth were perfect and he didn't see any cavities, but even if there were any, they were minor enough that I didn't need to do anything yet. They also recommended I have a cleaning three times a year to keep an eye on some slight gum recession - not sure if that is the standard protocol - Insurance issues - Did not take my insurance and did not tell me till my exam was almost done and the receptionist gave me false information about my insurance. On Zocdoc I filtered to dentists who took my insurance, then booked an appointment with Dr. Chang. I had my x-rays taken and my cleaning was done, then the receptionist came in saying that my insurance was on a fee schedule and told me my insurance covered very little and asked me if I wanted to continue with the exam. She told me that it would cost the same at any other dentist, so I said sure let's just continue it. So I was charged $450 for something that I expected to be free, although they allowed me to pay $350. I found out later that Dr. Chang is out of network, and that is why it was on a fee schedule. I contacted Zocdoc to report false information, and Zocdoc said it is supposed to be maintained by the individual dentist office, but it is now fixed - Scheduling issues - I was supposed to have an appointment on Monday, and Friday they called and left a voicemail to cancel. I am not a fan of doctors, but she has been the only doctor in the city that took time to explain what she is doing and why she is doing it without rushing me out the door. My appointments have always been on time, and she is very thorough. For example, I have always left the dentist office for years with the no cavities. But she is the first dentist to share that while I don't have any cavities there is an area that a small cavity has formed but if I keep flossing it may never spread and may never need a filling.
