My husband and I both had been clients for 8+years but sadly will not be any longer. Dr. Shin is a really good Dentist but we had an issue with the no-how fee. They charged us a $125 no-show fee for my husband who never even made an appointment and then charged me during my last visit without advising me of this fee. When I inquired after looking at the bill from insurance, I realized there was an extra $125 charge. When I asked them, they refused to refund us, even though we did not schedule, coupled with being loyal customers, getting Invisalign with them, and other major dental work. You would think they would have gladly reversed the charge, but they did not. Be careful to check your statements BEFORE paying. Also, my annual dental cleaning should have been covered but somehow I was charged $$$ and never refunded for that, even though my insurance pays for the annual cleaning. Update to the office reply is just not true and we are truly saddened by the responses. I felt compelled to share since we did not like how charges were managed and communicated. read more

Post 3rd visit edit: So I guess I've been seeing Dr. Shin for over a year now.. and I'm still extremely happy with the service - although all my referrals have made getting an appointment a tad difficult! She's realistic and keeps both myself and Mochi in check. I'm happy to report that due to her gentle cajoling to floss more, my gums have never been healthier! Also, I'm seeing some negative reviews here.. quite disconcerting to me because I think both the Dr. and her staff are fantastic. But hey you know what, less annoying people in her clinic = more open slots for me and my friends to make appointments. And for the record, Allison is awesome AND efficient. + The best dentist in mid-town, and might I say, all of Manhattan. All my co-workers, and most of my friends go to her. She's suuper nice, uses new technology (digital x-rays, heck yeah!), is gentle on the teeth, encourages good dental practices (I need to floss more) and has extremely nice receptionists and dental assistants. They never keep you waiting, and stick to their appointments very very well. The clinic is also new and very pleasant. She also specializes in cosmetic dentistry so if you have those extra dollars and want to fix your mouth up a little, she's the one. Five stars for Five Star Service! I've haven't been to the dentist in a number of years, due to my own anxieties of thinking the worst, and all the work and pain I would have to go through. That feeling immediately left after meeting with Dr. Shin and her professional team by their calming nature, genuine care and happy attitudes! Dr. Shin understood and respected my concerns with true sense of caring and calmness. I had to have a series of work done, which consisted of a broken molar that needed a root canal, then 5 cavities filled and finally a deep cleaning. My first process was a thorough and gentle cleaning by Dr. Shin to determine what work was needed. She was very honest, and not once did I think these services weren't needed--which was a breath of fresh air. Also, Dr. Shin has a great goodie bag of products which is always a very nice gesture. Dr. Shin was extremely gentle, always asking about my comfort; the music selection she provides and the views of the Empire State also help reduce any anxiety you would experience. After my initial cleaning and consultation, I had my root canal performed by Dr. Strickman--he too was the absolute BEST! I would always hear about bad root canal experiences, but that definitely wasn't what I experienced. Dr. Stickman was beyond professional and caring, and always asking about my comfort and what more if anything he could do. He was explaining each step along the process, and I never experienced one second of pain or discomfort during or after the procedure. Both Dr. Shin and Dr. Strickman are truly gifted in their profession. After my successful root canal, my next visit consisted of two cavity filings and half-mouth deep clean; then my other appointment consisted of the remaining three cavity filings an the other half-mouth deep cleaning. Again, Dr. Shin was extremely gentle and precise with her work as Novocain was needed in these two sessions. She would show me the before and after results explaining in detail the work that was done. Again, in my honest opinion it was wonderful work! I've been coming to Dr. Shin for about three years now and even when I temporarily worked downtown, I still schlepped up to midtown (I wouldn't think of changing dentists as long as I'm a New Yorker!) Dr. Shin and her team are exceptional. Everyone is so friendly, professional and they all take the time to explain everything to you. Dr. Shin filled my first real adult cavity (at the ripe age of 30!) and I was nervous and she explained everything every step of the way. They are all so patient and gentle. The office is calm, organized and even has a lovely view of the Empire State building from most of the chairs! I also recently had a minor gum procedure done by Dr. Ziar and he's amazing as well. Wow. I never knew a trip to the dentist's office could be so pleasant! Dr. Linton was extremely thorough and informative. She explained more about my teeth in 1 visit than my previous dentist explained in 8 years...smh. Dr. Linton is also very warm and friendly. I'm actually looking forward to my next visit. At my previous dentist's office, I spent most of my visits with the hygienist and less than 5 minutes with the actual dentist. Dr. Linton spent a lot of time with me and performed the cleaning herself. I didn't realize how roughly my previous hygienists treated me until I experienced a cleaning under Dr. Linton's care. Best. Dr. Shin's office is beautiful, meticulous, and well thought out. The hygienist will play your favorite music on pandora, there's a monitor so you can see what is happening in your mouth, and everyone here is young and beautiful. However, all of the gorgeous additions must come at a price. Dr. Shin saw me as a new patient last summer. I am meticulous about my health. I see the dentist every 6 months, I get a physical up once a year, I floss, and I am up to date on my medical history and vision prescription. When I saw her, I described why I was looking for a new dentist (my insurance was a pain), my past history, and settled in for a cleaning. I usually walk away with a clean report card, and occasionally a replacement filling. After a thorough cleaning by Dr. Shin (and not a hygienist, so +1 for that), she prescribed me: 1) a replacement filling 2) a $600 mouth guard 3) additional fees to be paid because my insurance didn't cover everything, although the front desk said it did. The facts didn't add up. 1) My filling was replaced a year ago, yet she told me it was cracked and half was missing. (She showed it to me on the screen, but its a white filling - I couldn't tell anything was amiss and I didn't feel anything break recently. But even if it was broken, if it wasn't bothering me wouldn't replacing it cause more damage to the tooth?) 2) I have an invisalign retainer that I wear religiously every night - how would I damage my teeth when I already have something taking the stress off them? And there is virtually no wear on my retainers, which are molded for my teeth. Why would I need a new mouth guard, and why are you charging me $200 more than my orthodontist would? I called my orthodontist afterward, who confirmed my suspicions and further described his methodology. I just returned from my new dentist with another clean bill of health. I did not need to replace the filling Dr Shin suggested. I didn't have stress marks on my teeth. And I walked out of there without spending a dime. Take her advice with a grain of salt. Or a $600 bag of it. Also know that the Yelp filter (at the bottom of the page) has eliminated a good number of the negative reviews, thus inflating her Yelp rating. EDIT: And per her response back to me, she posts a picture of my molar as one of her Yelp photos to refute my complaint. Which is a violation of HIPPA Privacy Rights. Hmm. read more

Reasons why my review about Dr. Shin should matter to fellow Yelpers: 1. For the span of about a year, I went into Dr. Shin's office at least once a month. ** 2. I had everything from a minor teeth cleaning to a major tooth removal/ implant placement procedure done with her and her staff. 3. I have terrible teeth (by genetics-- the Irish genes, to be exact-- not because I don't brush. Ew.) Things I love about Dr. Shin and her office: 1. She plays the Food Network in her patient rooms. 2. Her sweet demeanor and totally normal and pleasant personality. 3. She didn't shame me for not flossing enough (although I'm sure she wanted to). 4. Her office gal Allison is ahhh-mazing, especially in situations of panic (i.e. getting the bill after a tooth extraction only to realize I did not have enough money in my bank account to pay). After every appointment, Allison gives you a breakdown of what Dr. Shin did, what you have coming up in your dental plan (which for me was a lot) and if insurance will cover the procedure. I don't know any physicians offices so on top of their game when it comes to breaking down insurance plans in way that you can understand. Not only that, they didn't pressure me to get any of the "extras" that would probably help my teeth out but weren't totally necessary. Allison sends appointment reminders via email and Dr. Shin is very quick for routine cleanings so it's easy to go during your lunch break. Also, not that I'm a complete idiot, but when it comes to medicine, I typically just shrug and nod when a doctor talks to me. Dr. Shin told me what was going on with my teeth in a way that was easily comprehensible and not overwhelming. As long as I live in NY and my dental plan will cover it, I plan on going to Dr. Shin. It also doesn't hurt that she's a really cool, totally down to earth person and easy to talk to. _______________ ** For the record, I take GREAT care of my teeth however for several years, I went to a dentist who did not practice preventative care, like Dr. Shin does. His philosophy was more along the lines of "let's wait 'til your teeth are rotting out of your head and we'll do something about it." My teeth are horrible so I've spent a LOT of time with Dr. Shin. She is skilled. I feel very comfortable with her and only get uncomfortable when she's drilling because hey it's not that fun, but she is so calm and sweet that it's as comfortable as a cavity filling can possibly be. Once I was in tooth pain and upstate but she waited at the office until I could show up. (She doesn't do the root canals, but this totally cute endodontist does.) I made a CD that she plays when I go in to see her, she commiserated with me over the behavior of my ex, we talk about brunch places...easily the best relationship I have ever had with a doctor. I can't say enough good things. But, I don't have dental insurance and she is amazingly, terribly expensive (I'm talking $400 and change for a cleaning and x-rays). I've been going to Dr. Shin since 2005. Despite job and insurance changes in the past 10 years, I would never consider going to any other dentist. I've had 1 root canal here and maybe a dozen fillings of all sizes over the years (I'm 45). She made me a night guard to combat my bruxing (tooth grinding at night). I bring the night guard with me for my cleanings and she checks it -- and cleans it, too! To add to other comments about flossing, I can sometimes drop the ball on that one but she never shames me for not flossing enough. Although I usually do...it's just when I get occasionally lazy. I think I've had 5 or more friends/co-workers go to her over the years. Everyone reports back to me how grateful they are for the referral. I usually tell them that going to Dr. Shin is like going to a spa. She has ergonomic chairs, top of the line digital x-ray equipment, flat panel TVs in front of your chair so you can a) watch TV to distract yourself during a procedure or b) so you can see up-close your own x-rays or photos she takes of her procedures as she does them. You actually learn something about dentistry which makes it interesting and fun (for me anyway). Dr. Shin has an undergrad degree in psychology (Yale) and her DDS degree from NYU. She also taught at NYU for a bit. She's not just my dentist, but a friend. So grateful to have her in my life -- and my mouth! read more

I have to point out that this Nick D (no photo, 1 review, mind you) review is, in my opinion both outright wrong, and also the only such opinion I have ever heard of regarding Dr. Shin. I've referred 2 people already since being referred by our own Pam S., and we all love her. The notion that she chases insurance money is ludicrous, the insurers barely pay a dentist anything for the kind of work that she does, it would be a waste of everyone's time, effort, and money. Having had an unscrupulous family dentist who had done his best to ruin my teeth when I was younger, I knew I would make as sure as possible to find the best possible dentist I can to reconstruct my teeth and smile. After listening and reading up on my options, I landed in Dr. Shin's office a few months back- and, boy, did I make the right choice. I never thought I'd leave a dentist's chair in such high spirits. But this is exactly how Dr. Shin's office operates. From day one, everyone in the office is focused on making the patient's experience as pleasant and minimally painful/invasive as possible. They're insistent on letting the patient know exactly what their thought process is, the reasons, and whatever options may exist. Above all, it's so crystal clear that Dr. Shin is not only amongst the elite dentists in the city, but that she genuinely loves what she does. I'm definitely not one to be afraid of dentists, in fact, in my high school years I went to a few while I had my braces in. But for the most part since I was 10 I've had the same family dentist for the past 20 years. But now I'm in NY and flying home for a clean-up is just out of the question. I found Dr. Shin through a co-worker who couldn't stop talking about her. Allison on the phone was a breathe of fresh air as she took down my information, and when i told her where I worked she brightened up saying "Oh! You're Justin's friend!" Apparently he had told them I might call :) It had been about 2 yrs since my last cleaning so of course Dr. Shin checked for general oral health and took x-rays. Long story short: My old dentist missed a ton of stuff that was going on, my mouth is a mess and some of my old fillings were going bad. There was so much to do we had to divide the work into four sessions. If it were up to me I'd do it all at once, but Dr. Shin is especially conscious of any discomfort that the work would give me. And good thing I listened! I've already had my first session and tomorrow is my next. She took such care in making sure nothing hurt and all my fillings were perfect, she did an even better job than my old dentist who's been practicing since she was a baby! Before Dr. Ester Linton, I hadn't gone to the dentist for two years, after my last one had suggested so many fillings and I found out that that's how dentists make their money. Well, luckily a friend I trust recommended Dr. Linton, who works at this office, and I couldn't have been happier with the results. Everyone was so warm and inviting (unlike my last Manhattan dentist's office), and Dr. Linton made me feel comfortable, even though I can be an anxious wreck in a dental office. She gave me a thorough cleaning and gave me recommendations, though didn't push any services on me. I elected to go for a night guard, as I had been grinding my teeth at night so much that I've woken up from it. But everyone was accommodating and made sure I was comfortable paying the 50% that my insurance didn't cover. They were extremely accommodating with my schedule, as well, and a week later, I had my first night guard, which Dr. Linton took extra care with making sure it fit properly and that I knew how to use it. (It's trickier than I had expected!) She gave me solid advice, and I've even started to floss (somewhat) regularly. Without a doubt, I'll be coming back to this office to see Dr. Linton. read more

I've seen Dr. Shin about three times now and she's a definite improvement over the three other dentists I've seen in Manhattan. Awesome: she's totally upfront and realistic. She makes sure you understand the possible costs before going ahead with procedures and doesn't push you at all. Also, god bless those tiny hands! When they're in your mouth for 30 mins, it makes a difference. Her office manager is fantastic. She's approachable, patient and thorough. Good: She is also pretty good about explaining what's about to happen and why and will answer questions thoroughly. Ok: I don't find her demeanor negative or positive. She's nice, but not particularly warm. I think she takes her job and her patients seriously which, quite frankly, is more important to me than a mushy dentist. Relaxing, professional experience. I found Dr.Shin from the yelp reviews and I completely agree with everyone's positive comments. From the initial greetings by the staff to the entire dental check-up and cleaning, it was calming, thorough and pain-FREE!! (both physically and emotionally) The office is gorgeous and super clean... Which i find important.. I've been to many dental offices and most are old ratty looking and have a funky dental smell. This was not the case. Everything in her office appears new and state of the art. After filling out the usual paperwork, I was greeted by Kelly, the dental assistant. She was well-dressed, very professional and had a nice calm demeanor. She took some xrays which i was immediately able to see on the computer/tv screen which was pretty neat. Dr.Shin then proceed to review the xrays and discussed what was needed. She found one cavity!!!! OMG!! I really didnt believe her but she then proceeded to show me with a cool device.. Its was some sort of camera which showed up on the computer screen. Now i was convinced of my cavity.. Luckily, the cavity she found was on my wisdom tooth.. So she recommended the tooth be removed.. the best thing is that they have a specialist there to remove tooth as well.. She proceeded to complete my cleaning.. Honestly, I've had many dental cleaning.. this was absolutely pain-FREE. I could not believe it. I was waiting nervously in the chair for the sharp painful experience, but it never happened. I am a 31 year old guy and this is the best dentist experience I've ever had. Right away I noticed how the waiting area is stylish and clean. I was warmly greeted by Madeline and Nina. I filled out paperwork while watching tv on the flat panel tv in the waiting room. I noticed that the last question on the new patient questionaire asked me what my favorite song or musical artist is. I found that odd. After Kelly took me to get X rays on the most high tech dental X ray machine I have ever seen, I sat down in the dentists chair and found out why the music question was relevant. They had pandora streaming to a tv screen hovering in front of me and it was playing a personalized music playlist based on my favorite song/musician. It was a cool, personal touch and getting my teeth cleaned was much more fun while listening to 80s music. I kind of wish I said "NWA" or Get Low by Lil Jon just to see if they would play it. By the way, the view from the dentist chair is really nice, especially on a sunny day like today. I couldn't stop staring down 40th street at the Hudson River as The Cure and U2 played in the background. Anyhow, Dr. Shin had a lot of neat gadgets I've never seen before. She used a special camera to take pictures inside my mouth. She showed me the pictures on a monitor in the room to explain to me what was going on with my teeth. She used a hydro sonic dental pick to clean my teeth, which is much more preferable to the metal scraper thingy. Dr. Shin is really nice and approachable. She has a very warm personality. I had this dentist for 2 years (2008-2010). I did cleaning, xrays, fillings, scaling and root planning. Dr. Shin: 4.5 stars / Dr. Ziar: 4.5 stars / Admin (front desk): 1 star Waiting area: really nice and clean. It felt warm and welcoming, not like a typical cookie cutter dentist waiting room. Patient room: very high tech - you can listen to Pandora via a small TV and there's equipment that allows you to view the inside of your mouth live on a big screen. Dr. Shin: exceptionally nice and friendly; remembers me every time, very much easy to talk to, answers all of my questions in detail. And this is consistent every time I visit! She's genuinely caring about my teeth, gums, and overall health. Plus, she does really great work! Dr. Ziar: nice and friendly guy; resolved issues with my gums. Admin (front desk): the worst of my experiences! Dealing with insurance and coverage is such a pain! Before every procedure, I often ask for estimates and procedure codes. Estimates usually are off from the actual bill, more often, it's significantly more. The reasons she gave were: "extra necessary filling work", "an additional exam because of my dental history - a scaling exam v. a standard exam", or "extra xrays that had to be taken". Getting procedure code is like pulling hair! The admin told me they usually don't give out codes, even after my insurance told me a dentist typically should. There just doesn't seem to be a consideration for the extra work/charges for the patient. And everything is dealt with after-the-fact. What's worse, when I ask her, her responses aren't accommodating, and more "well, that's just the way it is". Overall: work/service is great, doctors are great, but be WARNED and CAREFUL when dealing with estimates and charges on your bill. UPDATE (March 2011): when I transferred my dental records to my new dentist (which went smoothly), the admin whom I always dealt with seems to have left. I seriously love Dr. Shin. I've never really liked any dentist before, and I've tried many, but Dr. Shin is really fantastic. She's undoubtedly aggressive and proactive in her recommendations, but it always comes across to me as being part of her preventive care philosophy rather than being salesy or pushy (which other dentists I've seen have often seemed). Knowing that she is that proactive, I take what she recommends with a grain of salt and don't necessarily do everything or do it as quickly as she suggests, but I think that balances things out and it works in the end. Just got back from a cleaning with Dr. Kimberly Fields. I wish I had found her sooner! I've gone to 3 different dentists in NYC over the past few years, and they've ranged from "meh" to "just okay." But Dr. Fields was awesome. She explained everything really thoroughly, and walked me through the various pictures and x-rays so I understood everything. And on top of that, the cleaning was top notch. My teeth feel amazing! Above and beyond the excellent dental care, I was really impressed by all of the staff. Everyone was so nice and welcoming and upbeat. Exactly the kind of people you want to interact with when you're going to the dentist. The entire office was perfectly clean as well, and they seemed to have all the latest tools and technology. The views weren't bad either! If you're looking for a good dentist in NYC, I definitely recommend checking out this practice. read more

Dr. Shin and my specialist Dr. Shahlaie are THE BEST! If and until I leave NYC, they will be my dental team! Let me tell you why, without too much detail. Because of their skill, experience, and substantive expertise, they caught and fixed a congenital condition that had been missed by every other dentist for 40 years! I've always wanted a Hollywood smile and now have one because they fixed the issue perfectly. Their office rocks too. They have the latest and greatest tech. People - they have a machine that gives your temples a massage while you get a filling. A massage, people - I kid you not! If you are looking for the best, you can't to wrong with them despite the random comments that I think should be disregarded since the rest of us are 5 star fans. I guess I must be buggin since I am the only person to not give her 5 stars. I found her on yelp after seeing all the reviews I figured why not. Went there for a cleaning last wk and I was not feeling her at all. I understand I may not have the best teeth but damn, she made me feel really bad. yes I know dentist's are supposed to give you the slap on the hand saying you really need to do this and that but I felt like it was more like a slap across the face. I am not reviewing her skills, since she only did a cleaning, which was fine but no different than any other dentist ive been to but I feel like I need to comment on her demeanor towards me. Am I being overly sensitive? I don't think so. I have never walked out of a dentist and felt so pissed off. I know what you're all thinking, I have a jacked up mouth and I don't wanna realize it but whatever, I think she should be a little nicer considering those who have jacked up mouths, would mean more $ for her. **NOTE** I dont need a MUSHY dentist, i just want someone who's nice, tell me what i need to get done, and move on, i dont need the extra faces when they tell me i have all these problems. bottom line, its my opinion, my experience. i did not comment on anyones review so dont comment on mine. All around best dental experience ever! I've had the pleasure of being treated by both Dr. Shin and Dr. Linton. I have visited good dental offices who have done a fine job but it's rare to meet dentists who love what they do and genuinely care for their patients. Everyone in Dr. Shin's office is friendly and thorough with communicating everything from how to read my x-rays and photos, step-by-step treatment, and continued care. As a current patient, I was able to get emergency help on a holiday weekend. Dr. Shin's office brings TLC to the scary chair, which means the world to me. read more
