Positives are that TW&M have a large selection. I'm more of a beer geek than wine expert but can always find much more than I can afford (or should responsibly collect) on any visit. Also, the staff is generally friendly and helpful. Downsides are that the vast majority of beer is not kept cool (which to get really picky, degrades it), and what bugs the guts out of me is the persistent lack of accurate price labeling. At every visit I wander down the 12 pack aisle and come out not knowing the price of multiple items. Can't beat gathering a sixer or three of multiple new beers to try, but please get some labeling consistency. It's not that hard. read more

Truth be told I make my own wine. You can't be a nice bottle of wine for $4 but making homemade reds just isn't the same. This is where Total Wine comes into play for me. I like to go during the week when it isn't busy and just look around. They have EVERYTHING! I like that they are sorted by type because I don't personally care where the wine comes from as long as it's drinkable. They have your cheap stuff if you are throwing a party to some nice bottles of wine that I know nothing about because they are out of my wheel house as far a price goes. My range is from $10-$20 and they carry enough types and brands in that range to make your head spin. If you are looking for a specific brand this is where you will find it. I wanted a bottle of wine we had on our wedding night for our 1st anniversary and sure enough they had it. They do place information about some wines and employees chime in with their likes as well which in the past is more hit then miss for me. Take that information with a grain of salt though because I have low standards and will drink pretty much anything. Some cons...the majority of wines are massed produced, there isn't info on all of them, and most of the staff isn't super thrilled to help you. They have a BIG selection of beers and it seems to be getting bigger every time I go. They have an isle for wine and alcohol related gifts for your friends and family that I hit up during the holidays. They also offer free wine tastings on Fridays from 4 pm-7 pm and on Saturdays from noon-7 pm. If you don't live in the Durham area don't fret they have 4 other locations in the Triangle... Best broad selection of wine in the area. Some of it even aggressively priced. But the store is everything people hate about chains-employees don't seem to be happy to be there, product just sort of thrown up on the shelves, the cashier was a total zombie. Buying beer and wine should be a fun experience, but I never feel good about having been in this store. read more

Racks on racks on racks. Racks on racks on raaaaaaaacks, of wine that is. I love Total Wine because I can just about find anything I'm looking for. They're the only place that carries Gosling Ginger Beer and Barrett's Ginger Beer without having to resort to paying high dollar on the Internet. I mean you can't make a great Moscow Mule or Dark and Stormy without a great Ginger Beer. I think there's something for everyone in Total Wine, I would be amazed if you walked in the store and found nothing that suits you. Their sales associates are helpful. If you can't find what you're looking for, they will search for it in their system. You can also tell them what you're in the mood to drink and they can recommend some selections for you. read more

The quality of total wine depends on what you need. If you are looking for a daily/weekly type wine, then this is the logical choice if you are in Durham. Alternatively, if you need to buy bulk wine/beer/liquids, then go here as well. Their prices are decent, probably owing to the big box store price leverage factor. If you are looking for a high-end bottle for a special occasion, or are into wine enough that you have a cellar in your home to house a collection, then I'd probably skip total wine in favor of Wine-searcher or some other online marketplace, as online prices are often better. Total Wine also obviously won't have great vintage stuff, but that's kind of expected. Their staff is hit and miss. Usually they can point you in a good direction for some wines, but I've found some of them pushy. I'm no Robert Parker, but I know my way around wines enough such that I usually go into wine stores with a specific purpose. One staffer denigrated my potential champagne purchase because he apparently had tasted it and his recommendation side-by-side, and thought that his choice champagne was better. I had also sampled his recommendation before, and I ardently disagreed with his opinion; I'm not sure this is a difference merely of opinion, as I checked cellar-tracker.com and everyone else seemed to agree with me. He also seemed to say that it was a better buy because it came in more fancy packaging. I'm pretty sure the only consequence of fancy packaging is inflated price, not better product (let's face it, you're buying the stuff for the liquid inside, and everything else is going in the trash once that liquid is consumed). They have a great selection of wine! This place reminds me of the west coast version of Bev Mo. The servers were very friendly! It's close to other places too like DSW and a nail place. One other thing that I like about this place is that they have wine tastings! Will be back here again! read more

What is not obvious, at least from the name, is that they actually have a great selection of beer here including a large variety of individual bottles. The staff has always been super helpful too which is great since it's very easy to miss what you are looking for. read more

I wanted to get a special wine for Mother's Day dinner. Since I am familiar with French wines, I bought a Saint-Emilion Chateau de Ferrand, 2010, at a cost of $39.99. Although I usually choose less expensive wines, this is a special occasion and I believed I was buying a true Grand Cru wine. Well, this wine almost ruined our fine dinner of cassoulet, quail and potatoes au gratin. It is an extremely disappointing wine. It tastes syrupy with an acidic bitterness that was very unpleasant to the palate. To save the evening, I uncorked a Guigal Cote du Rhone which didn't need to breathe for too long and cost $13.49. Surprisingly, this more modest wine was better than the Saint-Emilion. We find the Saint-Emilion undrinkable and are sorry to say we have thrown away $40. So beware of the pricey wines at Total Wine that are touted with labels such as Alfio Moriconi Selection and Wine Spectator Choice. And stay away from the Saint-Emilion referenced above. read more

Great store with a good selection. The biggest problem I had was an interaction with the Assistant Manager Jonathan. The guy could not have possibly been more rude. Luckily the rest of the staff was very helpful. Jonathan could stand to learn a lot from every other employee in that store. read more

Our visit here was such a huge disappointment. The one plus is that there is a lot of stock in this store. However, it is so poorly merchandized and well, just plain messy. If the staff spent even the slightest bit of time organizing instead of just chatting amongst themselves and eating on the job, the displays could be more welcoming and shoppable. Unfortunately, their signage isn't correct and we had a hard time finding what I was looking for. I made the mistake of asking for help. There were no other customers in the store but the cashier acted like we had just ruined her day. And then it was great to hear Todd and the cashier mocking us behind our backs. Great customer service you have there there, Total Wine! I'd venture a guess you'd do a whole lot more business if you hired some folks with even just slight customer service skills.
