My first visit to Pittsboro and I probably would never have stumbled across The Plant and Fair Game…read moreBeverage Company because they're a bit of a ways from the center of town. But they're a member of an RV hospitality program and I decided that this would be way more interesting than a Cracker Barrel parking lot for an overnight. And it is. Fair Game distills their own spirits, they have a great selection of beers and they are masters of the charcuterie game. The tasting room is a pleasant little spot with wifi and power which was great for me on my own. But it's a comfy spot if you're meeting up with friends, with tables inside and out. Plus you have access to the other places in The Plant including a Mexican place across the way that looks tremendous. I stayed in Fair Game, enjoying a local draft beer and then the lovely bartender Desiree mixed a Fair Game Collins for me. A delicious combination of their house-made gin, which she customized for me with less simple syrup so that I could try to stay somewhere close to ketosis. It was a very pleasant evening for sure. Good place to buy wine. Not such a good place to sit down and enjoy it…read more We SO want to love Vino, but after living in Pittsboro for 8 years now, we are struggling to really, really feel at home there. The staff is almost always cold and indifferent. Maybe it's us, although we're kind of quiet. We greet, take a seat, order from the menu, and try not to ask too many questions and just get a glass of wine or buy a couple of bottles to take home. But we have not had a truly welcoming person yet, and we have visited the place innumerable times in all of our years here, first in their upstairs, smaller space and now in the new, street-facing store. Yesterday we encountered a new cold shoulder when we went in for a glass of wine and some "nibbles" at they call them. There is a menu with charcuterie board offerings at the bar, right next to the wine-by-the-glass menu. So, we figured, we'd order a couple of bites from that menu along with our glass of wine. The bartender stared blankly at us and showed us the shelf in the corner where all the offerings are stored in their original packaging, and asked us to help ourselves from the shelf. We knew about the items on the shelf, but we thought those were to take home. What was the purpose of the menu at the bar then, if you can't order from it, like you do the wine?! She said, "you can take what you need from the shelf, unless you want me to run around the store and bring them to you." I thought that was rude. Some of the things we wanted needed some sort of silverware (like cheese, canned things, or olives), and she begrudgingly said "sure, I'll give you plates and forks for that." We have been to wineries and wine shops before, but I have never seen anyone anywhere putting a menu in front of you at the bar and expecting you to go fetch from the shelf on your own. If this is their business model that is very much OK, but this was not very clear, and it felt like we were in the wrong asking for something we should instead fetch ourselves. We do find some wines in there to take home that we can't find anywhere else, and we will continue to buy wine there and support them as a local business. We know it's hard to keep a business afloat in these times, and we want to help where we can. But we would also love to see some effort on their part to actually welcome people in. I think this would only do them good.

Pittsboro ABC Store - Pittsboro has 2 ABC stores. This one is in town just down from the circle.

I parked here during my lunch break because Doherty's Irish Pub (next door) had no parking available. The only other option is the lot across the street, which is honestly unsafe -- drivers rarely notice the crosswalk or people walking across, and it feels dangerous just trying to get over there. Since I had already ordered and paid for my food, I just needed to run in and grab my bag -- literally a one-minute stop. The ABC lot was completely empty with plenty of open spaces, yet an employee came outside and told me I couldn't park there unless I was shopping at the ABC store. What made it worse is that there were no customers there at all -- it felt like she was just waiting for someone to pull in so she could say something. Pittsboro is a small town, and people here have always treated each other with courtesy and understanding. To suddenly change that attitude and nitpick over something so small completely disrupts the community feel this town is known for. I understand the signs, but there was no flexibility or neighborly spirit shown -- especially toward someone who has supported this store in the past. Because of this, I'll be taking my business to other locations.

So...what's the actual name of this place? Bottles & Cans Beer and Wine Shop or Taps and Social?…read moreJudging by the signage and the receipt, it seems to answer to both. Either way, it delivers exactly what you'd hope for--a great selection of drinks in a relaxed, social setting. After finishing dinner at Shijiri, we had a little over an hour to kill before heading home, so we wandered over here. We decided to grab seats inside rather than on the front patio. The interior is surprisingly spacious, with plenty of seating whether you prefer pulling up to the bar or sinking into one of the comfortable sofas. Our tasting lineup included the refreshing Sangria Slushy, Anderson Valley's Wild Turkey Bourbon Barrel Stout, and Komana's Hefe the Hefeweizen. While enjoying our drinks, we spent some time hanging out with Aria, the Bouvier des Flandres, who was incredibly friendly and happily accepted all the attention. She definitely added to the welcoming atmosphere. Before leaving, we couldn't resist browsing the shelves and ended up taking home a build-your-own six-pack featuring beers from 3 Floyds, Edit, Middle James, Two Tides, Grimm, and Anytime Beer Co. The selection is excellent for anyone who enjoys discovering craft beers beyond the usual grocery store offerings. Whether you're looking to enjoy a drink on-site, build a mixed six-pack to take home, or simply relax with friends (or make a new four-legged one), this place checks all the boxes. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in the area.

Dropped by Bottles & Cans recently and had a good experience…read more Parking was very convenient because Bottles & Cans is part of a strip mall, so no problems there. They had a pretty decent selection of beers available, and I was impressed that you could get pretty much any type of beer as a singleton (versus having to buy a 4 pack or whatever). I did feel like the refrigerated section could have been a bit larger, but they did have a few good choices in there. They had a big selection of beers available on tap, and while I didn't partake this time, I was kind of tempted by the quadrupel :) The bartender was nice and helpful throughout my visit. Overall, if you're in the area, this seems like a nice place to stop and grab a beer. I've seen slightly better selection of beers elsewhere, but I do think you could find something you like here :)
