They're packed with history, food pairings, cocktail making ideas, and so much information. I've discovered new brands, learned things I never knew, and even met some great people. One of the best parts is getting to sample everything from budget friendly bottles to high end selections without breaking the bank. I first stumbled across these classes while shopping at Total Wines for a sweet wine. I had no idea they offered them, and I was pleasantly surprised by how affordable they were. Since then, I've attended eight classes, and I've genuinely enjoyed every one. My favorite has been the Champagne class, and my favorite instructor is Illick he always does an amazing job making the classes both educational and fun. These classes are perfect for date nights, solo outings, girls' nights, coworker outings, or even a fun get together with friends and family. Every class includes a spread of sandwiches, fruit, crackers, cheese, cookies, and bottled water. They have from $20-$40 or free (depending on the class), you get all of those snacks plus 7-8 tastings. For me that's a great value! As an added bonus, they also give you 10% off your purchase after the class. Total Wine on Holcombe is called Total Wine West University location. The parking lot hare has small spaces with customers not knowing how to park nor drive. The store looks like most Total Wine locations in the Houston area. The wine tasting bar was NOT open as the hours said it should be open. Pedro in bourbon was very nice and helpful. They market themselves as the largest independent retailer of fine wines, with 283 locations across the country, founded in 1991. There are quite a few of them in California close to where we live. I did try to use an in-app coupon tied to my account, but it didn't apply when checking out. The cashier mentioned that certain coupons were not valid in all states...one would think that the app could recognize that when activating to save the hassle. read more

Fun fact Total Wine carries Kinobi Gin. I say that because I was looking for it at the other large chain and it was almost always out of stock. The samples are VERY generous lol and the staff is very knowledgeable. Whether I was picking out a wine for a friend, asking for recommendations based on a limited amount of information, or just talking life with the staff they were knowledgeable and engaging. I've been to a few locations and this is my go to one because of the staff and since its down the street from me. While I don't think they're quite as inexpensive local wine and liquor stores (#1), I still think Total Wine is one of the better places to score a bottle of booze. Their quality service, clean layout, and most importantly, outstanding selection means that I never walk out empty handed. No matter how often I'm looking in other places, I end up coming back here to find what I'm looking for. The store is big and loaded with inventory. They have a good selection on just about every spirit and a fairly extensive variety of wines from all over the world. I would recommend that folks check the website to ensure that the bottles are there before making the trip. Best of all, one can pay online prior to going. If I am in a time crunch, I will sometimes just drop by and peruse whatever they have on hand. The staff that works there is good about helping folks find what they want. Even the folks there giving out alcohol samples (#2) are kind and sweet. The only time they end up running out of things is during holidays and summer weekends. They have a rewards program, which I would recommend looking into, especially if one happens to buy alcohol often. The parking is a little tight at times and sometimes there are lines to check-out. Well stocked. Every time I have been here at least 1 employee asks if I need help without me asking. How refreshing They have pretty much anything you can think of from beer to wine to liquor and all the mixers that go with it. Even have some high quality snacks to go with it. They always seem to be doing some tasting going on. And check this out. On a busy Saturday evening you will not wait more than 5 minutes to check out. I went to the store to pick up a case of wine for a funeral. I asked for what the grieving family had requested, and the man helping me, looked at me with distain and asked me, "why would you wanna buy that?" He was so rude. I couldn't believe it. I told him that I was buying it because it was what I was asked to buy. I also told him that I thought the question was rude. He then started yelling at me about being nice on a Saturday morning. This makes finding what I need very quick so I can get in and get out. I also love the super selection of miniature bottles, they make great gifts!!! This is an amazing store. I visit frequently & it's a nice switch up from Specs. You can sometimes find better deals here & the look/feel of the store is better. I like that they give wine samples from the clean kiosk in the center of the store; very inviting. Ten points fact that they have both a large selection of wine & liquor under one roof. To add, you can find Sugarfina champagne gummies here. This is a go-to place for alcohol-related gifts. They have tons of cute, personal glasses; an above average selection of mini bottles; and lots of gift packages of mixers. Cute greeting cards & bags are located near the front. Typically when I go to this location people are very friendly and helpful so I'm not going to give it a bad review because of this one experience. However on this particular day the cashier's bedside manner needed a lot of work. If she had a bad day she should have either stayed at home or put on a better face. It was not the typical up beat and helpful attitude you experience when you visit this store. With a new player in town for das booze the wife and I made a quick pilgrimage to see what's what. Specs this ain't. Let's get this out of the way right off the bat. The do not have...how should we say...bottom shelf here. Nikolai and cheap vodkas need not apply. If you want the $10 handles of whiskey or vodka...a-Specs you must go. Selection though will leave you wanting for naught. They have an amazing selection separated by region of old world. If new world they are separated by grape type. Brilliant layout. Staff? Brilliant. We had a wine tasting whilst we were there and the rep was very knowledgeable and described the store layout to us. For ultra cheap booze that will just be mixed I will still probably still go to Specs. For the ease of layout of the wine section. I will probably return here. Great store!! Talk about selection! I don't know what it is about this place, but I find it easier to navigate than the competition, so I always leave feeling like I got what I needed (and more than I needed!). This is a great place to get beer! The selection is incredible and there's always a bunch of interesting beers to investigate. I really like how spacious the venue feels as well - lots of room to walk around and explore. If I had one small complaint, it's that not much of the (interesting) beer is refrigerated, so I always have to cool it down myself when I get home :) I don't think that the store has a ice bath, either, but I could be wrong about that. Finally, this Total Wine has lots of parking, so it's always easy to find a parking spot. I will definitely be back here (probably in the near future!). read more

This Total Wine is pretty great overall. Huge selection, organized store, and a few super helpful employees. First a few complaints: one time I came here a few years ago to buy a huge amount of wine, seltzers, and liquor for an engagement party. My cousin drove me, shopped around a bit with me, then left to go pick up our friend. He was waiting for me in the car outside when I was checking out. Randomly, the hispanic female manager at the time tells me my "guest" needs to come in and get ID'ed. Why???? Why would we come in and buy so much alcohol if we were underage?? It makes no sense. I was in such a hurry organizing everything and had to argue on the phone with my cousin, who refused to come in based on principle--why did he need to be ID'ed?! So I had to just leave after doing all that shopping, completely wasting my time. I ended up going to Spec's, who were so much nicer than that ridiculous manager. I didn't come back for 2 years. Now, I don't see that manager anymore and the staff are so much nicer and reasonable here. The selection is still huge and I shop here with my boyfriend now. If that horrible woman manager ever comes back, I'm taking my business back to Spec's. The next complaint happened to my boyfriend only recently. There is a manager who is older who was incredibly rude to him. My boyfriend brought attention to a bottle on the shelf that was actively leaking and the manager just stared at him and laughed. He did nothing to help my boyfriend, who was doing THEM a favor by telling them about a leaking bottle. He didn't even help my boyfriend get a napkin, but my boyfriend made it clear to the manager how upset he was about his attitude. Other than that, we still plan to come back here. read more

I am a fan! It just opened up about a week ago, and just steps away from their competition (Specs, that's you!). Total Wine, way to go for being brave enough to give Specs a little healthy competition! If you are a Specs customer, than you know that not all of their locations are the same. Some are large and awesome (Midtown, talking about you!) and then some are jinky, small and don't have a lot of inventory. I would say Total Wine competes directly with the Specs in Midtown. It's huge! It's nicely laid out, it's clean and trendy and organized. It has a upper scale feel and they play cool music in the background. It's cold in there though! They have to keep all that lovely inventory nice and chilled, which is fine by me. I will shop with my jacket on during the Houston summer, it's worth it for these prices! The do regular wine and spirits tastings in the middle of the store. On top of having a fantastic wine selection (I mean a HUGE wine selection), they also have a good spirits and beer selection as well. Not that I care, but they also have cigars. There is also a little food section as well as a gift section too. But ok, so you think, yeah yeah, it's a big new store that's fancy. Probably expensive, whatevs. NO, it's very reasonable. I would say they compete directly with Spec's "Cash" price. Now you can get your booze and not worry about having to have cash on you (because who does these days?) or your freaking debit card either. They run a Mix 6 deal on their wines, meaning any 6 bottles or more, you start to get a 10% discount on their already low price! And this is 6 or more, not just for every 6. Meaning, if you buy 8, you still get 10% those additional 2 without having to get an additional 6, like some places do (Kroger). The staff is awesome, very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I might make a special trip to come for the wine or spirit tastings just to have an excuse to go back. Our first trip earned us 10 bottles of wine, a bottle of whiskey, and 5 samples for, wait for it.....$101. Yep, sounds good right? I actually look forward to going back! read more

Love this location as well as Total Wine in general. Great place for their selection as well as their really amazing prices. Love that every location has a humidor with a huge selection of very fine cigars. Only place I've been able to find a full range of Rocky Patel and Oliva. I also found La Aroma De Cuba here which is my new favorite. They really just have everything. The selection of micro brews is incredible. It's pretty epic that I live right down the street too. Although I'm a loyal Spec's customer, Total Wine is definitely becoming my go to place for my shopping needs. Total Wine has a huge selection of beer, wine, and liquor and they will ship a specific bottle to their store for you if you can't find what you're looking for! The store is huge and well organized. You can easily find what you're looking for, but browse! They offer so much, it's worth moseying your way around the store and checking everything out. Like some other reviews, Total Wine is very stingy with seeing your driver's license. One time SO and I came in and even though he was the one purchasing and I obviously look older than 21, they refused to sell us anything until I went home and brought my driver's license back. But I guess if following the law to the T is your biggest downfall, then you don't really have that big of a problem. read more

I recently attended a paid wine class at this location and unfortunately didn't find it as enjoyable as classes taken at other locations. With the instructor here barely over the legal drinking age, I was a little put off at his inability to speak from tasting experience. His lack of knowledge widened each time he ventured off the topic of the slide show. I found myself bored, as if I was watching a book report being given with very little pre preparation and organization. This experience was then worsened by the lack of snacks and bites usually offered to accompany the beverage tastings! A small tray of bites and a few bags of dried fruit for a room of 20+ people?!?
