If your child loves acting, singing, hamming it up, or just being around kids who do, then Town Hall Theatre is for you! My newly arrived neighbors who have four kids of all ages were asking me where they should send their rambunctious kids this summer and I immediately told them about Town Hall. They have new camps that start all summer long, so the schedule can work around vacation schedules. It's a great venue downtown, and the staff is super sweet and welcoming. Nice historic venue to see small production. We attended a Progressive Rock show. It was small and fully attended by prog-rock fans for a local musician and other bandmates. We watched a great rock show of musicians playing in pure joy. Quaint setting. But good for this rock show. Give yourself time to park as there's no lot that we saw. This is a hidden gem in Lafayette! We went to see Human Error and True West. We are so fortunate to have this theater so close by.

We have seen several plays at Lafayette's Town Hall Theater over the years, the most recent being an adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. Every play has featured great acting and wonderful performances - consistently top-notch. This theater company puts the lie to the thought that you must spend $250, and fight Bay Bridge traffic, SF parking, etc. to see decent plays. Tickets are ordered easily through the theater website and can be picked up at Will Call in the lobby before the show. Drinks and refreshments are available in the lobby prior to the performance, and before our show there were even a couple harpists performing! Stadium seating is available and all seats have an excellent view. When deciding on seats, know that seating is divided into lower (A-G)and upper sections (H-L), and each of these into left (odd numbers) and right (even numbers) seating areas. It's not clear from the seating map, but if you want an aisle seat, certain of the sections end in a wall on one side - no aisle. The lower seating section left side (odd) has a right aisle; the right side (even) has aisles on both left/right sides. For the upper section, the right (even) section has a left aisle. The left (odd)section has an aisle on the right. Sorry for all the left/right odd/evens - clear as mud? The one drawback: the theater has no parking - no surprise for Lafayette - all parking is on the street. The main option is farther up School Street, away from Moraga Road. Get there early, because the later you get there the farther you will have to walk. We were dismayed to discover - after our Saturday night play let out - School Street has no streetlights! It is pitch black - zero visibility - trying to walk the perhaps several blocks back to your car in the dark. You cannot see anything: cracks in the sidewalk, curbs, nothing. My wife hung onto me for dear life afraid of taking a tumble in her heels. Seniors especially watch out; in fact, this may be why an abundance of seats were available for the evening performance while all three Sunday matinees were already sold out. I cannot believe Lafayette, obviously knowing the situation, does nothing. Apparently it will take an injured theatergoer to blow a hole in the city budget for a few streetlights to be added here. A great community theater, and although no fault of theirs, minus one star for the dangerous night time trek back to parked vehicles. read more

I went to the Town Hall Theater with a friend in a wheelchair. He was able to go up the elevator to get to the theater, however, when he tried to leave, he could not because the elevator did not work. I was told that the 50 amp fuse had blown and they did not have and could not get a replacement fuse. What if he was stuck in the elevator? He had to wait over 30 minutes for the Fire Department to come and help him and his wheelchair get down a flight of stairs. This is irresponsible on the part of the management! In addition, the management made 110 of us wait in a small lobby- packed like sardines- for 50 minutes- as the band ran over on the sound check. I understand musicians are "artists," but it would have been much more considerate if they had started sound check earlier. And I was told that the management kept us waiting there- after soundcheck was done- to try to have people buy more alcohol from the bar. This was very inconsiderate of their customers! Finally, the manager told us all that someone had parked in a no parking zone and she was not going to let us in until someone fessed up to this! read more

I went to an event at this theater and am very upset with way the management handled the flow of patrons. The tickets said the show was from 2:00 to 6:00. It was actually 3:00 to 6:00. I was there in line at 1:00 and had to stand outside until they opened the doors at 2:00. Then they made everyone wait in the foyer for another 45 minutes before letting anyone enter the seating area. Everyone was jammed up by the stairs right where people were trying to still come in the front door. It was horrible being jammed together for so long. The foyer is only supposed to hold 80 people and there was well over 120. I heard the management wants us to buy drinks while we're waiting but nobody would leave their place by the stairs for fear of not getting a good seat! Then after standing in one spot shoulder-to-shoulder for nearly an hour, the manager got on the stairs and says "nobody gets a seat until some fool moves their illegally parked car!" I wanted to scream!!!! It just makes more sense to let people go find their seats and then mosey back down the stairs to get a drink. I'll never go back. read more

I watched my first musical at Town Hall Theatre over the weekend. Smokey Joe's Cafe. I was smiling the moment I searched for my seats because they were playing oldies, which I absolutely love. The cast were all so talented and I loved watching the performers sing and dance! I was a grinning fool during the whole program. The program actually inspired me to look into the song writers and I hadn't realized how many songs were written by them! This place gives back to the community. I'm on the board for parents of special needs kids in Lafayette and they helped us with a very special fundraiser by offering a deep discount to use their facility. They put the "Community" in Community Theater. The theater is small and charming and is over 100 years old. You'll have a good view of the stage wherever you sit. They have a snack and bar (no hard liquor - beers and wine) that was very reasonably priced and I believe you can bring them to your seats. Definitely going to go back and back and back. read more

This is a lovely local theater. I have seen a few productions here and they have been consistently good. Although the theater is small with no "bad" seats, when purchasing tickets online they show you where your seats will be on a little venue map. If you don't like the look of the seats you can click on a button to request another spot. The only time I took advantage of this option was when I was buying tickets to see The Graduate and the first seats that came up were in the first row. Since The Graduate is known for containing some nudity I opted for seats a few rows back. The theater is located near some great restaurants so I suggest parking near the theater (there is ample street parking) and then walking to a nearby restaurant for a pre-theater dinner. The theater staff are all incredibly nice and obviously enthusiastic and excited about their jobs. A full bar is available and they have even had drink specials to correspond with the theme of the current production. read more

Paid $32.50 to see the Band Midnight Flyer. The bill says, "doors at 6:30 show at 7:30" http://www.yourtownmonthly.com/event/midnight-flyer-musical-tribute-eagles/ Went into the theater at 7:30 waited 15 min and got an MC that did the usual, "upcoming shows...." It's now 8:00 and he proceeds to go on this diatribe about; war and Gold star moms and that, " tonight we are going to learn about them....". Huh ?? Is that a peace sign on the back of your clip board? He says, "please watch this video," like I have a choice? Turns out it's a 15 minute segment from 60 minutes about gold star moms, mothers of soldiers who have died. I'm here to be uplifted by music, not brought down by news of death and war., I sat patiently a little pissed but figured ok it will start after this, but no... He proceeds to bring out the main figure from the segment who talks about her dead son as she weeps.. I'm getting really bummed out now and seriously thinking of leaving, respect and consideration for this woman kept me seated. Then the MC proceeds to ask for $5,000.00 From the crowd and hands over $100.00 to this woman and says, "all we need is $4900.00 more...?" Seriously!!? There's a time and a place for this and had this been advertised as a preface to and part of the evening then ok, but it was not and a full hour after the advertised show was to start...! The Show; The PA was horrible, the sound man was not paying attention, singers where missing from the mix, the ones that where in it where to loud, solos where NOT brought up, overall volume was really offensively loud for a small room like that. For $32.50 you can see a show at Yoshis or Freight and Salvage have killer sound and not get bummed out or pimped for money. read more

We saw Vampire Weekend here a few weeks ago. I'm sure that's not the typical act at this theater, but in any event, I feel like I got a feel for the room. It's just under 200 people. Completely civilized with no spread-em/pat-down/present-your-cavities search or anything. Every seat is good. The sound was fine. It was like seeing Vampire Weekend in your living room pretty much. It's a fairly sit-down venue. Took a while for people to get up and grooving. I don't know if they're going to continue to try to get national acts, but, provided you can get tickets, it's a pretty cool little spot to see a big band. read more

What a joyful and charming group to interact with! Changes in recent years have brought a refreshing face-lift to both the program line-up as well as the theater building itself. Some pretty serious visiting shows and performers have been making appearances. It's been an especially exciting this season -- out-of-town guests have even gone out of their way to check the line-up prior to flying in. The expanded children theater experience has been steadily finding its unique voice and approach; children/youth theater opportunities range from preschool through high school. Program includes theater education, play/story breakdown, memorization, performance, voice and diction development. If you are an avid theater goer or love live performances in general, make sure to look through their membership options (even flex memberships) as well as get onto their mailing list for the private announcements. My husband and I have been to many small theatres, but I can genuinely say this is one the best I have ever been to!!!!!! I found the play on Groupon and I am so glad I did! I loved the pianist before the show and being able to have a drink and take it into the theatre is amazing, not many places will allow it! The volunteers were so sweet and helpful, their bar/snack bar took card (huge kudos), and everything was so clean! The theatre was gorgeous the lights were so cute. We saw Woman in Mind and it is one of the best shows I have ever seen. The cast did an OUTSTANDING job, they are all so amazingly talented. We will most certainly be coming back!!!! read more

I watched a Shakespeare play here this summer. They had a bar where I could get beer, wine, snacks and could bring them upstairs with me to see the performance.... I thought that was fantastic. I noticed they had an elevator for anyone needing it and the restrooms were clean. The theatre was cozy and intimate. The best part was my nephew's performance as Sir Andrew. I saw Picasso @ the Lapin Agile on it's closing night. I am so glad friends bought tickets & I said Yes! It was so funny. I had no idea what to expect but DID NOT expect to be laughing so hard at 1 point, that I'd have tears running down my face. It's that moment I wonder "Will I be able to stop this & not break out in giggles?" I was mesmerized. All the characters were great yet surprising to me: Germaine stood out. I couldn't take my eyes off her performance. I just kept wanting to see her reaction to the other characters. Loved it! I also loved that they crossed the "4th Door". This is a small, intimate theatre. Friends, family & the community are sitting 2 feet from you. To acknowledge us, pulls us into the story more. Standing ovation was deserved. I am seeking out more performances by the troupe & looking forward to seeing more. We love the Town Hall Theater and come whenever we are in town. We used to bring the kids to every show but now they all have other things going on. But nevermind, the plays here are quality and you don't need to drive into the city to get some culture. The theater is small and intimate, and we frequently bump into people we know. We like to go early to drink wine and eat snacks before the show, which they have available in the lobby. (Only beer and wine, no cocktails.) Seats are comfortable and every seat has a good view of the stage, even if you're sitting way off to the side. The auditorium has pretty good acoustics. We are always pleased with the theater productions here, Shakespeare and musicals are especially fun. Productions seem to be high class and well done. Our son had a bit-part in one of the shows and all the actors really shined. The down side to this theater is the parking. There is no lot so you have to park on the street. On busy nights when there are shows, you may have to park a fair bit away, requiring a hike. It's quite dark because there are no streetlights. read more

The Town Hall is a local jewel! The theater seats about 80, with every seat being a great one. We saw Smokey Joe's Café recently and were very impressed with the talented performers who sang and danced their way through a neighborhood story without a single spoken word. Prices are reasonable and it's terrific to support live performances. Kudos to the staff and actors for providing such an entertaining evening. Keep the creativity flowing! read more

Maybe 2 1/2 stars. Last night we saw "The Graduate", the first production of this year's season. Last year's season included "Moonlight and Magnolias", beautifully reviewed in February by Elisa V., and a final play, mercifully lost in memory, written by Kevin Morales, who wrote the brilliantly funny "Let's Go To Casablanca", as his final effort before leaving the company. Let's just say it read like a college term paper, hastily conceived and written and paper thin. The acting was OK. We left at intermission when it had completely failed to take shape or engage us. For financial reasons the theatre has retreated from its ambitions to join ACT, Berkeley Rep and Cal Shakes as a Regional Equity company and is functioning more as a community theatre. Out of hope and a sense of obligation we signed up for another season this year, but it'll probably be our last. Despite being its penultimate performance the actors didn't inhabit their roles well, although as the play progressed they improved. We didn't leave at intermission because we were sufficiently engaged to want to see the second half, but basically it was little theatre and if we wanted that we could go down the hill to the Contra Costa Civic Theatre here in El Cerrito, whose productions have generally been top notch. So we'll see what the reviews are like for the coming performances and if they're not good we'll give the rest of the season a miss. Too bad. We loved our first taste of what this theatre could do, but nothing has risen to that level since. read more

My husband and I love going to Townhall Theater. It's very small but they put on some great performances with extremely talented actors. Some of our recent favorites are Song of the Nightingale and An Ideal Husband. We also really enjoyed the 2016 radio-style reading of Night of the Living Dead. Joey's Cafe has been the best musical I have attended in person in my entire life. The cast is SO talented, their voices are incredible and somehow in between signing and dancing they also have the power to make you laugh. YOU must come to this play before it's over, this theater is really the most hidden treasure Lafayette has. read more

This little theater is a gem! The seating is comfortable and I don't think there is a bad seat in the theater. We saw A Civil War Christmas and it was stellar! The current production continues my thorough enjoyment of this regional theatre. They consistently provide quality productions with talented actors. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is a great example. Well cast and directed with a creative set design, this version of the 1960's movie and the original short story is truly enjoyable and thoroughly entertaining. A great venue, if you like old wooden buildings from the frontier days, which I do. Local productions, many with amateur (but talented) performers. Original plays. Full bar. Quaint, small, every seat excellent. Free street parking. Very friendly and accomodating box office staff. Plenty of good restaurants in the area. Not inexpensive, but not outrageous either. Very poorly done productions. Obviously unprofessional acting. Not to mention Town Hall Kids. My child did a play there once and never again will I pay 300 dollars for a musical I could have directed and choreographed. Not to mention the kids who have done many plays before are obviously favorited and get all the parts. It was very unprofessional and unorganized for sometimes they would email the night before to say she had a rehearsal. read more
