I really do not like to leave negative reviews because sometimes businesses have bad days and there's usually nothing more to it. I really liked the owner she was great and a sweet person. My fiancé and I both had 3 pairs of pants to be hemmed. One pair of my pants I knew would be a little difficult because they are made of a very sheer fabric and they're kinda like bellbottoms. When I picked them all up I didn't check them because of the outstanding reviews on Yelp. When I gave them to my Bf, the 1st pair he tried on it looked like one side was ready for a flood, lol. Turned out that each of my Bf pant's stitching was uneven with one leg higher than the other! My designer bellbottoms were very uneven as well but not as bad as my Bf and since mine are bellbottoms no one can tell... my other 2 pairs were uneven as well but not so bad that they're not wearable, but just bad enough I wouldn't wear them to a dressy function. Also, they're really slow, it took 2-3 weeks! I have found places that hem while you wait and for less money since. This was just my experience because they do have good reviews so hopefully it's an isolated incident. read more

Chizuko is the best tailor ever! And I've tried my share. Her price is better than fair (but NOTE: she only accepts cash, as Ches B. said) and her work is worthy of a designer's house. I'm not sure what some of the negative Yelpers are talking about down there, but she's definitely friendly. She called me to tell me when my bridesmaid dress was done and even recognized me when I walked through the door. How is that not friendly? She talked me through everything she did -- from taking the zipper in to adding an extra charge for the elastic. Everything was upfront and honest. I was planning on spending 3 times as much as she charged me. And, as I said, her work was impeccable. This is absolutely the most important aspect of picking a tailor and she nails it. I don't live in San Pedro anymore, but I will make the drive out to get my designer clothes altered by her. Seriously, BEST TAILOR EVER! read more

I hate to write this review, because I really wanted to love my local tailor. Chizuko is a very kind and honest woman, and she acknowledged that this was the first time in 15 years that her work had turned out like this. I had 2 blouses and a dress I needed hemmed. I am a petite woman, but only a bit needed to be taken off. The dress was fine, but unfortunately the two blouses had a curved hem which Chizuko unfortunately took too much off and the hem was quite uneven. I could tell it really upset her. She acknowledged the mistake and we agreed on a solution that satisfied me. The problem though was that I had been waiting for a month for her to finish these pieces. I am very patient, but I have been to other tailors that did more in shorter time. I want to give 3 stars because she was very polite, but I did have a problem with her pricing. She did want to charge more than I usually have to pay for similar work. We agreed on a price, and then when I came to pick them up she wanted to charge more. I would have appreciated a call to discuss it before throwing it at me when I came to pick them up. Again, she is a very nice lady. I hope others have a better experience. (Also, side note: She has very strong perfume, so be prepared.) read more

I didn't give it one star because I didn't actually get anything altered. I took a sport coat in to get it tailored. She had never seen a coat with unfinished sleeves. I put on the coat and she didn't look at the fit at all, she just asked what I wanted. I said I wanted the sleeves shortened because they were completely covering the cuffs of my dress shirt, she said it was fine. I went somewhere else. She was very nice but she doesn't know how a men's coat should fit. She may do small things well but she isn't a tailor. read more

Chizuko is incredible at what she does. My favorite experience with her was when I took a dress in that I had gotten off of the clearance rack at Marshals for $8.00. I should probably mention that it was about 6 sizes larger than my normal size. Most tailors would have seen this as being overwhelming and probably would have turned me away, but Chizuko was glad to help and make it work! When I went to my friend's wedding in my new and improved gown, everyone told me that it was stunning and asked me where I got it. I gave all of the credit to Chizuko because she transformed it into the beautiful fitted gown that I wanted it to be. I just dropped off my maid of honor dress today and I know that she'll work her magic on that one as well. She is a life saver! read more

Honesty is an essential part in business, and you can definitely find it at Toyo's Alterations. I took a few things that didn't fit me properly and Chizuko took a good look at the suits. She has a very good eye in her examinations, and will give you a detailed assessment and explain what she'll do to fix it. She'll take a fashion magazine and show you things such as the proper length of a sleeve, or how much of the crotch area should be tightened, etc. She is also up-to-date on the current fashion, so she knows her stuff very well, whether it may be modern or classic (e.g. J. Crew men's suit sleeves are getting shorter) If it's difficult, she'll tell you. I was willing to throw down whatever price she told me, but she gave me an honest advice - better to buy a new one than to pay $100+. The one negative review I see here by Mike P. is flawed, to say the least. I heard the story from Chizuko and apparently this customer was asking for something that was completely unorthodox. Maybe he wanted to be a style pioneer or something but he asked for the sleeves to be all the way up close to the elbows. She was obviously surprised, and he walked out without an explanation in a rude manner. Maybe he had a bad day, who knows, but I don't think it's fair to criticized and give a negative review to Chizuko over something that's quite frankly, ridiculous. Great customer service. I went down here because it was the closest to my home, and I was pleasantly surprised. Chizuko has a very fast turn around time and the work was inexpensive: $2 to fix a seam, and $9 to hem some pants. Quality work and a great price. I wish I had known around this place earlier! read more

I'm so happy to have found a great, local tailor! I came in for a hem on my skirt on New Year's eve, requiring it two days thereafter. She was friendly walking in, and patient to hearing what I wanted. I appreciated her taking the time to ask me questions to make sure she understood me. She was honest, told me that it was a simple enough cut and so she would reduce the price. Within a couple of hours I received a call from her that it was ready. When I came to pick up the skirt she said she had trouble with the material, and had me inspect it as well as try it on. It was perfect! Looked and felt great. Have had several pants, shirts and shorts altered at Toyo's. I told her no rush, a week or 10 day turn around was fine. She texted 2 days later saying the work was done. Prices are great. Haven't had such excellent alterations since my mom hung up her sewing machine. As for Noshi U's irate rant. I was there when that event transpired. I've been using Toyo for a few years and she's never let me down. I use her to hem pants to fit my stubby legs, as well as patch up all the clothes I tear apart at work. The articles I typically take to her are thick, tough work clothes. She's up to the challenge. I go here regularly to get alterations on anything. Most of the time it's pants, but she has also helped me alter suits, button ups, and even basketball jerseys that are too long. I appreciate that she is able to tailor yet still make it look like the original product by making sure things like stitching, cuff length, and other details match. She even presses the clothing to make it look the way it should. She charges a fair price considering the quality of work. I don't get that worried feeling that the clothes I just bought could be ruined because the alteration is so obvious/unnatural. I regret getting alterations done at dry cleaners too many times before. I'm very happy I found her as a tailor. She's a kind person and understands her craft. read more

Hidden in the streets of Old Town San Pedro is Toyo's Tailoring- run by a master of her craft, is Chizuko, one of the sweetest and most sincere people, who makes you feel welcome with just a smile. I've brought one vintage dress here to be let out in the waist. It was an unusual cut with not much extra fabric so I wasn't expecting perfection. With two visits, body tape and eventually just sewing in my own snap, I was able to wear the dress to the occasion I had planned. I won't be wearing it again though as her alterations left the fit very strange. Also I was told I would be called when it was finished and over a month later I finally called myself and was told two more days. I will most likely be continuing my search for a tailor. I lived in the SF Bay Area for about 10 years and never did find a good alterations person. When I moved to LA, my sister recommended Chizuko. I have now been going to Chizuko myself for 2 years. I was on the search for a good tailor a few months back to make alterations on my wedding dress. I found Toyo's Alterations (Chizuko) through a search on yelp and decided to give her a try and I am so happy that I did!!! Not only was her customer service great but her skills/work are outstanding. I got my dress for a really great deal but when it came it was about 2 sizes too big. Chizuko had to remove some boning in the bodice of the dress that due to the large size looked way too bulky, the took in the dress to fit my body and adjust the strap length as well. When I came in for my final fitting, both Chizuko and I were amazed at how beautiful the dress looked on me. You wouldn't even think it was the same dress that I first brought in 2 month before. Yes, 2 months because I did not want to be one of those last minute brides scrambling in a panic to get my dress altered and Chizuko was able to take her time with it. I also took my Maid of Honor (Sister) to have her dress altered and a friend to have some sleeves on a dress altered as well. Both were completely satisfied with her work and I will definitely be recommending Toyo's Alterations to all my family and friends! read more

Chizuko does amazing work. From tailoring pants to make them fit a more slender frame, shortening vintage Pendleton flannels that were too long (and making them look so perfect that you would swear they came from factory like that) all the way to your straight forward hems. She's performed miracles on numerous articles of expensive clothing that I thought for sure were done. Specifically a wool pea coat that I still marvel at how she repaired a sleeve that I thought was unrepairable. Her pricing is not expensive, but she's not giving away the work either. And she shouldn't be. She is an incredible tailor, with a skill I have yet to see bested. You can trust her with your day to day clothing, but don't be shy about bringing in your higher end items. If you spend any amount of time in her shop don't be surprised to see numerous luxury brand coats, shirts, pants and dresses. She is honest about what can (and can not) be done to an item, gives you a price ahead of time, and completes the job in a timely manner. She's also exceedingly friendly. I have no idea what more you could possibly want from a tailor. I'd give her a 6th star if I could. read more

I purchased my "mother of the groom" dress several months before the wedding. During those months I had lost a little weight and was horrified to see that the dress didn't look right when I tried it on again just before the wedding. Chizuko assessed the problem & was able to complete the job in a week's time. Even though the fabric was difficult to work with she came up with a wonderful solution at a more than reasonable price! I am thrilled with the fit and the quality of her work! Note: The day I dropped off my dress was the first time I had ever been at Toyo's & met Chizuko. A few days later I realized that I didn't receive a claim check like you would get at a dry cleaners. No problem!
