You want it to be a great experience from the first cut - it sets the tone, and Javier did just that. Absolute fair pricing for the service. He took time to understand my style and spent a full hour, which included the cut, a clean shave on the back of the neck, and warm towel. He cares about the details, was really talented with using the scissors. My favorite part about this cut was that he used a straight blade to cut in my part, and I love that look. You can tell from being in the shop, it is truly a family and these guys have a lot of fun. They sell their own products for hair and beard inside. The shop has crazy cool art work, and a couple of TVs to watch while you are getting cut. Just an overall solid experience, and I'll definitely be back.

So I let my hair grow out for a week from the close cut I normally have, and for the $50 I spent, had to ask this youn lady to actually do my hairline sharp like some of the pictures I've seen of her other clients. Clearly skill is there, but I must not have paid enough for a clean line up also. Plus I asked for it to be cut low only for her to say she's actually not gonna cut it quite as low as I had asked. OK I think to myself, starting to get annoyed. At the end I wasn't satisfied with my hairline sharpness but still tipped 20. After a couple days I was annoyed enough that I had to get a new pack of flat razors and do it myself, only 3 minutes in the mirror and I have a nice 90 degree angle hairline instead of this slightly rounded deal that she hooked me up with. I'm sure some gentlemen will find better luck but you would think that for top dollar you'd get treated a little better. Not to mention she rushed me out at the end, not rudely but rather briskly. Like, you can go now. I got my hair cut up on Ogontz Avenue for years for $15 dollars and never once got such a dull shape up, from neither Ms. Donna or the brothers over at Illusions. You could roll the dice on the Art Lair but I would recommend seeing a real OG if you go with a low cut and want a good taper fade or anything like that, this place does seem on point with braids and stuff though and is a clean barbershop with a good ambiance. While she isn't quite fluent in English, she can communicate well enough and will cut your hair however you'd like. The difference between this place and other salons/barbershops is the attention to detail and time that she spends on each customer's haircut. Even with multiple customers waiting, she does not sacrifice on quality or rush through any customers like some other places I've been. I can honestly say that every time I go, I am happy with the amount of detail and time she spends on my haircut (I have a thick head of hair). Washing hair is $2 extra. Tip is not expected but appreciated. The waiting area is not big, 2 couches and a few chairs. There's a TV with antenna stations and Xfinity WiFi nearby.

I also wasn't looking in a mirror. That is until my wife started making fun of me. She was showing me photos of Jim Carey in Dumb and dumber. So I went in thhe bathroom and took a look. Goddamn I had straight bangs! I thought to myself I think I'll pay a little more next time. So a month or two passed and I still didn't know where to go. I've never found a spot that feels like home. So I was Perusing Yelp to see what was around that took walk ins. When I looked up Gents I saw it was a 17 minute walk and near Steap & Grind. Two pluses for me. Get there early grab a coffee and wait. I got there at 10:02 and they were already cutting. So I sat and waited. Conversation flowed easily between myself, the barbers and receptionist. I was having a pretty good time waiting. I think it helps to have women on staff so the conversational topics veer from misogyny and sports. Example: My old lady is such a nag I can't watch the game. I can't relate to either of these things. My wife isn't a nag and I do not watch sports. A lady that was there made several appointments online for her family but the online system fucked it all up. So the owner made sure they got their cuts at the time they meant to book which looked like great service to me. I ended up sitting down with Kim. I had some ideas on how to cover my bald spot. So I bounced them off her and she helped me select the best one. I was very happy witH how it turned out. She did not lead me astray. I will book an appointment with her again. They also had super cheap hair products for sale. Which is surprising since shit is normally super expensive. However, he cut the top too short and now I look a little silly (see photo attached). Right off the bat, the employee was distracting the person cutting my hair (the owner) by showing him instagram reels, scrolling on social media and answering phone calls in the shop. Right as the owner was about to start my hair, he left me in the seat and took a phone call from his girlfriend. Don't get me wrong, the owner is very nice and the vibes are good, it was just lacking on the professional end and he didn't quite give the cut I was asking for.
