The final straw came when our nanny abruptly canceled 10 minutes before her scheduled shift because my daughter had lingering congestion from the tail end of a cold. It was especially frustrating given that this same nanny had cared for my daughter the week before while she herself had cold symptoms. What was even more disappointing was that their advertised on-call service wasn't available and no one reached out to help even though they were aware the nanny canceled. For over an hour, I couldn't reach anyone who could help or offer a solution. When I finally did hear back, the response was essentially, "That's our policy," with no effort to understand the situation, find a solution, or acknowledge the impact this had on our family. For a company that advertises itself as a premium nanny service, I expected flexibility, communication, and customer care when things didn't go according to plan. Instead, I was left feeling like policies mattered more than people. For the amount this agency charges, I expected a much higher caliber of nanny and a company that stood behind its clients when problems arose. Many of the referrals I make are to request light housekeeping help and in home personal care assistance for seniors who can no longer manage those tasks on their own. I've also been to this office to attend continuing education events and update meetings on programming. As with any government agency, the process for seniors to receive services can be slow, we're talking months sometimes, maybe longer. I often follow up after making a referral if I have not received any updates on AAA'S end. Sometimes, I am notified if a rep could not reach my client, or that my email referral was received. Sometimes. Some services are income-based (Waiver programs, for example). Sometimes seniors receive the services for free, other times, they have to pay a certain amount out of pocket. This is case by case, of course. If a senior has Medicare and Medicaid with limited income/assets, there is a good chance that they would be eligible for more services. It never hurts to apply and at least see what's available for the senior(s) in your life. The SeniorLine number is 412-350-5460.

The problem was the purposeful lack of communication and withholding of information. The director and company knew their lease was up. They knew their new space wasn't finished yet (literally not built, and no occupancy permit). They knew in January it wasn't going to be ready and ended up asking for lease extensions for about 4 months. They never told parents about this tenuous situation; it was always just, "oh, we'll be moving in [insert new month]." Not a word that construction wasn't even going on at the new place because BUILDING PERMITS hadn't been issued, and that they had no other backup plan. Well, the lease extensions ran out entirely and the building owner told them they had no more extensions and had to vacate. Did they tell parents? No. They waited until there was just 2 weeks before abruptly telling parents their only Pittsburgh location was closing. Oh, but we could request to be put into one of their suburban locations, the closest of which was 30 minutes+ each way with traffic (and at least 45 minutes driving near the end of the day because of rush hour). So, at least 2 hours each day of driving to/from daycare; out and back, out and back. Even getting a straight answer from them about which suburban location they'd place my son at was a nightmare. We had no other option, because they purposefully waited so long to tell us parents what they had known for months. We did the 2 hour drive for two weeks to see if it would work, while frantically searching for other daycares with open slots. The suburban location also treated anyone from the city like a second class citizen. Suburban staff acted like the Pittsburgh kids weren't their problem, they were just taking up space; it really seemed like there had been no planning or communication about the Pittsburgh kids coming. NO PLAN for parents to sign kids in and out; wouldn't let us use the electronic sign-in/sign-out system the suburban parents got to use, wouldn't give us door codes like we had at the other location and like they had for their suburban parents (until Pittsburgh parents repeatedly complained), no bins for kids to store stuff like extra clothes (and they literally had empty bins in my son's room; I heard a Pittsburgh teacher politely ask if they could use them for our kids since they were empty, and she was VERY FIRMLY shot down, "No. You CANNOT use them." No explanation.), not enough hooks, etc. for coats/hats/mittens, and they crammed all the Pittsburgh kids into one classroom regardless of age: infants, one year olds, and older toddlers all in the same room. Napping was a nightmare. I felt so bad for the Pittsburgh teachers. All in all, I wouldn't trust this company or the Pittsburgh Director (Maggie) again. The two stars is only because we had one excellent teacher who we really liked and miss. Hilarious note: the company employee's five star post was posted AFTER they closed this location.

When we questioned Maggie about it she said, "I didn't want to bother you with it". Are you kidding me?!?!? Whether this report was unfounded or not, we - the parents - should have been notified. That's communication 101. This is just one example of her poor communication but I have an entire list. *Also... people who have been accused of child abuse work here. Parent-teacher conferences were offered early in the year and proved valuable in translating the progress our daughter has made. The staff was attentive, willing, and more than able to answer all of the questions we had prepared. They have a great team working together. Our Preschool floor has 2 teachers in our 3 year old classroom that have been with our program for the past 8 years. Our Prekindergarten program is lead by one of our strongest teachers who has been committed to our program for the past 5 years. In addition, our Prekindergarten program has a very dedicated teacher to our program who has been working with us for the past 10 years. Our Private Kindergarten Program is lead by our Teacher who has been with us for the past 10 years as well. She has committed herself to designing our curriculum, educating our teachers, and leading in program development. We are extremely fortunate to have the longevity that is present at ABC's For Children. To watch your children and family grow over the years as we care for the children in our classrooms is an amazing privilege that these teachers do not take lightly. But when I'm feeling scammed like PA makes me feel as a transplant who has lived in five other states, I do my homework. Jack Maggs was a bit lower than the one that claims to price match (but was closer so -- mileage saved). They were a ten spot or so lower than AAA if you pay in cash, and significantly less than the place right near Bridgeville Licensing. At $222 for a new title, registration and plate, the amount still caught me off guard but I was more comfortable knowing they were less greedy than some of there others -- and super fast and thorough with great customer service to boot, Bottom line: Stick with the one that balances great service with a competitive price. Oh, and write your dang legislators so they take the private middle people out of government required services so you aren't gouged so deeply and in such a regressive manner. Other states charge by the value of your car... which is progressive. Get on board with what's fair! [the rant continues] Also emissions -- many states have seen the impact of these wane, and again, this cost is regressive and, when it costs twice as much here as Philly, wtf is going on. Calling around I got a range of $38 to $107 so far, and no one bats an eye -- but you should. For a "cheap" city per internet research, the costs are mighty high compared to "expensive" states like WA that even the score with salaries that are higher and state income tax that is non-existent.
