Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh (HARP) has three campuses, and this location is on the North Side. This campus has a veterinary center as well as a shelter for admissions and adoptions. The parking lot outside is free. In previous years, I took four of my cats to the veterinarians here. The veterinarians spoke very politely and thoroughly to me, and they performed accurate medical examinations and treatments for my cats. Please note that the veterinarians focus mostly on preventative care, such as wellness exams, vaccinations, non-emergency illnesses and injuries, etcetera. During my previous visits, the prices for services were very reasonable. During my most recent visit, I looked at the cats and dogs who were available for adoption. All of the employees promptly and kindly helped me to learn about the pets' personalities and health issues. They gave me a form to fill out, and then they arranged for me to meet a dog in a meeting room. I thought that the animals' cages were clean. Adoption fees were reasonable and varied based on the type and age of animal. This shelter also offers training classes for dogs. The classes are available in beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, and the trainers use positive reinforcement. read more

I have been going to this animal rescue for years. However, my most recent experience was god awful. My cat had a uti and I was instructed by the ER vet to follow up with my vet. When I made an appointment online, it was cancelled and they told me to go to the ER vet. I tried to explain that the ER vet told me to follow up with them and for some reason they just couldn't comprehend that..? On top of that, they tell you to call them if you have any questions, but they never answer the phone. I called 10 times in the span of two hours and left voicemails. I even called different departments and was told someone was there to answer, to which no one did. At the point it just felt like they were playing with me. I do NOT recommend this clinic to anyone who actually cares about their pet. Because they clearly do not care about your animal. I will never be back. read more

This review is for the Veterinary clinic only. I took my 2 wiener dogs for there annual checkup and to get there heart worm medication. The staff where all super nice and friendly. They checked out both of my dogs completely and also took blood work. The doctor was very nice and great with my wiener dogs. I had a 10am appointment and I was taken at exactly 10am. The nurse did a basic check on both my dogs and then the doctor came in. I was in and out in a very short time and left with a years worth of heart worm pills for both dogs. The vet is great and the prices even better. Prices are much better than a regular vets office. I would highly recommend The Humane Animal Rescue vet clinic for all your general dog needs. I cannot believe I have to return a dog that was not ready to be adopted. I thought this pup was our newest family member, and my family was excited to welcome him into our home. Now we have to make the difficult decision to take him back. My 2 dogs died of old age after being with me for 14 years. I knew I was ready to welcome a new dog into my home, so I got to meet one boy I thought was perfect. I asked a lot of questions before deciding to adopt, and I was excited to take him home. Unfortunately, he was no where near ready for adoption. At the shelter, I saw he wasn't good on leash, but it was worse than just needing to learn how to walk nicely; he violently pulled and shook so hard it injured me. Even with a harness, he would grab the leash and aggressively pull. He had been a stray, and he apparently hated being on a leash. Nothing was disclosed about his severe separation anxiety, but I quickly learned about that when I went to the bathroom and he destroyed my living room. As soon as I closed the door, I began to hear noises from the other room. I hurried back as fast as was possible and discovered stuff everywhere! His excessive jumping and mouthing was also very problematic. Despite all of my efforts to use positive training to reward good behaviour, nothing helped. Turning my back just made him more aggressive in getting my attention. Trying to redirect him to a tug toy didn't deter him from chewing on my arm. This boy should have had some training to improve his problematic behaviour before he was made available for adoption. This shelter failed to help this pup prepare for a home, and it ultimately frustrated a good adopting family. For $200, I only got frustration and heartache. Worse, the poor dog had the unnecessary stress of being moved again. read more

I am a big fan of the WPHS based on the stories I've heard and the work I've seen them do over the years. This is a nonprofit that definitely constantly works as hard as it can to keep its operations going as smoothly as possible. It takes care of the hundreds of animals that come into the shelter monthly, partners with companies such as PetCo to make sure as many animals as possible find the best homes, and works at dozens of off-site and educational events a month. You will definitely never find a more dedicated staff at another shelter - the staff members will even work overtime and give up their vacations if the shelter is in a pinch. The volunteers are also all amazing people, whether they work with animals in the shelter or in the community at off-site events or in therapy programs. And considering how stressful working at an animal shelter must be, I applaud the people working here who are just trying to find a home for every animal that can be saved. Open door shelters like the humane society may get a bad rap, but believe me, the humane society is just as amazing a place as local no-kill shelters, and it does just as much (if not more) work on a quarter of the budget. Lots of my friends own rescued pets that they found here, and those adoptions would never have been possible without this shelter's hard work. Two thumbs up, guys. Keep up the good work. read more

After the passing of my 12 year old beagle, I was ready for a new dog. Matt and I poured over countless rescue sites, looking for a dog that would fit our wants. We found it at Humane Animal Rescue. Brody was a timid shy boy. When we first met him, he wanted nothing to do with Matt, he only had eyes for me. But we brought him home and he's been so pleasant every since. He's a 10 month old lab mix, and so well behaved. The volunteers at the shelter seemed sad to see him go, they all said he was such a good boy. We have used the clinic here, too, and everyone of the techs are super nice. The girl at the front counter could use some smiles and sugar in her life, but that's not going to deter me from coming back. read more

My friend worked here as a caretaker. They had a dog named Dixie who had been returned once because she didn't get along with another dog at the first adoptee and the 2nd adoptee returned her because she had to move out of the country. They have a "committee" that votes on whether to euthanize and, though divided, voted to euthanize Dixie. They don't involve the employee and volunteer caretakers on the voting or even ask them for their experiences with the pets before making their decisions. Dixie would have been great in a home without other pets. My friend reached out to a local Foster program to avoid having Dixie killed. Humane Animal Rescue Pittsburgh fired my friend for it. The Foster people still tried to rescue Dixie, but they were denied because it would make Humane Animal Rescue look bad to give her to another shelter. Another person aware of the situation tried to adopt Dixie directly, but also was denied and told decisions to euthanize were final. They move to kill prematurely and fire employees that try to intervene. They don't even talk to the day to day caretakers before killing. Take your pets that you can't care for to Animal Friends instead. Send your donations to Animal Friends instead. Volunteer at Animal Friends instead! This inhumane shelter needs to be shut down. read more

In April of 2013 I lost my beloved Smokey at the age of 8. The very next morning I went to WPHS and fell in love with two of the sweetest kittens on this planet, Gizzie and Tater [formerly Gray]. The shelter was pretty off about Gizzie's personality, though. They informed me that he was very quiet, calm, nervous and reserved. Oh if only they could see him now! Perhaps he came from a bad situation? I don't think I've ever met a louder or more talkative animal in my life and he ALWAYS wants to run around and play. When I sat with Tater in the little meet and greet room he hissed at everyone who walked by. I rarely had company over so I didn't see this as an issue if he didn't like any other humans. After about 2 months he couldn't wait to greet and love up on everyone who walks through the door! He even tolerates my neighbors 3 toddlers who constantly want to hold and pet him. Adopted my best friend from here about a year and a half ago! He initially had a yeast infection in his ear that they didn't catch. I called a few days later to let them know. They had me bring him to their clinic to be treated at no charge. Couldn't be happier with my dog or with the employees here! If I could give 0 stars I would. I found a stray kitten (not neutered or vaccinated) and surrendered him to this shelter, thinking he'd be cared for. I had a change of heart and called to see their plans for him to find out they had listed him as 4 years old in their system and they were planning on neutering and vaccinating him and "returning him to the field". He was NOT a feral cat. He was possibly the sweetest and cuddliest cat I've ever met and would have been adopted instantly, which is what I thought the plan for him would be. I asked them if they could put a note down to call me before releasing him and that I would come get him myself, considering they didn't even know where to drop him off at (my apartment complex is HUGE with over 30 buildings and we are the whole way in the back). Not even TWO WEEKS later, which means this baby was NOT healed from surgery and NOT active on his vaccines, I get a voicemail saying not that they were planning to let him go, but that they already had. I have no idea where they left him and I've been searching for him for a month with no luck. If you work here- SHAME on you. There is NO compassion for animals at this place and it is just a factory trying to push out animals. I've never been so dissatisfied or disgusted with a business before. I will never understand how they can let an animal go knowing it is not protected by any vaccines. If you find an animal or honestly need any animal help do not go here, this place deserves to be shut down forever. Do not recommend the vet clinic. When we first started going a few years ago after adopting my dog, it was good and affordable. They offered him treats to get him to calm down and not jump/mouth. In the last year or so, the service has significantly worsened. It is impossible to get anyone on the phone and the staff do not communicate with each other, meaning every time I called someone told me different things or did not know what i was talking about, or scheduled incorrect appointments. They also blamed me for their inability to answer the phone, send expected emails, or provide correct information. I was even told there were no partial sedation options we could try for my dog, but the last two years we did just that, and tried two different methods that did not work. There were several "blanket policies" that apparently just manifested in the last couple weeks. During Covid, My dog went in alone and sedated and I picked him up scared and covered in poop, with his harness on incorrectly. My dog also has behavior issues which he had when I adopted him from this same shelter. Then they wanted to say they can't service him anymore, because of said behavior issues. They required he be sedated, but then said BECAUSE he needs sedated he can not be seen there even though he was sedated for his last two exams. Because their "blanket policy is that they prefer not to" they don't want to treat him. If you require he be sedated, why is he now suddenly against your policy? My dog was mistreated by the staff here, and then blamed for being overwhelmed even more after having a bad experience. I have no idea what happened to him when they wouldn't allow me with him (which is an idiotic thing to do with any dog, let alone one with behavior issues). Whatever happened permanently changed his behavior there. The staff no longer spends time talking to you or knowing your dog. This entire time, no one even tried to have a conversation about what his behavior looks like outside the vet (hint- he only acts like that with them. wonder why!). They also blamed us for not attending an appointment they scheduled without asking me, and didn't answer when I called to say I could not attend said appointment and left a voicemail. If you have a dog with any behavior issues, even if adopted from here, I would not recommend this clinic. They are unprofessional, incompetent, impossible to reach, and judgemental. I don't know what happened to the staff here but it has changed and is no longer a good experience. The vet is already stressful but they make it an ordeal. If you need low-cost care, please go elsewhere. read more

I went to the north side location so my dog could get fixed. I feel they could have been a little more professional. I arrived at 730am as instructed yet no one was there and the doors were locked. Apparently you are to walk to another door to be buzzed in. After being buzzed in there was still no one to greet you. I was just standing there in an empty lobby. It got to the point where the poor fur baby had to be put down. Most inhumane experience ever. No one knew what was going on or cared. Makes me never want another pet. Dusty, our shadowy and lovable Russian Blue, was getting lonely. Considering that cats are social animals and that he was very attached to his sister whom was adopted by someone else, we decided to find Dusty a brother. Now we have Kody, a white, long-haired Norwegian Forest Cat, and the two of them get along brilliantly. Kody had all of his shots, a full check-up, and was ready to come home with us upon first sight. It bears repeating that the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society is a NO-KILL SHELTER that rejects no stray pet that is taken to either of its facilities (another is located in Elizabeth,PA) and makes every effort to rehabilitate them if necessary and find them a loving home. The WPHS also offers obedience training for dogs and veterinary services. Even if you don't plan to have any more pets at the present time, I urge you to make a small donation to the WPHS. The more cats and dogs that are spayed, neutered, and adopted, the fewer stray animals there will be. read more

This is a review for the vet clinic. The adoption clinic is amazing! But I swear it's like night and day. My dog went in for a check up on her ear, and a vet came by and began to pull her aggressively on the muzzle that my dog had on. My dog didn't even growl or bark, she just moved around because she was scared. The vet pulled so aggressively and yelled at her to the point where my dog's front paws were lifted from the ground (by the way, my dog has THREE LEGS, and the back one is missing). It got so bad where my dog backed into a corner scared! Absolutely terrible and aggressive service! Especially to my dog who is truly just a sweetheart. Its a shame the vet turned abusive. I would adopt here, and never take the pets to the clinic! read more

Don't bring your pet here. I brought my cat in to be spayed and long story short they found out she was a neutered male with an owner. I will say the staff was compassionate and offered to waive the adoption fee if I chose to adopt again which I did a few days later. The staff I dealt with during the adoption was great. However, they told me I could get a refund for the spay that my original cat was supposed to get. I got into contact with who was supposed to give me my refund and they denied it. Meaning, they took my money and my cat and gave no compassion in email response to the voicemail I left, and didnt even respond to my reply to their email. Not to mention, I found fleas on my newly adopted cat. Then, she wasnt eating and was feeling sick and I called and recived a voicemail back telling me to bring her in, which I do. But then, I'm told they cant take walk ins and am turned away and they "didnt know" who told me that. At no point was staff intentionally mean, but they are clearly clueless as to what they are doing and do not communicate. Overall, dont come here because if you have to choose between your money or your pet, you wont get either. read more

We would stop at Western PA Humane Society after every afternoon football game. I think we purposely parked in that general vicinity, for the excuse to stop in. We found our beloved beast, originally called Sydney, 7 years ago after one of those games. It took one look and she had us. She was a beautiful Shepherd-Husky, we renamed her Gertrude and she proved to be the best companion ever. She got along famously with our 2 cats, also rescues and she became the talk of the neighborhood with her escapades. She changed our lives. We still continue to stop after every game and will one day find a companion as sweet and loving as Gert. Sadly we lost her to Lymphoma Cancer... but she gave us 7 special years. I encourage anyone considering a pet to rescue. They will be forever grateful but so will you. It doesn t take much to fall in love with them. read more

I found my new furry best friend :) Jack, formerly known as Buddy, and I met last Saturday at the Pet Expo. I saw a picture of him online and the BF and I wanted to check him out. After speaking with WPHS, they informed us he would be at the Expo, so the BF and I drove down to check things out. As my luck would have it, when we arrived, "Buddy" was on hold for another family. Disappointed, we decided to explore the Expo then go to the Humane Society to see other furry friends who were in need of homes. First impressions - What a LOVELY facility!! I've volunteered in shelters and worked with pets for years now... most facilities smell like, well, pee or poo. Not this one. It was well lit. It was bright and friendly. It made you want to explore! When we walked in, we asked where we could check out dogs for adoption. The lovely girl at the front desk pointed us in the direction. Once we opened the door, the "greeter" aka "doggie in front of the door" began to bark. We said hello and explored all of the kennels for our potential new friend. As fate would have it, one of the volunteers found us and said Buddy had returned from the Expo and was released from his hold. He was able to be adopted. Shortly after, Buddy came home with us and became Jack. The staff at WPHS were just wonderful. They don't want the pets to go to just anyone... the want the pets to go to the right homes. They truly care about the animals that enter their shelter. You can see it in the facility, in the staff, in the cats, dogs, rabbits... everyone and everything shows that the Western PA Humane Society is a quality institution. I will forever be grateful to them for my furry boy, Jack. If you are able to volunteer, donate, or fund-raise for this no kill shelter, I suggest you do. We adopted both our dogs from the Humane society. The dogs where great. So when we lost Hobo we went back but know they are Humane Animal Rescue I put the dog on hold so my husband could meet her at that time I was told she would be 155 to adopt witch was a big jump from the 75 for Hobo. The next day when we went down to get her I was told because you adopted here you can pick a leash and collar,it ended up they charged me 30 for them and 85 for a class that we said no to because if she needed it we would take her close to where we live. I said something and also called about it because they ended up takeing 257. Very disappointment, they should have stayed the way they were. read more

If you plan on bringing FERAL cats to be neutered/spade at this clinic, please understand that if they are really FERAL cats, and they may have fleas or missing a tooth, these folks will KILL the cat without missing lunch. They have recently added a clause to their admission sign in that gives them JUDGE, JURY AND EXECUTIONER (and I emphasize EXECUTIONER) as to whether the FERAL cat lives or dies. So far, since this new clause was added, they are 2 for 2 in KILLING the feral cat I brought in to be fixed. The first time they said it was bad teeth, this time they said it had fleas and bad teeth. Really, I don't know too many FERAL cats with great teeth or that don't have fleas, if they are really FERAL CATS... so, I guess FERAL cat standards have increased or they are busy enough with normal VET work. The two cats that were KILLED by these morons were no different that the dozen or so I've brought in over the past year (prior to the new clause being added). Obviously, I will not be bringing in any more FERALS to this slaughterhouse. read more

I adopted a kitten a week ago and most of the employees were wonderful. I had to wait for 2 hrs. With my 23month old for our kitten to be ready( she had surgery) one of the employees asked me if there was anyway to keep my baby quiet... because he was distracting. Mind you he was amazingly behaved this day, he played with his cars and walked from room to room seeing the animals and never cried once. I was a little offended. It might be something to think about.. who adopts animals? Families! Maybe next time be kinder to people who are waiting patiently to adopt an animal. We love are kitten though read more

Very disappointed with the Humane Society on the North Side. I always loved the Humane Society and would go here just to view the animals and look at the store when they use to have it. We got our precious girl Onyx there which I'm thankful for! Onyx was having some issues where she would not use her back legs to walk so we wanted to take her back to get her checked out at the humane society, where we got her. In the paperwork it states if anything is wrong to bring the animal back as long as it's within a week and they will help take care of whatever the issue is....is was exactly a week since we got her and we took her down to the humane society and found they were closed due to a Kenny Chesney concert and were using their lot for fans to park at for a price. We called them and told them our ordeal the next day and got a crappy reply from them. It is not the Humane Society's fault she had Lyme disease, it's not contagious from other dogs and when they did their checkup on her when she came there it didn't show she had it. I'm very upset with how the situation was handled...Thank goodness for Banfield because they helped our Onyx and now she is doing great! read more

The staff needs training on prospective adoptee management. I arrived, filled out an application, and then waited. I waited for 45 minutes watching people come and go. I inquired on the wait, I was told these people were bringing their families and pets to meet and I needed to wait. I continued to wait. I saw two groups who had entered and gone through the same process that I went through. Again, I inquired when I would be seen. The staff was confused, had no wait list to call upon, and no idea what I was even waiting for. And now, all the dogs have been spoken for and other people who obviously came in and applied after me, were currently in adoption. There were no puppies left. I wasted my entire Sunday afternoon here, and the staff had not communicated appropriately amongst each other as to the fact that I was in line and waiting. This is very frustrating. I did not receive any apology, only confused stares. Please improve your staff procedures. read more

I took my cat here last December to get it vaccinated & neutered because they have a low-cost neuter/spray program which greatly reduced my expenses. Unfortunately, the day I went to pick up my cat post-surgery, the clinic informed me they had given my cat to the wrong owner. They were very unprofessional about handling the situation and I had to wait around as they contacted the other owner to inform him that he had the wrong cat and to return him. I overheard the nurses and receptionist laughing over the mistake they had made in giving my cat to the wrong person. It was infuriating that they were not apologetic at all for misplacing my cat and for wasting my time. I expect an animal clinic, especially whose mission statement is "To provide and advocate compassionate care for all animals and to enhance the human experience of pet ownership," to have a better system of caring for and identifying the pets that come their way. My cat also ended up contracting an upper respiratory infection over the same weekend and I had to take him up at the emergency room of an animal hospital because he was sneezing blood. Western PA Humane Society doesn't take emergency appointments, so I rushed him to Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center. The vet that saw my sick cat informed me that he had probably caught the infection while he was at Western PA Humane Society since my cat had no previous exposure to other animals. The total cost of this whole ordeal (antibiotics included) ended up costing me a lot more than what I had saved going to Western PA Humane Society instead of going to a veterinary. This all happened during the holiday season, and because my cat was sick, the airlines and animal hospitals would not take him for fear of infecting other pets. I ended up hiring a private party to take care of my cat while I was gone, costing even more than what I had originally expected. I understand that Western PA Humane Society is a clinic that is probably under-staffed and under financed, but a little more effort in sanitary conditions & professional responsibility would go a long way. I'm just highly disappointed in the way the clinic handled things with my cat and will not be going there again. read more

I had the most horrible experience at this facility, first of all after looking at available dogs on the internet I found one that I loved. We drove down to the facility in Northside to find out that somebody placed a hold on this dog which was never stated on the website at all. We offered the full amount of money there but $20.00can hold a dog for 24 hours. They told us to come back around 5:00 pm to see if the person shows up. We are driving all the way from Murrysville let me add also not to mention they never answer their phone. Well we come back it is 4:45 and the person who put down a measly $20.00 for the hold showed up and adopted the dog. Our whole day was wasted and I don't think holds on animals should be allowed. For the most part, the staff here is very friendly. The kennels are pretty packed, but that's because they are trying to save as many dogs as possible. They keep it very clean for how many dogs they hold. They sell Lupine brand collars and leashes at a great price, which is a nice touch. They also have great prices on gentle leaders and easy walk harnesses. It's nice to see that they are not trying to gouge the public on these accessories. i got my dog, powder, at WPHS. they kept her here for MONTHS before i adopted her. the staff was really friendly and helpful, and powder still loves women more than anything after her several-month stay there. after i adopted her, i took her there for follow-up wellness visits with the veterinary staff, who were knowledgeable, nice...and remembered powder! read more

WPHS does a great job of meeting the community's animal needs, both incoming & outgoing. Their volunteers genuinely seem to enjoy the animals and are helpful, unlike their neighbors to the north. The shelter takes in strays and surrenders, and accepts transfers from other areas, so there is usually a variety of dog breeds. We've adopted from them and they take the process seriously, but it's not excessive. Highly recommend them! read more

Thank you AGAIN Humane Society for giving us another wonderful cat in Kody, a friend for Dusty (our other cat) and our ferret Dokken (I'm 28 and like hair metal, deal with it). He had all his shots and checkups and everything and was good to go. The Human Society is a worthy cause that helps reduce the amount of strays out there, so even if you don't want a pet, it's a good idea to donate to them. read more

I've never experienced a vet that was so friendly, helpful and able to fit us in. They do a great job, offer good suggestions for care, and were available to field my (many) questions when we adopted our stray cat. Did an excellent job with spaying her as well. The waiting room is always clean and usually full of happy customers. I'll be driving up here for a long time to come with our little furry beast, she has gotten such great care there. Prices are also VERY reasonable, especially if you become a member. read more

We took our puppy to get neutered a few months ago. They did such a wonderful job. They only charge you for what you need. This was way less compared to any other vet in the area. A friend's dog was neutered only a few days before ours at another location. The stitches were sticking out and the dog seemed uncomfortable. We could hardly see the stitches on our dog and he was only bothered for about a day or so. read more
