    Goodwill

Ratty with a capital "R", at least on my stop! I like Goodwill but do find the stores vary widely…read morefrom place to place. This store was fairly well organized but with such a rag tag bunch of merchandise, their staff doesn't have much to work with. Both men's and women's clothing were especially dated and/or damaged somewhat (pilling, gummy from too much fabric softener, stretched out of shape). I found the overall quality here was much lower than most of the Goodwill stores I frequent in Missouri & Oklahoma, which surprised me quite a bit, especially since Emporia is a college town.

The clothing price is substantially less than the locations in Oklahoma. This location the day I stopped didn't have much on the high end of quality but was very well organized and clean overall. It does not have a public restroom ( since I was traveling this would have been a plus ) I spent about $25 in 15 minutes of looking and was very pleased with my finds. I would definitely stop here again if my travels take me within 20-30 minutes drive from here. The staff was friendly and made sure a breakable item was bagged safe for travel. one note for staff, there were not very many size markers on the racks even though the clothing was properly divid... dividers at the beginning of every rack and again when they change is helpful. And I stopped at Do-B's to eat too! 1 block away ... dont miss it!!

Tallgrass Antiques is well curated, which most people will appreciate. Me? I love nothing more than…read morepawing through a dusty box of knickknacks to find a treasure. You'll find lots of treasure here, but without the junk and dusty boxes. The building itself is a pleasure to walk around. It's old and the staircase is pretty, and the floors are wooden and creak nicely in certain spots as you walk around. It's very satisfying to look at old things while being in an old thing. I saw a variety of antique and vintage things that I wanted to buy. My favorites were a German Cabbage Patch doll wearing lederhosen, a lighted champagne sign, folk art, and lots and lots of Pyrex dishes. This place also has a good amount of salvage goods, like doors, windows, knobs, and other things that might look good repurposed in a home.

Typically small town antique stores are much smaller than this one and usually tend to be junkier - more along the lines of a flea market or overgrown garage sale. Tallgrass is stocked with true antiques, lots of primitives and architectural salvage. If a farmstead closed in the past 50 years in Kansas, some of the remains are probably being sold out of this retail location. As a license plate collector, I was pleased to pick up a 1955 Chase County truck plate. Tons of signs, lettering, tools and mantiques of all varieties. A must stop for any collector driving 50 highway and even worth the 20 mile journey from I-35. Pricing was more than fair is comparing to big city pricing, especially for the large variety of unique items they have.
