This family-owned store is almost an emporium for a farming family: I found canning supplies,…read morebreeding supplies, seeds and starter kits; specialty dog food, wild animal traps, and wellies in all sizes. Mark's sold us an aluminum plant, which is a terrarium plant, and which produced substances which are toxic in aquariums. When I called the store as I was concerned about its appearance (weird silver mold things), the store expert once again asserted that it couldn't be the problem. Mark's also sold us an Amazon Sword plant which should have been ideal, but neglected to mention that it needs significant access to light. It rotted, too. When we cleaned out the filter and changed a portion of the water, the gunk that came out was nauseating. Stephen, the betta we purchased, was pale and had cloudy eye -- both signs of infection. Had we been able to examine him further, we may have noticed, but it was only evident once we got him home and under the aquarium lifhts. We did all we could to save him (20% water change, removed rotting plants, treatment with antibiotics) and he was dead within a week and a half. Obviously, pets die, and some more quickly than most. My son just had to bury his first pet, who he loved, and I truly believe this was exacerbated by the advice given by the man who was consulted as the expert.
