I've always wanted to visit Hunter Cattle Co, but just never had the time or found another excuse…read morenot to make the 40 minute drive from Savannah. This particular day I was glad that I did. I went out there unsure of what I was going to see, but I did have a preconceived idea that it would be some big store on a farm. My idea was the furthest thing from the truth. To be quite honest, I thought my GPS was wrong, because all that we saw was some older run down buildings and a bunch of random cars parked nearby. Let me tell you how glad I am that we proceeded and walked inside. Now when I say that MooMa's (the actual store) is small, it truly is. They have a great selection of local food items like honey, jams, pasta noodles, milk, etc. The one thing that threw me though was the two smaller "ice cream freezers" that had frozen beef and pork. I prefer fresh meat over frozen any day, but I was willing to give it a shot. I loaded up on burgers, brats, and Italian sausage, but I did ask about fresh meat. They told me that they dry age all their beef, so if you let them know ahead of time before you go, they will cut it and have it ready for you when you arrive. Talk about customer service! That right there made this a five star establishment. I'll say this too, we cooked the frozen burgers and they were amazing. Not one of us could tell that they were frozen, which again backs my five stars. I'm not quite sure who the gentleman that came out of the office was, or the lady that he was with, but those two and the older gal working the store were the best. I'll drive here any day to buy my meat before going to a chain grocery store. Thank you Hunter Cattle!

Out of six or seven available varieties, we chose the Farmhouse Garlic - partially on the recommendation of the very helpful Hunter representative, but mostly cos both I and Mrs I love garlic :) The jerky is absolutely fantastic. It's tender, comes across as moist even though it has obviously been dried, and the garlic is such a fresh note that you really get to appreciate the heat that garlic can possess. I don't want to call it spicy - it's not like a jalapeño or anything like that - but it's a crisp, fresh heat like you get from a good peppercorn. I highly recommend it, and I'll be sure to give their other products a whirl as well.

I thought it sounded good until they kept sneaking in random charges and trying to talk me into a plan with interest when I qualified for 12 months without. I ultimately decided to walk away cause it didn't make sense for me personally being a college student and was ASTOUNDED by what the "nice" gentleman who was helping me said when he thought I couldn't hear! He said my mother "couldn't comprehend" the terms, which in all honestly were sketchy, then when I decided to pass, made a comment about how I was "a waste of three hours" among other things (overall I had only taken maybe an hour of this mans time). All the clothes and accessories are organized and clean. Even the clearance clothes have all of the same items hung together, and then sorted by size. Clothes and constrtare not greatll, but also ok. Lots of polyester. Fabrics are thick enough to be not-see-through. Maybe not tailored, but they have changing rooms so you can try it on. Something I feel is great, is that everything had prices marked accurately. That sounds like something that would be a given, but it is not. Walmart does not post prices, and wants you to scan each thing with the app (while on store wifi and while logged in so they can spy on you), and store like Five Below just do not post a price and you are supposed to deal with it. Cato had the prices all posted, and when I check out everything was accurate. Including clearance, where they had put the new price on each tag by crossing out the old one and putting the new one on. This store is all about straight talk. Lots of deals to be had. They had cute sweater dresses and coats for winter. And a clearance rack with costume jewelry and sunglasses, and I stocked up to give to kids at birthday parties when my girls (ages 5 and 7) get invites, because putting a statement necklace or sunglasses in a gift bag with the main gift is fun for kids. They also will wrap each thing separately, like in a tissue, so nothing gets damaged. Basically, a clean organized clothes store with all the prices posted accurately and all the clothes sorted by style and size, so it is easy to shop fast and be in and out fast.

The one in my hometown (High Point, North Carolina) closed a long time ago. I remember enjoying my visits there as a kid. This Books-A-Million in Statesboro appears to be alive and well, for the most part. When Three Tree Coffee Roasters closed early, we headed here. There's a cafe inside called Joe Muggs (the Books-A-Million cafe chain). Joe Muggs has indoor and outdoor covered seating and the bookstore has free Wi-Fi. In order to connect to Books-A-Million's Wi-Fi network, you have to log in using a social media account. I logged in using my Twitter account. This is the first public network I've connected to that required a social media account for connection purposes. They must want my data. The Wi-Fi signal at the cafe was good and the speed was sufficient for general web browsing and music streaming. I didn't try to stream any videos, but I did upload some photos and those took a lot longer over Books-A-Million's Wi-Fi than my considerably faster home internet connection. We stayed at the cafe for a few hours in the afternoon. The store saw a steady, but slow, stream of business. A lot of the employees just hung out behind the registers due to a lack of customers. There were a couple books we were interested in getting for my nieces, but sadly, Amazon had them at lower prices with free (Prime) shipping. It's this very reason why I wonder how brick and mortar bookstores like Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million have survived for as long as they have. Then again, they seemed to thrive in the 90s with business models that allowed customers to spend hours inside their stores reading books and magazines and not having to pay a dime. Wanting to give Books-A-Million our business, we asked the staff if they would price match Amazon. They said they couldn't price match in-store, but we could price match with Books-A-Million online. Why would we spend our time doing that (setting up a Books-A-Million account online and going through the price matching process) when we already had Prime accounts set up through Amazon? With just a few taps on the Amazon app, we'd have the books sitting on our doorstep in a couple days. The store itself was nice. It was well maintained and organized and had an up-to-date and well-stocked inventory of books, toys, games, and gifts. The men's restroom was clean. The staff was polite. While it has some things working against it, overall, I think this Books-A-Million is a fine place to come to to browse, shop, meet, hang out, and/or get some work done. Both the bookstore and cafe have a quiet, relaxed, and comfortable atmosphere. This Books-A-Million is located in the Statesboro Crossing shopping center with other national retail and restaurant chains like Hobby Lobby, Olive Garden, Petco, TJ Maxx, and Ulta Beauty. It's not far from Statesboro Mall and the Walmart Supercenter.
