The facility looks very lovely on the outside and in. I was able to get through and sign in very quickly. Then again I showed up a half hour early for my appointment so that's part of it. The initial registration process doesn't take long at all. Get an appointment if you can. It will make your life a lot easier. Since this is a Public Health Center you will have to pay for your services but they do take most insurance plans. If you do not have insurance then you can pay on a sliding scale for your services that's based on your income. Again I would call to check prices just to make sure. The dentist and the staff were very kind and professional when I went in. Considering there were only two dentists in the entire place I was impressed with the level of care I received. Keep in mind that you will have a wait depending on what is going on with the other patients. I had to wait over a half hour once I got into the chair. Once they get to you then they will do there best to help you. I would say that People's Health Centers is a very good place to go if you need to take care of basic health concerns. If you are in need of more urgent care then Connect Care is a few blocks down the street if you don't want to battle Barnes-Jewish. Also PHC will recommend other places to go if you need it. If you don't mind the wait you'll get pretty good care that's affordable and accessible.

I found Dr. Leigh Ball's page and realized she was also a sleep specialist, which worked well for me since I was having some issues with insomnia. I am so happy with Dr. Ball. She takes time to listen, asks great questions and is understanding. She involves my partner when he comes to appointments with me but always sleeps the focus on me. She was also willing to do virtual apts. She is responsive via MyChart. Great experience with her. The office itself is in the CAM. Pretty basic, staff is nice, straight to the point. I've never had to wait more than like 30 mins tops to be seen. They can also do some blood work right there which is nice. Oh, and the views of the city from the CAM are a nice little perk.

The closest walk in is now about `10 miles south. While they will try and accommodate you if you have a need to get into see the doctor on the same day it may not happen. My primary care doctor works for this office and he is one of 6 doctors who use this office. My doctors name is Dr. Hamm and he is the nicest doctor I have ever met. I do not get the awful feeling when the door opens and in walks Dr. Hamm. He is a total gentleman and a very gentle person. Dr. Boutwell genuinely wants to get to know her patients, and even asked about my hobbies and general life, because she said she "likes to tie things together." I can say without a doubt no doctor has ever inquired about my general life ever before. She was very thorough in her questions, and offered explanations for every question I asked. She was very knowledgable and even threw out a few jokes - I have 100 bug bites currently after a recent trip, and she said "Apply this cream twice a day, and when you get to the 100th bite the first time, you'll probably be ready for round two." I don't know, I really appreciated that she seemed like a real person instead of someone just trying to get me out the door. I should also say, she spent 45 minutes talking with me. My previous doctor took about 7-10 minutes after I had waited over 35 minutes on average to see him.

I asked for confirmation and she only repeated my first name, which still did not sound correct. Upon being taken back to get my labs done she asked which arm I preferred. I wasn't sure and took about 5 seconds or less to think and she told me to "hurry up and pick one - there are people waiting to get their labs done in the waiting room". I was taken aback and so surprised by the rudeness I could only stare back and was barely able to get out "the right arm". She was wearing a mask and it was hard to understand her without seeing her face, but I could tell she never smiled with her eyes. The taking of the labs which is usually no big deal was replaced by a very painful experience. I've never hurt that badly before when taking labs. My arm is very sore and bruised. The first letter of my last name on the vial was covered up, so when trying to confirm it was correct I had to confirm but pointed out that part of my name was covered up and unreadable. I left feeling disappointed and saddened that someone would treat a patient this way. It may seem like a small thing, but for whatever reason it made me feel bad and makes me not want to return for fear of having the same person with the same experience.
