Trade A Book is Charleston's oldest bookstore. As of 2025 Beverley has been in business for 36 years. Her first store under the same name was located in Summerville on Trolly Rd which she later sold. (That new owner has since moved the location and kept the same name though they are not affiliated.) Trade A Book is a used bookstore where readers are able to bring in their books in exchange for store credit. There is a limit of 25 books per person per day that can be brought in. (Please don't be one of those that tries to sneak more in.) You May find new books on the shelves when someone trades them in but TAB does not order stock of new releases. What books should you expect to find? A little bit of everything. - general fiction - fantasy / sci fi - Upper YA - Lower YA - Children's books (grade school as well as picture books for the little kiddos) - Historical fiction - Classics - Romance (historical, contemporary, fantasy) - Mystery/ thriller - Horror - Religious / Christian - non fiction (this space is very small and limited) - Westerns - Local authors - and much more!! At this time operating hours are Thurs-Fri 11-4P. It is best to call the store ahead of time to confirm they are open as Beverley runs the store by herself and can take leave while she assists with family care. Beverly is one of the nicest store owners and is super knowledgeable about the books on her shelves. Readers are always welcome to request temporary holds if something comes in. We brought in 25 books but only 6 or so were kept. It is key to know what the store is in need of before you go with things to trade. They have many many selection and you could spend hours perusing the plethora of books. It is a well loved establishment and there were many patrons there when we went. We will go back! I loved coming in here. There are books everywhere and the lady running the store is friendly and knows exactly where things are. No sections are marked so you'll need to ask for sure. The prices are great and the books are in good condition for being used. You can also trade books in for store credit too. read more

I recently moved to south Mt. Pleasant and when visiting Sherwin Williams I spied this used book store in their small strip mall. What a hidden gem! It was a Sunday, but the store was unlocked so I walked in and the owner was there working. She said help yourself, which I did, and we had a very pleasant conversation. This is a great place to pick up used books. If you have some books to trade, it's also a great way to pass it on. New books are expensive, but this is a nice way to get a great price and take your time reading. The library is great, but I like to keep books I particularly like. Will definitely go back. I wish I had known about this place when we moved because we donated many books with our downsizing. read more

I popped in here on a whim because I hadn't found a good used bookstore since I moved to Mt Pleasant about a year ago (mainly because I hadn't looked). I searched online, and found this gem, very close to my house, in a small strip mall on Ben Sawyer. I took in a few books to trade, about 7 trade paperbacks I had doubles of or knew I would never read. I wasn't sure what to expect on exchange rate, so I didn't spend too much time parsing my shelves. I arrived to find the small place crammed floor to ceiling with books, but apparently very well organized. It was kind of heavenly for a bibliophile like me. At the counter, the owner, Beverly, explained the buying/trading/store credit policy. In the end, I left behind my 7 unwanted books, and I got 5 books I'm excited to read, all in very good condition and very quickly located by Beverly at my request, along with about $5 in store credit. I'd call that a win by any measure. I can't wait to return to this store, and I kind of want to live there. Maybe I'll ask Beverly next time around. read more

This is a great bookstore! Went in for the first time today to sell some books. Got a good price for them and the ones she couldn't take she said to bring back another time and she may be able to take them then. You can use the money for trade ins to get new books. My only complaint is that you can't get cash for the books. But no bother, new books are ok too. The store itself has floor to ceiling books! Isles are small and completely filled. It's cozy, but in a good way. They are remarkably organized for as many as there are and it seems as there's only 1 of each title. Very nice staff- I believe she was the owner! Hidden gem in Mount Pleasant. They buy, sell, trade used books at discounted prices. The books are organized (I say that very loosely) by genre and author. Absolutely love this place and could get lost in all the books for hours. Books teeter totter on the shelves so you have to be careful when pulling them off. It's very small and there is no sitting area but there is a coffee shop (Cooper River Coffee) right next door! Also, although books are literally all over the place, they keep a very thorough log of every book in the shop and are so helpful if you need help finding anything. read more

Love this little used book store! You can bring in up to 30 books at one time for owner to go through and see if she can accept any of them. Every time I have been there she usually has been able to take about half of mine. Depending on what is needed at that time and she tells me to bring them back next time because she may need them next time. You get credit for the books that she accepts. Then go shopping in her wonderful little used book store packed full of every book you can think of. They even have a children's corner of books and a teen section. When you are finished shopping just take your selections to the counter and your credits will be deducted. If you still have credit it stays in the file. If you go over, you pay the difference. I left today with a stack of books and when my credit was deducted from my trade-in stack of books, I owed $4. My kind of book shopping and I am collecting a certain set of books and found four and she will call me when she finds the others. She has another store to pull from elsewhere. She helped me with another Dottie Frank Collection. She is super nice and will help you find what you are looking for. Just ask. read more

Pleasant, but you have to keep an eye peeled for it. Paperbacks and a few hardbacks piled nearly to the ceiling, in this little storefront. Take a paperback with you and trade it in. Best to have an open-mind about what you might want to read next because there are classics, romance, mysteries, local authors, etc., but no guarantee you're going to find the exact title you want. Think of it as a voyage of discovery! Beverly presides from her perch behind piles of books at the back of the store, but is more than happy to help you chase down an author or a title.
