I used to to frequent this location with my parents. The store is large and organized. Best sellers and recommended reads are on the tables down the middle aisle of the store. They have a great selection of magazines. There's a cute children's area in the back. There's a nice size cafe. You can find bookmarks, planners, pens, pencils, and other accessories near the front of the store by the registers. Parking can be a major hassle in this shopping center. Honestly, I typically order books online because the price is so much lower. However, when I need a book quickly or I want to shop the sales/specials, I'll go to B&N. Recently I visited the Mt. Pleasant location of Barnes & Noble. I had a list of a few texts I wanted to acquire, but I also shopped the sales/specials. Several employees came and asked me if I needed assistance. Some seating in random spots as well as in the "Cafe" where you can get a coffee and a pastry to enjoy while you read the book that you're probably not going to pay for. You know when someone is hungry with power and just makes no sense? That's Pam here. The actual worst retail employee I've been in 2022. I've been a B&N member for a year now and have used it once a week if not more. From AZ, CO, TN, VA, etc. that I've used it in the passed year I ask if they can price adjust to online and they do then they get my membership and they do my extra 10% off. NEVER ONCE has it cause a single problem: well until Pam today. She told me I could not double dip with discounts. When I was heading back in a lady behind me in line originally told me she couldn't believe he rude she was to me because they've done it to her before too. So I went back in once finding out In store pickup would take a few hours explaining that everyone other B&N store I've gone to can do it but this location in Charleston cannot? She continues to attempt to belittle me by telling me "its only $4". I told her it's not the money it's the fact that I pay for this membership have used it well near 100 times in the passed year and this is the one location that doesn't do it? Seems kinda weird to me. She continues with "I can do it for you since you keep insisting because I have the authority but I won't do it again so you think you have special privilege" I said it's not "special privilege" when every other location does it. So I told her I would leave a review about her and left. And I will be cancelling my membership because there are other book stores in CHS with better attitudes from their employees and the only reason I kept going to B&N was because of my membership. read more

i love bookstores and, yes, I admit- BN is a fave. Sue me, haters of mega-chains and Starbucks-domination. Since I moved to Chattanooga, I have not spent ANY time at my happy place - mainly because the only BN around is by the mall, Hamilton Place, and not at all convenient for me. Sigh. But . . . then the clouds parted and I got to spend a week at our beach place outside Charleston, and today spend about three hours lolling about a little piece of heaven. Nice staff, very quick to bus tables for those readers-not-buyers. Pretty large Starbucks with lots of tables (and its own entrance/exit). Awesome selection (and organization) of new paper and hard backs, yet a mild one of magazines (compared to BN at The Peach, a dearth of the glossy stuff). I don't give four stars because their "hard" topic books - history, research, etc- seem a little underplayed. Warning- parking is a bear, everywhere in the shopping center and especially at BN because there are about six spaces right in front (and they are with a Bath & Body Works and a Gap doors down) and right by one of the roundabouts peppered throughout the complex. All that said, a nice afternoon spent in a place and with things I love! And I didn't even get coffee. read more

It's like every B&N you've ever visited: there's a Starbucks and too many people sharing too little wifi bandwidth, there's the usual display of bargain books and NOOKs that no one wants anymore but they hope they can sell by putting them RIGHT UP FRONT, and they will "gladly" order anything their buyers didn't realize someone might actually want to read and you'll only have to wait two weeks for it to arrive. But unlike other B&N's you might have seen, this one has ZERO comfortable seating (no couches or comfy chairs) and it still has a music section in the back where you can buy physical copies of music to play on vinyl or compact disc. They also have staff members who are well-versed in playing up the "discount club" offer but are slow slow slow when you want them to tell you where something you're interested in might be shelved in the store. There are few bookstores in the Charleston area anymore, but even so, this one is not worth the trip. read more

It is a good place to find the book you need, but also to meet people and conduct business. The staff is helpful and help you find the exact book or magazine you are searching for. When it comes to book stores, I'm always down for going in and browsing and adding to my list of titles I need to read. Stopped in here the other day trying to kill time. Actually talked to one of the employees pretty extensively about the Nook - specifically playing with the new Nook Color.... pretty nice but it's diverting away from being an e-reader and being something to rival a tablet or iPad. I will probably pick up an e-reader someday, but I still like the feel and smell of a book. That being said B&N is a good location to find most things - they have a large periodical section as well and usually some sort of coffee/caffine producer inside. This location was no exception and it seemed like there were a lot of people in here too. read more

This is going to be a bad one so hang on to your butts. This B&N is always packed and the cafe is a nice touch even though they are basically the worst cafe in the world ever. Ever ever. The people that work at the fake Starbucks are the WORST. Rude and just plain unprofessional. First, I'm corrected inappropriately after ordering a cafe au lait. No, it's not a misto. No one at any other coffee shop in the damn free world calls it this except Starbucks and they are punk ass bean jockeys. Next, my friend orders a cafe au lait with soy milk. She pays. They get the order wrong. She reminds them she ordered with soy milk. They tell her that soy milk costs 55 cents more. She says fine, even though that was what she ordered, hoping maybe they'd realize they messed that up on their own and correct. Fast forward to coffee delivery and the dude looks at her and says, "ok, that's 55 cents." We both have a silent heart attack eye roll. She says all I have is my card, and then he takes the card and says with confusion, "you want to run your card for 55 cents??" IS THIS A FREAKING JOKE??? He takes it and runs it for 66 cents. Not 55. This is crap. This is appalling. Not only will I no longer frequent this cafe, but B&N also gets the boot for employing a bunch of turds. Good day. read more

Don't understand why the Towne Center branch gets such a low rating. IMO, this is one of the better Barnes and Noble. Always lively. In my experience staff have always been very helpful. Always nice to sit at their Starbucks cafe while flipping through books have picked up off the shelf. read more

I rarely go to bookstores anymore. And when I do it is a very focused visit. However last week I needed a pick me up and I spent over two hours in BN. I was pleasantly delighted to see it was so crowded on a Thursday afternoon. And honestly it seemed not much different than when I used to practically live in the bookstore a decade ago. The store is very well stocked and has very cute bookish gifts to accompany the books. Would be nice to have some of those big comfy chairs to sit in. read more

The store was organized very nicely and was very quiet. I found what I was looking for. I would say this prices were fair but definitely not low. Only downside was that people inside the starbucks part of the store were not wearing masks and that was a little uncomfortable. Other than that I would definitely return for more books in the future. I also really liked how they had little notes about which books to read like suggestions. read more

During my recent extended vacation in the IOP area, my kiddo and I visited this B&N several times. It was very disappointing. Not once during ANY of my visits did anyone say, "Hello!" or ask me if we needed help with anything...unless we were checking out. The Children's section always looked unkept. I went into this Barnes and Nobel for the purpose of looking at local cookbooks. They had a section dedicated to regional cookbooks and had a very nice selection of different community cookbooks, collections from local restaurants, and southern style cooking books. That was the good part. I then had to use the restroom and it was trashed. There was not toilet paper dispenser, and the hand towels consisted of a roll of industrial paper towels on the counter. Mothers was also graffiti on the wall. If I did not know better I would have thought that I was in the restroom at a truck stop. I also do not get the pricing strategy of the Barnes and Nobel stores. I know I am paying a convince fee for being able to get the book that day, but really the price difference between buying it at the store and ordering it at the store is just too great. I end up ordering the books from the store to have them shipped to my house for less. read more

We're here once a week or so. It's usually busy; it's part of Towne Center where you can walk, shop, eat, or see a movie. We've always thought the staff in the bookstore and cafe were friendly and kind. We are there often enough you'd think we would've encountered a grump at least once but we haven't. They offer teacher discounts and B&N member discounts. Strengths: easy, fun place to hang out, meet up, and find a good book or gift. Great location. Friendly, helpful staff. Weakness: Improvements should be made to the cafe seats - they really are gross -stained and worn- and need replacing. The kids area is a nice size and offers seating but each time we visit the popular and well loved train table it needs a serious cleaning and we end up avoiding it. *just a note in regards to a couple points made in older reviews: - that parking has improved somewhat since the garage was built - I've seen an effort by the staff to tell young/goofing off loiterers to behave and not disturb others -the bathrooms have been updated and kept better recently read more

Barnes & Noble should consider changing their name to "Absent & Wait". I truly support local businesses and find it incredibly more difficult each time I visit the Towne Center B & N Bookstore- there is never any floor assistance when locating a book coupled with a wait line to check out that averages approximately 15-20 minutes. I requested assistance three times while four potential customers waited w/ me for an employee to appear. Ordering online becomes more desirable each time I visit this store. As a general rule, I'm a big fan of Barnes and Noble in general. I enjoy the ambiance of the store combined with the cafe that serves Starbucks but isn't actually a Starbucks. Most B&N's are very nice, with helpful staff and a good selection of books. However, this Barnes and Noble deviates from that solid formula. I rarely go into a B&N to purchase a book. I am always there to study or do work at the cafe and do some book browsing in the meantime. With that said, I'm not a freeloader and always pay my way by making a purchase or two at the cafe while taking up space at one of the tables. Because I consider this an eating establishment too, I am even more horrified at the poor conditions of their bathroom. This is one of the dirtiest, smelliest bathrooms I've been to in a supposedly respectable establishment. It is ALWAYS out of toilet paper, paper towels and soap. In addition, the stall doors are often broken as is the handle to the main door. The counters are disgusting, covered in soapy grime and trash on the floor. I've been to truck stop bathrooms that have been nicer. Lastly, it always has a slight raw sewage smell in there that is terribly off-putting. I try to avoid this bathroom and go to the bathroom at the Old Navy next door. The second strike against this particular location is the high concentration of unattended children, mostly pre-teens and very young teenagers hanging out, assing off, and being rude and loud. I realize this isn't a library and I'm not complaining that it isn't quiet, because I like a nice buzz of conversations and espresso makers, but I really dislike the loud, annoying raucous that these kids produce. Maybe I'm just getting old and curmudgeonly, but it makes me avoid this place like the plague. Lastly, the seating in the B&N is not bad, but they have limited outlets to plug in laptops and the tables always seem to be jammed together, probably a result of the congregating teens. Its not really a very comfortable place to work on anything, which may be by design to discourage freeloading squatters. Other than these major objections, its a pretty standard B&N with a good selection of books and magazines. I've never encountered any rude staff. read more

This B&N is your typical B&N bookseller. I do agree there are always a lot of kids around, so it may not be the best place to study. However, with that being said, the cafe area was roomy with lots of seating. Their Starbucks isn't actually a Starbucks, though, so your Starbucks gift cards are not good here :( read more

The store is wonderful and helpful but the FAKE Starbucks names no sense to me! Went in today and was told by associate, "we aren't a real Starbucks" ??!! Not sure if the 50ish blonde lady manager still runs this store because I will never shop there again, but...she floats around in some garish kaftan acting like the Queen Mother and all but sneers at customers until she sees some group of similarly aged friends who she then treats like royalty. I would sometimes look through a few magazines (sometimes buying them) while I had coffee (which was terribly inconsistent and sometimes just bad) and she would trail behind me like a busy body when I politely took the magazines back to the rack and placed them RIGHT where they belonged. She would then make a show of straightening them when they were already straight and just gave off an incredibly haughty, rude, condescending and unwelcoming vibe. Meanwhile I would see people walk into the cafe with literally a two foot high stack of books, roughly thumb through them while dropping crumbs and sneezing all over the pages...and then leave the entire stack in a heap on the table. I can't imagine any place having such a perpetually rude store manager, especially when they are in the failing business of printed literature. Frankly I hope this place finally goes out of business. If you want coffee and a bit of reading, just take your laptop to any nearby Starbucks...relax and read the NY Times or whatever online. read more

Mary Alice Monroe has done it again! Beach House Reunion completes a wonderful series about the Rutledge family of Charleston South Carolina and their adventures at the beach house on Sullivan's Island. The book brings everyone full circle and most of all it completes the hopes that Lovie had for her family. Lovie is my favorite character from the series. Her strength and love for her children, her sweet home, and of course the turtles, brings back so many memories of raising my children here. I was so happy to see Cara fall in love and find happiness again and to carry on the sea turtle work that Lovie cherished and to stay at the beach house. The ending, especially with my favorite scripture, Rise up My Love and Come Away, touched me deeply. It was included in my wedding. A perfect ending to a perfect series. Read all the books from this series by Mary Alice Monroe! You too will fall in love! read more

Don't order a chai tea latte it tastes like nothing but warm milk, something bad must be wrong with their pump. I asked for a new one and it tasted the same. They offered a different drink but i dont drink coffee, never offered a refund, i didnt bother asking for one. Hopefully they tried it so they can get it corrected. Disgusting. read more
