Employees Mr. Rodney and Lilly greeted my sister and I warmly, and when we told them it was her first day in the city, they told us all the good places to go in DC! While we were leaving it started pouring rain 20 minutes before closing. As customers stood in the entryway, Employees stood with us handing out Ice Cream and Trash bags as rain ponchos with a smile on their face. Their attitude made this experience much more enjoyable and My sister and I were incredibly grateful. Shout out to Mr. Rodney, Lilly and the store manager. I've had a great experience at Trader Joe's. This location is incredibly convenient, situated right across from the Eastern Market Metro Station, which makes it an easy stop whether you're commuting or just in the neighborhood. Even when the lines look long, they move surprisingly fast. The staff is always efficient, professional, and keeps things running smoothly. I also really appreciate the quality and pricing of their products--it's hard to beat the value. I was especially impressed by their Prosecco and cava selection. The quality for the price was a pleasant surprise and definitely worth exploring. Another big plus is the parking situation, which is much better than expected for this area. I bought a two pieces of fish. Cod and Salmon. The piece of cod was listed at 0.94 pounds. This is equivalent to 15.0 ounces. However, it actually weighed only 12.5 ounces. Please note the photos. The piece of salmon was listed at 0.99 pounds. This is equivalent to 15.8 ounces. However, it weighed only 14.7 ounces. These are not small discrepancies, and they represent a consistent practice. I do not understand why Trader Joes has to cheat. It should accurately report the weight and charge appropriately and as necessary for its bottom line. Clearly there is no recourse. This is a smaller location but the selection is usually decent for a location in the city. The trick is to shop early and learn which days they get new shipments in. It's conveniently located across the street from the Eastern Market Metro and around the corner from Eastern Market itself. The frozen food selection is decent. I can definitely say this was the fastest I've ever gotten through a checkout line with such a long line I was in and out of Trader Joe's within 20 minutes I could find my groceries very easily, and the customer service was very pleasant. Overall, this was my first time going to this Trader Joe's, and I will definitely be back. Parking can be a little tight so plan to go early and they pretty much had everything I needed! read more

This will be my first review of 2025! So hopefully this will get me Yelp Elite since I didn't make the cut last year...but anywho. I really loved this TJs because it seemed to have a lot of items that my main TJs in Springfield don't carry. Now we are in the heart of DC and I love that it has an underground covered parking deck that you can get validated for I believe it was 2-hours. And that day it was raining like crazy. So covered parking was a plus. Not really much to say as this is TJs and what more can I say besides one of my favorite stores! read more

I have never had anything less than a great experience in a Trader Joe's until today. I even used to drive 3 hours to go to the closest one when we lived in AZ. But I was treated horribly last weekend at Eastern Market in DC. The security manager could have said "Did you see the sign that says no pets?" I would have said no I did not (there was no sign on the outside door, I checked. The sign on the inside door was not visible bc it was an open automatic door) Then he could have said I'm sorry but we don't allow pets even up here (an area that's not in the store just inside the door to the escalators that go down into the store) I would have explained that I felt like I was going to pass out and stepped inside to sit down for a minute. When I didn't feel any better my son went into the store to get some watermelon and lemonade for me while I called my husband to come pick us up bc I didn't feel well enough to walk home.) Instead the security manager shouted loudly and angrily at me while still on the up escalator and at least 20 feet away "YOU CANT HAVE A DOG IN *MY* STORE" I wanted to comply so I asked him if he could help me outside (bc I still felt dizzy and faint). He did not respond and instead turned and went down the down escalator and began yelling at my son who was at the check out. I was worried about what was going to happen next so I got myself out the door and sat on the burning hot sidewalk to wait for my son. For what it's worth, a woman customer stopped me on the way out to say she brings her pet dog in there all the time even down in the store so she didn't understand what he was yelling at me for. I'm sure being the security manager at that location is challenging. But I was clean and nicely dressed and quietly sitting on a bench by the door with my dog laying down under the bench (clearly not loitering or a vagrant or even trying to take my dog in the store). Then when I asked him for help, I didn't receive any or even a question if I was okay. It would have only taken a minute to handle this with the professional and compassionate customer service Trader Joe's is known for. I only live a few minutes away and have loved shopping here but there are other nice markets in the neighborhood so my family won't shop there again. read more

This is my favorite Trader Joe's. Mostly because I know exactly where everything is. It is smaller than some of the other locations though. The staff here are great and will always go above and beyond to be of assistance. They wont hesitate to check for stock in the back, or look things up in the system. They also are always so positive and helpful whenever I call to ask stock. They never make you feel like a bother. TJ's is my happy place. read more

The only bad thing, is the size. Everything else is 5 stars. The cashiers are full. The shelf's are stocked. And staff is 9n the floor to help where needed. So many available cashiers make the wait time very short. I would recommend this location. read more

It is rare for me to write a review for a grocery store, but I just have to give this Trader Joe's the shout-out it deserves for exceptional service! On our first full day in Washington DC, we stopped by this location to pick up some quick breakfast items for the week such as yogurt, fruit and bread. Located right across the street from the Eastern Market Metro station, the storefront appears quite small, but after a ride down the escalator, the full shop comes into view... and it was super busy! A few minutes into shopping, we met the kindest team member, SANI (I believe that was his name). He truly had the most genuine spirit, graciously helping and interacting with customers. We were hoping to find some seedless red grapes that day, which we didn't initially see on the shelves and when asked, Sani sincerely apologized that they only had green ones and seeded red ones. Understandable and not a problem at all. About 15 minutes later, we were approaching the checkout stands when Sani walked over to us with a box of seedless red grapes! We really appreciated that he took the time to double-check, remembered that we asked in the first place and was able to catch us before we left! His generosity made our day. The other staff member that we interacted with during checkout was friendly as well, but Sani's customer service went above and beyond. Thank you! read more

I do find it interesting when visiting a new location for the first time due to the inventory, layout & employees' personalities. The latter & per usual were friendly & helpful. I love that Trader Joe's sells many items under their private labels & at a significant discount to brand-name equivalents. & with over 4k items to choose from - plant-based/gourmet/organic/imported foods, wine/beer (where permitted), provide something for everyone. Welcome to my Cap Hill TJ's Telenovella; unnecessarily dramatic ? Perhaps. Am I living a "Karen" fantasy tonight? You be the judge. "Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night." Bette Davis [Prologue] Typically my reviews for Trader Joe's are five stars, (excluding the recent tragic trend of no coffee samples), but the staff friendliness at this location is frequently off-putting. There are so many sourpusses in happy shirts, including one of the captains. If it weren't for Captain April and Sophie, (and a few other crew) I'd consider the customer-friendly KAI ZEN culture DEAD at this location. [If it sounds like I used to work at Trader Joe's it's because I did yeeears ago.] But my experience tonight was the worst (customer) experience I've ever had at a Trader Joe's, and it just wasn't because my reason for a *potential future return* was denied. [Scene 1] It was the arrogant sounding SmackDown from Captain Slicked-Back Hair I received for assuming that I might be able to return a few unused, unopened, undamaged bath/ beauty products I no longer needed, bought a week or two ago. He didn't say "sorry we are no longer accepting returns for items no longer wanted/ needed / overpurchased." That would be understandable. Instead when I asked what how long I had for a return to be accepted, he said ***"that is not a policy."*** My face clearly looked shocked and incredulous as I responded "What do you mean that is not a policy?" He said it's not Trader Joe's policy to accept returns because you didn't want the item or you bought too many. It has *never* been an acceptable return reason" "Huh! I used to work at Trader Joe's, Captains accepted that at our location. Did they change the policy or it's different at other locations? " " That has never been *any* Trader Joe's policy. That is just not a policy. It's not even a thing.*= Some Captains may have accepted them at their discretion, and Trader Joe's does not do a good job of clearly stating the *real* return policy, but that has never been an official allowed reason for return" "Interesting , this is the first time in over 20 years of shopping at Trader Joe's and having worked there I've ever heard this." [In a frustrated publicly audible voice] "Returning items bc they are no longer needed is no one's return policy." "What are you talking about?" "It's just not, no companies accept returns for that reason!" I just stood there stunned, feeling like I was in an alternate Trader Jerk's universe, my retail life experience for the last 30 years invalidated... that whole interaction just didn't seem right. Before I grudgingly left, I said "well I accept that as a challenge to research your alleged universal fact." [End Scene] [Scene 2] And here I am sitting in a pizza place 30 mins later, with 7 and counting screenshots of major retailer return policies that contradict Captain Slick, first among them is from Amazon: valid reasons in their standard return menu is "no longer needed" and "purchased in error." And so far most of them state they DO NOT REQUIRE a reason for a return as long as the item is unused, undamaged, in original packaging, and being returned with the receipt (unless exchange for store credit) within their standard return time frame. [End Scene] [Epilogue] I shall return to this Trader Joe's soon and hopefully have a face-to-face chat with Cap'n Slick with my screen shots in hand. It will be an interesting Interaction for sure! I hope next time I'm the one who calls the attention of a small audience in full but non yelling voice range. A nice, surprisingly spacious Trader Joe that's underground, right across from the Eastern Market metro station. So conveniently located. Upon walking in, you go down the escalators to Trader Joe which is connected to underground parking. It's well lit, clean, well organized. You can find the usual Trader Joe stuff. Came here to grab some eggs, banana, some quick stuff. Among the surprise finds was rosemary marcona almonds. Nice healthy snack. read more

Trader Joe's is a whimsical grocery store chain that offers a variety of groceries & other goods, typically directly from their own distributors. I actually never heard of it until I moved to the DC area some years ago. I initially thought it was just another small chain with expensive items similar to Safeway & Giant. I decided to finally go a couple of years ago & now it's my preferred grocery store. I, of course, still have to go to other, larger stores to buy specific products. My go-to items tend to rotate based on season and my mood. For example, in the fall, I get all things pumpkin spice, including the Pumpkin Spice Brioche Bread. It was so heavenly & paired well with some Pumpkin Spice butter I bought at another store. The seasonal & holiday decorations, along with products, really make the shopping worthwhile. The staff at most locations I've visited are very kind & friendly. They check customers out super fast & delicately package items in bags. Many of the Trader Joe's I've visited have ample parking for customers. read more

Twice this past week, I had an unhappy experience with the quality of fresh vegetables and I hope that it does not reflect a systemic quality control issue. The English peas had a sweet smell and tasted bad. The organic cucumbers in the container with a plastic wrap were slimy when we took off the plastic and tasted a bit sour. We threw out the cucumbers but, when I went to the store to return the peas, the man at the customer desk was sceptic that the peas were from the store. Fortunately, I had the receipt and got a refund! read more

Trader Joe's has an array of items to choose from. If you're looking for fresh produce, 2$ wine in a box, or even local products, check it out. I like to pick up a bouquet of flowers every once a while too. They have a great selection. You can't go wrong and the prices are reasonable. Normally pretty stocked with things when I go. It's only happened about three times where I have not found what I needed. Normally very organized and clean, and someone is always available if you need help (they're all really nice and pleasant too!). It does get superrrrr packed in there though and this location is very tiny. There is a parking garage attached to it and also street parking. A Metro station is right across the street. It's in a lower level (basement) so there is no phone reception unless you're by the escalators. read more

The best grocery store for singles or couples. I'm rarely disappointed by the things I try there so I always try to add something new to my cart. The staff there is the nicest, most helpful group ever. Don't go Sunday, it's purgatory due to all of the Capitol Hill parents shopping there. The Trader Joe's is fine. But what's with the homeless camped out at the entrance? It's not a good look.

My second time at this location and by far my least favorite of the 3 locations I've been to in D.C. (The best one being the new location in Florida ave). The aisles area unnecessarily small, you can barely move past the person in front of you without running into the person walking in the opposite direction. They seemed to be out of too much stuff despite the fact they were currently restocking. Otherwise TJ, like all TJs around the country, is my favorite place on earth.... For groceries. I bought the DC Brau pack of 6 beers for the first time because #adulting. I couldn't decide between the 3 choices (the public, Indian pale, Belgian style pale -- increasing alcohol content from 6-7%) and I decided with the Indian pale. Great choice!!! I absolutely love it! I've had DC Brau before but of course couldn't remember which, and I'd say I've had the Indian pale before. I recommend. The last thing I'll mention is WHY did you have to get rid of Green Fin MERLOT???? It was the best wine... Ever! read more

The day this Trader Joe's opened is the day all of Capitol Hill rejoiced. FINALLY, the day had come when we didn't have to trek out to U Street NW or Foggy Bottom or worse Alexandria for cheap wine and chicken tikka masala frozen lunches. In all seriousness, this TJ's is pretty great. It's in the basement of a new development in the heart of Eastern Market across the street from the Eastern Market Metro. It's bigger than the Foggy Bottom location and about the same size as the U Street NW one. We went on a Sunday early afternoon and it was crowded, but it didn't feel as crowded as it was. The staff are friendly and efficiency is their game. The line may seem long, but it moves fast since the staff are on it! As you wait, enjoy free coffee and samples in the back or enjoy a wine tasting they often do on weekends. Somehow TJ's branding makes us think it's healthier food, but it is NOT. It's all processed but tastes so good and it's CHEAP compared to the regular store and for sure less expensive than Whole Foods. A few favorites: -The frozen Indian food lunches complete with naan and chutney (Each sold separately). -Pumpkin Os cereal. -Fresh flowers for way cheaper than anywhere else. -Good wine for just a few dollars. -Hard cider -Decent coffee. This Trader Joe's is great to have on the area. I just hate the parking situation. You have to go to the lowest part of the parking garage and follow all these signs. Then sometimes the others in the garage are so impatient or inconsiderate of others. It doesn't help that the structure has such tight spacing. I'd hate to park here regularly as a resident. Buuuut ultimately I'm thankful that there even is a parking garage option. Tickets get validated for free first 90 mins. read more

I may have actually gotten a little teary with excitement the first time that I stepped into the newly opened Eastern Market Trader Joe's. We have been waiting for this for SO LONG on the east side of DC! With that being said, I was initially hesitant when I heard that the entire store was going to be underground (long live natural light), but the design and the flow of the store turned out great for such a small space and it doesn't feel too basement-y. I have heard, however, that the parking garage is difficult. Several friends have told me horror stories about forgetting to validate or losing their parking voucher and thus having to pay something like 8 dollars just to get out of the garage. Seeing as I have not yet parked in the garage, I don't have any complaints about parking. If you have Zone 6 parking you can find a street spot, and this location is right by the Eastern Market train. I love most things about Trader Joe's, but one more tip from an experienced shopper: don't get too excited about the avocados. The price is great, but the quality has never been so. Anything/everything else? Go nuts! My favorites include their quirky 99 cent greeting cards, boxed soups, frozen cauliflower pizza crust, selection of nuts, and I am even loyal to their face moisturizer. I love you, Trader Joe's. Coulda woulda shoulda. I came here for the very first time tonight and I have to admit that I was surprised by a couple of things. Firstly the size of the grocery store was one of the smallest that I've seen in the area, and I've been to several of their locations. I wouldn't consider myself a regular shopper here, but I've shopped here for some basic grocery otems, and it's usually because they have been located nearby. More surprisingly however was how busynthe place actually was. At right around 6:1/ the store was absolutely packed. There is a line that stretches halfway around the store just to check out. Honestly I was just going to pickup a half gallon of milk and some oranges, but I simply couldn't deal with the extensive line tonight. I did see several employees in the isles helping customers which was a good thing. read more

I think they had ran out the first two times because there is a lot of foot traffic in this TJs. For easy & relatively healthy meals, I now really enjoy picking up the: -cauliflower rice -cauliflower stir fry -caulifower gnocchi Aldi's sells the same cauliflower rice for half the price at TJs. However, I would come back for the stir fry and gnocchi. We also came in to pick up some salmon, and they also ran out of that on a weekday evening. We also asked whether TJs sells their sriracha and we were told they don't. read more

I had not realized I never did a review so here goes. I usually just run in when I have time to spare or if I knew for certain there was one particular thing that I forgot. That is usually chips. The Sweet Plantain ones or Tortilla Chips. For Memorial Day, I thought I would visit Trader Joe's and actually make groceries.* Weaving through the parking garage, which is shared with the residential portion of the building, I was so glad that it was a holiday and it was empty. This has got to be the tightest parking garage I've ever driven in. If your car is older than 1990, excluding Chevettes, Citations, Omnis and Escorts, you not making it. After parking and catching my anxious breath I made it into Trader Joe's and that line was like an anaconda. It was so bad I was turning around to leave but I remembered that I needed to get my parking validated. Kill. After getting a bunch of cool Trader Joe's stuff; sauces, crackers, et cetera. I got in line and was ready to wait. Trader Joe's being as progressive as they are, has a lot of staff so I would look up and have to catch up because the line was moving. Per usual the person that rung me up was quick and courteous. I still don't know where to put the items for them to scan them. Oh well, I was out of there. And my forgetful self forgot to ask for parking validation but it was cool, they asked me at the register. *I never knew that people in Louisiana used the verb Make for Buying groceries until someone once asked me if I was from New Orleans. I've heard that phrase my whole life in reference to trips to Food Lion and Ukrop's Central VA. read more

It's the typical Trader Joe's setup: small store, with an even smaller, difficult to navigate parking lot. But one thing I've noticed about this one is that even during peak times, like the weekend, it's still not too busy, like other TJs I've been to. The line is still small or non-existant, and I can easily navigate through the store and get what I want. I took off a star because on more than one occasion (like my most recent visit) I've been charged a bag fee even though I brought my own reusable bag, and I should've gotten the reusable bag fee discount instead. It's only 5 cents so it's not that big of a deal, but I don't understand how it keeps happening. read more
