The Corner Market, 400 East Capitol St NE - This smaller shop is a very practical place for a quick purchase. I liked its local character, friendly service, and good selection of basic groceries and snacks. Exactly the kind of store you appreciate during a city walk when you need something quickly without visiting a large supermarket. However, the prices were quite high. read more

I originally confused this store with one across the street and hate that I did. I LOVE this store. The people are always so kind and I always come here over the one across the street specifically for this reason. They have a great selection and are a great neighborhood market. This Place has the best pupusas I've tried in all of VA. It is always very hard to find a place with very good pupusas. The filling is amazing and a good amount as well, the salsa and Hispanic coleslaw that comes with it is amazing. The service here is a 10/10 and the place is just very ambient place. Has everything you need and a bit more. You could really get by doing all your grocery shopping here, though you might not want to because it is a tad pricey, but not more than average for most bodega/corner markets in DC (it's to be expected). They have a great selection of wine/beer, some fresh produce with the essentials. They have most basic food items like bread, milk, cereal, beans, rice, canned foods, etc and they even have cleaning supplies and basic household items. This place really came to the rescue a number of times when we needed sugar or some sort of spice for a recipe in a pinch! read more

This is a tiny little mini-market that carries a surprisingly decent selection of ... um, pretty much everything. With Tetris style snugness, they've got a lot of what you'd normally need to jump in the car for... a modest, but well-stocked fresh veggie section, and Glide dental floss - c'mon, you're not going to find winter-frickin'-green Glide at 7-Eleven! But the main reason I like this place is because of Joon and the rest of his uncommonly warm and friendly coworkers. If you walk your dog to the store, they give him a milkbone. They sell five packs of string cheese for $2.19 and magnum bottles of wine for about $12. This is a good place to go if you ever get locked out of your apartment all night and just want a five pack of string cheese and nearly 50 ounces of wine to get you through a rough night stranded on the streets of Capitol Hill, waiting for your landlord's office to open back up in the morning. I don't think they sell any weapons, but you can probably just get another five pack of string cheese and use that to barter for your life in the event that you come across a roving pack of violent hobos. Not that there are too many hobos on the hill these days, pretty sure the yuppies exterminated them some time back in 2004 or 2005. This is one of the few places I've seen on the Hill where cheeses are cheaper than an object that can be fashioned into a weapon. For you yuppies, they also sell quinoa by the box for about a hundred dollars. That's not going to help you if you're stranded in the streets all night, kind of hard to cook quinoa via trashcan fire. But hell, don't let me discourage you. I know how yuppies get angry when they can't have their ancient grains. Their selection of white wines is better than their selection of red. They also sell various produce essentials that appear to be rotting on the shelves. The broccoli was brown and looked weird. Not that you're going to buy broccoli for a homeless night in the streets, that would just be ridiculous. read more

Hands down, the best corner store on the Hill. PROS: The best prices overall - I pay a dollar or sometimes two less per item than at some other corner stores. The service - I love these people. They love their customers and aren't hesitant to show it. (It's a healthy level of love. They aren't licking faces or anything like that.) The selection - fantastic array of wine, food, domestic staples. They also go a step beyond - cage-free eggs available at a corner store? Where else does that happen? read more

Cool little market on the Hill. Typical but a cool wine and beer selection. Expensive as all convenience stores are.

This is an above average convenience store. Prices are about what you'd expect - not low but not extortion-level either. The beer selection is pretty solid so when all the liquor stores are closed on Sundays and you don't feel like schlepping all the way to Safeway or Harris Teeter you can get some pretty good stuff here! read more

The people that own and/or work here are SO NICE (as opposed to the folks running the store across the street.) We can usually find everything for which we are looking, from packaged hot cocoa to cilantro to seltzer to powdered wasabi. Some things are really overpriced, but thats too be expected in exchange for convenience. read more

This place is fantastic. The guys that run it are great, and they are always willing to chat. The first aisle has tons of wine, vegetables, cheeses, and meats, more than you would expect. There's a large selection of beer and frozen foods, as well as bread. You can find just about anything in there! They also have sales they announce on Twitter. To make it even better, there is a Capital Bikeshare station right out front! read more

This little market on Capitol Hill is kind of like an urban 7-Eleven. It's not all that big, but they carry pretty much everything you always run out of, but don't want to go to far to get. Run by two very funny young guys, Joon and John, who make the trip to the store for beer, wine cigs, bread, etc. a little more tolerable. They carry some frozen dinners, frozen pizza, cookies, coffee, soups, cold cuts, eggs, paper products and so on. They also carry some produce, but it often doesn't look that fresh--I'd take pass on the produce, but everything that doesn't go bad is just fine. read more

Terrific corner market. Very well stocked. Price competitive with super markets. Very friendly staff. If they see you leave without buying anything they will ask what you were looking for, and will try to order it for you for next time. Surprisingly good wine and beer selection. I've shopped there quite a bit, often buying perishable items. I've never had anything that was on the brink of going bad, unlike what you get in so many urban corner markets. Highly recommend this great little local business. They work very hard, and it shows. read more

This is a great little store to pick up groceries on the way home from work. They have a nice selection of items, and things are generally pretty fresh. They also are pretty good at putting prices on stuff, which is a problem in many of the other small stores on capitol hill. read more

Purchased a box of rigatoni for dinner the other night and found several weevils inside the box upon opening it when I got home. Store owner did give me back my money but I will not be shopping there for any items that are not sealed in a bag. This is the second time I've come across this issue with this market (the other while purchasing a box of mac and cheese) and wrongly assumed it was a packaging issue from the distributor. read more
