Called asking about availability of an item. Person said they had some of what I was looking for. I said I was on my way, would stop in. I walked in found the items, store person said hello, just then another person walked in. He greeted her, asked how he could help her and proceeded to do so, completely ignoring me like I was invisible. Apparently doesn't need my business. We recently purchased a set of drums for our son and Jon was extremely knowledgeable and helpful to ensure that we purchased the right size for our son. We had been searching for a used drum set for a few months prior and we were quite impressed with excellent price that he offered as well. Trader Jons is my favorite place to go when I'm in the Lake Villa area. I have found perfect gifts and upcycled many as well, including my kids video games. I have found unique camera & video equipment, and was able to get a good trade in value for my guitar and upgraded the stereo system for my car. Lots of cool stuff, made an appointment to go back to see some jewelry, maybe a gold ring & necklace. Soo much to see, didn't have time to see it all! You'll love the lady at the front counter too! THIS PLACE WILL SCAM YOU OUT OF YOUR MONEY. If I could leave zero stars I would. Do not leave this place without a receipt. We made a cash purchase of two video game systems (Xbox one & NES). The man running the place stated he had personally tested the systems himself and they were both in working condition. He stated that if there was any issues to bring them back right away. The Nintendo would not read the game cartridges. I brought it back in just now and he claimed that this system was not the one he sold to "someone" (me) and that without a receipt he wouldn't do anything. He then proceeded to offer to sell me a knockoff Nintendo....thank you Trader Jon's for ripping me off. read more

Just want to say that this is my favorite place to go when I have a few extra dollars to spend. Trader Jons might not be for everybody like the guy who made the previous review but I can say they do have alot of different merchandise. Not just in store but online through eBay. Also I have never had a problem with any of the staff not wanting to sell an item. In fact I have never had a bad experience with any of the staff. All I can say is I'd rather give my business to them than any other pawn shop in town. read more

I am a snowbird and spend some holidays too in northern Illinois. I am a jewerlyholic and I have purchased several pieces of jewelry over the past several years at this store. I have always gotten a super great price at Trader Jons. I am treated with respect and find the staff to both be knowledgeable and fun to deal with. I always get a good laugh or two whenever I drop in. Check out his Ebay site, where most are auctions that start at ridiculously low bids. It's been awhile since I bid or won anything, but purchased a power washer for peanuts a few years back. I recently started to use vapor electronic cigarette replacements, and like his brand that has a long lasting battery. My favorite flavor is spearmint! read more

Came here to sell my son's Xbox and the owner was really nice. He gave us a fair price. I returned a few days later to check out his great selection of old video games. I purchased an original Nintendo and he gave me a discount on a few games I bought with the system. Lots of hidden gems in the store if you're looking for something unusual. Nice people working there, lots of stuff for sale, and a lot of variety. Just be careful when selling. As with most pawn shops, they give you around a third of the value of the item, which is understandable. However, their method of finding prices seems to be looking on eBay. They'll look for the cheapest listing on the site and tell you that is the price you could get it for online, instead of using the average price of the item. Example: A popular game is listed by several people on ebay, with the average price of each listing being $35. However there is a new listing for the item for $10. This is usually done to attract bidders to a new item, while the final selling price will be around $35. The guys at Joe's will tell you the $10 price instead of the $35 average price to try and get you to agree to a lower selling price. That was a bit shady, but as far as pawn shops go, pretty nice place. read more

I've bought and sold several items at this shop and the price they pay for your items is generally decent. The majority of the staff is friendly however I was a little put off because a staff member refused to sell me any coins because Jon wasn't there. Jon, i'm assuming knows a bit about coins but you would assume that he would either teach his staff about merchandise or at the very least set a price for the coins. The majority of the things they sell are either total garbage, over priced, or are overpriced garbage. read more

Expensive prices on many items. Like, really?? You know that its marked up so high because they figure on you offering them half. The staff always has to find the owner and call him to accept a deal you want to make. He's such a tough negotiator, its like he really doesn't want to sell the stuff.
