We were closely monitoring the weather and had a reservation for Friday. The weather did not appear to be in our favor so we contacted Amber. She was such a doll! She agreed that Thursday would be our best option and since she had availability she rescheduled us. We arrived at 8am and after a safety brief, she provided a highlighted map of where we needed to go. It took us about 5 hours to complete our mission, so much fun. I was so pleased with this campground. 3 people in my party used the bathhouse/showers and raved that they were the cleanest they have ever seen. We stayed in a full hookup RV site and the site was very level. Used only 1 leveler on one side of our travel trailer. We had a 38 foot travel trailer, tow vehicle, 2 SXS, trailer and another tow vehicle with plenty of space. Behind our site was a flowing creek/river, and we were able to open the back window in our bunkhouse to have a nice view. The owners are exceptional and so pleasant. They keep everything maintained and are beyond helpful. Approachable, friendly and always willing to help! I would absolutely recommend this place and will return to this same campground. Access to the trails was very convenient and just over 1/4 mile from the grounds. Both Rockhouse and Buffalo Mountain can be accessed via Devil Anse trail. Very convenient!

The current is mild and does most of the work for you, but there's plenty of opportunity to paddle if that's more of your style. These kayaks are super stable and seem like they would almost take a concentrated effort to make them tip. The river trail is amazingly clean. I could probably count on one hand the items of trash I noticed on the 4-mile trip.

Now, I will be totally honest and say that this was not my first choice. I wanted to go to Red River Gorge to kayak, as that's one of my favorite areas in the state; however, the water levels were so low that the kayaking options were extremely limited. After learning that news we looked around online and discovered Hatfield-McCoy River Trails. We called, asked a few questions, and decided to give it a shot. When we arrived everything seemed as usual. They have a small venue where they sell a few items and snacks, there are kayaks and tubes all around, and they also sell passes to zip line (though I don't know much about that, as we did not participate). We were loaded onto a bus and taken to the drop-in site, which is a short trip from the starting location. It was a bit odd, as it was next to several restaurant locations. I mean, we got into the water directly behind a Captain D's. But, once you take off the trip becomes a bit more scenic, which is nice. There are sections of the river that seem completely in nature, but in actuality you're next to a highway the entire time, so often you will hear vehicles driving by up above you. The point where the river trail ends is also very commercial. You stop at a boat dock in front of a Texas Roadhouse and shopping plaza. So, if you're looking for a secluded nature outing this trip is definitely not it. Overall the river is fairly clean as far as random trash goes, we saw a few cans, etc. in the water; however, we probably saw 200+ tires on our four mile journey. I know that seems like an exaggeration, but I assure you it is not. I may even be under-selling the amount of tires in that water. The trip itself was pretty fun. We had a group of family members, so we had a good time together. The river is very calm with a gentle current that will push you along for approximately the first three miles, but the last 3/4 of a mile or so you have to paddle hard to keep yourself going. There is also little to no shade on most of the trail. So, by the time we reached the end dock we were exhausted and extremely hot, as we had gone on one of the hottest days of the year. Now, here's where things really went wrong. I probably would have given Hatfield-McCoy River Trails a three star rating if not for what happened when we reached the dock, exhausted, and pulled our kayaks from the water. There was no one there to pick us up! I kid you not, we were alone with no idea how to get back to the location we had started from. So, we did what any reasonable person would do and called. We were told they had "waited on us for a long time" and had to go ahead and leave. Are you serious?! There were several people behind us on the trail, so we were not the last kayakers and we had not taken too much time - we didn't even stop along the trail to swim or anything (I did not want to get into that tire-infested water). Of course we were upset, and they said they would send someone to pick us up. At this point three additional kayakers pulled up to the dock behind us, as they had just finished the trail. (Two additional kayakers came over a half hour later as well.) We all waited there on the dock, in direct sunlight on one of the hottest days of the year, for thirty minutes before we called again. This time a different person answered the phone and seemed shocked to hear that we were there waiting and said they would send someone to pick us up right away. A few minutes later the bus arrived, we loaded on, and it took them an additional 15 minutes or so to load the kayaks. When the driver boarded the bus we finally thought we would be returning to our vehicle where we could bask in the sweet sweet air-conditioning and get something cold to drink. Nope. The driver then told us we would have to ride back with him to the drop-in site to take the kayaks to another group of people they had just dropped off there, because apparently they only have one bus and enough kayaks for one group at a time to be on the river. Ok, I get that this is a small operation, and that's fine. But, schedule the tours further apart, get another bus, get more kayaks, or something. Obviously kayaking is an outdoor activity, obviously summer weather is hot, obviously you're going to be tired from paddling; however, we were actually sick from the heat and direct sunlight by the time we finally made it back to our vehicle. No one should have to wait on a boat dock with literally no shade whatsoever for over half an hour for a ride to pick them up after a river trail excursion that they paid for. We were told someone would be there to pick us up, and when we called to ask why they were not there we were told they had waited and had to leave. That is no way to treat customers. I will never return to Hatfield-McCoy River Trails.

You honestly cannot beat the location of the motel, the convenience of being able to rent your machine and then drive a half mile down the road to access a trailhead, and the hospitality from the owners. The building and some of the features in the room are dated, worn out, or a little stained/marked up, but everything was functional. The beds are smaller double sized beds. It was a tight squeeze to fit my 5'7 frame and 6' boyfriend in the same bed. Just something to keep in mind, if you wanted to fit more than 2 adults in one room. The beds were super comfortable too. There's food, a conscience store, and gas all within walking distance. We'd definitely come back.

Microwave, mini fridge, plenty of towels and digital air control unit for comfort. Laundry was on site and in good working order. Beds were clean and linens supplied were good. Owner checked in on us several times to make sure we were ok. This is a small town, two gas stations were close by, family dollar, local grocery and a grill/bar across the street. Hotel owner has an onsite bar if your in the mood for a drink. Will return and would recommend to folks for a good friendly ATV/UTV hotel.

The curtains and lampshades were stained and the whole room smelled all strongly of cigarette smoke that we had to go buy a candle because it gave me a headache. And when we woke up, there was a roach that had gotten stuck on it's back in the ashtray. The high reviews on this motel are 100% fake. I asked a city worker and they said they get a lot of calls to this place- just get a tent and save yourself the trauma of this horror hiuse.

They took an old 'mountain top mine' and made it into a Links style golf course. The layout is well put together. In spots the course is wide open but there are areas that because of the local snakes they advise you don't go looking for you ball. The club house is okay for the location of the course. You actually drive by mining trucks to get to the top where the course is located. This course is a great use of some land that otherwise would have not been used. 'A gem amongst all the coal!'

Twisted Gun is more of a professional golf course. It's beautifully laid out on top of the…read moremountain, which was once a strip mine but was reclaimed. It has the type of fairways that you only see on pro tour courses. The greens are huge and normally fast. Plenty of hazards like sand traps and water. The only thing missing are trees. The fairways are long so anyone expecting a good score better be able to hit the long ball. The course is well maintained. Has a driving range as well as a practice green. It's an easy course to follow as there are hard top cart paths that lead to the next hole like a links course. Beautiful scenery with lots of wildlife to be seen. It has one restroom on each 9 holes made from a train caboose which adds a nice touch. The main thing to avoid are missing the fairways as the roughs are small and hitting past the rough is a lost ball. The tall grasses past the fairways make finding a ball almost impossible. The people running the club house are super friendly. I guess the only down side to playing this course is getting to it, lol. You have to drive on some very narrow roads that have sharp curves that wind all the way back to the top where the golf course is located. Still this is my favorite course of any others within 50 miles of my location. If you love golf as much as I do you owe it to yourself to go try Twisted Gun at least once. Thanks!
