Being newly excavated, we had a chance at unearthing more diamonds in this location versus cracking open the stones. Unfortunately, we stopped in during a mining competition so one mine was pretty much off-limits but we were still able to find a lot of cool diamonds and rocks

We went at a rough time with a brutal heat index but came back with a decent collection of stones. My son wandered and found a few stones loose in the dirt of the mine. Definitely suggest bringing a pop up canopy for shade while mining. The sluicing option (buy a bag, pour in sieve, rinse) produced some great stones and fossils that we can't wait to tumble and polish. Most of the lot is gravel, which makes for difficult terrain for wheelchair users. The beds in the cabin are rough sleeping, especially after a day spent mining. If you can, pack extra padding for a better sleep. Overall, a good experience. We'll be back when the temps aren't so cruel and see what we can get when we aren't risking heat exhaustion to pound rocks.

When he learned that I had been to over 100 of them but hadn't been to Green Lakes he urged me to check that one off the list pronto. And you know how that goes: when someone tells you how great something is, that place suddenly starts popping up more and more in your social feeds. Well, after seeing it featured on the socials for I Love NY and NYS Parks, I finally made the trip to Central New York outside of Syracuse (wait, I can call Syracuse "Central New York" on here, right? :) ), and I was not disappointed at all. My visit was early on an October Saturday, and lots of runners and walkers were around. And a fair amount of ducks too. A mostly level 2.5-mile loop around Green Lake and another mile-ish loop around practically adjacent Round Lake (which is also a Registered National Landmark) made for a wonderful morning stroll. I was just walking and taking pictures, but clearly this is a spot where runners meet and get in a workout together. The lakes are beautiful, and, yeah, have an emerald-green glow at times. I'm really glad I made the trip there, and will definitely revisit one day.

A small lake, no large motorized boats are allowed, so it is quiet and peaceful. In fact, the greatest disturbances tend to be other campers who insist on playing their music loudly. Thankfully, there is usually a good amount of space between sites, and most people respect the quiet hours. While this campground is a long way away from where I live, it is definitely worth the drive. If you are interested in fall camping, I can't even being to describe how beautiful it is to wake up in the morning to see the lake surrounded by a riot of colors.

Located close to Indian Lake, the Lewey Lake Campground has multiple entrances off of Route 30N with the main campground the furthest south and what I have labeled on the Yelp map. Keep in mind that the address does not come up properly on Google Maps or Bing maps so look at the Yelp placement for more accuracy. We were at the furthest north campsites which are pretty isolated from everyone else. The sites our group stayed at were situated right next to a stream which was great for sleeping. You couldn't hear anyone around you and even with the goings on at our lower campsite we couldn't hear them at all. There only outhouses at this location of the campground but it is a short drive to the main sites that have real bathrooms and showers along with a nice, simple beach. Despite how close it is to Route 30N, I definitely felt isolated in a good way and would highly recommend staying there for people looking for some interesting camping with reasonably convenient location.

This review is on our trip in July 2023…read more Our first trip to New York to dig for Herkimer Diamonds was back in 2010. We dug at the Ace of Diamonds mine. Great time & loads of herks to be had. Smashed rocks, sifted through dirt amongst the piles, and walked around plucking them off the ground. We returned multiple times until suddenly the landscape changed and the rock pile was not the same. All there was were rocks from the cliff that the claims people had sheered off to hopefully find pockets in the walls. We find out in our 2021 trip that the Ace of Diamonds is in a lawsuit and it cannot dig up new material/loads of rock and earth from deep in the mine areas to dump for all of the daily customers to prospect. The place is a waste of time and money now. Fast forward to today July 2023 and we see they post that they are able to now dig new material and bring it to the piles. We have high hopes that we will get to enjoy this place once again and head out from mid Ohio to see. Upon arrival the pile does not lie...it tells us that nothing has changed. We buy our wrist bands and ask if they have done as they suggested on their website and added new material. They hedge in their answer and claim that they just cant get any of the machines working...I would suggest that you do not post a promise of new material until you are actually able to do this. Another absolutely sad trip to Ace of Diamonds Mine. I am not sure why anyone would donate to the gofundme. Lesson learned that they are just looking to have people give them money.

It's a beautiful little private island with a pit toilet and fire pit with picnic tables. This year we spent one night at site 26, which was a little too close to other rowdier sites, and one night at 39, which was beautiful and secluded. If you're thinking about camping here but don't have a boat, rent a canoe! It's a nice way to get out to the islands and work up a sweat so you're ready to swim by the time you get to your site. Some words of advice: make sure you text anyone you need to while you're in Speculator or Indian Lake because if you need to get a hold of someone while you're camping you have to row back to shore, which could take hours if your site is further up the lake, then drive into town to get service; bring a roll of toilet paper with you if you don't want to use the cheapo single ply the whole time you're there; and lastly, really look at the map to make sure you know what you're getting into in terms of the trek out to your site! 32 is far enough that it feels remote but not so far you can't canoe there. Much further north and you're looking at hours of paddling. All in all a great spot to get away.
