The Rome Metro, called Metropolitana di Roma in Italian, is the Eternal City's main medium of public transport. It began its operation in 1955, making it the oldest system of its kind in Italy. Seeing as it is quite small, navigating the Rome underground is very straightforward. The main thing to remember is that Roma Termini is the connection point between lines and just about every other transport in the Eternal City. Out of the three lines, only A, which appears red or orange on maps, and B (the blue line) are completed and are the ones that pass through the most landmarks, such as the Vatican Museum, the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps, etc. Line C is a new line gradually being opened in stages. My partner, our friends, family member, and I used it for 2 days during our stay. A single ride costs €1.50 and is valid for 100 minutes on a combination of metro, buses, and trams. But we bought a €12.50 ticket valid for unlimited metro, bus, and train travel within Rome for 48 hours from validation. It was generally clean and safe; keep one's belongings close and watch out for pickpockets (as one should in most major cities), and one should be fine.

The Metro A line in Rome is typically very crowded -- especially at afternoon "rush hour". I find…read moreit to be a necessary evil to move around the heart of Rome. I had my wallet lifted getting on a train at Espagne but gladly got it back after making a scene on the train -- minus about 200€. The perp dropped my wallet rather than being caught with it.

It is seriously deceiving just how massive Stazione Termini is until you are actually inside…read morewalking it. It feels less like a standard train station and more like a mega-mall that happens to have tracks attached. The selection of stores, cafes, and markets here is fantastic--you can easily kill an hour shopping or grabbing a great bite to eat while waiting for a departure. Just a heads-up: give yourself plenty of extra time to reach your train. The platforms here are incredibly long, and if your train is assigned to one of the regional tracks or a high-speed engine waiting far down the line, it can be a massive, unexpected walk to get to your carriage. Keep your eyes on the departure boards and don't linger at the shops too long.

Termini is kind of a mess, it's chaotic and for whatever reason they randomly just shut down access…read moreroutes into or out of the tracks which can cause major bottlenecks. It's super busy but conveniently is very close to a lot of stuff in Rome, so for day trips or if you are staying nearby it's very convenient. This is definitely not my favorite train station but it's also a super useful tool for getting around. Just prepare yourself for a bit of a chaotic arrival and you will be totally fine. The uber pickup area is a little hard to find, through a nondescript hallway, but getting an Uber worked pretty easily for us. In the past I've had no issues getting cabs as well - at least not no more issue than anywhere else in Rome.

If you're thinking about going on a 110 Open hop-on hop-off bus tour of Rome, DON'T DO IT. There…read moreare other hop-on hop-off bus companies that looked much more legit based on the number of stops made and number of people on them. Those people clearly did their research, unlike me who chose 110 Open on a whim. First Problem: The headphone plugs didn't work!! What's the point of going on a bus tour if you can't hear the commentary?! Every once in awhile the sound would pop on and I could hear something, but then a second later the plug would crap out again. It was infuriating! I was on a total of three buses and on one of the buses, the sound didn't work AT ALL. EVER. Second Problem: The seats on most of the buses are made from some sort of metal-like material which makes sitting on them impossible on hot summer days. The first bus I was on had a different material which was more bearable, but the rest were all the hot seats. For 18 Euro I felt like I was completely ripped off.

Since we wanted to sit on the top level so we could see more we wanted. We paid 15 Eruo each for one day of Hop on Hop off. They also provided free head sets so you could listen to the comintary. We moved around a few times as people got off so we could get the best seats. We went around 2 times to see as much as we could. There is so much to see, that once is not enough. It is great to be up top on the bus, becacuse you really see much more than street level. Great way to see certain areas of Rome. Far better than trying to drive yourself. We enjoyed it and did not think it was that much $$. You catch the bus just outside the Termini. Don't buy from the people on the street, they charge you $18.00 and pocket the rest. Go to the Box Office, they are the actual company. Do not get involved with anyone on the street trying to sell you anything with tickets.
