While he is a very knowledgeable doctor and I trust his diagnosis, I agree with Teresa B. that you need to have extreme patience if you come here. A 9:30 appointment got me into the exam room at 10:30 and another 20 minutes before I got examined. I was then asked to wait back in the waiting room (now standing room only) for further tests. After 45 minutes I left. This office obviously overbooks. I value my time and expect to be respected as a customer, which is what I am. If my time is not respected I will find services elsewhere. I've spent many a time waiting at the doctor's office. It can be as pleasant as getting probed by said doctor. I've learned my lesson and usually carry a magazine and/or notebook especially since I don't own a smartphone. Here are my notes from my recent visit to Dr. Tran (expletives removed): 10:30 arrive promptly for appointment. Fill out paperwork. The floor in the walkway is dirty. I know it has recently rained but that clear candy wrapper, hair and dust looks like it's old. This can't be a good sign. 10:45 Lose my seat and move closer to TV and magazines. 2008 Orange Coast doesn't sound appealing. Nov 2010 People en Espanol you're going to be it. 10:50 There are a lot of people in here I hope there is more than one doctor otherwise it's going to be a wait. The movie is starting again. 11:00 I wish the assistants would lower their radio so I can hear UP. Those Pixar people sure are talented. 11:15 45 minutes and I'm still here ----- waiting. 11:30 We are officially at an hour wait and the lady behind me really needs to bathe. 11:40 Bingo! My name is called. I am shuffled to the back. It's a dark room with all the usual eye equipment, it smells clean it's dark so I can't really examine the floor. There is a Mac monitor and computer. I am impressed. 10 minutes pass. No signs of the doctor. Are you kidding? I know patience is a virtue but this is ridiculous. 11:50 He has arrived!!! Doctor: Let me check your vision (Mac turns out to be a fancy eye chart). Me: It still can't keep you on time buddy. Doctor: Let me check your eye glass prescription. It looks good and not too bad. (Insert cheesy grin here) 11:55 Me: What do you mean you're ready to end our appt? Do you think I should try restasis for my dry eyes? Doctor: It takes a while to get used to, so keep using the stuff from Target. I think you should get your eyes dilated but it's really sunny outside so don't think it's the best idea. (Translation: I'm leaving for lunch in an hour and I have about 4 more patients in the waiting room). 12noon 1.5 hours later, $10 copay wasted. I think I'm supposed to make another appointment. I took my grandma here for a cataract consultation and I aside from waiting I was very pleased with the service. I went into the exam room with my grandma to make sure she understood everything and to ask any last minute questions that she may have forgotten about. Dr. Tran was very nice and considerate during the exam process. He was sure to let my grandma know what he was doing before he did anything. For example what drops he was putting in her eyes, when the light was going to get brighter or darker, if something was going to cause discomfort, etc. He knew how to talk to his patient and their family members without sounding condescending. He was also able to make my grandmother feel much more at ease with her upcoming procedure. He was also not pushy at all about scheduling her surgery. He wanted to make sure that we were comfortable and that there was no problem with moving it after we made an appointment that day. Like the other reviews there was a rather long wait (Why I took off one star), We got there about 20 minutes early in order to fill out any paper work since it was our first time there. When we got there a little after 10am on a Thursday and the room was packed. I'm pretty use to waiting a while for eye doctors so I came prepared with my course reader for my class. We didn't get seen till about 11:10 for a 10:30 appointment. *note* Dr. Tran performs surgeries the first and third wed of every month and all of his post operation appoints happen the next day in the morning. So I wouldn't recommend making an appointment then like we did. Wait aside, I feel that he conducted himself very well. I read the other reviews and the low scores were from people that had to wait a LONG time. But that was 2010. The first time I saw Dr Tran in about 2010 was a semi-emergency at about 6PM on Friday. My optometrist wanted an Ophthalmologist to see me right away but it was already closing time for everyone. Everyone except Dr Tran, Dr Tran was willing to wait and see me as a first time patient at about 6:30 and I am thankful to him for that. Over the years I've found Dr Tran to be a very caring and accessible Dr. A few years later, I left an evening message with his answering service and he called me to discuss my bloodshot eye. The doctor is great, but the medical assistants there are problematic. The doctor referred my sister to another ophthalmologist, but it is more than a month and she still does not get her referral authorization. I checked with the insurance and found that they did not send the request to them although the medical assistant said that they submitted it many times. I had cataract removal surgery in my left eye back in December 2013. Dr. Tran is very likeable. He was friendly to me, he laughed when i was being funny and so on. He is very knowledgable about his craft and explained everything he was doing. Very nice guy, he is. His staff was also friendly to me. Most importantly, my cataract is gone!
