I've been going to the Naples TM center since it opened, and went to meetings in Sarasota and Fort Myers before that. People who visit our center say it's one of the nicest they've seen. You feel at peace when you walk in and the people I've met there are great and are now friends. Patti and Marty are amazing teachers and wonderful people and moved here from Iowa to head the center. They're always available to anyone who needs help and have held potluck dinners, eight-week yoga classes, four weekly meetings, advanced classes, and more.
I've been doing Transcendental Meditation since high school and have done other meditations, including the other popular one, Mindfulness, and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. Nothing compares to TM. It's effortless and works -- and that's why some of the world's most successful people credit it with their success. Oprah, Ray Dalio, Seinfeld, Dr. Oz, Arianna Huffington, and numerous celebrities and millionaires are among those who do it. (Just Google and see.)
I could never have lasted through the stress, long hours and deadlines of a journalism career without TM. It gives you focus, calm, and better health. It's the most studied meditation in the world, with more than 700 medical studies, more than 400 of them peer-reviewed. My day is always more efficient when I do TM twice daily. I can feel it if I miss it. When I took it many years ago, my mother, sister and others immediately saw a change. I was more calm, focused and confident.
TM is the best investment I've ever made in my life, so I continue to take advanced classes and go to retreats, which only improves the experience. However, taking TM is really the only thing you need to change your life and find calm and focus. But as someone who took it many years ago and never went to a center for decades, it's worth going to meetings, seeing videos and meditating with others. It's very calming and more powerful.
Some people question the cost and complain, but the teachers get a teacher's salary and the rest goes to education and charitable endeavors, such as volunteering during disasters, helping kids in poor and bad schools, or where bullying is a problem, and helping veterans with PTSD or battered spouses. There are scholarships and veterans and battered spouses are among those who can get them. For everyone else, there's an interest-free payment plan. The fee gives you access to teachers for life.
