I was the least likely candidate for becoming a practitioner of meditation until I came to Harmony…read moreMeditation center. In the old days, five minute relaxation after a vigorous power yoga class felt like an elaborate torture on most days. Even so, I did experience powerful feelings of unity and opennes, albeit rather infrequently - twice in many years of yoga practice. With continuous meditation and Taichi practice, as well as loving and patient guidance of the center manager, grandmaster Johwa, I was able to switch from a judgmental restless mind to deeper and brighter levels of harmony, joy, and peace. Powerful (and gentle) spiritual and energy experiences became a new norm in my life, almost daily. I have finally understood and experienced why meditation is the most direct and effective way to improve quality of life. Just like any new endeavor, in the beginning it may not be easy, but once a habit of deeper breathing and awareness develops, it carries out naturally to all areas of life, making it so much freer and enjoyable.

It was so wonderful to enjoy such a nice meditation. I really enjoy their social media posts of events. That's how I knew. It really is such a beautiful space. And even the main room had beautiful sculptures. I enjoyed a nice cup of coffee and they had veggie food offerings & lots of snacks for this special Meditation event. Yum. I'm happy there so many kind staff members around to answer my questions & even have a lil' tour. They had little booklets to look at to guide you along as the teacher spoke. It was very peaceful, and I felt the weight of the world lifted from my shoulders. Gen Chogyop has a special kind of gentle caring way about her. I really enjoyed this time to meditate. Even though I'm not an expert meditator... I feel wholeheartedly that it went well. I'll definitely come again. I enjoyed the chance to meet the regulars here.

Weekly meditation classes are offered in Millburn, Shrewsbury, Little Silver, Ridgewood, Madison and more. Everyone is welcome! Check out www.meditatenj.org for more information. I originally found this center through a basic Google search, and then learned more about it via the official Facebook page (link: https://www.facebook.com/pg/MeditateNJ/about/?ref=page_internal) This specific location is conveniently located in the Millburn Mall off Vauxhall Road in Union, NJ. It is a small space which has a tiny lobby to take off your shoes, check in and pay any class fees (if applicable). It opens into a larger meditation area with a beautiful Buddhist shrine, chairs and cushions to meditate, books on Kadampa Buddhism (for sale), and a small back area with drinks/snacks and a place for the teacher to organize their things before a meeting/meditation. The interior is minimalist, comfortable, and welcoming. This is a wonderful, safe space to learn about Buddhism and practice meditation with others. I was always interested in Buddhism, but had never meditated before. Since moving nearby a few months ago, I have found a true community within this Center. For $15, you are able to partake in a 90min. meditation class which teaches you about Buddhist tradition and helps walk you through self-guided meditations. At this center, this class is usually held every Thursday from 7pm-830pm. Beginners are welcome, as are continuing members. You can become a member of the temple (for around $700/year) but this is not required to join in on many of the classes and festivities. All participants are also welcome to visit/meditate at the nearby NYC Kadampa Meditation Center, as well as the Kadampa Center upstate in tranquil Glen Spey, NY which hosts a series of wonderful retreats throughout the year. I haven't been yet but am very much looking forward to going. What I love most about Buddhism is that it cultivates knowledge and growth to more deeply understand your mind. I highly encourage anybody remotely interested in Buddhism to visit here.

I can honestly say, I'm thrilled with every aspect of Bhakti Barn! I just signed up to become a monthly member. I'm sure it's challenging to teach to the students in the studio and at home simultaneously. It can be challenging for the student at home too. But I'm learning ways to adapt and it's well worth it!

So much talent!). I have not been to the older Millburn location which is at close proximity but from the looks of the outside, this 2nd Millburn location is much bigger. I've also been to the Glen Ridge location which is gorgeous as well and conveniently located next to Montclair. I do wish the studio was a bit closer to me as I probably would be more of a regular. I found this studio via Groupon and I really enjoy the classes. The instructors are great and the space is very welcoming - colors are so vibrant and the staff members are super friendly. I love that there's always hot tea at this location which you can drink prior/after class (so cozy). They have 2 rooms at this location - the Love room (pink & orange) is the one I took classes and it was very spacious and a smaller blue room. They have many different kinds of yoga classes here (Kundalini, Yin, Restorative, Bhakti & etc) and I often found myself treating myself by taking 2 classes when I had time (on the weekends).

We were looking at a few different towns, but I'm glad we wound up in Summit because I love going to this gym. Pros (which are significant): - Like a typical Equinox, it's large, clean, and well-maintained, with all the usual amenities (including the chilled, eucalyptus-scented towels). They wipe down the mats well in between classes. - It's less crowded than the Manhattan locations I used to frequent. It's unusual to have to wait for equipment or a shower, etc. - The classes are great--and, honestly, the main reason to join Equinox (because if you need just a place to work out, there are cheaper options). I take practically everything (except spinning), and my favorite instructors include Kelsey, Michelle, and Jennifer. (John T. is also very good, but unlike the others, I think he still doesn't know my name, even though I've been doing his classes for years.) Renee does an excellent job overseeing the group-fitness program. - I haven't done much personal training here (it's expensive), but I did have a few good sessions with Marcus (and a friend of mine has been working happily with him for years now). - The Kids Club is a wonderful resource for parents. It's so nice to work out while someone watches your kids. It's $20 for two hours, but that's a bargain given the going rate for babysitting in Summit. - A while back, I complained about the lack of a juice/snack bar. Now they have one, courtesy of Essex Squeeze--and it's great! - I also previously mentioned the lack of built-in combination locks. Now they have them. Possible improvements (some admittedly minor, some not realistic): - I wish they had a larger stretching area or additional stretching areas; the one area they do have can get crowded. - They should check the treadmills more regularly to make sure they're in good working order; too frequently you'll encounter one that wobbles a little or makes weird noises. - A larger pool, heated to a higher temperature, would be nice. - The men's bathroom could use upgrading. There are only two stalls and two urinals. I wish the stall doors were the kind that went down to the floor and indicated whether the stall was occupied. They could also be cleaned more frequently. - I also wish they had some private all-gender bathrooms (like certain other Equinoxes). - Like every Equinox, they need to upgrade their toilet paper (Charmin Ultra Strong is the way to go). - I miss the old Kiehl's products. The Grown Alchemist cleanser doesn't lather or rinse off well, and its lotion doesn't get absorbed easily. (But replacing Kiehl's with Grown Alchemist was a company-wide decision.)

But then I got paired with Emily, and honestly she's the sweetest and most amazing trainer. She made me feel comfortable right away and helped me build my routine from scratch. Even with a couple of bumps at the beginning, I'm really glad I joined. The staff is always friendly and attentive, and overall the experience has been worth it.
