Trattoria Billy might have been one of the best meals we had in Cinque Terre. We were staying in Manarola, just a few minutes walking away from the restaurant, so this ended up being our very first food experience in Cinque Terre-- and what a way to start our stay. It honestly felt magical. The views are spectacular, with that elevated perspective overlooking the colorful village of Manarola, the vineyards, and the Ligurian Sea. But as beautiful as the setting is, the food really stood on its own. The menu is mainly seafood, and we decided to go all in with an appetizer made up of lots little plates, each offering a different seafood preparation and flavor. There were so many tings to try, and for two serious foodies like us, it was such a fun and enjoyable way to start the meal. Everything felt fresh, interesting, and beautifully prepared. Service was equally impressive: attentive and genuinely friendly, but also knowledgeable. Our server was able to guide us through the menu, making the experience feel casual and easy going. Overall, we had a mixed experience. The servers were excellent--friendly, welcoming, and attentive. They spoke English, Italian, and Spanish fluently, which made communication very easy and enjoyable. They were definitely the highlight of our visit. The food was good, but not outstanding. The view is beautiful, although after dining at another restaurant in Vernazza, we felt that both the food and the scenery there were even better in Vernazza. Unfortunately, our experience started on a negative note. The person who handled our reservation over the phone made a mistake with our booking. Instead of acknowledging the error, he blamed us, argued with us, and never apologized. Trattoria del Billy has a beautiful sunset view, even if we didn't get seated in a spot where we could actually enjoy it. Definitely make a reservation a couple of days ahead because they book up fast, and the place is popular with visitors who swear it's the best in Manarola. That said, the service was rough. The staff felt inattentive, and even when I was ready to pay, it took forever just to get the bill. They never came back to collect the payment, so I had to walk up to the register myself... and still wait for someone to take it. And honestly, they weren't even busy. The food itself was good, though not the best I've had in Manarola. The grilled sardines (five pieces) were tasty with bread. The seafood spaghetti, frutti di mare, was excellent with a solid portion size. The "giant" grilled prawns were flavorful but definitely not giant; you'll still be hungry unless you order something else. The grilled vegetables were a bit soggy and underwhelming. While we were staying in Manarola, several people told us we had to eat here and that it was the best food in the village. We stopped in to make a reservation for the following evening. When we arrived for the reservation, the staff seemed very annoyed. Our server was also unfriendly. We ordered the tuna, the prawns, grilled vegetables, and panna cotta for dessert. The grilled vegetables were an incredibly small portion, not dissimilar to what we found in other areas of Italy. The proteins were both fine, but nothing special -- no sauces, accompaniments, etc. Panna cotta was disappointing. We were still hungry but decided to go elsewhere afterwards to fill up, rather than order more here. This was one of the most expensive meals of our Italy trip, and probably in the lower third of food, and bottom tier of service. We had a late reservation, but I assume it's pretty cool to take in the views while it is still light out and/or when sun is setting. read more

This restaurant was quite a hike up but if you're after a good view, the views are worth it. We picked a spot on the upper level so we could admire the beautiful scenery. The food was just so-so. I was honestly expecting much better given some of the reviews I read online. We had the truffle pasta and pasta with clams which were alright. No one believes in leafy greens in this part of the world haha - carrots, potatoes, asparagus are more common. We tried to order a salad and used olive oil and balsamic as dressing but honestly the vegetables used weren't well cleaned and didn't seem fresh. We went here the day we arrived in Manarola. We were a bit late for dinner and were hunting for a nice dinner place with a view. Most of the places were closed or about to get closed but we were lucky to meet a couple of people on our way who recommended this place. It is located high up on the hill so you have to take a bunch of stairs to get here but the view is so worth the effort. Their food is outstanding - especially their Spaghetti and Tiramisu. My favorite meal in Cinque Terre! We made a dinner reservation and were seated at the patio with a gorgeous sunset view of Manarola. We enjoyed everything that we ordered, their seafood all tasted fresh and delicious. The workers were all friendly and it was easy to communicate with them in English. We started off with a glass aperol spritz, a popular Italian wind cocktail which was a great refreshment. For appetizers, we got the tuna tartar and octopus salad. The tuna tartar was the daily special and came with a side of pomegranate, adding a sweet and tart flavor. The octopus salad includes potatoes and tasted excellent as well. As for our main entree, I happily enjoyed the squid ink pasta with seafood, it came with a generous portion of clams, mussels, shrimp, and crab legs (2 portions order). Each bite was delicious and I couldn't stop eating more, the portions were huge and I was stuffed by the end of the meal. In terms of food, service, and ambience, this was the best dining experience during my Italy trip. The seafood was fresh and the view of Manarola and the Mediterranean Sea was fantastic. Everything was delicious, the server was attentive, the guests nearby were having a party, and the view was spectacular! My wife and I don't really enjoy fish, but we even liked the local-caught sea bass: Fresh, flaky, tender, and mild but with a nice flavor (most fish is too bland for me). Regarding the speed of service, it is an *Italian* restaurant (in Italy, obviously), so expect it to go more slowly and enjoy the leisurely pace. Also, the house wine (white and red) is delicious. This restaurant is located up above the main town of Manarola, but it is worth the hike to get up there for the views and food. Tagliatelle with clams and salted fish eggs (€19) - Very tasty al dente pasta. Plentiful clams. The salted fish eggs acted as more of a salty seasoning. Stuffed mussels (€17) - I had personally not had this before, but it was pretty good, as it seemed they sort of breaded the mussels inside so that they were "stuffed". This is more of an appetizer than a main course though. Lemon cream with cherries in syrup (€8) - A bit too sweet for my liking, but still not bad at all. The cherry syrup was kind of sugary but the lemon cream was delicious. Note that when we came at 7pm, we were able to get one of the last available tables, but shortly thereafter, anyone else who came either was not able to get a table or had to wait in a line. As mentioned, the restaurant is up on one of the cliffs overlooking the town and water, so there are some great views, depending on which table you get (we got lucky). The staff were very friendly and the service speed was pretty fast. Overall, Trattoria dal Billy is a great choice for an Italian meal in Manarola if you don't mind a bit of a hike up - just try to get there no later than 7pm if you can to avoid any wait times. read more

We showed up without a reservation right around sunset on a Friday night and they sat us within minutes. We had such a beautiful view of the ocean. Eating here was perfect. The aperol spritz was very strong according to my friend. I had the limoncello spritz, which they made for me even though it wasn't on the menu. The bread starter was so light and fluffy. A cold front came in and they put plastic down so it was not so cold . Took a bit of the vibe away but we didn't have to wear a coat. We were seated at a terrace side table. As there are several tiers to this restaurant, there are many lovely views. I chose the tagliolini pomodoro. I was trying to find something a little smaller and lighter. Husband chose the fish of the day. Imagine our surprise when they brought a huge tray of gutted, raw, whole fish to us. I ordered taglierini al pomodoro and it was fine, but now I regret not having a baked potato just to see what one would taste like in Italy. I recommend people come here for the view a little more than for the food. My friend noted that she had eaten better shrimp. We made a reservation the night before and we got a table inside at a window, but only one of us could see out the window. I recommend you make a reservation a few days in advance at least. Lucky to get a reservation the morning of. Book early if you can. We sat up top, really outside of the restaurant but happy to be there. Earlier booking will get you a table outside, but inside the restaurant with breathtaking views. We started with the tuna tartar and then shared the lobster pasta house special. The starter was refreshing, though a little undressed for my taste. We had high hopes for the house special lobster pasta. The dish was GIGANTIC. The picture does not do it justice as there was a lobster tail and 2 claws under all of that pasta. The lobster itself was delicious. The pasta, homemade, was a little heavy and thick, which overall made the dish feel heavy. I would not order it again on a return. We ordered the cheese to finish. Arguably one of the most beautiful sunset spots in Cinque Terra is Manarola from Punta Bonfiglio. The way the sunsets highlights the bright beautiful colors of the village is undeniable. Therefore, prior to one of these amazing sunsets we decided to have dinner at one of the best reviewed restaurants in Manarola, Trattoria dal Billy. It is quite a small space that basically has tiers off the side of a cliff. With the limited space, I would recommend calling ahead to make a reservation. (Having a concierge service with a credit card would be preferable!) After having a pretty heavy lunch, we decided we would go a little light ordering three dishes to share: the tagliolini dal billy, stuffed mussels, and tiramisu. Tagliolini dal billy - The restaurant's signature pasta dish that is a tomato based with shellfish. It was the perfect tanginess with a bit of spice from the peppers and shellfish that made for a solid pasta dish. Stuffed Mussels - Mussels filled with a stuffing that was a little bland that pretty much got most of its flavor from the tomato broth it was cooked in. I would probably pass on these. Tiramisu - simple but well executed. the mascarpone cream was well whipped to a fluffy texture that was just slightly sweet with just enough punch of coffee flavors to provide that needed bitterness. The service was pretty attentive. People talk about the nice view from this restaurant but the sun does seem to hit in the direction of the restaurant so it can be distracting for awhile. I would probably instead recommend eating dinner early to catch the sunset at Punta Bonfiglio which is about a ten minute walk. Overall, I would recommend Trattoria dal Billy as a dinner spot in Manarola but no need to book here for the views! read more

Our Airbnb host told us that if we had to pick one place to eat in all of Cinque Terre, this was the place to choose. Tucked away up high in Manarola (many stairs to get there!), this restaurant is known for its delicious food and beautiful view. We got there after sunset so weren't able to catch the views. There was a line when we got there. The owner was very busy with phone calls and checking in with the kitchen, but he took the time to give everyone a glass wine and an appetizer while we waited (which honestly wasn't very long for what I was expecting!). The service was great, and they were very understanding when my sister and I wanted to split an entree rather than get two (so glad we did because I wouldn't have been able to finish my own!). We got the Trofie Pesto and were pleased with how it turned out. We also got tiramisu to share, and it honestly was the best tiramisu I have ever had. Had to wait a few minutes to be seated as it was pretty busy. The restaurant rests cliff side across multiple floors and we were seated with a nice view into the night sky. During the day I imagine seeing the beautiful hilly terrain. Trattoria dal Billy is known for their seafood but we'd had a lot that day so opted for Trofie Pesto and a pasta with Billy's signature sauce (red-based with seafood). Honestly a bit disappointing. Perhaps because we didn't order their more signature seafood dishes but their pesto dish was bland and needed more pesto and their seafood-based red sauce was okay.
