We came here after we had already enjoyed the sunset at Neesun Dorma, so it was already pretty dark outside when we went to eat dinner. Definitely try to make a reservation before coming here, especially during prime hours in high tourism season (summer). I got the fried calamari and prawns dish which was perfectly cooked! Be sure to get a reservation and be prepared for a hike up many steps to get there. I was really looking forward to this restaurant since it was based off a local's suggestion, but I just didn't feel it lived up to the hype. Rather small restaurant that was cramped inside (very few tables outside with a view) but was conveniently located next to our hotel. The hike up the mountain to get here is difficult, and it is a little hard to find, even with GPS. We ordered the 12 seafood sampler for an appetizer- a solid sample of several types of fish, none of which stuck out to my spouse and I as anything special. Not "bad", just not memorable. For dinner we had the lobster pappardelle pasta. Both the lobster and pasta were cooked and seasoned perfectly- I think it would've been a better dish if the lobster was cooked separately from the pasta (possibly less tiny shells in it). Not sure I would return here- but if I did, I would definitely get the lobster (or crab) papardelle again. read more

Waiting isn't horrible... while we were in line to get in for our reservation, the staff poured us glasses of prosecco. :) A MUST: get the antipasti dish that is a taster of about 12 different things. Most of them tasted fantastic and even the ones you don't like, you only have a bite or two of them. This is a great way to sample the local cuisine. The lobster pasta, one of their signature dishes, was disappointing - super salty and unflavorful - though the lobster was cooked well. They have some tables with a view and some inside. We sat on the lower level outside, which had a nice view of the water but soon grew dark with just a pitch black view. We had an unfortunate experience at Trattoria dal Billy. It's disappointing since my family has been going here for years, and they were very excited for our dinner here. The actual dinner and view was good, though the service we received there was hostile from them start. They asked what we wanted to eat within 3 minutes of sitting down and multiple times there after within the first 7 minutes. We were respectful and tried to make the most of it. But we left sunglasses there and called within 15 minutes of departing. The person who answered the phone said it was Walmart and hung up 3 times. On the 4th try, we finally got somewhere and they found the sunglasses. He said he had the sunglasses in his hand. Then, he said my voice was sweet and he'll "remember my sweet voice and that they would be in his room". He wanted me to come get the sunglasses and come to his room he repeated. It was creepy, rude, and completely uncalled for. I'm in the service industry in a tourist area of America, so I understand the stresses and work fatigue of dealing with tourists, but this was unacceptable and completely uncalled for. I asked for management so I didn't have to resort to an online post, as I never do this. But the entire experience made me feel icky and disrespected. I hope this reached the appropriate party as we lost a $300 pair of sunglasses, spent $150 on dinner, and had the worst dining experience and hospitality I've ever experienced. I'm in awe that this actually happened and this should never happen to anyone. Especially kind, respectful tenants of their restaurant looking to have a nice meal with a loved one. Reservations are a must! We stopped by on a Friday and were able to secure reservations at 915pm the next day. Come Saturday, it was storming! We initially were supposed to be seated outside where there was limited overhead protection, but the server sensed our disappointment and switched our table with one downstairs on their covered patio (sorry, poor saps who arrived later than us and were seated at that original table). We ordered the appetizer sampler for 2 and the squid ink pasta for 2. We were about to order another main or two and the server said "not today"...implying we ordered enough already. We appreciated after the fact, when more than half of our pasta was left untouched. Get the sampler! It was a really good way to try out a lot of different seafood in preparations I would never have imagined (ie. fish with cherries?). I wish they would have a little printed menu of this so you would know what you're eating because they go over it really fast when they serve it and that's it. Pass on the squid ink pasta. You're forced to order it for 2 people (this dish was HUGE), and it was nothing to write home about. In retrospect, we wished we would have ordered a couple of fresh local seafood mains to share. It was dark and stormy so we did not enjoy any sort of view. Our server was funny and attentive. We would definitely come again, but would change up our ordering a bit. read more

We had an amazing dinner here. We got the mixed fish starter, which was incredible -- 12 small plates with different types of seafood, for 16 euros per person. (In the US, I can't imagine that this would've been less than $50, at a minimum.) That was followed by the pasta with clams and bottarga, and a special pasta with swordfish and truffles, both of which we loved, although we were already somewhat full from the appetizer, and the pasta portions were huge. Overall, a great experience -- you definitely get more than your money's worth, both in terms of quality and volume. This place was fantastic! It's sort of set up with little terraces stepped into the hillside, the way everything else is in Cinque Terre. It has amazing views, my wife and I had dinner while watching the sunset. The service was top-notch. We had anchovies two ways, which were great and a tomato salad, which was also great. For dinner I had a homemade pasta with seafood, and my wife had homemade pasta with a spicy red sauce. Both were out of this world. We topped it off with a tiramisu which was also great. Really difficult to find, but worth it, including the sweat from hiking up the small hill. Best seats are in the top portion of the restaurant next to the windows, with an unobstructed view of the water. Patio seating was a bit stuffy, and the railing was a little high to truly enjoy the stunning scenery. We had to try to trofie with pesto, potato and green bean of course (typical ligurian pasta dish of the region) which was tasty and fresh. However my favorites dishes were the anchovies marinated in lemon (so good!!!! Especially if you enjoy saltier fish such as mackerel and getting) and the mussels (I ordered the marinara mussels but they came out with a white wine sauce instead which was delicious). I didn't enjoy my tomato-based pasta with shrimp as much (it was named after the restaurant so I figured it would be a signature dish, but was pretty unmemorable.) People at the other tables had ordered the whole grilled fish with potatoes and were raving about it, so I would also probably choose that if I went back and wanted more seafood. read more

I felt like we were very lucky to be seated on the terrace in lieu......phenomenal view! Repeat phenom vista! Be sure to book a table in advance this place is popular as it is super affordable.. We had a bottle of house white wine, a bottle of fizzy H2O, the mussle appetizer, day special (taglitell/swordfish, topped with shaved truffle), pesto pasta, grilled prawns, side of grilled vegetables, and lemon cello. Every dish was minimum 7 out of 10. We were OTD at €88. We could have gotten sparkling water and the two pasta dishes for less than half and been very satisfied, but......you know...you can't take it with you... just ask all the dead Egyptians..... The Server was very attentive, great sense of humor, brought hand towelettes after mussle dish, offered lite friendly jovial demeanor throughout. Note they offer 5pm 7pm and 9pm seatings. So during busy times, if you have the earlier reservation you must be finished to allow for the next party. My regret not taking photos to share....srry yelpers it looked so good....I forgot. Trattoria dal Billy deserves 10 stars out of 5. I am not even kidding. Their food, location and service are off the charts. They served me the best meal I had in Italy and it was an unforgettable and fulfilling (and filling) experience. The fact that we had to hike up the hills of Manarola a bit to get to this restaurant was a huge plus because it really got our appetites going. We were directed to a table for two right outside the kitchen, a bit cramped, but with the best view. Our waiter was quick, genuinely friendly like the many locals we've encountered, and gave us good recommendations on food and wine. We ordered the octopus and potato salad along with the amberjack carpaccio, both of which were on point in terms of taste and freshness. Before I forget, the bread was also uh-mazing! We did not leave a single crumb and licked the plates for the appetizers clean. We followed the starters with the squid ink pasta for 2. The pasta was al dente and the dish was packed with shellfish, its aroma and natural tastes. It was a generous portion, so it really filled us up, but it was so delicious we devoured everything. Even then, we wanted to end the night with a complete meal and shared a tiramisu, which was one of the best I've had in my lifetime. It was cold, with creamy mascarpone cheese, the perfect moist to the lady fingers and right amount of coffee. Honestly this place to me was extremely overrated. It doesn't help that I also ended up getting a bout of food poisoning from a clam pasta dish. The antipasto di mare was actually very delicious, not a bad one there. Dish after dish of fresh seafood in various forms such as a fish cake, smoked salmon, preserved fish in lemon oil or topped with pomegranate seeds, marinated octopus, and more. The star of this course was a bowl of beautiful steamed clams that were so tasty I decided to order a clam pasta for my main. If I had stopped with the antipastos, this would be a very different review. Right away I saw that the clams on my pasta were completely different, shrivelled up and the shell was wide open and flimsy looking. The waiter insisted that these were the exact same clams as in the antipasto but anyone with eyes would disagree. All of the clams were crunchy to the bite with sand and the pasta itself was underseasoned. During the night and the entire next day I experienced food poisoning from this dish (I know because my husband was fine and he had a different main only). read more

It's true this place is the bees knees. Or whatever you call it. The best! For all the reasons! It's hidden and up a lot of steps, which makes it fun and exciting to get to and beautifully tucked away and on a hill and so lovely and special. All the good words. And the food. Oh the food! It's just soooo goood!!!! Well first of all you can sit multiple places and we chose the patio area down the steps that overlooks the beautiful town. The weather hadn't been great so it was covered, but we still had a nice view despite the water droplets! We ordered the tuna carpaccio as a starter and shared the crab pasta for 2 as an entree. The tuna was delicious and light and melt in your mouth amazing. Even the two little crackers with it were the perfect combo of crunch and salty and just so delicious. The crab pasta was absolutely delicious. I will admit though, the crab was a bit terrifying and super difficult to take apart. I don't think anyone could have done it easily, but we still had fun. The pasta texture and flavour was some of the best I've ever had and the crab and sauce was so delicious I can't even describe it. We visited Cinque Terre in November when most of the restaurants were unfortunately closed for the season. After a loooooonnnnnng hike up what felt like a million stairs to get to our hotel, we were happy to find that Dal Billy was just steps away from our hotel and didn't require us to go up and down more stairs. The waiters were all very friendly and gave us a few suggestions. + Tuna Carpaccio - 10/10 - this was a fresh, light change from all the heavy carbs we had been eating during the trip. The fish was very fresh. + Seafood Pasta - 10/10 - the sauce in this was SO GOOD! The pasta was full of delicious seafood. + Ahi Tuna Steak - 7.5/10 - I wish this came with a sauce of sorts. It felt a little bland but was cooked perfectly. + Grilled King Prawns - 8/10 - my fiancé enjoyed this a lot. + Pana Cotta - 10/10 - AMAZING!!! I'm not a big berry person but the sauce was delicious!! If you want to have dinner here, make reservations super early. We came in for lunch and things were pretty decent. I do think that the food in the busy part of town is comparable. Atmosphere: there's indoor and outdoor seating. it's recommended that you make a reservation especially for outdoor seating because they are always busy. Here's my issue with restaurants that have jaw-dropping views, the price of that view is included in the food. Now when you don't have that view, such as if you don't reserve early enough or you're eating dinner when it's pitch black out, then you'd at least expect the food to be stellar, otherwise, you'd feel cheated out. Well, I felt cheated out. I saw the views that everyone was posting on their reviews, and they are gorgeous. But I'm here to talk about the food. I got the mixed sea food appetizer which is about 10-12 different plates of small portions. This is a fantastic option if you are with another person. Great price, although the food itself was ok. Not bad, not delicious, just ok. All in all, I only enjoyed 3 out of the 11 dishes. For the main, I split the mixed seafood pasta. The pasta itself was well cooked but the proteins were underwhelming. There was one shrimp and a handful of other small seafood. Some of the mussel and clam shells weren't even open. The crawfish was so tiny and overcooked that it shredded from trying to get the meat. Now the taste is, again, ok. Nothing that I would come back for. Worth every step I climb to get there and thank god for the steps down to work off the ridiculous amount of food I ate. We went with the special of the night a crab and pasta for two. Upon ordering it the waiter, and I am pretty sure namesake of the place said (and please use an Italian accent when you read this) "Prego, now excuse me I have to go kill the animal, it is how you say...rather large" Well I could have forked over all my money right then because that moment was worth it but thankfully I stayed and I ate, and I ate, and I ate. VISITING CINQUE TERRE, ITALY (MANOROLA) Our hotel landed us a late night reservation. I love the fact that Italians are late night eaters. That's just my style! Feels a bit like a New York restaurant the way the staff run around and scream their orders - straight, no nonsense here. If you ask "what's good", the hands go up in the air almost like they're mad at you and say, "what, everything's good!" You end up feeling bad, so just order what you feel like eating. :) It's hard to get a personal opinion out of an Italian waiter I found! Well, I definitely won't give you a have time if you're asking my opinion, that's for sure. Here's what we ended up eating: LOBSTER PASTA SPECIAL FOR TWO (3.5/5) I was raised in an Italian family with phenomenal food. My Italian Aunty Connie set the world record (in my experience) for Best Stuffed Lobster ever. I grew up eating Lobster on the East Coast, so I'm a strict judge when it comes to lobster, in particular, when it comes to lobster Italian-style. That said, this lobster and pasta dish came off pretty good. I wasn't a huge fan of the kind of pasta they used (Tagliatelle), I would have preferred spaghetti. Also, pasta doesn't have to be hand made for me (over-rated for me), store bought pasta is completely fine, if not preferred! The lobster was decent, but slightly tough and not very sweet. Again, spoiled with Maine lobster growing up in Boston. I wouldn't order this again, but someone else less picky than me, might enjoy this dish just fine, so take my criticism as you will. PESTO PASTA W/POTATO & GREEN BEANS (4/5) My wife's dish. They say that pesto originated from this area, so the pressure was on for this dish to be good. I liked the pesto, it was that rich, dark green. The dish struck me as rustic, comfort food. ANCHOVIES IN LEMON (5/5) My, my, my...what do we have here? I have been waiting to try anchovies in this part of the world, where they say they are the best. I'm used to the over-salted, canned variety that we have back in the States - not these fresh, white, meaty creatures! These were so good, that I wish they were my main, and I wish they would have offered them in a barrel-sized container. LOVED them. I'm not sure I'll get these again (we're in Rome now and they have disappeared off the menus!) The freshness of the sardine and the bite of the olive oil w/ the lemon was like a refreshing punch in the face (hello oxymoron). CALAMARI (4/5) We've had better, but really, how bad could calamari be coming out of this kitchen in an Italian fishing village? It comes down to the batter and how long you fry it. Could have been more tender. If I could go back, I'd try the white fish, I think it's Branzino?? It looked like their specialty because it was coming to a lot of the tables around us. Given the high ratings, I was excited we secured a reservation for a table on the patio, although it required 3 attempts. Both the first and second time I called, someone picked up on the other end, but they seem to have a "dedicated" person who takes reservations and kept asking me to call back later. It was a bit frustrating given that I had to incur long distance charges. With the nicer views, the restaurant is located higher up on the hills, so be prepared for a mini pre-dinner workout. The outside seating area was small and fully covered by retractable awnings. There were about 7 tables in total, so if this place is on your list, making a reso is a good idea. We sat in the back row, so our view was slightly obstructed, but we were still able to enjoy the sunset view. We ordered a half bottle of local white wine (10 euros). I enjoyed it as it was crisp and delicate. Onto the food, we went for the squid ink pasta (13 euros per order), which required a minimum of 2 orders and a side of grilled vegetables. The squid ink pasta was a huge disappointment. The pasta was not al dente, (I think this was our first experience in Italy with less than perfect pasta), the seafood was way overcooked, and some of the prawns were not fresh. Worst of all? There were broken shells and bits of sand residue buried within the pasta. Compared to another restaurant we visited in Manarola, this restaurant definitely used subpar ingredients. Flavourwise, we could only taste the garlic infused in the oil, which completely overpowered the fresh ocean flavours. We were so disappointed with the food we decided against ordering dessert. I don't know if this is a fair review since my husband is not a big fan of fish, so we didn't order some of their other popular dishes that other reviewers mentioned. However, based on the quality of the seafood and the pasta itself, there are definitely better options in Cinque Terre. The 2 stars is more for the view and relatively fair prices. read more

I appreciated his question from the beginning: did we prefer to speak in English, Italian or French? He obviously knew we were English-speaking tourists but did not make the assumption that all we knew was English. The food at Billy's was great: - Tuna carpaccio: This was my first time eating this dish, and I thought it was so simple but so lovely. It sort of reminded me of an Italian version of sashimi. - Fish special: Husband ordered this and got a fish with funny-looking teeth smiling at him! He enjoyed the fish. This fish was very light and buttery/sweet in flavor. The steamed potatoes on the side were soft and fantastic. - Stuffed mussels: I literally felt sad once I ate the last one! The stuffing was creamy and full of flavor. - Tiramisu: Yummy, yummy! Well-made and very coffee-tasting. - Digestiv: The limoncino was delicious and enjoyable. The sambuca? Well, it could have lit the entire town of Manarola on fire. I must note, though, that we requested "outside" seating when we made our reservation. When we were seated that evening, we were seated in a patio area that had removable window panels that were all in place even though the temperature was about 70 degrees outside. Matching the sheer beauty of Cinque Terra in fine cuisine is the definition of a tall order. Most of their tables overlook the breathtaking municipality of Manarola, and the seafood I had there was among the best I've ever had. We had the mussels in garlic and parsley to start, and the mixed grilled seafood as our main, and never have I had something that is altogether as primal as it is classy.
