Our visit to Cinque Terre was short, just one afternoon and night, that's all it took to walk through the five towns... we didn't do extensive hikes. We stayed in Manarola. Our dinner that evening was at La Scogliera and was wonderful! We ordered Seafood Salad, Fish Ravioli, Pesto Ravioli and a lot of wine. The flavors in each dish were wonderful... even excellent. The menu was large, choosing was difficult but our choices made us very happy. The staff was friendly and accommodating seating us without a reservation. I thought you couldn't find bad food in Italy. After going to this place on a recent trip, sadly, I now know that is not true. We got off a ferry from another of the five cities and saw this pleasant looking place with friendly staff advertising air conditioning as we walked by in the sweltering heat, and we decided to give it a shot. My wife wanted seafood, so ordered the grilled shrimp - order was 5, she got through 2. My daughter's a seafood lover so she tried one and couldn't even swallow the bite. One of my other children ordered the lasagna, which was Ok but clearly reheated and not evenly; it also had a really thick, unappealing layer of bechamel sauce, but it was by far the best thing we ordered. My other daughter and I both wanted something simple that we figured they couldn't mess up - spaghetti with meat sauce. Each of us could only stomach a couple bites. It was soggy, overcooked boxed pasta with sauce that was no better than Prego from a bottle. I honestly would have greatly preferred unlimited salad and breadsticks from Olive Garden. My entire family decided to just scrap the whole meal and get something else later. 90 euros wasted (oh yeah, it was not cheap either). (What we found later was a delicious cone of fried seafood and vegetables and a lemon-mango granita; I'll write up those in other reviews) One plus - the bathroom was clean and had a toilet seat. Nice air condition restaurant right as you come into Manarola. The food is hit or miss. I must say the lasagna was extremely delicious and some of best in Cinque Terre. The ravioli we got was a little cold. The staff was very pleasant and kind. read more

Another spot where the workers hate tourists and we felt the poor service here. We get seated and 15 mins go by... no server has come up to us yet. We call over a server to finally ask for water and we had to wait another 10 mins for the water so we had to ask AGAIN! It was quite outrageous. The servers felt like they hated their work there and did not care for good customer service. Besides that, we were shooing off a bunch of flies indoors. The food was really bad and I mean bad. I could get better food from the frozen section of my grocery store!!! And to top it off, we had to pay an extra 2.50/person for a VERY odd service fee that charged us for them switching out utensils and a throwaway paper table mat. This is charged to all customers. I came here for dinner it was delight. Their food is delicious! My appetizer was fried calamari. It had no breading, but I really tasted the calamari. My main course was seafood spaghetti. It was so delicious and the seafood was fresh. Lastly, for dessert, I had the tiramisu. It was light and creamy. The service was outstanding. The wait staff was so attentive. Sadly, this was the worst food we've had on our Italy trip. Spent a few days in Manarola, and this place was always busy, so it seemed like a safe choice. The staff were all very friendly, and the environment was nice. They give free bread. However, the lasagna bolognese and spaghetti bolognese left much to be desired. Pasta wasn't fresh. Sauce was VERY American and bland. Maybe they're just trying to please the tourists? I'm not sure, but there are several place in Seattle that serve better pasta! read more

We were lucky to find this place while in Riomaggiore! Service was excellent! When we went in the second time they brought us complimentary wine. We actually don't drink but it was a lovely gesture. In the US, we usually have trouble finding good italian food without eggs. But, here we had no issues. We got spaghetti with marinara sauce, gnocchi pesto, bruschetta, french fries and pannacotta. I gave them a second star out of pity for them being severely under staffed. We waited over an hour for a table outside, with no communication from the staff. We watched groups of tables leave and tables sit empty inside. Groups of people who came after us were seated before us, even larger groups (4-6 people, while we were a group of 3). Once we finally got a table we advised them that we were ready to order right away, and they ignored us for the next 20 minutes before finally tending to our table. We ordered calamari, pesto pasta, lobster spaghetti and speck pizza. The pizza was probably the best of them, but most of it was severely underwhelming. In contrast to the wonderful service we received in Monterosso, Manarola was a significant step down. I enjoyed the food at La Scogliera. I had their local (trofie) pasta with pesto and thought it was great. I also loved my white wine, made from the local green grapes. But our server seemed like she hated her life. It was Daria-level angst. She spent most of our meal AWOL, so we got no love when it was time for more water. (We just hiked a freakin' mountain, lady. Bring the acqua!) If you head to the bathroom, be forewarned that the only way to turn on the faucet is by stepping on a pedal near the floor. Too many tourists fought for limited restaurant seats around lunch time that we finally found this restaurant have a table just vacated. Since the business was too busy, couldn't expect any personal touch in service. Grilled sea bass was below our expectation considering this was a no frill dish; our conclusion was the fish might not the best, freshest to begin with. After catching an early train to Riomaggiore and then going to Manarola, my wife and I were hungry after a day of touristing under the hot Italian sun. La Scogliera is located in between the water and the central piazza there, and had an inviting patio that lured us in. I ordered their grilled veggie plate for us to share, then their linguine with mussels and clams for myself, as well as a beer to help cool down. Bread came out first, and this was one of the few places that gave oil and balsamic with it, although we had to use what was presumably a shallow bowl for my shells, as a dipping plate. The grilled veggies arrived at the same time as the rest of our food, unfortunately, so things were a bit crowded. The zucchini was nice, but the somewhat thin slices of eggplant just ended up being a bit chewy. The clams in my linguine were small, but cooked just right. The mussels varied in size, and were also cooked perfectly. The sauce had just a little bit of spice to it, which was nice, but I would have preferred a cream-based sauce rather than oil/wine, as the pool in the bottom of the plate wasn't too appealing. The pasta itself was fine, just not up to par with some of the fresh trofie I had been having elsewhere in Cinque Terre. The options on the menu are good, but some of the dishes need a little more thought and refined execution to allow them to reach their potential. read more

I got the lobster spaghetti and it was to die for. My mom got the octopus spicy pasta and she couldn't decide if she liked mine better or hers...I think she settled on hers. Not sure why there are negative reviews about this place. We dined twice in one week and had no issues with wait times, service, or quality of the food. Generous portions, delicious pizza and lasagna and great service await you here. One big positive for us was the fact that you could order Italian dishes that weren't centered around seafood. Staying a week in Cinque Terre, you cannot eat seafood at every meal and we were so grateful for the variety available on the menu. Highly recommend. read more

The pasta here was reasonably priced (about 8 euro for a bowl of pasta with meat sauce), but wasn't the greatest pasta. It didn't taste like the pasta was made fresh here, and the pasta sauce was good but not great. The food did come with a bread basket which was nice! We were able to sit outside and had a nice view of Manarola. There is also a 2.50 per person euro charge for eating in the restaurant. Also, I have a tree nut allergy and they were accommodating and understood my allergy. Overall would maybe recommend, but there's tons of restaurants in Manarola so look around for others! read more

In short, my advice is to skip Trattoria La Scogliera. Though the service is friendly, it is also disturbingly quick. In fact, I wonder if any of the food is prepared fresh to order. My guess is that the owner/kitchen staff has grown complacent from catering to tourists and has therefore let food quality slip. The pesto gnocchi was bland. The meat lasagne was so-so at best and the fried mixed seafood platter was oily and somewhat tasteless. The chocolate moose, which is homemade according to the menu, tasted like Jell-O instant pudding. Sadly enough, for me, this may have been the highlight of the meal. The local white wine from Manarola was pretty good but can probably be had at a better restaurant. At the same time, all the servers seamed to be working hard to satisfy guests as best they could. read more

The first waitress we received was very attentive but sadly we were passed into a lady who could hardly speak English. We tried our very best to speak the little Italian we knew obviously understanding we were in Italy but in vain. Our first meal came out which was wrong and we couldn't explain what it is we wanted. After sorting that we eventually got what we ordered. We ordered the grilled octopus to start, which was nice but very bland. We then moved onto our main course which was lobster spaghetti and the other sea bass ravioli. Fast service. Great food at nice price. Daughter had sand lobster which was tasty. I had the pesto pizza which I expected to have a drizzle of pesto.
