There was a line before opening at 7pm. We were lucky to get a table without reservation. People showed up arpund 7:30pm had to wait for a table. The service by our waiter was very good, though I was charged 9 euro for a side salad (very plain) that was supposed to come with my milanese cutlet. I am not sure if it was the langauge barrier or purposely misleading. I understand this place has a history for being around for a while, however I thought it was overhyped. Had dinner this evening. Really very good straight forward Milanese food. We did not have a reservation. Could not get through on the phone. We walked over from the Hotel. The gentleman that ran the front end was great. He asked that we might finish or dinner within 2 hours. And bingo! We were seated. Very nice waiter. So this place I stumbled upon by accident. As a result, I didn't have reservations and when I first went in they told me it's one hour wait to discourage me from waiting. I saw several packs of tourists coming in and some were turned away but others were sat down much sooner than the quoted wait time. I, myself waited about 30 minutes. However they do pack different groups of walk-ins in big tables but I'm still glad they try rather than completely turn you away. The food is decent. I tried the minestrone which is basically a light soup with veggies and pasta. It's slightly salty and blend the same time but I guess that's the point. Their costolleta is quite expensive compared to another costolleta restaurant that specializes in it. The meat is fairly delicious and I think they did a good job. It's however huge but what puzzles me is the color (which is white) and the tendon and texture tells me it's pork but supposedly it should have been veal? I do like pork in general so I have no problem even if it's pork costolleta. It's delicious though. The place is small and packed so you'll feel like you are touching the elbows of the people sitting next to you. The service is functional in that they do what you expect but there is no warmly. Maybe it's a family business and they have no problem with having customer or maybe they just don't like tourists. In any case I just don't feel l had good service. They also took the change directly instead of handing back a change. I was going to leave a slightly bigger tip but since they took the 1 euro then that's fine. I did feel slightly rushed but guess they were busy. Overall it's an alright restaurant and probably better than other tourist restaurants. read more

We were in Milano for a day and someone recommended Trattoria Milanese as the place to go for an authentic dinner experience with the best local fare in the area. This place definitely delivered on its promise. When we arrived, it was packed despite being a bit off the beaten path. The service was very professional and our waiter very knowledgeable. I enjoyed one of the best risotto with ossobuco I ever had while my husband opted for a cotoletta alla milanese, both were delicious and perfectly paired with wines recommended by the waiter. We also loved the artichoke appetizer. The meal was crowned with a very tasty zabaione cream- an Italian delicacy made with egg yolks, sugar and a sweet liquor. During my Milan Trip, this restaurant is on my Bucket list. It's been around for a long long tine. They're famous in serving the Elephant Ear (Porkchops). My friends and I just walked in but we were the first one to wait to open for dinner, so they accommodated us but I highly suggest that you make a reservation. The location was so hard to find even if we were using Maps from Iphone but we manage to find it after 20mins or more from walking around. The Elephant ear was superb. Juicy and tasty. I love it. This Trattoria has a very special place my heart. My father left Italy after WWII with my uncle and grandparents. He was 5 years old. So, I was born in another country, and only got to visit Italy for the first time as an adult. I hadn't known this at first, but dad used to go there when he was little, with his family. He was born in Milano (my family is from Napoli) and apparently they frequently went to eat there. I stumbled there with MY family (husband and children) decades later, soon after my dad had passed, and "by chance" it was the one place where we could get a table that night. I had one of the best meals of my life, and called my uncle to talk about it. He then told me how much of a classic that place had always been and that it was their favorite place to frequent in the 50s. That brought me so much warmth to my heart, it felt that much more special to me, almost as if I had been there *with* them. From the location, to the atmosphere, the staff, the food, it was all perfect. I will *always* go back, every time I am in Milano! read more

There is a reason this place has been in business almost 100 years, well ok there are multiple reasons. For one the food is fabulous, secondly the staff is great and you can tell some of the guys have been there their whole lives, thirdly it feels like home when you sit down. Our wine guy in Florida recommended we dine here (well actually he demanded it - right down to telling us exactly what we would order) and so we had to go. It was a short walk from our hotel so we gave it a try. It is on a very cool street, the first 3-4 places are bars where the people just drink and laugh in the street. After you get through that about 50 yards further up it is quiet and we walked right by the first time as it is not obvious that the trattoria is there. We sat down in what I think was a room for English speakers (lol), all the waiters spoke (some) English and were given a bread basket with soft bread and bread sticks. We ordered a bottle of local wine (38€) and like the good students we are, ordered the items we were told to order: osso bucco, risotto, veal Milanese, we added the salad which did not disappoint. The buffalo mozzarella was soft, fresh and even a little tangy. The table olive oil which I added to the tomato was rich but light. The veal chop was PERFECT. I wouldn't say I even like veal, but I would eat that everyday. It was crispy on the outside, soft in the center and even the bone was worth chewing on to get every little bit. Osso bucco was tender and flavorful. Big bonus was the giant glob (about 3-4 tb) of bone marrow that came out. I spread it on a slice of soft bread for a bit of fatty heaven. Risotto was a great texture, cooked well and seasoned well. It had some saffron in it which most people really enjoy (I do not - but that is my personal preference). We did not order dessert as we had too much gelato during the day but they did have about 8 dessert offerings. I even heard the lady at the table next to us ask her waiter for the check and for a reservation at the same time the next day! Yes it's that good!! Total dinner cost was 119€. read more

Went for dinner (march'24). RisottoE ossobucco- the risotto was aldente, not as creamy as i expected, was allright. The osso b was tender and very good. They tasted mild, not overseasoned. I wished it would have been served piping hot. It tasted almost warm to lukewarm. Veal Milanese was a big portion served with a slice of lemon. Was good. Artichoke baked was mild and tasted fine. So was funghi starter. I think quality is good, but the food is very mild, which alot of tourist probably don't mind. Ambiance was bustling with people coming in and out. I ordered the costoletta alla milanese (Milanese veal), and I did not expect for it to be so huge-- it was bigger than the size of my face! All the same, it tasted quite good: the interior could've been a bit juicier, but otherwise the exterior was delicately-fried and, paired with some roasted potatoes and white wine, it was a very-satisfying meal. Service was friendly and attentive, which was a plus. Would only knock off half a star for its rather pricey menu, along with the fact that it cost extra for potatoes as a side dish with the Milanese veal. We wandered in here mostly because we were starving, but it ended up as probably my favorite meal of the whole trip. I was a little worried since everybody in the restaurant were tourists when we entered (including ourselves obviously), but thankfully this ended up being a real home-cooked meal kind of place. (It also quickly filled up with locals later in the evening.) This place looks exactly the way you want an Italian restaurant to look, full of pretty wooden period details, brick archways, subtly woven checkered table cloths... There was a little old man waiter who was quick witted and friendly who also really added to that 'this is an Italian joint' ambiance. The food here was deliciously spot on. I had a truly stand out red wine from Sardinia that I wish I had written down the name of. It was just a 1/4 liter too, so affordable and delicious. My entree was the ossobuco with saffron risotto, a Milanese classic that satisfied every corner of my soul and stomach. I mean, goddamn was that a great meal. I also had some of the cooked asparagus in olive oil which was a simply delicious as it sounds. I wish I had been hungry enough for dessert here, because everything else was so great. I would love to come back here if Im ever in town again, great food, great portions and great prices. The only weird thing here is the bathroom, which isn't a bad thing, but it's such an aesthetic shock that I don't even want to spoil it. Just... check it out. read more

This is definitely the best meal I had in Italy. There's 2 restaurants that are right next to each other and I was going to walk into another one because it looked nicer, but then decided to go with my gut and go to the one that I had originally to go into. First off, at 7:00pm, the restaurant is pretty empty because people in Italy eats pretty late. Around 8:00pm, this place will be packed, so make sure you make reservation if you can. First course: spaghetti carbonara made on special request. Perfect saltines, perfect creaminess, perfect every bite. Second course: Osso buco with risotto. The veal shank is so tender and so soft that it falls off the bone. The risotto is cooked perfectly that it's a creamy yet still has the bite to it. This is a must order dish! Third course: Fried veal. It taste just like fried chicken, with a squeeze lemon to brighten the whole dish up. This is another dish you gotta have! Italians love their veal, so you can't get better fried veal than here! Four course: Artichoke with cheese. The artichokes were fresh with a little bite of sourness for the bite. It pairs perfectly and goes well with the creamy cheese. Definitely another must order dish. Five course: Tiramisu. Yes, by this time I was STUFFED to death, but i had to get this dish still because where else can you get better tiramisu than in Italy. This was a perfect way to end the meal. Tip: Come early or make reservation cause this place definitely gets packed! read more

This is a very traditional Milanese style Italian restaurant that caters to locals. The menu is in Italian, but if you have a basic knowledge of food or a google translate application, you can figure out what you are ordering. I highly recommend that you make reservations. Typical to most restaurants in Milan, the locals don't start to eat until 9:00 p.m. and the restaurant is mainly tourists from 7-9 p.m. I ordered osso bucco al riso (osso bucco with risotto milanese) while my husband ordered Steak with artichokes. We split a bottle of wine. Both of our dishes delicious. The osso bucco wasn't beautifully plated, but man was it perfectly cooked and just feel apart. I love risotto milanese is risotto cooked with safron to make it that beautiful golden color. The artichokes were fresh and perfectly seasoned hearts. My husbands steak really was a gorgeous piece of meat and well cooked. Both plates were quite large and we were glad we didn't order more food as we wouldn't have been able to eat any more. If you are looking for a traditional milanese meal, I highly recommend stopping by this restaurant. read more

Charming Traditional Trattoria on a Side Street in Historic Center We enjoyed the ambiance of this charming trattoria on a small side street, not too far from the Duomo in the city's historic area. There is no English menu but the waiter was able to guide us through the choices and we had excellent seafood and risotto Milanese. Tourists seem to be seated in the back of the restaurant, which was fine, and we had a nice conversation with another American family. One of our favorite meals in Milano, Italy was our dinner at Trattoria Milanese. Trattoria Milanese has been serving traditional Milan dishes since 1933. All of the dishes are home-cooked style dishes that your grandma would have cooked if you had a Milanese grandma. We did not make a reservation in advance, but our table of four arrived at 7pm as the restaurant was just opening so we managed to score a table. I would highly recommend making a reservation since the waiter seemed slightly annoyed that we did not call ahead and he hesitated to give us a table. The menu is only offered in Italian (a good sign that the restaurant caters to locals, not tourists). Unfortunately, I had a difficult time translating many of the dishes on the menu. Our server could tell we were struggling with the menu so he was kind enough to order for us. We were treated to the most amazing family-style dinner that night! We enjoyed a Caprese Salad, Asparagus, Tagliatelle with Porcini, Osso Bucco and Risotto, and Veal Milanese. Everything was amazing, especially the osso bucco and veal milanese!!! I do not like mushrooms so I probably would not have ordered the Tagliatelle with Porcini, but I just pushed the mushrooms onto my husband's plate and enjoyed the pasta. The portions were huge so we struggled to clean our plates. At one point our waiter decided my youngest sister was not eating enough and proceeded to fill her plate with pasta and exclaimed "Mangia! Mangia!". I nearly died laughing! Since we did not save room for dessert our waiter brought us some complimentary biscotti to enjoy with our espressos after our meal. Oh lala! The food here was amazing, no joke! I ate the tagliatelle with porcini, it came out looking really simple but for real this was by far the best pasta I ever eaten. Same with the Risotto Rosso buco so so so good. I just wanted to eat everything again and again. We also ordered asparagus with what I think was parmigiano but I ate that before I took a photo, yes it literally took 2 seconds and the asparagus was gone. Our waiter was so funny and because we had a hard time understanding each other he just gave us what he thought was good and it turned out to be awesome. For dessert we tried to ask what he recommended but he just said ok ok and walked away (in a funny way) and we ended up with tiramisu, some hard biscuits and Zabajone caldo. Very enjoyable experience. I was in search of the 'best' risotto Milanese and found this place via Chowhound. Knew I'd like it from the moment I'd walked in. Great atmosphere: Very old-school Italian, wine bottles lining the walls, brick arches, and communal tables. The risotto Milanese was Great. Perfect texture and consistency, very flavorful, and even better with a sprinkle of black pepper. And the portion was quite generous. I asked the waiter to recommend a vegetable dish -- artichokes with Taleggio cheese. So delicious! Sadly, I couldn't handle a dessert, but the meal ended with a complimentary plate of almond biscotti and butter cookies. Nice touch. I usually seek out restaurants popular among locals, where the locals-to-tourists ratio is something like 5:1. (And off the beaten tourist path, no menu turistico, per favore!) For this restaurant, I'd make an exception. It's definitely on the tourist radar, thanks to Rick Steves and others. Go for a late dinner from Mon-Thurs, and you'll be surrounded by tourists. Go for lunch, and you'll eat with more locals, businessmen, and neighborhood ladies who lunch. But when the food is this good, who cares who you sit next to?! read more
