Well, the wine was good. Lackluster service from the start. Staff dragged full garbage bags past our table to the front door. Spaghetti con vongole tasted fine but several clams had not opened (which made me a bit nervous) and there were shell fragments throughout. My husband's lasagna had little to no meat and was more like cheese soup. Three small pieces of garlic bread was almost 9 pounds. Our hotel was in the same block as this restaurant and we sort of stumbled across it while looking for dinner. We were reading the menu posted outside the door when we were greeted by one of the employees (I think he was "family") and then we were also greeted by an older gentleman who appeared to be the owner. We decided to give it a try. The lady waiting on us was very nice (also appeared to be family) and service was excellent. BTW - they have live music with a piano player. My wife had the spaghetti with bolanagese sauce and it was truly exceptional. I had the lasagna (my "go to" Italian dish) and it was also delicious. Great little restaurant. First meal in London, England after 11 hour direct flight from SFO. Doors down from our hotel on busy Southhampton Row near the theater district in London's west end. Wife's grilled 19 GBP seabream fish was tasty, but no taste of gill sauce. Comes with lots of broccoli and fewer potatoes and a dash of tomato for color presentation. Sauce was on the light side. My 21 GBP cod in tomato sauce had lots of carmelized onions for flavor, a few potatoes, brocoli and potatoes, with a slice of tomato. Excellent dish with lots of flavor added to the tender white fish in good size portion. Both dishes ample portion size,although the code dish was far tastier with the tomato sauce being more hearty in flavor. Tip included with price in England. We came here because someone wanted pizza...we should have gone somewhere else. First, the man who seated us was rude, called me sir and did not apologize. However, he knew that didn't sit well because he stayed away from our table the rest of our visit, which was good. The food was okay, the service was poor, and I am guessing because we are American, they had the audacity to ask for a tip when we paid. I don't think anyone visiting London should eat here if this is the best they can do. read more

Great food, great atmosphere, open until 1am! This was the only place we could find still open and they have amazing pizza, pasta, and a selection of different desserts. These guys are REAL italians. We had the tiramisu and when we were done we got offered a limoncello shot on the house! I love that it's open late for travelers. So good, highly recommend! read more

The man who owns the place is a sexist, and nasty. I just wanted a piece of dessert to go, he took two men who came in after me before me. He was very nasty and short temper. He gives Italians a bad name ...I left because no one has time for that, in the cakes look like a piece of sewage. They are disgusting, and marinating in old looking liquid. The place was dirty too. I left. I would give him 0 stars if I can. What a nasty persom...I wouldn't give him any business. When he finally got to me, I asked him for tiramisu and teapot another fruit cooking cake on the plate. I told him that it was wrong, and he said it was right and was very mean. So at that point I just walked out. I just walked right out and went to Pizza Express, who has absolutely delicious desserts by the way. The woman in there was so delightful. read more

Decent food, but overpriced. It's nice to have the piano player though, who plays classical music. I came with a (boy)friend late one rainy Saturday evening around 11PM and when we asked, "are you still serving" was promptly seated with an "of course!" We sat by this pretty mural of the tourist highlights of Italy (Venice to the left, Trevy Fountain in the centre, then the Colosseum in the top-right background, with Piza in the front. While not at all geographically accurate, it was still nice to look at while waiting for our food, dining, and listening to the piano. My friend had the whitefish, which came fried (he didn't like it that much, I thought it was okay-for cooked fish...but then again, I don't really like cooked fish). I had the stuffed mushrooms and the "Maryland" chicken. The mushrooms were good, and I should have gotten bread with it to soak up the delicious butter sauce that it came in, but I wanted to save room for my entree. For the "Maryland" chicken, as someone who lived in the DC-Maryland area, I honestly would have expected Crab, NOT chicken as the pairing. I guess their interpretation of any American city is that everything is fried, which is how the dish arrived. Deep-fried, at that. Deep-fried chicken (still looking for Chicken Parm in this city, they obviously know how to do it, and this WAS an Italian restaurant). Deep-fried pineapple. Deep-fried banana. For what it's worth, the fried pineapple and banana were delicious. The chicken wasn't bad either. It's just that by the end of the meal, I was wishing for a sauce of some kind (mainly tomato, for the chicken...). It's not that the chicken was dry--actually, it quite moist for fried chicken( -oh wait, that's grease not natural moisture). It's just that after eating several fried things, my mouth wanted a bit of moist variety to go with it. (and get your mind out of the gutter.) The dessert cart was sitting right next to me, and I do have to admit that I eyed it longingly before ordering. After finishing the food, (which wasn't bad, just not fantastic) I was too full to want to eat anything else. I definitely will return to try their desserts though, because they looked amazing. I imagine sitting, eating the delicious tiramisu, listening to the piano...ah, it's a nice idea. read more

Trattoria Verdi dishes up some of the best Italian food I've had. The lasagna is mouth watering, the spaghetti bolognese is delicious, and the spaghetti and meatballs won't disappoint you! The staff is great - ask for Tomas and prepare to be entertained especially if you start the joking. Several people have recommended Ciao Bella to us, but Trattoria Verdi is so much better in quality of food and price point. I recommend you give it a try! read more

Just a few steps away from the Hilton Doubletree hotel on Southampton Row and two blocks from Holborn Tube it's worth checking out Very friendly staff from Italy. Fresh food, nice specials. I had the Tre Colori Insalata, with fresh avocado, fresh mozzarella and tomatoes. The chicken special, Cesar Polli was excellent. Live piano music was especially nice as well. Recently (within the past month) whilst on a vacation in London, we were recommended to eat at this wonderful Italian restaurant near our hotel. What a delight. The family who owns this restaurant are adorable! We ate here twice in our 10 day stay and had different dishes each time. The fettuccine alfredo is wonderful. The arribiatta sauce is especially (and appropriately) spicy. I even asked if they could "make" me a cesar salad, and they did their best to come up with something spectacular! The restaurant is in close walking distance to The British Museum and between the Russell Square and Holborn tube stations. It's always nice to go to a restaurant where the owner fusses about the tables ensuring that everyone is enjoying the food. Also, there is a piano player who is outstanding and she played classics to Disney to show tunes. It was wonderful!! read more

Finally a restaurant in London that has good service! I stopped here this evening for dinner. After having the past two days of typical UK non-existent service where you have to hunt someone down to get a refill or anything else including the bill, I was pleasantly surprised to get great service here. I ordered the caprese salad and grilled seabream. The salad was good and the mozzarella was very fresh. The fish was excellent and came with a white wine dill sauce that was good. I've never had seabream before so I don't know if this is typical or not, but I had to be careful eating it as as there were a number of small bones (15 total). The fish came with some potatoes and steamed vegetables which were tasty. The food was good, but the biggest thing that impressed me though was the great service. Everyone there had a service mentality and this was a nice change. I will definitely be back if I am in the area. read more

Quirky and delightful - Good value but not perfect The staff really make this place - from the servers to the bartender to the pianist everyone seemed happy to be here and they really make you feel like family invited to a party that they host every night. The decor is a bit homely with tile floors, banquet chairs and amateurish paintings adorning the walls. The restaurant specializes in seafood but we were in the mood for lighter fare so we ordered a selection of pizzas - all of which were uniformly good (though not perfect). One of us did order Gnocchi with pesto which was overcooked. That said, they did have an Amarone which was delicious and very well priced. The desserts were all quite fabulous - particularly the tiramisu - as was the limoncello. In short, if you are looking for an evening of fine dining this is not the place for you. But if you want a fun evening with good food at an attractive price you could do far, far worse. read more

A delight for this weary traveler! I arrived late into London and was lucky that this spot stays open late. They staff (including owner) was very welcoming. The restaurant was clean and inviting. The live piano player was a nice touch. I had the bruschetta and the veal scaloppini. Both were excellent. I also had a glass of the Montepulciano red and finished it off with a tiramisa. This is a fairly standard Italian restaurant with a big pasta menu and a cosy atmosphere, located very centrally, near Russell Square station. I went there tonight to an enormous dinner (50 people) after a conference. The organisers had booked an entire room downstairs, which was cosy and pleasant, although the decor was slightly odd (skis and pictures of Venice?). The staff were friendy and helpful and coped fantastically with such a big group (bigger in fact than the original booking had stated). The courses came out quickly and they managed to serve everyone at the same time, despite the fact that we had all ordered different dishes: this was impressive! The food, however, was not enormously exciting and the meal turned out being quite expensive for what it was (about £20 for a starter and a main). I had the minestrone starter and a vegetarian pasta main, both of which were fine but nothing special. Some of the fish and other pasta dishes looked more interesting, but nothing looked amazing. The parmesan was not freshly grated... I would recommend the place for a big booking somewhere fairly central, but I wouldn't feel passoniate about returning there for the food. read more

Wow! This was some really good Italian food. It was a good place to take a family after a late flight. It is nice and cozy. Me and my family of four ordered a rustic pizza with mushrooms, pesto pasta, and spaghetti and meatballs.When we sat down at our table the first thing I noticed was the beautiful artwork. Our server was really polite and nice. If she made a little mistake ( which was very rare ) she would fix it immediately. We asked for some garlic bread one serving with cheese and one without. The one without cheese I feel was better because you could taste more of the garlic. When our food came, it was delicious and just the right around. It was probably a family restaurant. It made me feel good to support them. After it was finished i was full but not to much. The desert cart looked delicious but I was too full. If I ever go their again, I will try the cake. Yum! I recommend this place to tourists and visitors looking for a good family meal in London! there was one down side though. Garlic bread was $6:00! other than that it was amazing!!! read more

I try to stay away from the tourist traps and chain restaurants, instead wandering into small restaurants catering to locals and business travelers. I was not disappointed here, the atmosphere was quiet and relaxing and the staff friendly and attentive. The caprese salad was a little light on mozzarella but the fettuccine Alfredo was buttery and very filling but not heavy on the stomach. The house white wine was sweet and not too dry, inviting me to have a second glass and the tiramisu was a wonderful ending, the coffee obvious in both the flavor and moist texture as is often missing in the states. DON't go here. We frequent non-chain Italian restaurants in London and from the moment we walked in we knew this would not end well. We were not greeted with the typical Italian welcome. We weren't greeted at all. Service was poor, the food was bland but worse yet was the scam when the bill came. I don't normally scrutinize bills but the total seemed high and it was odd that it came out to an exact amount ending in .00. I then took the time to add up the individual charges and realized I had been overcharged by about 15%. Since the bill specifically said that service was not included, I called the waiter on this and he started to squirm and give some BS about the difference being a "restaurant charge" because we were eating inside vs take away. I realized I was being scammed so I further questioned him. At this point, another guy came over and tried to smooth it over. Absolute thieves. DO NOT SUPPORT THESE CROOKS. read more
