We booked a Costa Rica trip with Travel by Jen through Travelzoo, and overall we had a wonderful experience. Costa Rica itself was absolutely beautiful, and the itinerary included some great destinations like Arenal, Tamarindo, Monteverde, and San José. Once everything was in place, the trip itself was very enjoyable and memorable. We did experience some challenges leading up to and during the trip, particularly with communication and some logistical issues around accommodations and reimbursements. That part of the process was stressful, and communication at times was more difficult than we would have liked. That said, I do want to acknowledge that Cody genuinely tried his best throughout the process, and once Danielle became involved, everything was handled professionally and thoroughly. Danielle ultimately sorted out the reimbursement issue, followed through on what was promised, and helped bring the situation to a fair resolution. We truly appreciated her stepping in and taking the time to resolve things properly. While the communication could have been smoother overall, we're grateful that Travel by Jen stood by their commitment in the end. I had a very difficult and stressful experience with Travel by Jen (also known as Jet Set Vacations). I booked and paid in full on September 22, 2025 for a Costa Rica trip for four people, including two ocean-view rooms at Hotel Costa Verde. When I arrived in Costa Rica on November 22, 2025, the hotel informed me at the front desk that no reservation existed under my name. The hotel explained that my reservation had been cancelled due to non-payment by Travel by Jen, despite the fact that I had already paid the agency in full. As a result, the two ocean-view rooms I reserved were no longer available, and I was forced to pay out of pocket upon arrival--a very unpleasant way to start a vacation. The front desk staff also stated that they have ongoing issues with Travel by Jen related to non-payment and indicated the agency allegedly owed "tens of thousands of dollars." Based on my experience, once Travel by Jen has your money, they are extremely difficult to deal with, and their failure to pay vendors can directly impact travelers. Honesty, respect for all but especially us senior citizens is needed by this travel agency. Nick Paone (our alleged travel agent) is a piece of work and after our horrible Costa Rica trip back in March 2025; I've reached out during and after the trip and still no resolve and it's April.26th, 2025. I made contact via numerous email messages to Nick, as soon as we arrived in Costa Rica, all during our stay there. We were supplied with a compact vehicle instead of a well needed Jeep (like other more privileged customers of Travel by Jen that we meet there at the car rental location). There's nothing but winding roads and mountainous terrain and that vehicle barely made it. We were told it our be like paradise; not the places we were sent to. In spite of the journal I sent him during our horrific experience, no appropriate action taken to eased our pain. We were involved in a road rage incident right in front of the hotel, in spite the fact that Nick assured us that it was totally safe. When we returned, the complaint continued because it was as if they swept it all under the rug (so to speak). He told me my concerns were forwarded to customer service and it was out of his hands. Well customer service is the co-owner Jennifer (from the Travel by Jen namesake). I explained every single I'll-experience we encountered to her, and of course she tried to justify every single problem we brought to her/ their attention with ~ she was just there earlier this year, end of last year and it was all fine and dandy". Not where we were placed; we had to move to 3 different rooms and the last room, kept us up every single night due to the plumbing noises and the AC unit sounded like a helicopter hovering over us. We also wasn't aware of having to drive over 12 hours driving, paying at least 10 tolls and parking fees. We've been waiting and I sent emails illustrating how many times I had to reach out to Nick as if we were being ignored (which I know for certain, we were). It's been approximately 31 days to date, we've been back and we are still waiting. Listen, the only time we began actually getting their attention was when I filed a formal dispute with my credit card company. Then they responded immediately all of a sudden with threats of lawsuit of Theft of Service(s). They design their contracts to trap/ trick customers, forcing us to have no recourse but wait on them, to resolve said situations that arise. We would NEVER EVER use Travel by Jen (did I say NEVER?) again. You have the absolute right to file a dispute with your credit card company; just document everything even their threats after you make your dispute. If your experience isn't as advertised (or what was told to you by your travel agent) then it is "Service received was not as advertised". They had the nerve to tell us, "we get what we paid for" (guess that means, disrespect, idle threats of being sued for exercising your rights and being ignored with unresolved issues). THEY ARE A TOTAL NIGHTMARE. I don't even want to give them one star - but I have to or it won't get posted. read more

SAMANTHA SLOANE IS A MIRACLE WORKER!! This was my first time booking through Travel By Jen, and I will definitely use them again simply because of the service I received from Samantha. To begin with, I did everything wrong when I booked the trip. This was a combined flight + resort deal. I don't know how it happened, but I somehow booked us out of the wrong airport and booked us the wrong room. I was in a complete panic. So I called Samantha and she fixed everything while staying on the phone with me. Not only did she save my trip, she never made me feel like a total idiot for getting it so wrong in the first place. We booked our trip out 8 months in advance. During that time, Samantha checked in with me several times to make sure everything was still okay. At one point, I got an email from the "resort" saying I had to click a link or I would lose my booking. It seemed odd, so I reached out to Samantha, who responded immediately and told me it looked like a scam. Our trip was supposed to be to Jamaica this upcoming weekend. Unfortunately, Hurricane Melissa got to the island first. But Samantha called me immediately to talk through what our options were and what we could do. I would've been completely lost without her. I've seen a bunch of negative reviews about Travel By Jen, and if you're reading this, I know you've seen them too. I can't speak to anything/anyone except for Samantha Sloane, but I will recommend her to everyone I know and love. And I will 100% use her services again. She takes care of her folks. read more

These agents don't know what they're talking about and sent us on a nine day trip to Costa Rica with five days of driving all day long! Our agent, Nick, told us that we needed to drive to see the country, but I explicitly said I didn't want to spend ALL DAY driving. This was the worst vacation we have ever had and it was exhausting trying to get anywhere. Traffic of course is terrible in Costa Rica, but the plan that was laid out for us was also just terrible. This guy didn't know what he was talking about when he booked us and when I tried to change things he was not helpful. I even asked about adding trip Insurance and he said it was too late because we had already booked the airfare. This trip was a disaster all the way around. When we got to Costa Rica we waited three hours for our rental car and ended- up getting nowhere calling Nick, so requested a supervisor at Travel By Jen..who was also unhelpful... first it was suggested that we run out into the street and flag down the rental van when we saw it... Lol! So much more ridiculousness and runaround ensued rather than Travel by Jen/Jet Set Vacations trying to help us! Then it was suggested by this 'supervisor Danielle, after finally getting the rental car and getting on our way, that we just stop and sleep somewhere for the night. I couldn't believe this because there were no motels or hotels along our route to stop at, nor did this 'supervisor' Danielle, offer to take care of our expenses incurred due to our delay at the airport for our car! Suffice it to say she was talking to us like she was our mother and making suggestions to placate my husband and I, but not doing anything to actively help our situation or improve the trip or pay for a motel/hotel, even if we could find one on our first night. We had to travel through mountains and along cliffs and on back roads to get to our first destination about 4 hours further, (after waiting three hours) which was already paid for. Supervisor Danielle was terrible and obviously just full of BS, because she certainly didn't understand what we were encountering, nor did she care. Travel agents are supposed to help you get the trip you want, and if you can't get it, not just book you anyway. This Nick guy we entrusted our travel plans with booked us on a ridiculous trip, driving mostly and seeing very little...we would not have approved of this without knowing the incredible distances we would have to drive; he either didn't know the actual time it would take (doubtful), or lied by omission and said "two hours or so", and I even hesitated at this; then he said we had to live with it because he had already booked everything! Unbelievable! Told us that driving was part of seeing Costa Rica. But I've talked to people who have been there and had a much nicer vacation and didn't drive all day long, got to explore and see the sites. Obviously if all you do is drive you're too exhausted to really see anything. We never even got to see the volcano because we were so exhausted from driving there was no time left. Also, If you want an all-inclusive vacay you don't go to Costa Rica either... it is a place to explore. However, seeing the country in nine days is pretty impossible; you need to divide it in half at least, and see parts within an hour or so drive and perhaps come back to this country. Not spend your entire trip driving all over the place through horrible back roads and into the night when you're wanting to relax. You need to get where you're going so that you can rest up and see the sites the next day. This was just so bad it's hard to explain it all here. We also encountered problems with water at one so-called 4 star resort. We stayed at three places total and they were all less than the stars stated, with actually one 3 star being the nicest, but it didn't have any amenities. We supposedly were staying at two 4 star resorts and one 3 star, but they were probably two and three stars. This vacation was so terrible I can't even express it. Never will use this travel agency again! The absolute worst I have ever had the misfortune of using. Probably best to keep reading all these reviews... there are quite a lot of bad ones and I'm sure the three star rating is going to drop pretty soon...they'll probably go out of business eventually; but beware because they could just change their name. I'll never book again with an agency without thoroughly reading reviews and talking to people about their experience. In reading the reviews here I noticed that the responses from Travel by Jen to the bad reviews sound very snotty and full of excuses from the agency itself. Don't let them fool you... They are masters at manipulating you into a trip and selling you on something that isn't of the value you pay for, whether you're booking a five star or a three star vacation it appears you don't get what you pay for here. FABULOUS HONEYMOON TRIP!! Thanks to Nick and all of his expertise on Costa Rica, I was able to send my favorite Newlyweds on an Amazing Honeymoon! Airfare went smoothly, they got to visit 3 areas in Arenol, Tamarindo and the Cloud Forest,, rented an SUV, stayed in upgraded hotels with swim up bars, hot springs, and yummy breakfast included each day, ... and were able to fit in 4 fun excursions. They had The Best time, you could see their smiles from here ;) Nick has Wonderful communication (and patience with all of my inquiries)! I was very nervous after seeing the other reviews on Yelp, but we actually had a great experience traveling to Costa Rica through them. The website is terrible and customer service is so-so but that's the tradeoff for the amazing deal. We worked with Nick who I will admit wasn't the most friendly customer service person I've ever met, and at times it felt like he just wanted to get off the phone with me, but he did get the job done. He had personally done this same Costa Rica package before so he was able to make a suggestion to adjust our itinerary and we ended up changing the airport and removing the San Jose destination for more time in the other locations. In Arenal, we upgraded the hotel from the basic one to Hotel Mountain Paradise which was totally worth the extra cost. We didn't upgrade in Samara and went with the basic option, Hotel Sol Samara, which was fine and the staff were great but it's out of the way and very basic, if I did it again I would probably upgrade that hotel too. The base price is so cheap I think it isn't too hard to swallow the extra for a nicer stay, but that's just me. Nothing went wrong with an of the flights or tours or accommodations so we never had to contact Travel By Jen during the trip, fortunately. It seems like that's what people had the most complaints about. I will say that I did plan very meticulously and I mapped out all of our locations and the timing, and I contacted the tour companies for details and confirmation via WhatsApp in advance, which I'm sure helped to avoid any mishaps. I just came back from a Costa Rica trip booked through TBJ - through Sue specifically. It was my first time there and while I'm reading through some of the past unflattering reviews, I'd not necessarily disagree with all of them. If folks were likely expecting luxury accommodations for cheap, it's on them. To me the hotels and the value they provided were higher than expected. I know what I'm talking about, had just been to another Caribbean holiday destination that is at least x2 as pricey for half the value. That being said, there was quite a bit of driving involved in mountainous terrain with narrow roads and that may not be for everybody. There is that issue with insurance as well which is pertinent- TBJ needs to update it's notes. Sue personally was very considerate that ours was a family of older children and booked our itinerary carefully to include appropriate activities and accommodations. Samantha was a great communicator up until we reached our destination. We sent her four emails and I left two messages for her. She did not respond to any of them. The issue was, Samantha sent us a list of excursions and we picked four of them. We are obviously not familiar with Costa Rica and how far things are, so that's why you rely on the travel agent to book things for you Two of the excursions were three hours BOTH ways. If you've ever been to Costa Rica, driving at night is not safe (very dark and windy roads and lots of rain) so we tried to contact her but to no avail. We sent four emails AND two voicemail messages. We did not go on the excursions and we lost money due to her lack of poor planning. They want your money, then once you're at your trip, don't expect a response. Do not use this company. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS: In August 2024, I booked a group trip through Travel by Jen for a February 2025 vacation to Tulum with five friends. Earlier this month, we discovered alarming recent reviews about our chosen resort: foot and mouth disease outbreaks, widespread black mold, undrinkable brown water, plumbing issues, severely limited dining options, and misrepresented room conditions. When we contacted them to cancel due to these serious health and safety concerns, their response was appalling. Despite being over 60 days from our travel date (their website clearly states they offer 50% refund 30-45 days out), they insisted no refunds were possible under any circumstances. When confronted with their own written policy, they claimed their website was incorrect. Their customer service was shockingly dismissive. I personally called separately from my group and I was told someone else already called. Our travel agent had left for the day and I was told to call back tomorrow. I was never offered a return call from the agent. It has been over a week and I haven't heard from anyone at the company. They brushed off our legitimate health concerns by suggesting that just because other guests had terrible experiences doesn't mean we would too. They didn't offer me a solution as a paying customer. We've each initiated disputes with our credit card companies, who are supporting our cases based on Travel by Jen's published terms and conditions that directly contradict their current stance. I only used this company because another group member made the arrangements, but I strongly advise against booking with them. Their deceptive practices, hostile customer service, and refusal to honor their own policies make them completely untrustworthy. read more

On the first day of our 6 night 7 day vacation through Travel by Jen we found our that our 2 nights in Panama in room that was scheduled to be on stilts over water had been cancelled and we were rebooked into another resort without the over water experience. The replacement resort was nice, but we had to take a 25 minute van ride to get to the beach on a path that would be generously be called a road ( I'm tall and I hit my head on the window 3 times as we were being bounced around in the van). In addition to the above issue we just didn't realilze how much time we would be spending getting to our multiple locations. On the first day we had to take 2 planes to get to San Jose and then drive over 4 hours to get to our first resort which was very old and run down. 3 days later we had to take a van to the border crossing to Panama and then transfer to another van to travel to a dock and then take a boat to another dock when we had to catch another van to finally reach our resort. On the way back we had to repeat this process and then drive 6 hours to get back to San Jose. Finally, although all of these transfers we handled very well, the written instructions given to us weren't as clear as we would have liked and we were always worried that we would miss a connection. read more

We clearly told them comfort was more important than saving money, we especially wanted the rooms to have air conditioning. Nick told us "don't worry all the places you will be staying at have AC". Well only 1 out of 3 rooms had air condition. We will not use them again. read more

BEWARE: Book through TravelbyJen at your own risk...but not because you weren't warned!!! Looking forward to a great girls trip with myself and 5 others. We were so excited that we booked 6 months in advance. The birthday girl looked over the package offered and read reviews of the All Inclusive Resort (Kore Resort in Tulum) and said let's go! How can a place go from a 4 star location to 2 stars in the past 3 months! Probably because it was a scam to get lots of folks to book. So many people took advantage of this deal and then went and now are telling the truth about the property (black mold in the bathrooms, only one restaurant that can't keep up with the demand, no elevator working, no running water for upwards of 3 days, hot tub never warm, and more)! The worst part is not just that the resort is a dump, but the fact that TravelbyJen wasn't interested in ensuring that we didn't have to endure this hell of a place but rather trying to upsell us on other properties that have reviews that are just as bad and for more money! The customer service is deplorable and I am sure that the way that they are selling these packages has got to be illegal. You receive a non-itemized invoice that tells you to go to their terms and conditions (mind you, the link to the conditions on the invoice take you to another company's site- JetSet and are not the same as the terms and conditions listed on the TravelbyJen website). They also bill you in 3 different charges which are not outlined in your invoice. My agent did nothing to make things right but rather continued to tell me "you're not getting your money back"! Their own terms and conditions tell you that you can have a 50% refund if requested out at least 45 days and I contacted them well over 60 days before the trip. I will never in my lifetime use this travel company and I would advise this to anyone even considering any package that they advertise! DO NOT USE TRAVEL BY JEN: Booked a trip in August 2024 with 6 people to Tulum for a Feb 2025 girls trip. On Dec 2, 2024, we became aware that our resort's rating took a serious dip due to a series of disturbing events: several cases of foot and mouth disease, black mold, brown water running from faucets, toilets backing up, only one functional restaurant having the same limited menu the entire week and rooms not being as pictured. Of course we were most concerned with the infectious concerns so we wanted to cancel our trip. According to their terms and conditions on the website, there is a 50% refund if you are within a 30-45 day window. We are over 60 days out so should have been fine for a complete refund (minus any fee the airline may charge). When we called to cancel, they immediately told us there were absolutely no refunds for any reason. When I told them what their website said, they told me their website was wrong and that they told us verbally that there are no refunds. They said they could move us somewhere else at a significantly higher rate. They were extremely rude and even had the audacity to say that just because the many reviewers who had bad experiences didn't 'enjoy themselves, it didn't mean we wouldn't!' Who would intentionally go some place with the conditions we saw listed? Who would want to work with an agency that was so rude, attempted to hold us hostage and thinks they can keep money for a trip we haven't taken when we are more than 60 days out and their own terms and conditions contradict what they are telling us? I have traveled to over 30 countries and have worked with many agencies and have never had such nasty customer service. We are working with our respective credit card companies to dispute & refund the charges. They are amenable to do so because of Travel by Jen's own terms and conditions in writing on their website. I will never work with this company again and only used them this time because someone else arranged this trip. Glad I never booked anything with this company. Originally found it with Groupon and then went to the site to check it out before buying a Groupon or booking directly with them. Filled out the online form and the next day a guy named Matt called me and texted me. Returned his call a day later and gave him some ideas of what I was looking for. I was not interested in Dominican Republic or Mexico but was open to Costa Rica, Panama, or even Europe. He was going to call me back in a few hours. This was on a Friday I never heard back from him. I called him back on Monday and he said he had my information and was sending it to another agent. Within 15 minutes a guy named Cody, who sounded identical to Matt and had a very similar phone number coming from the same location called me. I gave him the same information and he told me he would put it into the system and call me back that was almost 2 weeks ago. I booked my own vacation and found some better online deals through Expedia. I am lucky I saw the true colors of these travel agents before getting roped into something or being scammed like some of the other reviews. My advice.... Find a different group. read more

My mother ,daughter,husband and I went on a trip to Costa Rica in January of 2025. We did read the reviews of travelbyjen and decided to try it anyway. When I first called the woman was quite rude and uncooperative stating the hours open weren't correct . It made it difficult to schedule by phone after work and we were given to someone else who worked later hours. This person whose name I don't remember was much better and we booked. We did a 9 day 8 night stay in 3 different hotels . We did have to book our own flights to save money but all in all everything worked out and it was hands down one of the best trips we had ever went on. We did upgrade all the hotels and the rental car so it did end up being much more than the original package was listed for but we all felt it was perfect and we had absolutely no problems. Took a week trip to Costa Rica. We had a situation where we needed to change one night of our stay, but was told there was nothing they could do to help us. Was talked into some rental car upgrades that were not needed and after the trip realized we could book the same items on our own for much less. Our entire experience with travel by Jen was spectacular. I sent an email, got a reply within 15 minutes, and one 10 minute phone call later, we were finalizing details to our vacation. Vacation was practically perfect. LAX was relatively empty due to the pandemic, and we were able to get a direct flight, with zero problems. Two hours later, we landed in Cabo, where we were picked up by a gentleman and a pristine, spectacularly clean Cadillac Escalade. A quick 20 minute drive, we were checking into the hotel, (Reflect Krystal Los Cabos) which was also spectacular. Excellent location, with a direct view of the ocean, and Zippers, the world famous surf break, 100 yards away. Another hundred yards after that is The Rock, another fun point break. Things started out great working with Nick at TravelbyJen (JetSet Vacations). He was efficient and timely in getting back to us about our Cancun package. We received our tickets on time, albeit a few schedule changes, and all of the information needed for travel planned between 12/24/20 and 12/29/20. Nick was friendly and helpful during the planning and preparing portion of our Christmas vacation and we are thankful for that. It got us very excited for travel! The reason for our less than stellar review of Nick and TravelbyJen is that when my family and I arrived at our resort we were faced with a number of issues and Nick left us to deal with them all on our own. The Flamingo Cancun, which was the resort where we were staying, was a dilapidated mess. Our room was rundown much like the rest of the hotel, the all-inclusive package had little to nothing to offer us, and the hotel and its amenities were filthy. We did not feel comfortable staying there and were really very baffled that it was even a recommendation by a travel agent. We contacted Nick immediately and also the emergency number provided by TravelbyJen but were quickly told the reservation was non-refundable. We were given no other additional information. All we wanted was some advice on how to handle the situation. Nick's best advice for us was to talk to the manager. What's the best way to explain to someone who speaks no English that their resort is a dump? My family and I assumed Nick and TravelbyJen had some sort of relationship with this resort considering it is largely advertised on their website. After expressing our concern and frustration with the situation and seeking advice on how to handle it, he said we could be moved on Saturday or Monday of our trip but then Nick stopped responding to our messages. One of the things that really frustrated me is that the emergency line told us that due to recent hurricanes that hit Cancun, this was to be expected. However, the several beautiful neighboring hotels had music, people, and the expected vibe from Cancun that we were expecting at the resort we paid for. Yet, when we pulled up to the Flamingo Cancun we got similar feelings of an interstate motel. I also didn't know hurricanes caused customer service to decline. We chatted with many people staying at hotels along the strip and really could not believe we were having this type of experience compared to the amazing times they were having. So hurricanes I think not. So sad we relied on Nick and TravelbyJen to make this vacation an enjoyable one. He did nothing to make it right and offered no advice on how to handle it. In the future we will not be using this service and cannot recommend it to others. read more

Recently returned from Costa Rica on a package from Travel By Jen, and our Agent is Sue Dibenetto. Our package was great, 10 days, 3 locations and a rental car. The 3 Hotels included in our package were top notch, clean and well staffed. The rental car company was very helpful, and we used their wifi system to navigate our entire trip. We drove from San Jose to the Arenal volcano area, then the Pacific ocean, and then to the cloud forest. Great package! However the best part of our trip was the extra support we received from Sue, when our gps led us astray and we were stranded on a mountain unpaved road in the middle of nowhere. We emailed Sue and she called us right back, so great to hear a friendly voice in our distress. Her support is truly appreciated. Highly recommend her and her company! read more

Recently did a beach week which was set up - great resort at a rockstar price! Also did a vacation in 2014 which was very well done. Samantha Sloane made all the arrangements and even got a beachfront upgrade for almost nothing! Super great service at better prices than I could arrange myself!!! read more
