This winery is a hidden gem. Thier motto is "the bad boys of wine"! THEY DELIVER. They secure the finest grapes, and create top tier wines. Highly recommend the tasting flat... It's a treat. My preference on the sample list was the white wine, my partners was the zinfandel. Ok, I'm a lover of the sweets. So I added the sweet wine that is not on the sample list. OMG... winner. It's been a while since last we visited. The tasting flight was a wonderful selection of 6 wines. As in the past, we found them all to be simply stellar. We came away with a case which, by the way, came with a great discount! Sangiovese, Cab Sauv, Syrah, and Zin. We also really enjoyed talking with Ray, and the other guests. Nice and cool inside on a hot June day. Try the 2019 Zinfandel if you can. Thanks for making such consistently great wines! read more

My daughter recently discovered this hidden gem of a winery and we had the pleasure of spending a Saturday afternoon there. Ray, the winemaker/owner, welcomed us with a cheese and cracker bar and a pitcher of water on each table. The room is surrounded by wine barrels and the printed art from the labels inducing a relaxing vibe. All the wines we tasted were exceptional, especially the GSM. I absolutely love this winery. Ray, one of the wine makers says they only make wines they like. Well, I really like their wines, too. Their reds are usually full of big, earthy spicy flavors and the whites tend to be complex, multi-dimensional concoctions. But the best thing about Tavieso is the informal, casual communal atmosphere. The next best thing is their unpretentious location inside a dusty industrial park in my hometown of Campbell. The label artwork inspired by Mexican folklore is yet another unique, fun quirk of this place. A fun place to sample some excellent wines, priced well below what you'd have to pay for the same quality elsewhere. read more

This place is a hidden gem of Campbell. Tucked-away in an industrial park, you wouldn't expect to find a maker of such exceptional wines. Winemaker Ray Sliter has a small operation in Campbell, producing some really amazing wines, at very reasonable prices. Our favorites are the Cabernets and the Grenaches. Due to zoning, they are only open on Saturdays. They offer a wine club, of which we have become members, and they typically put-out cheese and crackers, along with other tasty bites for visitors. Occasionally, they have live music in the barrel room. They also have a small tasting room up front by the entrance. Ray is quite friendly and accommodating. The first time we visited Travieso, we were the first visitors of the day, and Ray let us pick out the wines to be featured for tasting that day. Really a nice departure from some of the larger more industrial wineries. Give Travieso a try!! read more

This is an outstanding winery in an unexpected location! imo some of the best price performance wine you can buy in the Bay Area--the winemaker, Ray, makes the wine in small amounts with real love, and some really enjoyable blends. So much of the wine making and wineries are over commercialized in the Bay Area--it's great to walk in and do a tasting amongst the barrels, in a small tasting room, chat to the winemaker, check out some of his wines, and also the surprisingly cool bottle labels. If I had to rate their wines, I can't say that they were four stars from my experience but the friendliness of the staff and their quirky artisan labels earns them an extra star for experience. We came here as a group on passport days and was warmly greeted, checked in and ushered on our way into their tasting room. Their tasting room is basically in a garage in an odd part of Campbell you would never normally visit but I suppose that makes it all the more interesting. For Passport days, they had an excellent spread of breads, crackers, cheese, snacks, honey ... you name it! This was definitely a great food spot to nibble on things while you enjoyed their wine. They did four pours although they had five wines on the table. I wasn't sure if maybe one of them was for VIP but they didn't really tell us why we didn't get the last pour ... Regardless, there were two chards and two ... syrah's? or one cab and one syrah. They were not particularly memorable and the whites were just a little too tart / perhaps young for my liking? The syrah's were ok, I felt like they should have allowed it to open up a little more in a decanter because it definitely needed to mellow out in my glass for a while. read more

You'll think you're headed into the totally wrong direction before you wind up there, in a strip mall type thing int he middle of nowhere next to a kung fu school. Apparently Travieso & Pinder have combined forces lately, just FYI. Travieso has some of the most beautiful wine labels I've ever seen, I really wish they sold prints! The wines are definitely on the unique side. The reds are a little peppery, though El Chupacabra is a little more floral. If you're in the area, it's worth stopping by. You can tell these people do it for the love of wine making, not in the interest of getting rich. It's a great deal for the tasting, and their wines are in the $15-40 range. If you like something though and have the money, buy a bottle, because it supports the local business. read more

I gave this little winery located in an industrial section of Campbell, CA because of the total experience: We got there early. We met the owner / wine maker. Because we were the first ones there, we got to help choose the day's wines for tasting. That was fun. We tasted the Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, and a white blend of Chardonnay, Viognier and Rousanne...yummy! The wine maker is a geophysicist by day, but his true passion is wine-making. He will talk liberally about "his babies," that's what he calls his wines. We will definitely go back!!! read more

Winemaker Ray is a work colleague of mine and I am astonished that he is able to achieve such a high bar "moonlighting" at Travieso. Although moonlighting is hardly the right word, because it is obvious that this is a 24-7 operation; every step of the winemaking process is done by Ray personally (the crush pad is behind the tasting room!). His wines speak for themselves; they are terrific. Travieso's location in the warehouse district of San Jose is tucked away, yet convenient to many other spots. I dropped by after an errand and it ended up only being a 5 min drive away. I wish that there were more of these winery tasting rooms in San Jose, like there are for the craft breweries. It is a very personal and genuine experience that is a much-needed counter balance to life in the fast lane of Silicon Valley. I highly recommend stopping by for a tasting and some vino therapy. read more

Strange location next to a martial arts studio in an industrial part of town. My friend told me about it. She got a bottle of their 2009 Sarah that she really liked and 3 of us went there to check it out. A sign at the entrance said "freedom from sucky wine," except not a single bottle on the tasting list lived up to that promise, I had to dump it all. They said it was "unfiltered" and perhaps, that dead yeast was giving it a bitter, spoiled kind of taste. After that we went to "Uncorked" and tried the same Trvieso Sarah she got there before and it was quite good! We did not try any Sarah at the winery and all vintages were younger than 2009. We tried vertical Sarah later in November and it was very good, so I guess the yeast smooths out after 5 years... strange, never knew it works this way! The staff was pleasant, the refreshments offered were great and I loved the artwork! I just hope they will find a way to get that yeast taste out sooner vs. later! read more

Each bottle had a custom made label that made it impossible to forget not only the taste of the wine but its name. Both Dave/cash register and the wine pourer were very warm and unpretentious and met the beekeeper with Queen Bee on way out (they sell honey too).Tried a vertical Cabernet Sauvignon - 2010, 2009, 2006 and 2004. Wouldn't recommend the 2010 but it might just need some aging and the others were delicious in different ways. Variety of price points but $25 to $35 seemed to be their sweetspot. Today was a wonderful treat and David spent sometime educating us on the process of wine, the fermentation process, the bottling, different types of wine as well as the flavors. I was totally amazed that a winery (actually there are 4 in the same location) existed in this out-of-the-way nook in Campbell. Not only to they age their wine here, they also have a crush pad that you can see from Hwy 17, if you know where to look. Ray, one of the co-owners, is an absolute delight. He was happy to show us around, filling in the details on where they source their grapes, crushing, aging, bottling, and, of course, the retail and consumption side of the business. That alone made this a wonderful find. But, it is a winery, so what about the wines? Hopefully Kristen V's husband has found a special occasion to open the El Rey. For us, it was Mother's Day. The deep rich color, the fragrant bouquet, and big flavor paired wonderfully with the steak dinner. It is easy to see why San Jose steak houses sell this wine by the glass. While they are only open on passport weekends, you can taste their wines at Pinder, just a few store-fronts down, any weekend. If you are anywhere close-by, you're really missing out if you don't find a reason to stop by soon. read more

We LOVE this winery! The wine is fantastic, El Chupacabras is amazing! Deep rich flavors leave a lingering taste of yumminess on my tongue! My husband loves El Rey, though he hasn't opened any bottles at home yet!! Not sure what special occasion he is saving them for, but I can't wait! Amazingly complex wines! I love this type of boutique winery. They have a suite in a commercial complex in the industrial part of Campbell. The wines complexity just exploded in my mouth. This somewhat oddly (yet conveniently) located winery makes the best wine I've ever tasted. I've been a wine club member for over two years and continue to be delighted by their new releases. They make a delicious white blend (which varies from year to year... the 2011 is my favorite) and some amazing reds (Grenache, a Rhone (GSM) blend, Sangiovese, Cabernet & Syrah). Recently, they've added a dessert wine. Their wines all have unique, artistic labels and are named after legendary characters, which only adds to the fun.
