Was looking for an afternoon cap before heading home and we were walking around downtown Saratoga hoping to find a place that was open before 5 PM and we found Roudon-Smith. Al the owner was there working and happy to serve us! My girlfriend and I shared a tasting, it comes with 7 wines. I believe 2 whites, a rose, and 4 reds. Most of the wines he was serving were vintages and the some of the case pricings he is offering are great deals! I really enjoyed the lighter wines, the Voigner, Chardonnay and the Rose were quite good. I bought a bottle of Chard and Rose, and looking forward to opening them on a warm sunny day. We wanted to go to wine room walking distance from our dinner in downtown Saratoga. This place is small and bare bones with a short bar and some high top tables for two, but what really makes it experience is the owner. I wasn't expecting to be there for more than an hour, but he really walked us through and told stories about every wine on the flight which I enjoyed. (It bugs me when they just dumped wine in your glass and have you read the description on your own) Seven tastings of whites and reds for 10 bucks!! I had read reviews of someone complaining that they were mostly vintages, but first of all the wines arranged from 2013 to 2023, and secondly there wasn't a single wine on the tasting that I didn't enjoy. Even the Chardonnay, which is typically my least favorite type of white wine wasn't too buttery. At $10 a flight I didn't feel compelled to buy out my flight but you can with two bottles which we ended up doing since we enjoyed the flights. The bottles were really affordable ranging from 25 to 35 . I really couldn't decide between the Cabernet franc and the Zinfandel which were both complex yet with an easy finish Overall, a really nice experience to have before having dinner in downtown Saratoga read more

We stopped in Roudon-Smith winery tasting room on a Saturday afternoon about an hour before closing time. It was a lovely experience! We were served by the hostess, who was alone in the tasting room, but it was not problematic since there was only one other table in the room and they left halfway through our tasting. We enjoyed the wines that we tasted at Roudon-Smith and would return, especially if going out for dinner, because this would be a great place to have pre-dinner drinks. They had some excellent case deals going on and I would recommend keeping an eye on those, because they probably change. If you are interesting in starting a wine collection, this would be a great way to do it. read more

We dropped in Saturday around 5:30pm. The owner was pouring the wines and he explained the wines he poured. Tasting fee was $10 for 7 wines. Wished I could say I liked the wines. The Duet red blend was the best out of the 7 wines. Most of the wines smelled or tasted aged. It wasn't to our taste. They had live singer when we were there. read more

I stopped in here with a friend and had the best tasting of 6 wines for a VERY affordable price. AL was very kind and gave so much information with each wine he poured and turned the tasting into a wonderful experience and science lesson! We learned about the different areas each wine comes from and a bit on how they are created. Recommendations: EVERYTHING! My favorites were the Zinfandel, Cuvée, and the Chardonnay. All are very crisp and perfectly flavored with no heavy after tastes. Perfect for sipping and with meals. My friend and I ended up leaving with 3 bottles of wine each because they were TOO good. I'm so glad we came here and found this place. All of the wines were fantastic, even the ones I usually don't prefer (Al changed my mind about Zinfandel's!). This was such a lovely stop in downtown Saratoga. I highly recommend and I will most definitely be back to purchase Roudon-Smith wines as often as I can! read more

Met the owner as he was pouring wines at the SCM Grand Tasting event at the Mountain Winery. Was surprised at how much we liked the wines he had on offer at the event. On our way home, we stopped by the tasting room in downtown Saratoga to pick up a bottle of each of the wines we had tasted at the event. Nice little tasting room, but there was nobody there except the bartender and a creepy old woman singing to an empty room. No problem picking up the wines and the bartender was very friendly and responsive. Nicely priced wines also. read more

This was a fun tasting experience! They have 3 high top tables outside during this time. The wine tasting is $10 for 6 tastings. We tried a grenache blanc, chardonnay, pinot noir, tempranillo, a duet blend and a syrah. My favorites were the grenache blanc and syrah! The flavors of the syrah were bold and full bodied. I was pleasantly surprised with the grenache blanc because I am not that fond of whites overall but this was delicious and smooth. I liked the environment but would have loved an explanation of the different wines. It definitely makes the experience more personal and fun. At times in the beginning we were about to be given the next tasting when we hadn't finished the previous one (though we were told that we didn't have to rush but, still felt rushed haha). My husband and I came here after visiting Hakone Gardens earlier in the afternoon. It's located in downtown Saratoga and we were able to find free parking behind the tasting room. Seating is available indoors or outdoors, although if I remember correctly, indoors there is only one maybe two small tables with chairs and the rest of the seating would be at the bar itself. We chose to sit outdoors under the pop up tent they have set up and there was one other couple there besides us so plenty of distance between our parties. Tastings are $10 and their selection changes based on what they have available as they are a smaller winery. There were 6 wines the day we came, 2 whites and 4 reds. Al was our sommelier and was very well informed so I felt like we learned so much about all the wines we were able to taste. Our favorites were the 2013 Chardonnay which had a lovely color despite the year and smooth apple and spice notes. We also got a bottle of the Pinot Noir which won a gold medal at the SF Chronicle Wine Competition. Since we bought two bottles, our tasting fee was waived. They also offer discounts if you join their wine club should you choose to go that route. The tasting room was a nice cozy size for smaller parties and I would recommend it to those not looking to anything too pretentious and who just want to enjoy some delicious wine! read more

We were lucky enough to hold our daughter's 40th birthday party in the tasting room at Roudon-Smith. The room was the perfect size for the 15 of us and the location was also perfect. Al, the owner was a great help in getting us organized, supplying the really great wines and giving us a perfect venue. We had the event catered but Al was easy to work with and supplied us with a few things we forgot about. He was the perfect host - poured wine when asked, made conversation when talked to, gave everyone a brief history of his winery etc. All in all - just right. If you are looking for a small venue to hold a party/get together I highly recommend Roudon-Smith. Nice venue, great price and fun. Plus - their wines were excellent and priced fairly. read more

Came in here because we had an hour to kill before a concert at the Mountain Winery. This place exceeded our expectations by far -- for wines priced very modestly, this place over-delivers. An amazing wine tasting experience without having to drive up into the hills (some days I don't want to feel car sick!). Downtown Saratoga is adorable and Roudon-Smith is always our favorite place to go on the main drag. The tasting menu is always rotating with new selections, making it a new experience every time. Al has adapted to COVID with an awesome outdoor setup providing shade, stools and a safe tasting experience. The deals here really can't be beat -- if you like buying wine by the case, you will definitely be tempted here! Again, great deal for the excellent quality. The owner was very friendly, and spent time with us explaining the tasting notes of each wine, the process to make it, and even how he came to be in the wine business himself. In the land of clunky, over-alcohol'ed, raw, young, stringent, too thin/too flabby wines - Roudon-Smith is doing a great job. They have several versions of each varietal so they can be everything to everybody and it works. The Russian River Chardonnay was too creamy vanilla for me. But the Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay was just what mama likes: crisp, lean and fruit forward. You have to go to the winery and have a wine tasting. I have been to quite a few local wineries and I found this one to be the most pleasant out of them all. It is in a beautiful area and the wines are so lovely. My favorite is the Claret. It is a wonderful red so give it a try. Every once in a while I will see it at New Leaf so if you see it you got to get a bottle. Update: So I went back to this winery to get some wine before shoving off for the east coast. I was going to stay with my Aunts boyfriend who is Italian and grew up on a massive vineyard. He had given me the task of bringing a bottle of wine for a big dinner. That having been said he loves wine! I knew that I had to get the best. I went over to Roudon-Smith Winery and talked with a gentleman there and he recommended that I get the Pinot Noir. I did this and also bought my personal budget favorite a Claret. I took both these bottles with me to New Haven and when my Aunts Boyfriend took one sip of the Pinot he was in Italian Heaven. He was raving about the wine all night and wants to come visit me in Santa Cruz and make many special trips out to see the winery and talk with the owner and so on and so on. Our first stop on our Passport tour yesterday. First off, they had the best spread of food out of all the wineries we have visted to date. They actually hired a real wine/cheese pairing expert and it totally added to the experience. We tried the following: '07 Sauvingnon Blanc - YUM! We brought home a bottle of this one. '06 Chardonnay from Santa Cruz Mountains - not so much '06 Chardonnay from Russian River - Good '07 Syrah Rose - very tart Claret with Syrah, Zin, and Merlot - too much Merlot for my taste '05 Duet - smelled like bourbon '05 Cab - Yum! read more

1-star for the lowest ranking possible, one more star for the affection I feel for the place being 3 miles from my house. I bought a few cases of their 2005 Pinot, the sediment inside the bottle and corks, bottom of the glass when finished, isn't a sign of a rustic, organic, earthy wine, it's unrefined and unsettled. How long are you storing the wine before bottling? Most wineries prevent this by putting into temporary tanks - it will settle to the bottom. You drive all over France and Italy having homemade, family/farm wines for $5-6/a bottle, you come here, and a very average homemade wine is $25-$30? Really? Sorry guys, your winemaker needs more experience...filtering the sediment. read more

Roudon-Smith offers some fairly tasty wines: VERY fruit-forward and almost sweet. Overall, the wines were enjoyable but I didn't love them. I think this would be a good stop for those who are in the process of acquiring a taste for wine. The service was excellent. Our pourer was friendly, attentive, and helpful. The tasting room and grounds were comfortable and scenic. You're tasting in a wooded area deep in the mountains. Locals were trickling in periodically and striking up friendly conversation.
