Treehouse books is a wonderful little spot especially if you have little ones. I've noticed the differences in the books shops around the area. One is more of a wide variety but more modern, Tree house focuses more on kids and young adults, the Book Exchange is more like a library with collections, older , modern, categorized etc. this is a wonderful thing because you can't help but go through all of them. Treehouse does have a wide selection but over all vibe is bring your kids in and there is a flavor of literature for everyone. They are price very well and I was even able to get a replica ring of THE ONE RING ... TO RULE THEM ALL lol . Treehouse is a wonderful spot so don't pass it up. read more

During a road trip to Portland, my wife & I stopped in Ashland for a day.  While walking around downtown, we found this lovely children's bookstore.  Housed in a former bank, the staff here have crammed children's books, toys, games and other trinkets in every nook and cranny of the place, including inside the bank vault in the back of the store.  They have optimized the small space, offering the inventory of a much larger store.  Despite the vast number of titles available, the store is very clean and well organized.  The staff are also very helpful and were willing to answer all of our questions.  This is a must stop for us the next time we visit Ashland! read more

If the owners of Tree House Books were intending to replicate the experience of walking into a bookstore in Diagon Alley, then they have surely succeeded! This charming shop carries a robust selection of books catering mostly to children and the young adult crowd, along with stationery, cards, games, toys, clothing and a lot more surprises, tucked into every nook and cranny! This is the sort of place that is sorely needed in age of instant gratification and digital everything. Tree House Books shows a true appreciation for, and a celebration of, the wonderous analog media that is slowly being replaced by YouTube and emojis. Evocative in its ambiance, spaces like this help revive interest in the stories that are instrumental in producing educated, well-rounded and, most importantly, creative and free-thinking members of society. If you can't tell, Tree House Books really blew me away. There are a lot of bookstores out there, many of them slowly being crushed by the titans of the internet. Fortunately, even the mighty Amazons of the world have no power here. They shall not pass! I observed more than a dozen kids, dragging their parents behind them, fawning over virtually everything in the shop, especially the books. Seeing this filled me with joy, and the hopeful that, because of places like this, that magic still exists. Vivid are the imaginations that pass through these doors, becoming ever richer when they depart once more, hopefully armed with a bookbag full of thrilling tales, legends, and lore, waiting to be devoured by eager eyes and open minds. Huge selection of fun gifts! Books, flower presses, Harry Potter items including stuffies (there was a Dobby one - so cute!), cards, games, stickers, pens, pencils, multi colored pencil, fairy doors and soooo much more. The salesperson was very helpful and friendly. We left with a spiral notebook type sudoku book and some fun pencils for our daughter and would absolutely go back next time we're in the area! As a bonus, the entrance to beautiful Lithia Park is mere feet away and so worth the visit. read more

It's an Ashland treasure. Everything you would want in a children's bookstore. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable about different reading levels and interests. If you have a genre or book that you know your kid likes, they can give you excellent ideas and recommendations. This is a great place to browse and buy for tourists or locals alike. There are a lot of little interesting nooks and crannies to discover new stuff. I get very sad thinking about the day when our own kid outgrows this place. One of Ashland's mysteries is how it manages to support so many book stores and bakeries. Tree House Books has been hiding in plain sight for me until recently. It's located right on the Plaza and when you come down the stairs from OSF, it's right there. Tree House is a Children's bookstore and a nicely appointed one at that. Gayle and I always come up to Ashland sans kids, so it's not surprising that other places have been further up in line regarding my shopping choices. But the grandchildren sure do like these books (and such) and for us it was a welcome stop for this kind of generosity. read more

Instead of the low shelf in some grown-up bookstore, this little paradise is dedicated to kids of all ages-- brightly painted, whimsically decorated, and with a VERY well-curated selection of books that will delight the imagination and the intellect. I would give this store the extra star, but I took it off because of how small and cluttered it is. I do love the feel of a fairytale bookstore, with not just books. There's so many fairies, dragons, witches, and a lot of other magic tucked away in this bookstore. I wish I could spend more time in there but there's only so much room for so many people. I bought a snow globe with the castle in it for a friend. I'm very happy with my purchase, and like some other stores I wish I could afford more. read more

For these people, it really is about the kids. It is a wonderful atmosphere conductive to reading, learning and using the imagination. It is not unusual to walk in there and see everyone in costumes. Besides being THE best children's bookstores I have ever been in, they have activities, quests, and other challenges to keep kids interested in learning. I don't want to repeat what other reviewers have said, but honestly, I wish I had had a place like this to go to when I was young. I might have turned out completely different. We just did a 2 1/2 month tour around parts of the U.S. and Canada. In every town, my 8 year old and 11 year old couldn't wait to check out the book stores and toy stores everywhere we went. While vacationing in the area, I saw the store. There were some things displayed in the window that caught my eye. I was hungry so I ate an early dinner nearby. Unfortunately, this store was closed by the time I got back to it. I postponed my leaving town the next day specifically so I could visit Tree House. Wow, was it worth it! So many things in side to see and purchase. I managed to get gifts for both kids, my wife and myself. The little local handmade cloth bags were my favorite. Tree house books has been one of my favorite stores since I was 7 years old. You can buy anything in there from books and fairy doors, to magic potions. They also have many sections like wizardry, fairies, mermaids, anime, things for smaller kids and more! The staff always play a role in the mystical, fun atmosphere. Christmas and Harry Potter's birthday brings special events every year. They also have "gnome hunts' which kids can enjoy by going all over town, finding gnome doors that have different themes, riddles, and places. It's perfect for any occasion and for almost any age! If it's a present you're buying you might buy a card there as well. Beautiful graphics, poetry, quotes, and some plain old "happy birthday" cards is what you'll find. If you're into Harry Potter they've got books, stickers, gadgets and more. There's always a different display in the window, whether its theatre, super hero or wizardry, its always interesting and fun. They also require masks and sanitize and stay six feet apart. In Ashland for the Shakespeare Festival, I heard about The Tree House. When I walked, in expecting a bookstore, I actually discovered that I traveled to a land of enchantment under the gentle rule of Lady Jane Almquist of Ashland. A quasi-visible aura immediately surrounds the visitor whispering in his/her ear of faraway journeys to take and mysterious beings to meet by just opening a book. This is a wonderful store ... if you have older, school-aged children, but don't bring your pre-school kiddos here unless you like being eyed like a shoplifter. Though the store offers reading benches, our 3 year-old was scolded for reading a book in store. She was not mistreating the book, but we were told she could only read if we bought it. Apparently they have some designated "demo books" that children are allowed to touch, but otherwise, HANDS OFF! Odd way to run a store for children, and if you're going to be so fussy, why not post some polite signage alerting parents of your rules? It was humiliating. We'll take our kids to Bloomsbury from now on, where there's a nice little picnic table in the back of the store for kids to look through the books, and customers of all ages are treated with respect. read more

The further in you go, the larger it becomes. As a children's book store it is arranged so one can immediately find exactly what they are looking for . It is also arranged for discovery, designed to catch a child in passing and encourage them to reach for something that might become incalculable wealth in their hands. Do you remember the first book that caught you? You held it, you read it and nothing was ever the same again. Tree House is also full of delicious small treasures that delight the hearts children of all ages. It was my Mama's favorite place in Ashland and she was near 100. The owner, the magnificent Lady Jane Almquist is nothing short of a genius in her field. I spent years as a teacher of teachers specializing in reading. I know that for a child to 'want to read' is more important than anything else they will ever encounter - PreK-Post-Grad. A child who loves reading is not only statistically going to be one of the best students, they have been given the greatest gift any human can ever receive. It lasts a lifetime and is always there. Even in the darkest moments of my life, I always knew that Aslan was waiting, just for me. Lady Jane is an Imaginer, a designer of secret portals, mystic treasure hunts, secret clubs and magnificent celebrations that capture the imagination of children which goes go on to capture their hearts. This comes from an Early Childhood Educator, a parent, an author, a multi-published poet and former editor of a large press international parenting magazine. It also comes from a child, who still hungers for enchantment, secrets and those "Worlds as The Should Be." (Lloyd Alexander). I know that the children who venture through that rather ordinary door will find the most important thing they will ever find in their lives. "A room without books is like a body without a soul" (Ciero). A child without books is a tragedy. I would wish that all the people of Ashland know there is a treasure beyond measure, tucked on the Plaza, pretending to be just a book store. I was recently in Ashland during a week-long road trip through Oregon and Northern California. Ashland was our last stop before heading home, and my husband and I decided to check out the downtown area. We noticed Tree House Books and, as we have three children, figured it'd be a great place to stop. The bookstore was crowded, so my husband went in, assuming he'd be treated kindly, as he is a good person just trying to make his way through this world as best he can. At any rate, he was rudely accosted by a haughty clerk who told him they were closed, that it was 4pm and that he'd have to leave despite the fact the store was still filled with patrons, the door was not locked, and there was a sign up outside clearly stating that closing time 4pm unless busy. I do not personally feel like this is the best way to treat a customer, let alone a fellow human being. While we both appreciate and respect store hours, it was an honest mistake (due to the aforementioned circumstances) and I don't feel like it is in the best interest for a company to treat potential customers this way. So, if you find yourself in Ashland close to 4pm on a Sunday, try to steer clear of Tree House Books, especially if you aren't particularly a fan of being treated like subhuman garbage. read more
