I happened upon The Rookery while planning a visit to St Ives with my partner for the winter holidays, and I was impressed before we even arrived. The Rookery, run by Ron and Barbara Rook (a clever name is a good sign), was exactly what I'd been looking for. Ron and Barbara were responsive by email and phone, and incredibly helpful before and during our visit. This cozy B&B is in a prime location, just a short walk from the main streets of St Ives, but elevated enough to have a great view of the harbor. We had a very comfortable, very quiet rear-facing suite, so I can't comment on noise levels in the forward (street) facing rooms. Breakfast was fantastic every morning, with the obligatory full English fare and pretty much everything in between. They even had a vegetarian breakfast available, a rarity in most of the English B&Bs I've visited. Ron and Barbara greeted us each morning, cheery and full of great tips about local events and sights. Ron, a photography enthusiast, even took us on a photo tour of the nearby countryside when he found out that we also loved photography. (I'm sure this is not a standard service for guests, but we had a blast. It was one of the best parts of our trip, and demonstrates how dedicated they both are to making their guests happy.) I ended up having an experience very different from those childhood years, but discovered St Ives anew, with Ron and Barbara's help.

All the rooms have tea and coffee making facilities, on-suit bathroom with power shower (much better then mine) and flat screen TV with freeview. The icing on the cake is the mattresses' they are so comfy you could lay on them forever (not literally). All rooms have radiators and there is free WI-FI available. There is also a lounge with a large TV and Billiards/Pool table. Jackie the owner is a very nice lady, very knowledgeable, nothing is too much trouble. Breakfast (which is excellent) is served from 9-9.30am, there is a choice of cereals, full English to boiled eggs, all diets are cared for. The seafront is only five minutes up the road with Newquay zoo, and gardens only 15 mins down the road. It's so peaceful I will definitely be staying here again as I always look forward to visiting Newquay, it's the highlight of my year. The Harrington is a rare gem, and great value too.

I was staying here for 10 days back in 2011 while I was working in Falmouth ship yard and I must…read moresay from what I remember it was a nice place the people were very nice and fair there was one night I had been on the drink in the town all day I came back fell asleep and woke up and my bed was soaken wet with urine and they took my side on the matter when I blamed my room mate one night after being at the pub i was lying on my bed smoking a cigarette when the owners started banging on the door i flicked ash on my room mates bed and discarded the cigarette out the window and blamed my room maye for the smoking being the nice nature people who they are they beleived me and agrreed my room mate was a nuisance after my 10 days i had relocated to new guest house but several days after leaving i had been on an all day drinking session and had gotten confused at which guest house I was staying at to be honest I wasn't really sure were I was any way I proceeded to bang on the door at 01.45Am they calmly answered the door and reminded me what my name was and told which guest house I was now staying at and directed me in the general direction Safe to say this is a really nice hotel with nice people

Milber Guesthouse is a small, friendly B&B located about a 10 minute walk from the centre of…read moreNewquay, and about 5 minutes from Great Western Beach. It is ideally located for people who arrive from/go to Newqay Cornwall Airport, as bus stops are only 2 or 3 minutes away, respectively. I made the booking through booking.com, but as the landlady told me later they have to pay a 20% commission to the portal, so you might want to book on their own website (Google for milberguesthouse). It is a family-owned small business. The rooms are adequately decorated, double and single rooms are available. I booked a single room which was very tiny indeed (about 5m2), but clean. Shared bathroom facilities were no problem at all, I never ran into other patrons who wanted to use them at the same time. On the upper floor, there are a small WC and a larger bathroom with a shower, both clean and neat. Operating the shower "automat" did take a little to get used to. On the bottom floor you'll find a larger "living room" and a dining room with separate tables. Unlike other small B&B's they even have a breakfast menu that you can choose from. Unfortunately I was on a diet at the time and only had breakfast once (full English, of course); it was decent. Tea, and what passes for coffee in the UK are available, also orange juice. No complaints there. Milber Guest House offers free, password-protected WLAN in all the rooms. During my stay I talked to the landlord (husband) on several occasions, and found both him and his wife to be friendly and helpful. I paid €40 per day for my single room, including breakfast. Newquay is a popular beach town, especially with surfers, so expect prices to be elevated compared to less scenic countryside villages. Since I was out and about all day every day during my stay the amenities of Milber Guest House were all perfectly adequate to my needs. I recommend it.
