I know it's kind of silly that I keep coming back and giving 5 star reviews, but I wanted to offer a counterpoint to Steven's review. I bring both my bikes to CC--one is a nice roadbike that I take very good care of, and the other is my commuter. I had done a shameful job taking care of my commuter throughout college and haven't done much better keeping her protected from the Illinois winters, so when I brought her in she was in really bad shape--derailleur rusted in place, brakes starting to rust into place, chain way past replacement time, disgusting grips rotting off. If there was any bike to sneer at, this was certainly it. I got no such attitude from the mechanic I worked with. Yes, we laughed together at how long I had put off getting work done on the bike, but there was no condescension, no scolding me for the maintenance I clearly had neglected. He worked with me to come up with a game plan that would keep the bike in good working condition without spending too much money. I ended up paying $130 for a slew of parts (derailleur, trigger shifters, grips, chain, cassette, cables) and labor, including a complete tune-up. In my book, that is a steal. My trek rides like a totally new bike now. The guys at the shop are also SO nice--I struggle to get there before 6pm, when they close, and they nicely let me hang around til 6:20 when I arrived late to make sure we had talked about everything we needed to discuss. I have been frequenting this shop for years and the service is excellent. The staff are absolute professionals in repairing and assembling. The bikes aren't cheap, but you get what you pay for. If you want a bike that lasts for years and you will enjoy riding then get a Trek. It is worth the extra money. You can be sized for the bike seat and frame. So you will be comfortable on the bike. That is a HUGE difference between shopping here and other shops. If you want fast repairs and the ability to upgrade components shop here. If you want junk that isn't properly sized and tuned, can't be repaired, isn't worth being repaired go to walmart. read more

I don't really know much about bikes, and don't have a very good one myself, but I've always had good experiences here. They once fixed my boyfriend's bike with some parts they had lying around (because they don't actually make the right part anymore), and only charged him for a new part that they also had to put on. They're always very friendly and make sure that you're attended to, in my experience. A lot of the accessories in the shop are pricey, but good quality accessories always are. They seemed to have a pretty good selection of road bikes, women's bikes, etc. And there are always at least a few on sale when I browse around. read more

I called ahead to ask about the selection of women's cycling tights. I specifically asked about the quality of the chamois on the Bontrager Soltice tights. The man on the phone started talking a lot about pricing of shorts (which I wasn't asking about) and assured me that they have a full selection of tights including racing tights. I felt confident that I would find something that met my standards. However, when I showed up, I found out that in truth they had maybe 2 or 3 kinds and none had a chamois. I was pretty annoyed. Great staff, very helpful. I got a bike in the mail, and it came kinda screwed up, and I frayed the brake cable putting it together, and I had lots of issues trying to get the front brakes to work. I came in and they fixed me up, being a cheap bike that was probably put together in China, there was lots of issues with it, and they fixed it all up. The staff was very friendly and talked about everything he was doing. I will definitely be going back for any other help and any other bike merchandise I need!. read more

The people who work here are fantastic. First, they were extremely helpful in purchasing process and offered a free tune-up after 30-days. I never went for the free tune-up even though my wife and I had our bikes for over a year. I called Champaign Cycle a few days before moving back to Chicago and, despite having a backlog of service requests for weeks (in part because one of the technicians broke his collarbone), they fit in my tune-up. And it was still free. If I still lived in Champaign, I'd never consider going to another bike shop and just hope that I can find one in Chicago half as good as Champaign Cycle. read more

My mom and I stopped in to pick up my brother's bike (he was giving it to my mom) after it was serviced. We were attended to quickly. Someone rang us up ( a young lady) and someone else (a man) went to get the bike. When it came out, one of them noticed that it needed a little extra air in the tires, which they addressed right away. She explained what was done to the bike, we paid, and we were on our way. Everything seemed to be working well. They have stairs and ramp within the store to move bikes around. My brother's only complaint was that they waited a long time before telling him that he had to pick up his bike. read more

I owned a red trek hybrid for over 10 years, commuting to work. One day, found that a weld had broken/cracked on the frame. Champaign cycle replaced my bike at no cost, as treks have a lifetime warranty. Unexpected, and awesome. read more

Another reviewer says they let him use their tools - that was written in 2010. A few weeks ago I had a loose part and they refused to let me use a wrench - they said if they lent their tools, it would make them legally liable if something went wrong. They wanted to charge me $8 to tighten a nut. I just wanted to tighten a nut! Had to walk my bike home and use my own wrench. read more

I brought my Mavic rear wheel in for a check for bearings, freewheel and true. The tech said the freewheel probably needed some lubrication and I could pick it up the next day. I sent my partner in to pick it up and when she brought it home, the freewheel barely turned. So I went back the next day and the tech said his assistant had used the wrong lubricant and he would redo it, which he did. Taking him at his work, I brought the wheel home only to discover continuing excessive resistance. So I brought the wheel back and at first he could not figure out the problem. Then he discovered the a spacer washer was missing. In order to replace this he further dismantled the freewheel and a pawl spring popped out and disappeared. We searched for 20 minutes for the spring. So he ordered a replacement. It is now 10 days later, the wheel is finally ready. I missed some great riding days. Rich read more

I can't recommend this place to many people. My wife and I decided we were going to start riding every now and then but I had sold my bike years ago. She had picked up an inexpensive but brand name bike at a yard sale for a song. We went to Champaign Cycle Co because the tires were flat so we asked the guy if we could get new tires and just give the bike a once over for safety. He wasn't even willing to look at the bike, he just sneered at it and said, "We don't work on those bikes here." The only good thing I can say about them is that he recommended one of their competitors to us and our experience there was great. What we didn't have a chance to tell him was that I was also going to buy a bike for myself that day. We went to their competitor who was very friendly, took a look at my wife's bike ON THE SPOT gave us an estimate (that was accurate) and told us to come back in a couple days to pick it up which earned them a few hundred dollars on sale of a pretty nice bike plus the work and new accessories we bought for my wife's bike. Maybe your experience at Champaign Cycle will be better if you paid a thousand dollars for your bike or imported it from Europe or something, but if you're just a casual bicyclist I would look elsewhere, the impression that I received from the 5 minutes that we were in their store was that we were note welcome there. read more

stopped over at champaign cycle yesterday just before closing. it was a spontaneous trip as i realized i had broken a spoke and wanted to get a new one. nice guy (didnt catch his name) came out, took my wheel inside, and a few minutes later, came out and had already fixed the broken spoke. asked him how much i owed him and he said that he had had a tough day and wanted to do something nice for someone. he definitely didnt have to do that but his kindness inspired me to write this review. ive never shopped at champaign cycle before but when i need something for my bike, im going to go there! thanks again! read more

This place is a bit off the beating, central heart of Champaign, but it's worth the drive (or ride!). The staff is welcoming, helpful, unpretentious, and patient. Inventory is diverse and of high quality goods (and the staff actually knows about each piece of equipment they sell). They have indoor FREE spin classes during the winter, which is a very good event to participate in. The store makes you feel proud to cycle when you walk in there, and it is such a breath of fresh, authentic air from the ish that is Durst Cycle. Axel is the lead service tech there, knows his wrench stuff, and is an accomplished racer himself. Their service and retail prices are very fair. These are the good guys! read more
