I have been going to Trephin for over a decade for cut & color, and I have always left looking picture perfect with shiny, bouncy beautiful hair that gets me a TON of compliments, including from other hair stylists I go to for blow-drys. I have curly, frizzy, fine hair and it is not easy to style and cut. Nate, the owner/co-owner is the best colorist and also bang & shag cutter anywhere, especially if you have curly hair! The best part, or cherry on the top, is that, unlike other salons where you go home looking great and then can't get your hair to look "that way" on your own, ever -- @ Trephin, Nate will literally sit down with you and go over your hair AND scalp needs, lifestyle (e.g. wash and go, or blow dry queen?, AirWrap or regular?) and in my case allergies and let you know exactly which products to use to replicate that look at home, plus what to do to keep your hair in a very healthy condition - which is the basis for all great hair. For example, Nate recommended drops for my hair which also repair the hair, double duty. And a conditioner that I leave in as a styling creme. Because of this I was finally able to get my hair healthy enough to grow long like I wanted to for the first time since I was a teenager. He also helped my daughter with dandruff. I've seen him sit down for 20 minutes with someone who had multiple allergies and find her products to use. He also gives samples of some of the shampoos/conditioners if needed. I found my hairstylist at Trephin on TikTok because I was looking for someone to do my hair since moving to Boston. My appointment was moved up in the day and I was promptly seen by my stylist and I was whisked to the shampoo bowl to get started. Ash is very knowledgeable, the salon space was very clean. She used only quality tools and products on my hair. Booking an appointment is super easy and they have plenty of availability which is a plus. I'll definitely be returning. It's 2024, and I've been coming here since 2011. I've never had a bad cut or color, and it sounds cheesy, but this salon changed my entire face shape/hair health by the products and color brands they use. I look better now in my forties than I did in my twenties. They also are great about giving tips for how to towel dry at home or combing without ripping your hair, and what shampoo/styling brands are best for what hair type. Over the years I've seen Mo, Alex, Nate, Joe, Ashleigh, and Kacey and again, I cannot stress how much I have NEVER had a bad cut or color! My two "regulars" for the past few years have been Nate for cut / color and Ashleigh for color. I love that the shop keeps your card on file with the history of what colors/styles you've had done so they can go back and review for any changes or things you want to try. I've brought my mother here who keeps her hair short and buzzed, my husband who has Asian hair, and the salon has revamped and now includes serious choices for Black extensions / 4C hair, waxing, nail art, and reiki. I truly would follow these people to the ends of the earth for how much they have improved my style and created such an inclusive and welcoming space to all. I had a Reiki session with AJ and it was just awesome. AJ has a very warm and welcoming personality. You can tell that he clearly is very into what he does. I was hoping I'd be able to leave a good review for Trephin as they were a recommendation from a friend (who has great hair!) and my experience from booking to arrival was fantastic. I will also throw out there that they are very responsive. But that's where the good ends. I wasn't able to see my friend's stylist, but I was really excited the salon could fit me in and match me another available stylist, who was really personable and sweet. And that's really where the positive part of this stylist's review ends. I came in for a full balayage and a cut and when I say my hair is absolutely ruined, I mean on every level. My color is so botched, it is quite literally irreparable. I wanted full golden balayage over my naturally dark brown hair - something I have successfully had done for nearly two decades. While my haircut is bad, the color is horrific and that's where I'm going to concentrate this review. The style and execution of the balayage application was distracted and sloppy. This should have been my first clue. There was no care in carefully painting or coating my hair. Even worse, the toner was not correct the first time, so I had to be reshampooed and toned again. She didn't show it in her face, but I could hear in the stylist's voice as she spoke to the salon assistant that my color didn't come out as she expected. At this point she forgot I wanted a gloss, and that was added after the second botched toner. The salon assistant (who was actually the best part of the experience), gave me a blow out and said "it looks great." I wanted TO CRY. I got up close to the mirror and my roots were pulling a red color, my ends looked white, and the rest of my hair was inexplicably splotchy. I held back tears, hoped it was the salon lighting, and let the assistant put some waves in my hair to see if it would blend. The stylist who did the color saw my face and immediately acknowledged the color was off. She said "I tried to tone your hair twice but I can't keep the ends from being ashy. If you want to come back I can make your hair darker." Which is not what I asked for. But neither were red roots - I have no idea where those came from. I honestly didn't know what to do, so I paid, tipped, and left. And it got so much worse once I got outside. In natural light, my roots are bright coppery-orange, my ends are stringy, dried out, and stripped of all color, everything in between is patches of rusty orange and white. My Uber driver even commented that it was very bad color. MY UBER DRIVER! When I got home and received a similar review from my boyfriend, I wrote to the salon. Where the stylist acknowledged the color was subpar in the salon, I figured they'd work with me and perhaps refund some of the cost of the very expensive hair mistake. I found out, despite the fact that the stylist openly discussed and acknowledged the bad hair color, they do not offer refunds of any kind in their policy. They offered for me to try and shampoo it a couple of times and if that doesn't work to come back and try again. For free.... The problem is, my hair is - like I said - irreparable. I took their advice and shampoo'd my hair, but it is so damaged that it started pulling and snapping off like silly putty. I have pictures and video of this because if I heard this story I wouldn't believe it without proof. We'll I have plenty of that. I will not drag individual stylist names through Google reviews, but please do your research and know that whether the results are good (if you're lucky) or absolutely horrific and the worst cut and color of my life like me - you're absolutely paying for it. $400 dollars in my case.... Plus whatever I have to shell out at another salon to fix this mess. read more

I just had the most amazing reiki crystal session with AJ at Trephin! So cool that there is this little zen room in the salon, you would never know it and you feel totally transported to somewhere else! I didn't know what to expect so I went in open minded. Regardless of how many times I've seen her she asks the same questions as if I were a new customer to make sure I get EXACTLY what I want... every time. I was able to get an appointment when I needed to. The salon wasn't too difficult to find, and there is a parking garage nearby, so it's a quick walk over. They also validate parking, so you save a couple bucks. They set me up with Ally who took the time to understand what I wanted and was able to color match my touch up color. I liked the fact that they provided a blanket as they washed my hair because it was a little chilly in that section of the salon. It's been a few months so I decided to refresh my haircolor and walking in, everyone I had interacted with the last time, greeted me warmly and treated me more like a friend then a client. Willingness to hand over $100 just to dye my hair (that I used to do at home for $20) says a lot. Kenneth is THAT good, and I love our girl talk. He remembered all of the stuff I rambled about last time (like my theory on being Doomed in the dating scene, and how quickly that changed). We bonded over crazy roommates, chitchatted about boys, events and music shows. It was nice. Plus, two and a half hours of kicking back and being taken care of is quite nice. This review reflects my experience with the receptionist mostly. Since it was so impossible to get an appointment I cannot comment directly on the quality of their services. I called to request an appointment for cut and color and was told I needed to have a consult first. The consult consisted of nothing more than emailing a few pics of what I wanted my hair to look like. The process of the initial email to getting an appointment scheduled took a week with some prodding on my end. THEN on the day of my appointment the receptionist calls to say that the stylist is out. Irritating, but ok, maybe she got sick or something. I was offered a cut and color by two other stylists that same day and I decided to go for it. THEN the receptionist calls me back an hour or so later to tell me that stylist #1 doesn't take new clients on the weekend, weekday only (Seriously? Because it makes that much of a difference what day of the week it is to cut someone's hair?) and that stylist #2 doesn't "feel comfortable" doing my hair because she was not part of the initial consult (Again, seriously? She couldn't do the "consult" by looking at the half dozen photos I emailed?) IMO these pretentious stylists need to get over themselves, but regardless, the receptionist should have been aware of their specificities BEFORE booking the appointment with me. The receptionist offered to rebook me with the initial stylist TWO WEEKS LATER later. At this point I was over it and decided to get my hair done elsewhere. For the hundreds of bucks I was going to spend you would think these people want my business instead of making it impossible to get an appointment. read more

I got a bad cut elsewhere, asked for long layers but got a short shag. I came to Trephin and explained to the stylist I wanted to grow it out to a bob, understanding it would take multiple trims and some time. Apparently the stylist does not understand if you keep cutting the same significant amount from all layers, the client's objective of a blunt cut, all the same length, cannot happen. It was four MONTHS between first and second appointments with the stylist. At the second appointment she agreed to to my request of no more than a "dusting" off the longest layer, which was less than 1/4 inch from my hairline at the neck, then cutting the neck and sides to approximately that same length. That didn't happen, unless a dusting is actually an inch at some parts and more at others. The "shag" part at my neckline that I particularly wanted gone, I stated this at the start of the each appointment as an expectation, was still longer than the sides. In addition, one side is a noticeably longer than the other and the back is also uneven. I'm in search of a better stylist at a different salon. read more

I love seeing Dora at Trephin. She is very approachable and friendly, which immediately puts you at ease. What's more, she actually listens to what you want and doesn't try to force what she wants to do on you. She is very professional. Since moving to Boston 4+ years ago I've tried about 5 salons, and I can confidently say that Trephin is my go-to salon for as long as I'm living in the area. I followed Maura to Trephin from another salon, and there is literally no one else I would trust with my hair. I've found that a lot of stylists in Boston struggle with feminine pixie cuts, so finding someone like Maura who makes my hair look so good every dang time is a straight up blessing. Her cuts also grow out beautifully, and I've been able to save money by not having to go as often for full cuts. The salon itself is gorgeous and has a really friendly atmosphere--you're always greeted the second you walk in the door (the wine doesn't hurt either!). Stylist, Brian Rand & Colorist, Moe Smith have done it!! They have branched out and opened their own top salon in downtown crossing!! Located in the heart of downtown crossing on the side street, of Temple Place....this is the new HOT salon. With the large bright windows, italian leather chairs, and simple furniture....you immediately feel relaxed. I found Brian after years of searching for the "perfect" hair cut. I have naturally spiral curly hair and Brian knows how to cut it so each curly is perfect. I leave his chair with a style not a big frizzy pom-pom (girls with curly hair...you know what I mean.) I desperately needed a haircut. My hair was growing out and it has lost all shape. I had side bangs, weird layers, and icky ends...so I went on Yelp and found the most convenient and best rated salon in the downtown area. And here I am.. Before that, I tried to book another appointment at an up and coming salon, but they said they're booked until October. WHAT? You serious?! That was too ridiculous for me and inconvenient. How could you possibly ask someone to wait that long? I ditched that and was able to book an appointment at Trephin in the afternoon after calling in the morning. Later that day, I had trouble trying to find the building Trephin was in. I felt like it was some secret society hidden on Temple Place. At one point, I was misinformed and kept beeping the buzzer at the wrong buliding. Embarassing. Once I found the right building and got in (by a lovely couple who opened the door, thanks!), I went to the second floor and saw a sign with a fancy T on it. I feel like an elite member already. I walk in and wow, everything is clean cut and the room is a beautiful dusty purple color. It's a soothing atmosphere and I was greeted by nicely by the receptionist (along with some iced tea). I had an appointment with Nate, who sat me down and asked what I wanted. i was open to anything but I wanted to keep my long hair but trim it up a bit and fix up some ends. I also asked what he thought I should do if I were to get a short cut. He dismissed the bob and shoulder length and suggested that if I want shorter, I would have to go short, not mid-length. However, I feel like he could have been more helpful in finding me the best cut for my face. I felt like I was trying to suggest the ideas rather than the other way around. The wash process was just ok, nothing spectacular. The girl just washed my hair and that was it. It's usually my favorite part in getting a haircut because it's so relaxing and this is where Trephin lost points with me. The haircut process was quick and my hair turned out a little shorter, with even layers, and a middle hairline. It was a little different since I haven't had a middle line for 5 years or so. He said that that was where my hair naturally fell, and that because I tried to side part it, my bangs would always fall over my eyes. Hm, interesting. When he blow dried, my scalp was screaming for help a bit. Hot stuff. Overall, the experience was good but not great. The service is exceptional but my overall satisfaction with my wash and cut was lacking. I do have very specific taste but I was very open to new suggestions and I felt like I wasn't offered enough options. I wanted kickass hair but I just came out with "I could work with that". I think the ambience and setting of the salon does make up for some of its cons for today, but I wasn't wowed to the point that I would come back. read more

Beautiful salon with amazing people with great personalities. However, I was not satisfied with the quality of the blowout I got. I have thick curly/kinky hair and my stylist used low heat with the blowdryer which left lots of kinks in my roots and general frizz. I suggested he use a flat iron to touch up but again used low heat so my hair looked poofy. When it comes to hair, makeup and overall salon service I seek out the best and I'm willing to pay for it. Especially on a Sunday. After Tweeting my own "Sunday Style Challenge," and calling more than three salons, I was still unable to find a stylist willing to do my hair for an important Sunday event. Then I called Trephin based on a tip from my cousin (who always has a great cut!). Lucky for me, they were happy to accommodate my request. Generally closed on Sunday, owner Brian Rand agreed to have me in based on the conversation I had with their receptionist. He couldn't believe that I was having such a tough time finding someone to work with and took the opportunity to really showcase Trephin's stellar approach to customer service with a potential new client. My main direction: more runway/editorial than prom and the style had to look soft, but STAY. In the next two hours I learned that Brian and I were in NYC at the same time in overlapping industries. As we chatted, I learned of his interest in art, design and architecture. This definitely influences how he does hair, and the results are stunning and completely photo-shoot ready. With Trephin, Brian and his partner Moe (who specializes in color) have built a sleek, sexy, open space. Airy, yet intimate with a look, feel and service approach uniquely it's own. Trephin completely goes against the typical nature and "turn-and-burn" mentality of many well known Manhattan salons I've visited. Pricing is equivalent if not less than other Boston salons. I was given a price range on my up-do before I even came in. While it was at the top of the range, it was well worth it. The job was not rushed and I was beyond pleased with the result. Located in the Downtown Crossing area, parking can be tough, so if you can take the T in (Park Street is closest), I'd say that's the best way to go. I paid $14 in a lot about two blocks away. If you park in the Hyatt hotel lot, Trephin can validate for you. Lastly, here's a tip about tipping: If any salon is willing to take you during off hours, tip generously. VERY generously. I got extremely lucky and found both Nina (for color) and Jen (for cuts) at Trephin at the start of 2015. Salon: Big, airy, open design and gorgeous but chill vibe. They have Smith & Cult polish to do your nails while you wait for color magic, or an eclectic batch of mags and BOOZE. Sweet, accommodating staff, whether it's letting you charge your dumb phone or giving amazing head massages. Nina: When it comes to hair color, she knows exactly what she's doing. She's bold but methodical, and produces the kind of beautiful results that make other women run through traffic to cross the street and ask you who did your hair. She is not happy unless you are over-the-moon. Also the gentlest, funniest personality. Jen: Super skilled, confident, and totally delivers. Measures twice to cut once, etc. Bonus points for not sugar-coating anything and also being hilarious! While I'd have loved to have found them BEFORE bouncing all over Boston (from Shag to the usual Newbury Street suspects and a few disasters-by-comparison in between), there's no way I'm putting my head in anyone else's hands while I'm still here. read more

After a long summer of growing out a short whispy cut, I noticed that my hair was slowly transforming into a crossbreed of Justin Bieberness and a mild mullet. Throw in some salt & pepper patches and split ends, and you had me in a nutshell. I needed a stylist. A great one. And fast. Working in downtown Boston has its advantages - and being close to Trephin is one of them. I called the salon on a Friday and asked about availability for a cut and color consultation. After giving the receptionist a heartfelt apology for the head of hair that I would be bringing into the salon, I was told I could be seen at 11:00 am the next day for a cut with Dayna and a color consultation with Moe. As luck would have it, I ended up being SEVERELY late for my appointment. Thankfully, this was not a problem on Saturday (and if it was, there was no huffing and puffing or disdain shown toward me at all, which I was super grateful for!) But enough about me. This is about Trephin. Oh, Trephin... The atmosphere is very cozy - modern and hip, not snobby and stuffy. I wasn't treated like I was someone in need of fixing at this salon, which unfortunately seems to happen at other high-end salons I've tried. Everyone there was exceptionally friendly and pleasant. I immediately felt welcome there. The wash and scalp massage I received were so relaxing that I could have passed out in the chair. The products she used were delicate, and they left my hair feeling smooth and bouncy after my style was complete. I wish I could remember the name of the girl who gave me that scalp massage, because she deserves the recognition. It was a fabulous addition to my experience! Dayna was fantastic about my consultation and my cut. She took the time to speak with me about what I wanted and how I wanted my hair to look long-term. She asked how I typically style my hair, how it naturally falls, and what products I use. She told me what she thought would work best. Boy, was she right. She gave me a subtle cut that worked perfectly; she kept the length and some layers, fixed my bang, and snipped off all the frayed ends from the razor cut I originally had. My hair is healthier, softer to the touch, and looks great. Want to know the best part? I barely have to do anything to make it look good! The cut Dayna gave me is fun but still effortless to style, which is perfect for me and my hectic schedule. After my cut was finished, Moe took the time to sit with me and discuss my color options. She really took the time to listen to what I wanted and offered her advice and expertise. I haven't had my color yet, but I'm confident that she will do a beautiful job. I'll keep you posted! I feel like I've been following my stylist Sean all over this damn city! I first saw him at Shag in south Boston when i lived there, but he left so I followed him all the way to Cambridge to Aveda. Now I've followed him to Trephin. oh what a girl will do for a good hairdresser! But I'm not complaining at all. I love Sean and his haircuts and I would probably follow him to the other side of the country if I had to, (well...maybe not) but I really hope this is the last move he makes for a long time. Trephin is an absolutely gorgeous salon with custom furniture, beautiful details, and all sorts of fun oddities and knickknacks to look at (the staff is pretty nice to look at too!) but nothing about it is over done or garish. it's perfect. the products all smell like heaven, it's relaxing even when it's busy, the music is superb, the experience is personal and comfortable and my bearded buddy (Sean) seems more at home than he ever was before. Trephin also has the first shampoo sinks that don't feel like they've put your neck into some sort of torture device, and above the sinks, a beautiful sky light to look up at while getting washed. I had my first appointment at Trephin last Friday and it was great. The woman I spoke with on the phone to schedule the appointment was very nice, especially considering I was calling without much notice. She even explained in helpful detail how to find the place since it is a little difficult to find...but not THAT difficult, so don't worry. When I walked in, there were a couple of people (who I assume both work there), chatting in the waiting area and they were very friendly and got me checked in for my appointment right away. My appointment was with Sean and I was really quite nervous because I wanted a short haircut after having pretty long hair for the last 25 years of my life (i.e., my whole life). He was relaxed about it and confident that the short style would work for me. He didn't offer too many opinions, but when I asked him what he thought, he did tell me his opinion on the length. And he did a great job with the cut. I definitely felt like he wanted the cut to be awesome and he spent some time grooming the edges of the cut and making sure all the pieces were falling how he wanted them to fall. I've gotten a million compliments and even more importantly, I am super happy with my new cut - I love it. And that is a big deal because I totally expected to walk out of the appointment sobbing so hard I couldn't find the T after losing my long hair. But Sean was awesome. I had my first partial highlighting appointment with Kenneth and I was more than pleased. He is a pleasure to deal with and is incredibly talented. And the price for his services was in no way out of line. I've paid more for sub par service! I will definitely continue going to Kenneth for all of my highlights. I've been bouncing around from salon to salon throughout Boston for years. I was referred to Trephin by a colleague and will never go elsewhere! Central location, beautiful space, and friendly service staff. Daleen has been cutting my hair for years, so I was excited when she moved to this funky downtown salon. I have a pixie cut, and she has worked with me time and again to change up the cut when I've gotten tired of the look. I always look great when I leave her capable hands. I visited Trephin for the first time today. When I arrived, I found myself standing awkwardly in front of the buzzer downstairs, until someone who worked there came to my rescue as they were arriving. She was so kind and helpful, and she actually ended up washing my hair. My stylista was just as amazing. I only needed to utter a few sentences, and she seemed to know exactly what I was looking for. I just had my hair cut by Sean at Trephin and am really happy, this is no small feet as I had long hair (half way down my back) but it was thin and unhealthy and decided (nervously) to get it all chopped off into a short bob. I had very specific ideas and Sean listened. The cut was everything I wanted but not necessarily what I pictured and this is a great thing. He really took his time and I felt that he was as concerned with the end result as I was. All other staff were also friendly and the scalp massage before the cut helped me relax. A great hair cut can make you feel new and refreshed and that's what I feel like. I would highly recommend!! I've always been the type of girl who can never settle down with just one colorist or stylist but my philandering ways have changed since I've met Kenneth Fielding and Nate Prescott. Both were employed at Shag prior to Trephin and once they moved, I followed. I followed because the two are very professional and passionate when it comes to their skill...I have to attribute a percentage of my good looks to them. On another note, Trephin is nothing I had anticipated. Once you walk in the door you know that you're going to walk out looking kick ass. I like the intimate vibe of this place. For the first time, I was able to have a conversation without yelling over loud obnoxious club music during my cut and color. Everyone in this place exudes a honest and genuine vibe. Not only are the people great, the decor is one of a kind. Clean lines, warm, inviting and very soothing. This place is meant to bring an immediate state of relaxation once you walk through the door and I would agree, it does just that. This review is long overdue. I've been a client of Trephin for over a year now. I see Nina for my color...let me just say, I am incredibly neurotic and picky about my hair and whenever I get color, I tend to be a bit paranoid. I trust Nina implicitly! She has consistently done an incredible job with my hair. I've done a bit of balayage, full foils, partial foils (3x I think), and about every 6 weeks I get a semi-permanent glaze. She seriously nailed my natural hair color and lifted the highlights to look super natural. She also always patiently takes the time to listen to my idea of what I want my hair to look like and offers great advice. She also got me into evo products which are ridiculous...my hair has never been so soft, silky, and healthy looking! Jen, an apprentice and good friend, repeatedly gives me impeccable haircuts, like the best in my entire life - however, I don't think she's taking clients just yet, so do see Sean or Brian. I usually see Sean for bang trims (he always does them perfectly, no lie), but he also cut my fiancé's hair and did a superbly stylish cut - like, perfect, spot on. Lastly, the salon is the epitome of cool. The staff is welcoming and efficient, the salon is always impeccably clean, and the location is convenient by public transportation (Orange Line Downtown Crossing stop or Green Line Park St stop). In terms of pricing, it's absolutely worth every penny and reasonable priced for a major city. I know I'm gushing, but this salon is incredible. A must for anyone needed a cut or color. Seriously. I've been going to Ashleigh at Trephin for my color for a few months now and she and the whole Trephin team are so amazing. She helped me find the perfect shade of red for my skin tone and I could not be happier. Also, I have classic biracial (black and white) texture hair and Ashleigh knows exactly how to care for it. I always leave feeling beautiful. The culture and vibe of the salon is so welcoming and comfortable while still feeling very modern and polished.
