You need 1) a waterfall that generates a lot of mist 2) dark surroundings 3) full moon (2 days before and two days after) 4) fir the full moon to be a 42 degree angle over said waterfall. This is the only place in the Western Hemisphere that meets these conditions monthly, and you will see lots of other Moonbow chasers during that period. The park is stunning anyway, with dramatic boulders and loads of gorgeous hiking. Not to mention, the area borders on the Daniel Boone National Forest, so there are arches and vistas all around. Currently, DuPont Lodge is closed for renovation within the park, however the Woodland Cottages (where I stayed), cabins, and campgrounds are good to go!

This was the second time that I've visited Holly Bay campground. It's located in Daniel Boone…read moreNational Forest and on Laurel Lake and just a few miles from Cumberland Falls. It's my favorite campground when I'm looking for seclusion. It seems like you're hours from the city, but it's just about an hour and a half from Lexington and 20 minutes or so from the interstate. The Grove is it's sister property, so if there isn't spots available here, there may be some at The Grove. Loops D & H are available via reservation, the other loops are walk up. This time we stayed in loop G area... G2 was our site and through the trees, you could see the lake. The paved pad was long and then there were steps that led to the huge graveled fire pit area. Perfect for tent camping. It wasn't considered a premium or double site, but compared to state resort park sites, it was at least twice as big. The shower house was decent. The water cold and the fact that the water on the shower was controlled by a button that you had to push every 30 seconds, was a bit annoying. I was thankful for hand soap and toilet paper though. The lady at check-in was a hot mess. She kept answering her cell phone and the landline phone instead of waiting on us. She didn't know which sites were lake side and wouldn't let us pay, look to choose a site, drop off and come back. She made us tow the camper down the narrow paths, choose a spot and then come back to pay with the camper in tow. Then it took her at least 10 minutes to write up the ticket, etc. After a 45 minute fiasco, we finally set up in the dark. Lesson learned... Remember what site # that you want, if you've not been there, study the map before you go. Things to consider are if you want to be by the lake, the shower house, or away from other sites. It's an American Land and Leisure run campground. I can't really figure out the ins and outs of the structurally run campgrounds... I've stayed at the Cor of Engineer, state park and KOA campgrounds. The American Land and Leisure campgrounds and sites seem to be the biggest and the most inexpensive.

This campground spoiled us! The sites are huge & so private. Not a bad site on the grounds! Just…read morebeautiful & peaceful! We stayed in B10 & it was exceptional. We reserved our site online a month ahead or so. Much of the campground is non-reservable & there was plenty of open sites throughout the weekend. Our site was Next to the bathroom (no shower in this bathroom, but showers were a bit further down). Despite being next to the bathrooms, our site was so tucked away & wooded we never noticed anyone walking by. Plenty of hiking trails & a few lead to the lake. The lake is so clear, you can wade or swim at your own risk, it's not restricted unless you go down to the marina. The marina is busy! Lots of boating going on. There also a little place to get some pizza & burgers at the marina, nothing stellar, but something if you need it. A 10-15 minute drive towards Holly Bay (follow Holly Bay signs) to the public beach. we loved it since the water was super clear & nice. Good idea to bring an umbrella or some kind of shade & lots of inflatable stuff. The beach is on top of the spillway & there's likely more beach accesses closer to the Holly Bay Area that we didn't have time to explore. The lake is nice, you can safely explore the swimming areas outside the tiny designated swim area. There are dangers if the water is high, but there are plenty of giant signs to warn you of those if the conditions arise. It was hard to imagine in August the water being high enough, but there was plenty of evidence of the water, likely when the dam is intentionally released. We drove through Holly Bay campground, & honestly believe Grove is better in a lot of ways...larger, secluded sites, but Holly Bay has a few ones with amazing views of the lake, which Grove does not. At Grove you have to hike to the lake & it's further to public beach than Holly Bay. It also seemed that Holly Bay could be noisy with the heavier boat traffic & closer proximity to the lake. We had only positive experience with the camp hosts. They met us at our site to check us in & delivered firewood & ice as we needed. They were helpful explaining the rules & explaining the issues to avoid bear issues. Cumberland Falls are a 15-20 minute drive & full of activities we didn't have time to explore all of them such as hiking, kayaking, falls boat ride, ziplining...the falls are beautiful & a short hike around the area is worth the trip. Could've easily spent days there. We stopped to take a look at the park campground & we were so glad for staying at Grove. The sites there are tiny & close together. There was a nice pool, but even campers pay a fee to use it. The lodge & cabins looked amazing though & the pool is free for those guests. But aside from the positive aspects of Grove Campground there are other campers out there who may not like the following: -very few full hookup sites. We had water & electric & that was fine for 3 nights. -and next was the strict rules for no washing of dishes or anything outside, which I understand since it's a beautiful protected national forest, but it made our gray water tank fill up quicker than usual. There were no gravel pits like we often find in Ohio state Parks where you can take your dishes to wash. -showers--Ran hot & cold, mostly cold which in August was more refreshing than uncomfortable, but during cold seasons this would be an issue. There was some trick we never figured out to bring on the hot water, it was random & intermittent.

We paid by honor…read moredue to the time of day there was no staff, that morning the staff was rude saying that we never checked in and didn't receive a reservation pass nor told us check out times when it was a pay by night. The next day around 11 a staff member pasted by and stared but said nothing. We went to the lake shortly after and when we arrived back there was a note on the left car saying we stayed past due and needed to pay for another night. when we started packing up a staff member came by and in a rude manner asked if we are finally leaving, we explained to them as we were never made aware of check out times and we were sorry. Also explained to her that if we were supposed to be out at a certain time then the man that drove by at 11 should have said something or the woman that told us we needed a reservation pass say something about times. The staff was extremely unwelcoming and we will not be recommending to others. Anytime we had driven past a staff member and waved or said hi it was always an odd look or nothing at all.

RV and tent camping are both available. It's part of the federal Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. We had non-electric site A-12 which was conveniently near the rest room. It was appropriately sized for us and was on a slight slope; others might need a larger site and to bring leveling blocks. Mid-April was still relatively cold so the campground was quite empty -- and quiet. We were concerned that we might hear traffic from 58 but it was a non-issue. The campground is in Virginia, in close proximity to the point where Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky meet. There are many hiking trails nearby, and it's only a few miles from the visitors center for the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.

We had water hook-ups, newly built covered stalls (all 8 horses), and a stock trailer to use to at no additional cost. I can see their continued improvements such as a cute shower house/bathroom. They were only a phone call away, and would come visit and talk to us about their plans and asking our thoughts on how to make things better/different. They also had a refrigerator & freezer available if you needed to buy ice or water. I definitely think they are on the right track for horse people. We were able to ride out from camp on the first day, and the second & third days, we trailered out to other trailheads. With eight riders, we did have to make a couple of trips but it was manageable, and the riding was wonderful and challenging. They are tucked nicely behind a grove of trees. You never know the main rode is just a few yards away. Dog friendly too!

The views are unbelievable and the owners are some of the nicest folks you will ever meet!! This is a place where you can be as active as you want to, walk around the campground and enjoy the beautiful sites or be more adventurous and walk some trails, maybe even hike to the sand cave or white rocks!! If that's not what you are feeling up to, it's a perfect place to simply kick back, relax and enjoy the beautiful views!!! We look forward to our next stay here, at Rock Bottom Horse Camp!!
