Camping there is so shady with Hugh trees and the lake is right there with great views. Not too far is the marina and boat rentals with a camping store. This is the vacation spot for a family or a few friends . I only wish it was like years ago and no reservation is required, just drive in and pay for a spot . This was the second time that I've visited Holly Bay campground. It's located in Daniel Boone National Forest and on Laurel Lake and just a few miles from Cumberland Falls. It's my favorite campground when I'm looking for seclusion. It seems like you're hours from the city, but it's just about an hour and a half from Lexington and 20 minutes or so from the interstate. The Grove is it's sister property, so if there isn't spots available here, there may be some at The Grove. Loops D & H are available via reservation, the other loops are walk up. This time we stayed in loop G area... G2 was our site and through the trees, you could see the lake. The paved pad was long and then there were steps that led to the huge graveled fire pit area. Perfect for tent camping. It wasn't considered a premium or double site, but compared to state resort park sites, it was at least twice as big. The shower house was decent. The water cold and the fact that the water on the shower was controlled by a button that you had to push every 30 seconds, was a bit annoying. I was thankful for hand soap and toilet paper though. The lady at check-in was a hot mess. She kept answering her cell phone and the landline phone instead of waiting on us. She didn't know which sites were lake side and wouldn't let us pay, look to choose a site, drop off and come back. She made us tow the camper down the narrow paths, choose a spot and then come back to pay with the camper in tow. Then it took her at least 10 minutes to write up the ticket, etc. After a 45 minute fiasco, we finally set up in the dark. Lesson learned... Remember what site # that you want, if you've not been there, study the map before you go. Things to consider are if you want to be by the lake, the shower house, or away from other sites. It's an American Land and Leisure run campground. I can't really figure out the ins and outs of the structurally run campgrounds... I've stayed at the Cor of Engineer, state park and KOA campgrounds. The American Land and Leisure campgrounds and sites seem to be the biggest and the most inexpensive. read more

The campground was beautiful and well kept, the trails were maintained, the staff was friendly and our experience was wonderful! Each campsite is big and secluded that you feel like you are on your own in the woods! We will definitely be back! Only thing uncomplimentary I can say is that over half the campground can not be reserved and there were several sites that we would have like to reserve. Also wifi is sketchy so if your looking to play on the internet on your phones they won't work so well read more

We arrived just after Memorial Day which was great because the campground was almost empty. The camp hosts were friendly and helpful. Reservations were is online easily & we parked our 32' trailer with 50amp hookup in loop D. There are no sewer hookup but they have a dump. The lake water is clear and the trails are fun. The marina has boat rentals available. This experience was just what we were hoping for. Note: the river was too high to kayak. read more

My husband grew up near Laurel Lake and still has family in the area. So, we camp at Holly Bay several times a year. The spots are large and the trees provide plenty of privacy. Because of the spacing, it's also a very quiet campground. You can hike down to the water, which is super convenient if you're meeting someone who has a boat and is already on the lake. Laurel Lake is amazing--my favorite in Kentucky (admittedly, it's the only lake in Kentucky where I have free access to a pontoon through my husband's parents). The campground is beautiful, the bathroom facilities are clean (the showers are a little annoying because the water shuts off automatically, but you can easily turn it back on, so it's not a big deal), there are great hiking trails (it's in Daniel Boone National Forest), lots of opportunities to see wildlife (especially birds!), and the lake can't be beat. Holly Bay Campground is situated in the Daniel Boone National Forest. This area is absolutely beautiful. After spending several summers camping in both Ohio and Northern Michigan we decided to try out southern Kentucky for a week. The National Forest Service outdid themselves with this campground! Many of the electric sites were heavily wooded to the point you could barely see the campsite next to you, which were not on top of you like many state and national park campgrounds. The camp hosts were very friendly, bringing us firewood, checking up on us etc. The campground offered hiking trails, flush toilets, drinking water, showers, boat ramps and more. Situated along the Laurel Lake, this campground is very busy with boaters. We were there during the week and there were plenty of campsites available but by weeks end, many boaters were pulling in so get there early in the week. The beach is located down the road from the campground just a couple miles. We were not impressed with the beach and by early afternoon finding a parking spot was nearly impossible. We could quickly tell the area was definitely a local "hang out and party spot" for young adults. The walk-in tent camping sites were nicely secluded and some even allowed possible canoe and kayak access right from your campsites. A great kayak/canoe livery is about 15 minutes from the campground and offers a variety of guided and self-guided river tours. We enjoyed our kayak trip down the Cumberland River where we ended just above Cumberland Falls-which was breathtaking! Overall, this was one of the most beautiful, cleanest and most well planned out campgrounds I've been to. If it wasn't for the high humidity and 90's early in the summer, we would've enjoyed it more! This area is frequented by bears and as we were leaving the area, not more than a couple miles from the campground while still in the National Forest a black bear meandered right in front of our car across the state route! read more
