Towner's Woods has some of the finest trails in the region, contained within a variety of environments. Near the park's entry, there is gorgeous Lake Pippin. Although water access isn't permitted because it is owned by the city of Akron (used for their water supply), some of the trails provide a scenic, somewhat hilly walk alongside it. The historic Hopewell burial mound (marked by an arrowhead on the map) is also near this entry portion of the park. The geography also includes flatter wetland terrain, a popular sledding hill, and a few ponds scattered throughout the woods. People use the park for trail running, dog walking (only on leash), and even cross country skiiing or snow shoeing in season. You could easily crank out 5-6 miles or more, if you were willing to retrace a few sections of the trail. All routes are well marked and maintained, and it would be hard to get lost in here for too long. Even on sunny weekends, I've been surprised at how sparsely populated the park is. Because of it's sprawling size, it's easy to have a very solitary experience. There are picnic pavilions and benches scattered around for warmer weather. Parking is plentiful just off the Ravenna Road entrance. There are also bathrooms in this area. If you're traveling on foot or by bike (bikes not permitted on the park's interior trails, though), you can get here via the Portage County Hike and Bike Trail. I hope you'll enjoy Towner's as much as I have. Whatever the season, it's an ideal place for a peaceful and active wander.

Google maps navigated me correctly to this location but with the large number of other cars, I should have taken the back entrance and saved some time. If the weather has been rainy your non 4 wheel/all wheel drive car will get stuck and you will need to park well outside the non paved roads. I was lucky and hitched a ride with a fellow driving a big ol Surburban which chewed up the muddy trail like a champ. As this is a slightly out of the way venue, there are not many nearby post fun options for food and drink, so plan accordingly.

This past weekend my boyfriend and I made the trip to the Brecksville Nature Center to feed…read morechickadees. It was honestly one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I grew up on a large piece of land and always loved watching the small creatures who lived near my house. I feed the animals who live in my backyard now, and I love watching various forms of wildlife frolic in my trees. I've always jokingly said that it would be cool to be able to feed birds from my hand (Cinderella style) but I never knew that would be actually possible. It's a pretty simple process. You go into the nature center, they give you sunflower seeds, and then you patiently and quietly wait with your hand outstretched and full of seeds. I was skeptical at first, but...the chickadees and other birds were quick to scope me out. They'd fly close enough to look at me, briefly make eye contact, and then swoop in for some food. They are so light! And beautiful! And amazingly brave, I think. I know I had a hand full of food, but...I'm a heck of a lot bigger than a chickadee. I had about a dozen birds land on me while I was outside. (and I wasn't out there very long - it was coooollllldd) The highlight was having a bird land on my head! This is a super fun (and free) wintertime thing to do. Chickadee feeding is held from late December through February (weather permitting). It's such a cool experience and totally worth the drive, no matter where you live. (and it's especially fun for the little ones! they can warm up inside by the fire afterwards)

This is not an ordinary park so if you are looking for a playground, picnic area or baseball diamond you will be disappointed. In fact, depending on how far you go, you might be anyways due to the unsightly factories and disturbing "Animal processing" plant that you are likely to see while gazing about. But aside from those minor things, the trail offers a smooth paved path that is perfect for those of you who struggle with balance, use a wheelchair or enjoy riding a bike. Yet be prepared to sweat!!! Even though there are trees to the right side of the trail, it is outlined with an old railway to your left. The sweltering sun might give you the bronzed skin you desire but it might also give you some super harsh sun burn - so make sure you bring plenty to drink & sun screen! There was only one bench to rest at the entire strip I walked (to the intersection of Lover's Lane). If you own a pet, be smart about taking them out! Dogs can feel the heat of the hot pavement through their paws so if it's hotter then 70/75 I WOULD NOT take them for a walk here!!!! There are no trash cans either so be prepared to carry your poop bags the entire time & take them home with you. Like most trails, this too is open form dawn til dusk & all dogs must be leashed! No ATV's or horseback riding.

On trails I've seen birds of all different colors, eagle, deer, rabbits, fox, snakes, toads, butterflies, and owls. All wildlife seen are amazing! The trails are gravel and well maintained. There are two ways to access the beach and you are able to walk the length of it, swim, sit ect. Two Rentable campsites and 1 rentable pavilion with heat, water and bathrooms. There is also a separate restroom near the lookout tower. Trails I break down to four. A more open air one that can get hot if walking in the summer. A wooded one that is sheltered by trees, keeping you cooler. The beach trail and a smaller grass trail where you are likely to see butterflies and deer.
