    Brooklyn Breakfast- £13
    Annie K.

We were seated downstairs, which is not ideal, but not awful either. There were 8 of us, and we all had different dishes. My main complaints were that, even though the restaurant does not yet have its liquor license, they also did not have tomato juice for a Virgin Bloody Mary. They also were out of the ingredients for the peach smoothie, but that might be because they have just opened and have not worked out the inventory yet. The eggs Royale were tasty, but the truffle fries were very skinny with some I melted cheese thrown on top. Also, my boyfriend had The Brooklyn, which is WAY overpriced. We may go back after the restaurant has been open a little longer.

    Taxi for one...great atmosphere.

Tanya (a friend and an elite!) had a voucher for this place and so I went along with her and we had some nachos and burgers. There seems to be this huge trend across the country for burgers and more american style dishes but this one just didn't make a mark for me. The nachos had big chunks of chicken that were not spread out well and not enough salsa or guac to share. The burger wasn't bad but if it wasn't for the voucher I do not think I would go back. The service was fantastic and the waitress was really friendly and helpful with her recommendations (It's a real shame at the time they did not have an alcohol licence so we couldn't wash down the burger...) but the overall theme and vibe seemed a bit done and did not feel fresh enough for me.

Been wanting to try out this place for a while. Amazing shake, best so far! Burger patty was a wee bit dry, but we did get the cheapest one. Great fries and onion rings. I would definitely go back on a Tuesday as its half price for students! Burger Review: Quality: 6/10 | Creativity: 7/10 | Value £: 10/10 Other wee things: Service: 8/10 | Ambience: 8/10

My favourite: sautéed greens (usually kale & broccoli but sometimes green beans and celery too) always done with onions & bacon

I have been here 5 times since they have opened! Partly, I'm American and have been missing large portions in restaurants (often enough to take home half!) and partly I've wanted an enormous milkshake or a build-your-own burger (there are about 40 different toppings to choose from), and partly I've just wanted to see what all the excitement was about. So here is my mixed bag review. Overall, good, with one negative (large group, being seated downstairs, and one timid waitress). So, brunch is a great meal: breakfast, lunch, what's not to love. They do a good job of giving you the enormous American pancakes and the huge brioche French toasts and gigantic omlettes (I couldn't finish mine and took half home). If you are seated upstairs, I think you'll be lucky because that's where the most attentive service is. As is evident from the queues to eat on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30am-2pm, this is one popular brunch spot and you may be out off by having to put your name down and wait anywhere from 10 minutes to 45 between those hours. I highly recommend getting up just a teeny bit earlier to beat that rush to get a table straight away at 11am. In the evenings, you can book a table which I think is absolutely necessary with a large group and optional with pairs. Now to some details. I LOVE their sautéed greens side. Completely Southern and very tasty. Another amazing side is the macaroni & cheese. People love their sweet potato fries, too. I enjoyed their side nachos and personally think you could make them a meal with the generous helping of ground beef. Also amazing are their crayfish tostadas. If you are very hungry, it's possible the crayfish tostadas won't fill you up, but they are amazing. Highly recommended. The omlette was a bit dry/slightly slightly overlooked. Nothing terrible, just what I noticed (it is eggs, afterall and the version I ordered had a lot of meat in it that also needed to be well-cooked). The full breakfasts are what you would expect only much larger portions than at a place like Bruno's or Loudon's or Montpelier's (which all do brunch but in more normal sized portions). The pancakes are a bit floury for my taste, but they are that kind of hearty American pancake breakfast and the maple syrup is real. (Thumbs up for that) They also have root beer....yummm. American expats, this is your spot for a rootbeer float (it was good, although I don't know why it looked pink). They do build your own burgers with almost any topping under the sun including things like pulled pork and fried eggs and various kinda of cheese and guacamole. The bean burger, which my friend had one of the times looked especially awesome for those vegetarians out there. I have yet to try the build-your-own-donut, but it's only a matter of time. The milkshakes look like your classic American diner milkshakes and are so filling you'll need a separate trip to enjoy one. For a memorable main, I had a tempura sea bass pasta dish where the pasta noodles were deliciously spicy and the fish was good. Another friend had the now classic waffles and chicken fingers which looked good. Someone else had the chicken Ceasar salad which was fairly decently large for a salad although I don't know if you'd want to eat that if you're hungry. I wish I had photos of all the dishes, but I'll upload the ones I do have. If you are a student, you are going to love their discounted Tuesday night dinners. The steaks on the menu aren't included in the discount, but almost everything else is and it is a whopping 50% off! Honestly, it is a fantastic deal. One of the Tuesday nights I are there (I've been twice), I paid a total of £7 for a side, a main, and a dessert. It is hard to cook for one person for less than that! So I recommend the Tuesday night deal. And for the one negative aspect. They are very very busy with the opening. They're still waiting on their liquor license to sell, their inventory can sometimes have off-days (no truffle oil), and their new staff are trying to keep up. I had a great experience with service on all but one occasion when one of the shy waitresses misinterpreted how I spoke to her and, I think, took offense and when I asked her to turn down the music, bring another menu, and to return after everyone had made their decisions to order. In fairness to her, I basically shouted at her to ask the music to be turned down and bring another menu. It was unintentional, but that's what happened. However, after that she didn't have the courage to come back to our table to take our orders and as we were a large group, it was going to take some time. So, it was disappointing to have our table avoided while she served other groups. Eventually the manager stepped in and looked after us, but this all did take some time and, all told, from the time we walked in the door until we finally placed our orders it was about an hour. Not a stellar moment. All in all, a good new spot with generous food portions. Just book ahead!

I thought I give Tribeca a try after having read all the not so charming reviews. Well yes, people seem not very pleased with the food nor service and still I rather make my own experience :-) I booked a table the night before for 5pm and had no problem queuing. I arrived just in time to be seated and whilst I waited for my friends I had ordered a strawberry and banana smoothie that was just right and refreshing after a good walk. As they have quite some choice on smoothies I asked a bit of advise from this charming blond glaswegian waitress. She was such a delight. For my main I ordered beef nachos with cheese and all the side sauces came with it, like salsa, guacamole and sour cream. Yum yum. My friend also ordered nachos but with chicken, which was a bit disappointing. Having said this, we mentioned that we did not like this food and the manager was very understanding and took our feedback with the offer to take the dish off the bill. I personally think this was a very nice gesture. May I just say that there was nothing wrong with the chicken nor the nachos. We just did not like the flavour not the texture it was served. Anyway, I came there specifically for the pancakes, but because the nachos starter portion was already so large I felt really full and was not able to order any more solid food. I went for a good old Americano instead and was not disappointed! Well, I still had a little nibble of my friends pancakes, which were served with whipped cream and berries and the additional amazing tasting vanilla ice cream. I really loved the ice-cream whilst the pancakes were a bit too thick for me and too floury. It is true that the service is still a bit on the slow side and that sometimes not all waitresses are very attentive and some questions come several times, but personally I thought it very nice that they asked twice than not at all, if we have everything and all was ok. The Tribeca staff was very attentive and friendly. Also, in the beginning they tell you that it's a BYOB and that they don't have an alcohol license yet. This is perfectly ok. If you need alcohol I am sure there is a grocers around the corner :-). But for the softies amongst us, I can say they do some amazing smoothies and shakes! I like the interior of this place. It's funky and bright. The American diner style is definitely presented. Toilets are downstairs and near the kitchen. We can only hope that the health standards are kept top notch! Other than that, for me, it was a nice experience and I will definitely be back to try the pancakes with maple syrup :-)

OK, we're all geeks here, right? Right. We've all seen Guardians of the Galaxy?…read more The scene in the prison where all hell breaks loose, and Rocket and Groot are fighting bad guys, and the bad guys are all like "PEW! PEW! PEW!" and Rocket doesn't have a gun, and then Drax arrives and is like "BAM! BAM! BAM!" and kicks people and throws Rocket a gun, and Rocket says "Oh.... yeah!" in an almost religious way? That "Oh... yeah!" was how I felt when I took my first bite out of a Jack's burrito for the first time in a long time this evening. I donated to the Jackstarter to help Illegal Jack's return from the dead, so I popped in today for the first time since the reopening to see how things had gone (and pick up my swag bag, priorities, people!) and I didn't plan to stay and eat due to lack of time... Then I saw a couple of burritos being built in front of me. And I smelled the pulled pork... and I caved, people. I folded quicker than a paper tent in a hurricane. I watched the staff look after the woman ordering two burritos to takeaway, wrapping the first one and leaving it where steam and heat would stop it going cold while the second was assembled. I love attention to detail like that. Also, using the lid of whatever filling you choose to catch any spillage so the fillings aren't cross contaminated. Little things make a difference, people. It came to be my turn. I opted for carnitas (that's what the pulled pork smell wafted out of) with a mild salsa, sour cream, pinto beans, seasoned rice and cheese. I watched in awe as the burrito was rolled. I really need to learn how to do this myself some day, I took my cup, filled it up with Coke and sat down. One bite later, I was back in Tex-Mex heaven. I'd missed Jack's, I really had. Other places may have more branches, but quantity isn't quality. Jack's is quality. The new premises are still a work in progress as Mr. Jack (nice bloke!) explained to me, but are still clean, bright, comfortable and welcoming, and even the music being played ticked all the boxes for me. Black Crowes, Lynyrd Skynyrd? Perfect Tex-Mex music. Honestly, I can't fault it. I will be back, I will eat too much every time I go, and I wil swear that I'll never do it again. But it's a lie. It's all a pretty little lie... Oh, and if you're in over the next week or so? Ask about the cranberry salsa - it's astonishing! Welcome back, Jack. You were missed..

BURRITOS! WHO DOESN'T LOVE EM??…read more Last night after a long and rainy day at work I coerced two coworkers of mine to join me for a bite out. My bus routes being what they are, I'd not only seen the remnants of the old Illegal Jack's on Lothian Road (though never got to try it), but now had spotted the new location along St. Patrick's Square nestled in the corner. Because we were looking for a budget meal that we could still sit down to, we decided to give Illegal Jack's a go. The first thing that became apparent to us is that Illegal Jack's has actually employed friendly staff. Wha... what? Where even am I? Walking in the door to being greeted with smiles and genuine friendliness is such a novelty when so many places give you the ambivalent "I'm being nice because I have to" luke-warm treatment at best, or downright snubbing at worst. And yet when we walked into Illegal Jack's the two gals at the counter of wonder were chatty and all smiles, and we had a short conversation about how good the music they were playing was. (Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack anyone?) Next comes prices. I got a small veggie haggis burrito (score!) that was somewhere around 6 pounds. Normally I'd be greedy and add chips or sides, but even this burrito being small, it's actually massive (I was impressed the gal at the till managed to perfectly roll it, and even smush it all around so the proportions were evenly mixed--MY HERO). So I topped it off with a nice wheat ale from Stewart's and left with my bill around 11 pounds. Not bad at all for a solid beer and a solid burrito. Next came seating. Illegal Jack's isn't quite up to restaurant standards of atmosphere for obvious reasons, but the seats feel a lot cozier and less standardized than your typical Pinto's or burger chain. We sat down next to a gentleman mysterious staff member who was doing some laptop work--he very nicely jumped to shift some of his things to the side for us so we could sit. Again, as I was remarking loudly that the music was lovely he thanked me for noticing as he must've been the man in charge of the playlist (come on, Grateful Dead was playing, my hippie heart rejoiced!). But enough about my music tastes. How was the burrito, you may ask? Delicious, of course! That was a really damn solid burrito. My coworker even did a happy dance (twice) whilst she ate it, which I think is a good sign for any burrito. Even more than that, when the gentleman staff sitting next to us noticed my bottle of Louisiana hot sauce on the table he disappeared into the back and plopped down a bottle of Scotch Bonnet + Mango hot sauce from his personal supply in the back for us to try. Damned if it wasn't delicious, but whoo it had some great heat! Overall I left this place feeling 1) chuffed as all get out 2) with super duper happy tummies 3) pleased at how NICE everyone was and 4) STOKED that I have found an amazing burrito place that I can easily get to (lamenting the fact that Los Cardos is all the way on the other end of town in Leith!). So if you're fancyin' a fairly-priced burrito in a joint that feels just a little bit closer to home, give Illegal Jack's a scope. I know for certain I'll be back!

Both were great - well cooked and with just the right amount of juiciness. The service we received was attentive without being overbearing - no mean feat as the restaurant was deserted when we first arrived. Came in on a Friday night super excited for a burger- my partner and I had been waiting for this all week! At 7pm the place was already full, but we were told if we could wait a few minutes a table would be available. So after some back and forth debtate, we decided to wait it out. This establishment is small, I don't think it could seat more than 20 people. There are about 6 tables, all in close proximity. Service was decent and we both just opted for the classic burger and fries combination. The food came out not long after and it really wasn't anything to be amazed by, I could have made this burger at home. Fried were good but you know, fries are always good. Nothing proprietary here. What I absolutely hated was the communal sauces concept- the whole idea just seems unhygienic and gross to me. There were a variety of sauces given to each table on a large platter, shared from table to table to have with your meal. One of the tubs was a tiny scraping of mayonnaise the other table had but we were given the rest of to finish- ugh, gross. Overall quite underwhelming and did not hit the spot. I'm sure there are better burger joints around where you don't have to share the sauce. I wouldn't return and I'm really disappointed- I was hoping to add this one to the list of local faves.

Ok, 2.5 stars. I don't want to be too harsh now…read more I was so excited to come here and review the this place. It was a toss-up between Bell's diner and feed, both being equidistant to my home. So off I went to feed wanting to suss out this new local business and what it had to offer. And it was meh. Feed is actually located inside St Vincent's pub. There's a little section in the back for the 'feeders' which I assume is an affectionate term but I just didn't like. You will then need to brave the masses to corner yourself off in an area out the back that's oh so lonely whilst the masses look onto their football game and scream and cheer nonstop. So really one star for ambiance, it downright sucks if your looking for a semi quiet meal without sports crazed fans hollering every other minute at a screen you can't see. Then begins the mission to return to the bar, again braving (and interrupting) the masses to order food. Now with 2 burgers, 2 fries, two drinks (beef and cider) and 6 wings the total came to £47.80- WAY too overpriced in my opinion, and at this point I started listing the higher end restaurants I could have gone to for the same/less cost in my head. So then back to my seat. There is nowhere to look except the wall, it's really quite isolating. Then the food rolled on our after about 10 minites and I realised- I've eaten this food before! And the waves of memories set in, where I had actually had feed delivered to my home just after it first opened, and then I remembered the food being so uninteresting that I actually forgot about it. Hoping for an improvement, I dug in. Wings: with 6 for £10 I'd expect them gold plated, but they were your run of the mill cooked wings slathered in Buffalo sauce. The blue cheese and and celery were good though, I remember when they delivered they put the celery in with the chicken so I had limp and warm veggies the last time. Some improvement, not much. Fries: just fries. From the frozen section. Maybe I was hoping they'd be hand cut or something? Anyway they were good but you could get fries like that anywhere. Burgers: overdone and dry, just like last time. The bread is too chewy and needs to be heated in my view. The house made pickles are a nice addition but it was in with my blue cheese and chilli jam burger- made no sense and was not a good addition. I love to support a good new business but I'm really struggling to find the good points here. The food was good, but there are better burger joints in Edinburgh. This place is a pub and a poor attempt at encouraging people to use this place as a restaurant. The level of noise and crowding does not make for a good meal. It was also not even memorable to me from the last time, and I rarely forget a meal. Overall this place is overpriced and not at all amazing. I'd don't feel the need to go back, and consider this fair warning if you decide to brave the masses too.
