I understand that so much of a worship experience is subjective so I hope to be more factual than opinionated. New Life Church at Town Center is one of four campuses of New Life Church in Hampton Roads. New Life as a whole is a multi-ethnic, interdenominational church. The Town Center campus is small in comparison to the other campuses and meets at 9 AM and 11 AM on Sunday mornings. There are greeters at the doors to the church and the doors to the sanctuary. An information desk is situated to the left when you walk in from the front for anyone that has questions or needs direction. Coffee is usually served freely between the two services around 10:30. The church service typically runs for about an hour and a half. It starts with worship that is a combination of hymns, modern worship, and original songs from New Life. You can expect a charismatic time of worship that includes clapping, singing, and reading Scripture corporately. If you happen to attend on a communion Sunday then you can partake because New Life has an "open table" philosophy which means anyone that understands the significance of communion can receive it. After worship, there are announcements that pertain to the whole of New Life and the individual location, the collection of the offering, and a time to greet each other. At this time a large screen will appear in front of the sanctuary so that the sermon can be streamed from the main campus by the head pastor. After the sermon one of the campus pastors will give the benediction and release the congregation. If someone needs prayer then they have a team at the front ready to pray with you. That's the basics of what you can expect if you spend a Sunday morning at New Life Church - Town Center.

But God had led me to this church so I went. Immediately, my family was blessed by excellent Biblical teaching from Sunday School/Sunday Service and examples of authentic Christianity where people really love and take care of others. There are many volunteers who serve: in Sunday School teaching where I learn something new every week (even after 34 years of church!), in the Nursery to help share the responsibility, at a truly amazing youth center, talented musicians on the worship team, and in outreach, like the Beach Bucket, Homeland Disciples, and PIN ministry on-site. There is so much being done from this place, it is truly amazing. Even if we have to move, we will come back to Beach regularly, as it has become a home to us and part of our family. We need you too! Come to Sunday School at 10 am Sundays and service at 11 and hear what God is saying to His church. Share a hug, pray with a stranger and make a new friend! God is moving and His blessings abound!

While we sat in the sanctuary, Glenda was eager to stop, say hello, and chat. These small, benign gestures make all the difference. Even after service, Glenda found us again to introduce us to her husband. My husband, daughter and I felt the sincerity from her. Did I forget to mention the coffee and tea bar? Steaming coffee was available with an array of creamers was on hand and date I say it? It was HEAVENLY (pun intended) Haha! Well done, Grace Church! Well done!

Great kids programs from nursery age all the way through highschool. They present God to them on their level. For the adults the service is always on point! Music is awesome. The messages always get me too. Driving on campus for the first time I was in awe of the attention to detail that these folks are obviously serious about what they do, who they are and whom they represent. I was previously a member of a Christian organization for 35 years and with the prospect of relocating, we'll I was extremely apprehensive to say the least. But as the weeks went by, and we were so warmly received I couldn't believe we hit a grand slam the first time up to the plate. The Pastor and family are very gracious and humble, leading the congregation not prodding them, and that they have a school of over 200 students communicating to me they understood the importance teaching the children biblical principles, and with that came what was new to me, multi-generational depth of Christian experience and testimony. We were full members within 4 months and volunteer in different capacities throughout the week. The thing that clearly she doesn't get is that the Catholic Church of today unlike maybe say a hundred years ago does not have the same place or meaning in people's lives as it once did. Back then it was assumed that if you're family was Catholic you would be an automatic cradle to the grave member as well. Like it or not, that no longer is even remotely true. There are many reasons for that and while members/parishioners share a lot of blame in that so does The Church itself. Between various scandals involving their personnel, mismanaged finances with bishops/cardinals living in multi-million dollar posh Cribs-worthy spreads all the way down to services/priests who are cranky-poor orators-do zero to engage their congregation to simple things like music that is boring/awful/less than enthusiastic. Like it or not but the Catholic Church is like a cabinet or a type of pasta or a charity where it is no more than a product or a commodity and if people don't feel that they're getting bang for their buck or any ROI or that they have no say into what's going on, they'll walk. What that leads to is what is going on country wide right now with massive school & church closures/consolidations which I know all too well as I've been personally through one school closure and in my area there have been nearly a dozen church closures over the last decade. The thing that I liked about Church of the Holy Family is while it most certainly is very different they attempt to engage the community/congregation which is what is going to keep this place open for years to come versus some outdated approach of "Here's how it is or else" which clearly no longer works. The idea of this place having less Catholicism than an Episcopal service is just stupid hyperbole. Look, the Latin Mass isn't coming back in any wide spread usage other than the occasional once a week gimmick at best at maybe one parish in a diocese just like the changes that happened in Vatican II also are not going away either. So, you can either embrace the future of what is clearly the writing on the wall for parishes that want to thrive/survive or you can hang onto a old, dead and dying way of worship that will have you church hopping the rest of your life as churches who do not adapt will continue to close.
