Perhaps one of the best leisure centres in te country!…read more The Waterfront in Greenock is a huge complex comprising of...wait for it...a 25m training pool, a wave pool, jacuzzi, the longest tyre flume in the UK, and outdoor swimming pool and a lazy river...an ice rink, a fitness gym, workout classes, spray tanning and much much more! If you're a fitness buff then you will love the gym, not so many people standing about adoring themselves as people actually training, so better than most. The changing facilities are some of the best I've ever experienced and all showers are individual for a welcome change...and they are power showers! Amazing. Gym can be quite expensive at around a 5er a pop but totally worth it!

They have "Ice Cold Fridays" on the rink which is skating but with a selection of dance anthems. On a Saturday nights it's "Sub Zero Saturdays" where they play the latest cheesy pop tunes. The toddler's swimming pool is the best I've seen with a tiny little double sided slide in it and lots of other watery attractions to keep little ones amused. For big kids like myself there is the body flume which goes outdoors and believe me you will know when you're going through the outdoors bit because your nipples will tell you! If that's not hardcore enough for you then you can always swim through to the outdoor pool which is heated but you won't be able to tell because it is still bloody freezing! We're Scottish though, we're hard and we can handle it! The gym has loads of great equipment which you would usually have to go to a private gym to find such as power plates, a climbing machine (which you can set to famous landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower which gives you a work out equivalent to climbing your chosen landmark!) and a ab solo machine which is a lot like those basketball games you get in arcades. If you're hungry after all that skating, swimming and working out then you can go and buy a delicious greasy sausage roll from the Waterfronts very own branch of Aulds! Random, but loving it

After this wild workout everyone got a little paper bag full of tuck shops sweets, it was great! After the ice-skating my dad usually took us to the swimming pool, the river rapids were my favourite part and I could swim here for hours. I particularly remember the scary red dragon statue and the cave men who looked down on your when you were swimming round the pool, one of them was wielding a spear which I have to admit, was a little bit scary. They also have a huge play area with ball pools, slides, climbing walls - it just looks amazing. Unfortunately, my parents never let me go here and I feel that I've missed out. At the moment the play area pool is closed for major refurbishment, who knows what it will look like when it's finished? I think I might take a trip back soon for good old times sakes. A fantastic day out for all the family!

However, the magnificent building, situated near the University, is misleadingly-titled given that it is actually a fully-functioning leisure centre, with a gym, badminton courts, 5-a-side football pitches, Turkish suite, aerobics studio and a range of classes (some of which are also available to non-members). The pool remains the facility's main selling point and is situated in a truly grand hall lined with lovingly-restored balconies. Measuring 30ft, it is frequented by swimmers of all levels, as well as plenty of kids who love diving from the boards or swinging on the travelling rings and trapeze ropes. With the bar having recently had a lick of paint as well, the Western is an all-encompassing venue which many of the members consider to be a second home. For me, it'd probably turn into 600 quid a year for two games of 5s, but for the more dedicated among you, definitely worth checking out.

I've not been in any of the rest of the building so can only comment on the pool - I really like coaching here, the hall is beautiful, although it can get very warm standing at the side! Like other older baths, the Western baths has a trapeze and rings which I have never seen anyone use but you can watch on youtube if you want to see it done! Note the pool is 30 yards so a length will take you a bit longer than expected. To other coach type people, climbing the stairs up to the trapeze platform gives you an excellent alternative angle from which to watch people swim - best tip from last week!

How was this the first time I went to the Gourock pool?!?!?…read more It's a salt water pool on the Clyde estuary with stunning views. The pool is heated to 84 degrees so even if the air is cold the pool is not. There is also a smaller "baby" pool for little children but we spent pretty much the entire time in the bigger pool. There are two diving boards (high and low) but note they are only open for stipulated times during the day. Some loungers dot around the pool side and there is a lower terrace with umbrella-ed tables where you could have a snack or lunch. There are large changing facilities with cubicles, lockers (£1 but you get it back) and roasty, toasty showers for when you get out of the nice warm pool! It was only £3.40 for myself and my 3 1/2 year old son so the value is crazy good. It's roughly an hour's drive from Glasgow and there is a large parking lot as well as street parking. We went on a warm day so the parking lot was quite crowded as was the pool but even still there was plenty of room to swim. I've not been but they also do several midnight swims over the summer where you can swim under the stars!

An adult swim is £3.80 at time of writing. Parking can be tricky, but you can park on the road further down the road.

A place where you can feel pampered and in a place with an atmosphere of solitude and tranquillity with the use of Serene Victorian Turkish Suite, Steam room and saunas and Victorian slipper baths and hot tubs (which are gender segregated see link for more details*) Its got a bar in which they host occasional small concerts and since its run by its members, anyone can propose something special for the space. It has awesome rings and trapeze over the pool that is as entertaining for adults as it is for kids. They have a slightly cooler pool that is filtered with charcoal filters and UV so that they don't need to use harsh chemicals, so an all round nicer experience than your regular pool and possibly better for those with sensitive skin. The gym up stairs (formally the Billiards/Snooker Hall) hold a good range of equipment and should fit your needs should you want to burn some calories or work on those glutes! Ill end in saying that a little more expensive it may be than your regular pool but it is SO worth it, so check out the memberships options, get a free pass or come in on doors open day, you wont regret it. Also there is a lovely naturist swimming session on a Sunday after 6 if you want to have a nice skinny dip in the pool to unwind and rejuvenate. enjoy.x http://www.arlingtonbaths.co.uk/facilities/swimming-turkish-and-gym-timetable

They invested millions in this project and it shows…read more Whilst not quite up to the standard of a private leisure complex, it is far better than any other council facility i've visited. There are 3 pools - including a competition sized pool, a pool where the floor lowers for different classes and a kiddie fun pool. There are also flumes and I think some fancy wave machines. I haven't used the pool so can't give you much more than that, but it looks good and has a great viewing area. The complex also has a gym, dance studio, conference rooms, games halls, cafe, bar and steam room/sauna/jacuzzi area. The gym is fantastic and extremely well equipped. There are all the usual cardio machines and plenty of each to limit having to wait. There are also a huge amount of weight machines which look top spec to me. There is a free weights area too. The gym is clean, well laid out and impressive. There are flat screen tvs dotted about but each cardio machine also has it's on screen where you can watch tv, listen to radio or pull up different stats. Plus, there is a system in place where you can log in to the machines and they will record your workout. There is also little touchscreens on the wall where you can log in and book classes or send messages to a trainer. I think this is awesome for a council gym - especially when you consider the all singing all dancing membership is only £35 a month! DG One also runs a number of classes, of which I have been to Step and Aerobics. The studios are in great condition and are well equipped with an excellent air conditioning system to keep you cool. The instructors are a mixed bunch - i've had good and bad. But, I think this is typical of the council (sorry to say). I have not used the games halls but they look great. These rooms also have retractable seating and are used for concerts and events. Again, I have not visited these but have heard good reports. I have used the meeting rooms at DG One and they are really professional. They have smart boards, good quality seating and can offer catering of tea, coffee biscuits etc. This makes for a good facility but again, the staff can let it down. The guys that set up the rooms and those that book them are great. However, I was disappointed with the catering which was late and disrupted the meeting. The sauna/steam room/Jacuzzi area is also impressive for a council building. Bizarrely this is situated on a different floor to the pool so you can't go from one to the other. This suits me as I don't swim but must be really annoying for those that want to use both. I have been told this is to stop kids getting in and I can see the point. However, it must be so frustrating to go for a swim and have to get dressed to go upstairs only to get undressed again for a sauna etc! I haven't visited the cafe or bar. I have heard good reports on the cafe but have never seen anyone in the bar. Overall, DG One is a fantastic looking complex with great facilities and all reasonably priced. So why a low rating, well. DG One was severely delayed in opening and when it did there were mega problems. So many parts of the complex have been broken, closed, had accidents reported that it has become a bit embarrassing. Only recently, a sign fell on a child's head! Now, I understand any new building will have teething problems but these have been badly dealt with, terribly communicated and often avoidable. As a member, I have never been told of the problems and received no apology. Only when I arrive do I see out of order signs. In addition, the levels of cleanliness at times can be atrocious. I have stopped using the sauna/steam room area after visiting 4 nights in a row and seeing the same mucky marks on the floor. It clearly wasn't even getting a basic clean down! The staff are also a mixed bunch. While those in the gym have always been great to me. Some of the receptionists have no customer service skills and by what i've seen, the cleaners can't be very good. This is typical of a council facility and it is really frustrating. DG One could be fantastic if the staff and the organisation just took a bit of pride in the building and showed it some respect. Unfortunately, I don't think this will happen and I hate to be cynical but I bet it will be in tatters in no time through sheer neglect.
