I love this clinic. Dr Julie and all her staff are wonderful. They love the fur babies. I had to say goodbye to one of mine in June and then again in September. I was so devastated . They were all so sympathetic it was wonderful. They sat on the floor with me while saying goodbye. I was so thankful. My sheltie Bella wants to help Julia in the front. Troy Veterinarian Clinic has a mission of 'providing quality compassionate veterinary services to Troy IL and the surrounding metro east area.' Sadly, they don't live their mission. We have had a relationship with this veterinarian and clinic for 10 years, and up until the most recent event I have always had high regards for this veterinarian and clinic. The professionalism and compassion displayed by Dr. Mears and her office staff is despicable. They have been caring for my now elderly dog for 7 years. I called to request pain medicine be refilled for his comfort and quality of life. This has been done monthly since approximately December, however, this time they demanded we bring him in to have lab work done. When I challenged this request, I was met with incredible rudeness by the staff, and the veterinarian refused to speak with me. I immediately felt this provider and her team no longer cared for my pet and felt I may need to explore other opportunities. I arrived at the clinic to request my pet's medical records, and was met with continued rudeness of the staff, and a letter that had already been printed and signed by the DVM separating our relationship citing I had distrust and displeasure in their services, after 10 years! I was merely advocating for what I felt was best for my dog. While in the office the situation further escalated with her staff, still not having the opportunity to speak with the veterinarian herself. I had 3 of her staff members yelling at me in the lobby of her clinic with the following comments highlighted: - One staff member stated that since 2016 they have documentation of my concerning interactions with this clinic. In the 8 years since 2016 not one person, including the veterinarian, had a conversation regarding these concerns. - One staff member accused me of not caring about my dog, and not taking appropriate care of him. He has had yearly visits, sometimes more often to this clinic. - Another threatened to let other clinics know of my behavior, in an attempt to prevent care of this pet they have had the privilege of caring for for the last 7 years. - Another set my pet's medical records in the parking lot of the clinic in an attempt to get me to leave when I was still requesting my other dogs records These are some highlights of the horrible treatment I received from the office staff. There is an incredible lack of compassion and unprofessionalism from both Dr. Mears and her staff. The veterinarian took the cowardly way out by not having a conversation with a longstanding client, rather writing a letter when I challenged her requests and advocated for my elderly dog. Putting a frail, elderly dog through a stressful car ride for labs that would not change our treatment goals and are not necessary for prescribing pain medicine shows the lack of compassion. Furthermore, the unwillingness to directly discuss the situation with me shows there is a lack of caring. For many pet owners, pets are family. When family is in distress emotions tend to run high. It is important to be able to differentiate these situations when dealing with clients. Troy Vet Clinic is unable to make this differentiation. If you want to advocate for your pet, this is probably not the best place. My dog passed away 28 days after this incident, without the help of our trusted veterinarian because I was trying to do what was best for my pet and that was not accepted. If you want to do everything the clinic says without batting an eye, maybe you and your pet will be treated with respect. read more

Our long time vet office in Troy had closed for some building updates and we decided to give Troy Vet Clinic a try in fall 2019. Receptionist (Ariel) is super friendly and compassionate (5 out 5 stars). We have 4 cats. Two are seniors and we saw Dr Julie for them and the feline specialist for the younger two. No reason, it just worked out that way. The vets and techs do a big time upsell for preventative testing and treatments. Flea and worm preventative even is your cats are indoor only. So you have to know what is necessary and kind of push to not have things that aren't necessary. For full disclosure we opted to do senior cat blood work and urinalysis as one of our senior kitties was inexplicably losing weight. Nothing troubling showed up on the blood work but we still were concerned about kitty's weight loss. Recheck in 3 months. We did the recheck since her weight was still dropping. There is a predictive blood test that Dr Julie thought might give an indication towards our kitty's weight loss. It came back predicting kidney disease within two years. Still no answer on the weight loss just recommendations to recheck in 3 months and kidney diet food. My husband and I both felt that our concern was not being addressed. The idea of cancer wasn't high on the list of possibilities according to the vet as she was eating. Summing up, we lost confidence in Dr Julie and the next time a recheck was offered we declined. All Dr Julie talked about were her kidneys. She talked like our kitty had CKD. Confused me. I took my kitty to Hawthornes for a second opinion. My cat was 7 pounds as this point. She had been chunky when we started with Troy. Hawthorne blood test came back as normal. Urinalysis normal. They did an MRI. Inflamed small intestines. Either cancer or IBD. Unfortunately it's small cell lymphoma. In summary, Troy Vet has upscale tools and testing but Dr. Julie definitely gets an idea in her mind and doesn't look for something else. We moved all of our cats. read more

my 5 year old dog passed away on Friday of an abscess liver. I took her to the vet in Troy 2 weeks ago with a large mass on her right side. No attempt was made to find out what was going on inside of her. They just loaded me up with $500 worth of pills, to fight the symptoms they said. A week later with no improvement, they tried to load me up with $750 worth of pills, still no diagnosis. I finally took her to Edwardsville on Friday and within 5 min I was told about her liver. It seems that Troy is there to make money and not care for animals. very sad read more

What an amazing team! I am more than impressed. I called them for my dog who was in terrible pain, my regular vet could not get her in even though it was an emergency. I called they said bring her in right now! While the treatment did not work and her injury was too severe the amount of compassion they showed in knowing how hard the decision to put her down was over the top. On May 9, 2022, Troy Veterinary Clinic discovered a lump on Samson's leg during a dental procedure and removed the lump while he was still under anesthesia. The histopath diagnosis was cutaneous hemangiosarcoma - an aggressive and lethal form of skin cancer. After consulting with an oncologist at VSS, we were given hopeful news that Troy Vet Clinic may have caught the cancer early enough to be curative. Today, June 29, 2022, Samson underwent a series of imaging to establish if and how far his cancer has spread internally. Remarkably, Samson is CANCER-FREE. He will still need routine screenings every 3-6 months, but for now we can rest a little easier knowing that he won't be leaving us any time soon! Extraordinary circumstances brought Samson to Troy Vet Clinic and for that Jessica and I are extremely thankful. I would also like to thank Julea Marino for finding the lump and saving Samson's life. My husband and I moved from STL to Illinois a few years ago. We've been looking for a vet that's closer, but have been unimpressed by many of the local places. On March 30, 2023 our dog had been experiencing diarrhea for about 6 consecutive days and we finally said enough is enough. He had already had gastroenteritis a month ago and it seemed like it hadn't completely cleared up. I called around to a few vets, but they couldn't get us in until the following week. When I called Troy Veterinary Clinic, the person on the phone was so warm and got us in immediately. I was unable to take the dog, but my husband said that everyone he came in contact with at the office was warm, capable, smart, caring and he told me I think we found our new vet! Dr. Mears and the staff at bothTroy and Shiloh clinics are AMAZING...we have been going to Dr. Dave for about 9 years. We have two boxers and the staff know and greet them every time. We just recently had to have emergency surgery on one of our girls and they were so kind and patient with me and my husband and our thousands of questions and concerns. They checked in on our girl just as much as we did as she had to spend her recovery time at the emergency clinic in Collinsville. I don't know how we would have gotten through this without their support. Not just because of this one instant but for all the years we have gone to him at both clinics I suggest his clinics to anyone...I don't take my girls just to anyone...these are our kids and we fully trust Dr. Mears... read more

I live in Troy and my vet is in Belleville. When Troy Veterinary Clinic opened I thought, maybe I should try out a new vet, not that I was unhappy with my current one but because of the drive with two large dogs. BIG MISTAKE. I brought both dogs in for shots and while we were there I told the vet that my one dog was not eating as well lately and he was drinking a lot. She wanted to take blood and see what was wrong. When she told us she wanted to do the blood she went on and on about the charge for the blood test about how they try to be very affordable, blah, blah, blah. This is my baby. I don't care what the cost is if he is sick. Of course she felt all over him and did the physical exam. She came back in and said "his white cell count is high, he must have an infection". At this she gave us two medications to take. Then she said, we can run more tests but lets see if this fixes everything. We took Patton home and he seemed to get worse. I called them back and their answer was, lets put him on more medication. At this point I called my normal vet. They were able to get Patton in the next morning. When Dr. Tim (HOOF AND PAW) did a physical exam (felt on his belly) he looked at me and asked when I had Patton at the other vet. I told him 6 days prior. Tim looked at me and said, I'm sorry but I think he has liver cancer. This floored me. Tim had me feel his underside and told me what I was feeling was his liver and that would have been sticking out the same way a week ago. To be on the safe side, we did an ultrasound and sure enough, it was liver cancer. Tim told us Patton might have 4 weeks left, he was in pretty bad shape even though he didn't really have any outward signs of being sick. Tim told me to immediately discontinue the antibiotics because they make the liver work harder. With the office visit and ultrasound....Tim charged me $25.00. He is a wonderful man who has a heart of gold. You can tell he really cares about animals, not money. I stopped feeding Patton commercial dog food and started home cooking all of his meals. Food can play a big factor in cancer in dogs. Patton hung on for almost 5 months. He passed peacefully in his sleep on January 4th 2013. I miss him every single day. I have two dogs now that will never again see the inside of Troy Vet Clinic. I cannot urge you enough to NOT go there. Oh and when I called the office to tell them what happened, it was like they just didn't care. There really wasn't anything said, just "ok, we will remove you as a patient"......WOW read more

While I had previously been happy with Troy Veterinary Clinic, I am considering finding a new vet. First of all, this vet's office is not familiar with the special needs of giant breed dogs. The "normal" rules don't apply to them, such as diet, when to spay/neuter, etc. They have demonstrated an unfamiliarity with this and have generally applied generic care to my Great Dane. Secondly, this office doesn't seem to be overly organized. I have repeatedly gotten notices to update my dog's rabies vaccination 2 months after he was vaccinated in their office. When I call, I'm told to just disregard the notice. read more

Our beloved 12 year old lab has appeared to be aging rapidly over this past year. His energy level has been greatly decreased, sleeping a lot and socialized very little, which isn't normal for him at all. We were beginning to wonder if this was the beginning of the end for him. Over the summer he developed a terrible skin condition. He was itching a lot, had some hot spots, and was loosing hair in patches. We tried lots of different home remedies... changed his flea/tick medicine, gave him baths with numerous different products, used hot spot medicine... and none of this really seemed to help. We finally realized that we needed expert help. We decided to try out Troy Veterinary Clinic since it's location was so convenient for us, and they had Saturday hours. I was so impressed with the staff, from the receptionist who scheduled our appointment, to the veterinary technician, to the doctor. They were amazing! They ran tests and knew exactly what the problems were and how to treat him!! Well, after just a few days of being on his new medicines, he began acting like a puppy again! Now his itching is almost gone, his hair is all growing back, and he is hanging with the family again!! I think I actually caught a glimpse of a smile on his face! We can't thank them enough! I am a client of Hawthorne Troy, but Troy Veterinary Clinic opened up and they seemed pretty good about not charging an office visit, or a tiny office visit fee, for little things like heartworm tests and vaccinations. I took my dog there to do a heartworm test once. However, when our sweet boy Zeke was at the end of his time we called both vets to see who would be more reasonably priced for the 'procedure'. Hawthorne was a little pricier, but Troy Vet Clinic wanted us to pay an office visit fee for them to see him before they would agree to the 'procedure'. We opted for Hawthorne, and we were glad. They were so kind and respectful during that very difficult time. Now, we're watching my sister's dog for an extended time and we want to get his shots and heartworm test. So, Troy Clinic was going to be more reasonable than Hawthorne (minimal office visit fee when doing vaccinations). So, even though we had been put off by their attitude with our Zeke situation, off we went to Troy Vet Clinic. They had never seen this dog. They have only seen my other dog for a heartworm test, so we don't really have a feel for the staff there, and I've never even met the vet. Although, when I stopped in a while back to get some heartworm medicine, I spoke with the girl at the front desk and was told that my brand of choice had been discontinued but that they had Heartgard. I asked her if the active ingredients in the Heartgard are the same as the ones in my old brand, as I knew my dog's system did well on the old brand. I could see by the flash of inner confusion on the girl's face that she had no idea what the active ingredients were. However, she must have decided that it was easier to come up with an answer than to try to figure it out, so she piped up "Yes!". When I asked her what that active ingredient was, she got that confused look again. So, I gave her my best "You just LIED and we both know it" look. I checked, no they aren't the same. I guess it's a good thing that I was asking because I'm overprotective and not because my dog is freakishly allergic, because that invented answer could have been a big problem. So, needless to say, the staff at Troy Vet Clinic haven't earned our trust yet. The vet tech who saw us for our vaccinations was extremely young and unsure. She announced that she would take my dog to the back to do all the vaccinations and the heartworm test, and I very politely stated that I wished to remain with him while they did what they needed to do. That startled her. She said all her equipment was in the back room, so I offered to follow her to the back room, or suggested that she could bring her 'equipment' to the exam room. She went mildly fluttery and stuttery and had to go out and check with someone else. She returned to tell me that I could not remain with my pet because it was against policy. She cited insurance issues as the reason. I was adamant about not turning my pet over to people who were increasingly causing me alarm, and my husband was very upset. He explained to her that the dog is part of our family and that the staff had done nothing to earn our trust yet. Some discussion later, we ended up leaving vowing never to return. The staff just doesn't exhibit the regard for our family members that we feel they should. So, skip forward a few days. I receive a certified letter from the vet at Troy vet clinic saying that yada yada obviously we are unhappy with their service and don't trust them yada yada yada and we should find a new vet. No kidding? That's just what I was thinking. I absolutely DON'T trust them with my beloved animals, and I absolutely WILL find a different vet. There was absolutely no chance that I was ever going back there, but they felt it necessary to spend $6.11 to send a certified letter divorcing themselves from a potential client, essentially trying to punish me for being a voice and advocate for the members of my family who have no voice. I find their behavior extremely disturbing, very arrogant, and not at all in the best interest of pets and the people who love them. I will heartily recommend AGAINST Troy Veterinary Clinic and Dr. Julie Mears to anyone who asks. I miss my old vet who didn't charge outrageous office visit fees when they weren't needed, who greeted my dog with a big smile and open arms, and who I trusted to treat her with love and respect at all times, whether I was there watching over his shoulder or not. I miss my old vet whose goal was healthy happy animals not paying off his student loans or shuffling as many dogs as possible through his office every day. I miss my old vet who spoke to me about my dog's care, not in little placating words, but about research and biology and physiology. If anyone knows a vet like that in the area, please let me know. In the meantime, if you're in Troy, I recommend you visit Hawthorne Animal Hospital (and I recommend them over Troy Vet Clinic without ever having met the new vet at Troy Hawthorne!). read more

I have been taking my pets to Troy Veterinary Clinic for about a year now. All of the doctors are compassionate, caring and very knowledgeable. My babies have gotten their yearly preventative care and at least one has had a dental done that included having to have some teeth pulled. He originally went in with an abcess and between the procedure and medications he is doing awesome!!! He is an older guy too so I was worried about him being put out for it. Their reassurance went a long way toward making me feel comfortable about it. Many of my pets are older and have special needs and they have been able to give me good medical advice in order for me to make some recent tough decisions in regards to a couple of them. I will continue to trust their judgement and look forward to taking my younger pets to them in the future. read more
