I've read a lot of these reviews and some were poor. I do not understand that because I had the best 1st experience. The front desk staff, the techs, and Dr. Trickel were all amazing and compassionate and treated my bunnies with the utmost care. One of my quad needed a molar trim. If I absolutely had to say one negative thing is that the wait time was a little long But that said it is a hospital and they take emergency patients so I can say if I have an emergency I would want them to take my baby right away. If you don't want to take a chance that you may have a wait time due to an emergency that may come in then you may want to seek more of a clinic type vets office. When you are watching a sick animal suffer, every hour counts, yet our pleas for updates went ignored. ​ When I requested immediate answers and attempted to hold them accountable for these dangerous administrative failures, the staff chose to deflect blame rather than fix their mistake. They accused me of being "verbally abusive" simply because I was being firm, urgent, and demanding transparency regarding my dying dog's medication. ​Advocating fiercely for a terminally ill pet who cannot speak for themselves is not abuse--it is a response to severe negligence. Medical delays and massive counting errors (when they finally filled one of the medications, they shorted us an entire 25 days' worth of pills) are entirely unacceptable when dealing with end-of-life care. We took our doxie here to have her put to sleep after she took a quick turn with aggressive cancer. It was the only place nearby that was available. I have had to have pets put to sleep before and, even at the emergency vet, they've had a comforting room that doesn't feel sterile, with soft lighting, and seating. I guess I shouldn't have set my expectations that high. We were led to a dirty exam room with only a hard bench to sit on, had dog hair everywhere and smelled very very heavily of urine. I understand it is a vet's office, but I've never gone into an exam room that felt dirty before. After speaking with someone else who has gone here, they also reported that smell. The vet tech had a very strange demeanor and I understand having to protect your emotions in a job where you have to do this frequently but it was very uncomfortable. They took a very long time to return after they had sedated our pup and it made the whole experience feel that much worse. They had a very hard time putting in the IV, which is not their fault, as she had become very dehydrated within the last day. But watching them bend her leg in strange positions when she was unwell was very very upsetting. Finally, I called after 3 weeks of not receiving any phone call about her cremains being ready. They said it took about 2 weeks and I was trying to be patient. They told me that they had called me an entire week prior and had left a voicemail. I checked my missed calls and my voicemails and did not have either so I do not believe they actually called me. They may be amazing vets, I cannot speak on that. But overall, I was very sad that my pup's end of life experience was in a dingy exam room that smelled so heavily of urine. read more

The day before Valentine's Day, I woke up to a sick dog. I called my vet immediately and let them know what was going on. After my description, they knew she needed to seen pronto. Unfortunately they couldn't squeeze her in and recommended an emergency clinic. My vet is in STL and since I now live on the Eastside of the river, I choose Hawthorne. When I looked at the reviews on Yelp, I became concerned, but I needed a vet fast. I called, told them the issues and they said, to come on in. Wow, the staff was so attentive and caring to me and my fur-baby when we arrived. We were promptly escorted to an exam room and the vet tech was professional and thorough in asking questions to help us resolve the problem my dog was having. When the vet came to the exam room, she was very loving to my baby and explained what they determined the health issue to be. It was what I thought it was, she had an abscessed tooth. What impressed me was, how they coordinated care with my regular vet. I had my vet on the phone and as a team we all worked to see who could get her in for the tooth extraction the fastest. My vet could get her in the fastest. To make things easier for me and my vet, Hawthorne offered to do the prep bloodwork and send it to my vet. We both appreciated that. When I lived in STL, I had multiple emergency clinics to choose from when a need would arise. Now on the Eastside, there are not that many to choose from, but if there were, I'd still choose Hawthorne. I was impressed with the service and care I received and I am a picky dog dad. read more

This review is for emergency services & ICU care for our 12 year old husky. He received surgery here and stayed for 3 days. I was told an estimated price up front. Yes, it was an unnerving number (Especially after my vet gave me a quote that was half the price but they didn't have the time nor manpower to get it done). I understand why you are paying so much for emergency services. My dog was seen and cared for by at least 5 drs, plus all of the techs. My dog had round the clock monitoring and quick care because of the manpower provided here. My animals dr called me every morning and every evening. There were some staff that had more calming and reassuring communication styles but non the less the same information was passed by all. The waiting area was large and facility was always clean (smelled more like a sterile hospital then a place full of animals). I was always quickly greeted by someone, sometimes multiple people checked in on me. The only thing that rubbed me the wrong way was what felt like a lack of bedside manners. I refuse to complain about cost because I realize that as a pet owner, I will be paying a pretty penny for vet visits. But I believe it's worth it to get the care my dog needs. The pricing for my dog's chemo was right on point with an estimate we got across the river at another vet's office in the St. Louis (Bridgeton) area. I asked if they were going to see us and the assistant finally came in and said we had to wait longer because there was an emergency. Seems convenient that the emergency happened after I complained about the hour long wait. I've had two emergencies with my two cats. The first time, I brought my older cat in for emergency care. He didn't make it, but the staff did all they could and took care of him right away. They were very kind. They let me see him one last time and went over my options for cremation. The second visit with my other cat went much better. He was assessed quickly. They were up front with their prices (very high for emergency care). They took good care of my boy. They kept me informed twice a day while he was in the hospital. I read some of the other comments about this place "being expensive". I wonder what they are comparing? We have never been there at a regular hour. So yes, there are staffing costs. I understand the emergency room initial cost. Again, overhead. This week, one of our littles had an eyeball issue. The overnight surgical staff took care of her and a few hours later I received a call from the surgeon at 4 am giving me an update that everything was fine. Expensive? Wish I could give zero stars. Multiple bad experiences that threatened the lives of my dogs. 1) A misdiagnosis of cancer when it was an easily cured infection. They wanted to do surgery, but thankfully I went for a second opinion. 2) Letting a dog suffer with a reaction to sedation for over an hour during euthanasia. And I mean this dog was whining, trying to get up, drooling and eyes wild. I was yelling for help and having to call the front desk and no one came to help. 3) Turning a suffering dog away at 1 am because they are short staffed. These are just the top 3 bad experiences. If I could give ten stars I would! My fiancé and I brought our kitty Hank in recently for an emergency surgery and they worked with us to help find a price plan that wasn't totally out of our range. They did an excellent job with him and the whole time Amanda reassured us that Hank would be just fine. She really made the night so much easier for us. They gave us several different kinds of special diet food to try for Hank's health issues so he could pick the one he liked, and even sent us a follow-up text to check on him a few days later. A little concerned from the start...... I called for an emergency visit at 9pm on a Sunday for some front leg pain. When my husband and I arrive with our dog we were immediately put back into a room but also were told that they are very short staffed so it might be a few before we would see anyone. We waited not ONE but TWO almost THREE hours later. When they came in to see our dog the technician (nurse) didn't say shit..... they should took our dog to the back. Didn't once make eye contact to me or my husband. Personal opinion! They should have never taken my dog back without explaining to us what they are planning on doing back there. I didn't wanna be billed for something that wasn't necessary. They had our dog back there for at least 10-15 minutes. When the doctor (which very nice) came back he didn't come back with our dog he kept back there until we agreed to a next level of care. We waited another 30 minutes for some X-rays which were almost $400 alone... to only find out there is really nothing wrong with our dog so they brought him back to our room. So after a totally of THREE hours waiting and an additional 30 minutes of examining and x rays our grand total for this visit was $863........ Again we got in at 9pm and didn't get home until 1am and we both had work the next day which had us waking up at 5am. If I had to recommend a place for emergency pet visit I wouldn't recommend here... staff was very polite and friendly but they were extremely slow when there was literally only one other person in that whole clinic with us. read more

Once, Dr. Myer skillfully diagnosed an unusual problem, MRI'ed a mass, then surgically removed a bladder stone the size of a flattened golf ball. Lab testing revealed the stone began with ingestion of an oyster virus... even doggies need to watch out for bad seafood. Now, Onyx H. is crossing into early old age, developing arthritis in the hips. She's finishing a course of meds for a moderate infection, and getting ready for some minor surgery and dental care. If you're evaluating vets for your pets, then I believe you'll find Hawthorne is a bit more expensive than competitors. But the care and facilities are first-rate. read more

I was extremely upset to see my dog Igor upon picking him up after 5 days of boarding at Hawthorne. When I reached for him in his cage, he kept flinching. His eyes were blinking like he hadn't seen daylight for hours. This was at 1pm. He inhaled treats like he hadn't eaten for hours. When I got him home, he smelled of urine. He was pawing at his face and pulling pieces of fur off his front legs and paws. This is a normally well adjusted, happy little dog. I have never seen him in this condition. I will never take him to Hawthorne Boarding again. In addition to this, I was charged twice for a fecal exam. Once when they gave me the cup and again a few weeks later when I returned it. They could find no record of the first payment. I find that very troubling. I had to produce the documentation to prove to them that I paid twice. read more

The treatment by staff is terrible. We've been patients there for a little over 3 years now and I can't believe how we have been treated. Our dog has chronic ongoing allergies. He is a pitmix and the breed is prone to them. He takes Benadryl daily per the doctor's recommendation. He was also on rounds of Rx medications and we were told we could call them in when needed and have done so successfully. Our dog is up to date on all shots and was just seen 3 months ago for his annual check up. Fast forward to tonight, I've noticed his allergies are flaring up and the benadryl is not cutting it and he needs his Rx. I was told on the phone tonight (Tuesday) that we couldn't get a call back until at least Thursday. regarding if a Rx could or could not be filled. I then ask if it's possible to get a call sooner than 2 days later and if a doctor would be out if another doctor could review his charts. This comment put the worker over the edge. She was rude, responded with an attitude followed by the snarky reply that I could bring him in tomorrow to be seen by a vet if I want a quicker response. A trip to the vet means a day off work (which I can't do) and exhorbitant cost (pay $60 to be seen and then cost of Rx) as its an ongoing chronic thing and I was told I could have his Rx called in and have done so in the recent past! The staff member hung up on me with my first call. My second call was ignored. My third call was answered by someone else who refused to tell me the name of who I spoke with and tried to pretend she didn't know who I spoke with until she handed the phone over to her as the person was talking in the background. this extremely unprofessional and plain rude. She then told me she was able to talk to the doctor (who she originally told me had already left for the day) and that the doctor refused to call in the script because our dog wasn't seen for over 6 months. I told her that that was not the case because he was just seen for his annual appointment less than three months ago and that I called in Rx's successfully in the recent past just like this and then the women (while yelling) told me to tell her where to transfer our dogs chart. Essentially, kicking us out! So great way to treat customers. Now our dog continues to suffer and I need to find him new care which will take more time and even more money. Save yourself time and money and find another vet office that will actually value you and your pet as well as save you money because it's no secret this is the highest costing clinic in our area. The higher cost does not buy higher service. This will not be a place to establish long-term care. Reserve this place for emergency care in a life/death emergency situations only, and only then, if you can't make the drive over to the emergency clinic in Collinsville. read more

The first vet wanted to give our dog fluids slowly, and she was responding well. The weekend vet (that should tell you something) changed the plan, gave our dog too much fluids, and killed her. All this so called vet could say was, "I don't think anything I did killed her". Well, I think she was a quack. Then, they had the nerve to change us for 2 days. When it was one day and 2 hours. I was nervous taking my dog here with the current rating and multiple bad reviews but I honestly don't know why there's so many. I brought by dog in at 6 am Saturday morning after talking with 2 of the vet techs (Emily and Tiffany) on 3 separate phone calls about the issues I was having. I was able to explain my issue and they recommended I come in but informed me their doctor was in surgery. They explained the emergency fee before I even came in and then gave me a full itemized list of everything once a diagnosis was made. Everyone I came in contact with was polite, despite it being the end of an overnight shift, and took care of my girl at the soonest available opportunity. The doctor who performed surgery on my pup explained everything in full detail and answered all of my questions. I received terrible news that my dog had leukemia a day after the vet visit. I contacted the vet to see how much euthanasia cost. I was quoted a price at $200 with cremation being $256. I was under a lot of stress and couldn't remember if I needed to make an appointment to bring him to get euthanized so the next day I called back re-questioning the whole thing and I got a totally different quote now my 33 pound dog will cost $450 to get euthanized and $256 for cremation. I'll have you know I had a credit of $700 at this vet. She looked my information up and gave me this new price instead unfortunately you were quoted the wrong price. they were trying to use all my credit that I still had from overpaying for my dog. This place disgusted me and it makes me think. Does my dog really have leukemia or did they diagnosed him with that? The blood was inconclusive and they needed it a second time. this place is overpriced and they do not care. I feel as if this lady wants to pocket that extra $250. The people that work there are nice enough, but the place is an absolute nightmare. I took my dog there after a surgery for an overnight stay. After telling my vet over the phone it would be $100 they quoted me $400-$560 once I arrived with no other choice since my dog had a catheter and an IV in. It ended up being $375, but still almost 4x the original quote (we also brought a saline bag and all her medicine). We took her back after she had an episode on a Saturday, and her vet was closed. They basically told me nothing, but that her blood test showed she was recovering, $110. They didn't send over the blood results, or the reason for her visit to her vet. Just that she came in. You would think that if they are going to corner ppl and charge them the way they do they could at least do their job. If you have any other option I would recommend avoiding this place. read more

I will never take my animals to Hawthorne again. On 8/1/21 I called because my cat had an infected leg. I don't know who picked up the phone because she didn't say her name but told me they were booked until 8/11/21. I couldn't believe she wanted me to wait 10 days on an infected leg. I even said you can't see her today and I was told they could if I wanted to pay $311 for an emergency call. I've been going to Hawthorne for years. My parents even took their animals there (47 years altogether). Until COVID there was never a problem but seems their business is going down hill. Thankfully I found someone who could get my cat in the same day. I would not recommend this place to anyone and especially if you love your pets. read more

Hawthorns just lost our business. I just talked to Taylor who claimed she was the person in charge. In the past they told me I could get an appointment during emergency hours for the price of normal business hours as long as I called and made the appointment during business hours. She said they hadn't seen this particular pet since 2020 and I was only listed as a referral and not as a client so I HAD to pay emergency prices since they had no openings until July 30. Today is July 15. Our dog needs to be seen now. I have been a customer (not a referral) since 2008. My recently deceased pet has had numerous surgeries from this place. We recently tried to board this pet (I'm trying to get an appointment for) with them and they had no openings so we went somewhere else and he got his shots updated while being boarded. They never have any openings. Their prices are outrageous compared to everyone else and now I have to deal with a smart mouth b****! I told her to take my other two pets off of their computer because I would be going somewhere else from now on. If you want to pay outrageous prices, wait weeks to months to be seen, be told you aren't listed as a customer and be have a person be a smart ass to you and not understanding why you are upset when it's so obvious then by all means go to Hawthorne Animal Hospital and while you're there ask to speak with Taylor...if that's even her real name. My dog was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago and has been a patient there several years. On Friday I called with a question for her vet. After explaining the entire story I was told she would have a Vet call me but it would probably be Saturday. I was calling before noon so I questioned the delay since I was concerned about my dog. Apparently no one was available to call me back so I accepted the answer to wait until Saturday. It's 11:07 pm on Saturday night and no one ever called back. read more
